How to clean mink, knitted and other hats at home

With the onset of cold weather, some people buy new hats, others take out old ones, and worn items are not always kept in excellent condition. It is useful to know how to wash a woolen hat and clean a mink hat at home, because the wear and appearance of hats depends on how well they are taken care of. Some of them can simply be washed in a washing machine, but with some products, for example, made of fur, this cannot be done.

How to wash a fur hat

Before putting your fur hat in the wash, carefully read the product label. Almost all manufacturers provide complete information about the acceptable cleaning method. If for some reason the label is missing, then for such cases there are general rules for washing a fur hat.

Is it possible to wash a fur hat?

During production, the animal's skin is subjected to strong stretching, and the back of the product is treated with various chemicals. It is for this reason that it is not recommended to wash fur hats completely immersed in water. In addition, any interaction with water can cause the fur to begin to fall out and the skin to crack and become tough. Therefore, answering the question: “Is it possible to wash a fur hat?”, the answer will be unequivocal - absolutely not! This applies to both natural and artificial products.

Acceptable types of washing

Of course, the best option would be to have your hat dry cleaned. There, with the help of special equipment and special means, your fur will be restored to an attractive appearance without damaging the product. If this is not possible, then you can try to clean the fur yourself, but remember that these will be exclusively dry methods that do not involve completely getting the hat wet.

Alcohol + vinegar

Add 50-75 ml of vodka or alcohol and 75 ml of vinegar to 1 liter of water. For effective washing, you can add 5-7 ml of wool detergent. Dilute all components in water and treat the entire surface with the resulting solution from the front side using a cotton swab. There is no need to rinse off the mixture. It is enough to dry the fur hat away from sunlight.

Water + ammonia + salt

For this method you will need:

  • 500 ml water;
  • 15 ml of ammonia;
  • 45 g finely ground salt.

This mixture is applied exclusively to the stains, but not to the entire surface of the fur hat. To do this, use a cotton pad or a clean piece of cotton to treat the stains and leave for 15-20 minutes, and then blot with a paper napkin. In addition, you can wipe the inside of the product with this mixture, but this must be done very carefully so as not to harm the skin.

Lemon juice + glycerin + vinegar

All components are diluted in equal proportions and applied to the fur using a spray bottle. Since this method is designed only to add shine to the fur, there is no need to get the product too wet. After spraying, the hat must be blotted with paper or a napkin.

Facilities

If you doubt the effectiveness of traditional methods, then you can use ready-made mixtures that are sold in specialized stores. As a rule, this is a spray product that is applied to a fur hat, regardless of whether it is natural or artificial. Almost all products do not contain aggressive chemicals. They are aimed not only at cleaning the fur, but also at protecting it from moisture and dust. Such products are very convenient to use and can be used regularly to keep the fur clean.

Salt and ammonia are effective means for cleaning fur.

Another option that allows you to wash a light-colored mink hat is to treat it with ammonia and regular salt.
To do this, mix a spoonful of salt with a small amount of ammonia in half a liter of water. After this, use a cotton swab to treat the fur in the direction of its pile. Next, the hat should be moistened with a sponge and then wiped with a regular cotton towel. When processing is completed, the hat must be dried. As when using other options, in this case it is necessary to dry fur products in natural conditions.

To prevent the hat from deforming and losing its appearance when drying, it should be placed on a product shaped like a glass jar.

When deciding on the option for washing a mink hat, you must remember that any contamination must be removed in a timely manner. If the stain that appears is ignored, then over time it will begin to eat into the fur, and then it will be much more difficult to do anything. When you use chemical solutions, be careful. Mink fur is very sensitive to various types of reagents. This means that any wrong decision, movement, etc. can completely ruin your headdress.

In turn, when washing dark hats, you should not use brighteners. Thus, hydrogen peroxide can give any fur light tones. However, its use for processing dark fur products is unacceptable. In addition, do not use stain removers when washing. They contain active chemical compounds that can react with fur and ruin it.

Almost all winter clothes are decorated with fur collars and trims, which also need to be cleaned periodically. How to wash a fur collar at home so as not to spoil the fur and make it perfectly clean?

Caring for fur products means regular cleaning. This method is simply ideal for cleaning natural lint. First, shake out the collar thoroughly, and then lightly beat it with a stick so that street dust comes out. After this, you can walk over the surface with a vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment at minimum power.

Most often, the problem arises of how to wash a fur collar from a down jacket, since such jackets most often have removable edges. If the fur is artificial, it can be washed in a warm soap solution by hand. If the edge is natural, then you will have to use other cleaning methods.

What to do if you can't wash it?

Traditional methods are used to clean hats made from mouton, mink, arctic fox and other types of fur that cannot be washed in water.

Before you begin deep cleaning your fur hat, you need to get rid of stubborn dirt and dust. Gently clean the hat with a soft brush, then wrap it in damp gauze and gently pat the dust out of the product.

Cleaning with alcohol and vinegar

For this cleaning method you will need 1 liter of warm water, ½ cup of vinegar, ½ cup of alcohol, 1 tablespoon of wool rinse. The procedure is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Lay the hat out on a flat surface.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a basin or bowl.
  3. Dip a brush or cloth into the resulting solution and gently iron the pile in the “along the wool” direction.
  4. Make sure that the base of the fur remains dry.

Cleaning with wheat bran

This simple method is well suited for cleaning fur army earflaps.

  1. Pour a glass of wheat bran into a glass of hot water.
  2. When the bran swells, strain it through a sieve.
  3. In small portions, the bran is rubbed into the fur headdress.
  4. After the product is distributed throughout the cap, shake it well.
  5. Brush the fur with a soft brush.
  6. Dry your military earflaps.

Removing various stains

  • Wipe sweat stains with a soft cloth soaked in a special solution.
  • To prepare it, dissolve a teaspoon of salt and ammonia in two glasses of water.
  • Wipe grease stains with a cloth soaked in gasoline. Do this in a certain direction: wipe a short-haired product against the lint, and a long-haired product - vice versa. If the stain is old, add a teaspoon of washing powder per liter of water and wipe off the stain. After this, clean with gasoline. Let the headdress dry, and finally comb it with a sparse comb.
  • Spray yellow spots on white fur with hydrogen peroxide from a spray bottle, you can add a little ammonia. Place in the sun to dry for a couple of hours.

How to clean the lining

You can clean it in one of the following ways:

  • If the dirt is barely noticeable, you can wipe the pile with a damp cloth.
  • Stubborn stains are removed with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol.

If the lining can be cleaned, the hat is turned inside out, put on the jar and dried. If these products fail to remove the stains, the lining is peeled off and washed separately. The dried lining is sewn into place.

Washing a fur hat at home is quite simple. By following the recommendations given, you can clean your headdress from dust and other contaminants without damaging the structure of its base.

How to wash a fur hat at home

Fur hats look very impressive and provide great warmth in the cold winter, but fluffy fur has a drawback. The thick pile, due to its texture, is like a brush collecting various contaminants. Dust settles between frequently located hairs. Snow, fog, wind, a humid and oversaturated atmosphere with exhaust gases - all this negatively affects the cleanliness of the fibers.

Shoes

Faux fur is found on many boots and boots. It looks very beautiful, but taking care of such shoes is not easy. There are different ways to remove dirt from boots:

  1. If the fur is light, white, you can use talc, flour, baby powder. Sprinkle the selected product onto the pile and after a while (usually a few minutes) remove it using a brush.
  2. Grease and small amounts of dirt can be cleaned with baking soda. There may be several such procedures - you need to ensure that the product stops getting dirty. The paint is removed with gasoline.
  3. If the pile is dark, it is not recommended to clean it with flour. Otherwise, the item may become damaged. Use sawdust to clean dark pile: you will need to sprinkle it on the fur.

How to wash a fur hat yourself

Before water procedures, you should evaluate the condition of the product and determine whether it is possible to do without radical methods: it is possible that simple cleaning will return the dirty fur to its previous condition. Before washing, you will still have to clean the hat mechanically - especially if the long pile is filled with stuck lumps of dust and dirt, there are mini-tangles of hairs (this occurs in long-haired hats: foxes, arctic foxes, raccoons). Recommendations on how to clean your hat:

  1. For a hat with long pile and rich down (from mink, arctic fox), you will need a hard special brush for combing out fur products. Before cleaning the fur, wrap the brush a little with cotton so as not to pull out delicate hairs.
  2. A hat with short pile (mink, astrakhan fur, mouton, muskrat) is cleaned of simple dirt using damp gauze. Cover the entire fur surface with it and pat the inside of the product - dust and dirt particles will settle on the gauze.
  3. Yellowed light fur can be lightened again using talcum powder or potato starch. Gently but thoroughly rub the powder into the hairs, shake and lightly knock out from the inside out. Brush with a brush, removing the smallest remaining powder. You can also use hydrogen peroxide: dilute it with water 2:1 and carefully treat the pile with the solution using a cotton swab. The cap will turn white again.

Important! In the case of wet processing, it is required that the moisture does not wet the hat through to the base - otherwise the headdress may be unsightly deformed.

How to wash a fur hat at home if cleaning alone is not enough:

  • For a liter of warm water - 100 ml of alcohol and vinegar and 10 ml of rinse aid for woolen items. Treat the hat with the solution, using a brush or napkin and ironing the fur from bottom to top.
  • 80 g of salt and 2 tablespoons of alcohol per 200 ml of water, stir thoroughly, dissolving the salt. Treat the fur with a cotton swab.
  • A teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia in a glass of warm water. Apply the solution to the fur with a spray bottle or swab. Allow to dry completely and comb.
  • If there are greasy and old stains, prepare a paste of potato starch and gasoline. Lubricate the stain with this porridge. Wait until dry, shake, comb out any remaining mixture.

There is no point in getting the pile in proper shape if the lining of the hat remains dirty. It should be taken into account that a stale lining also emits an unpleasant odor of greasy hair. It also needs to be put in order:

  • If the contamination is minor, treat the lining with a warm soapy solution using a sponge or an alcohol solution using a cotton pad. To do this cleaning, turn the cap inside out, carefully place it on the jar and leave it to dry.
  • It is better to tear off a heavily soiled lining and wash it separately, and after drying, sew it back.

Important! Many would prefer not to act on their own, but to entrust their headwear to a dry cleaner. Please note: you should dry clean your hat only if it is very dirty. After 5-6 visits to this institution, the item will lose its appearance.

Major cleaning

  1. Gently peel back the lining. To sew it back correctly, mark with colored thread the places where it was sewn. Wash the lining separately in soapy water, rinse and iron. If it is completely worn out, it is better to sew a new one and make a pattern using the old lining.
  2. Turn the fur inside out and carefully inspect the underside. If there are cracks or holes on it, carefully mend them with a thin needle and thread. Cover these areas with adhesive tape. These patches will last for several more seasons!
  3. Finally it was time to clean the fur. Place the product on a three-liter jar with the fur side up. Dilute starch with gasoline to make a paste. Lightly rub this mixture into the fur. Gasoline evaporates very quickly, so it is better to make several small portions of the gruel. After you have treated the entire surface, wait 10-15 minutes. Clean off any remaining residue with a brush. Repeat the procedure until pure starch comes out of the product.
  4. At the end of cleaning, carefully shake off the remaining sorbent from the hat and hang it in the fresh air in the shade. Comb the dried headdress with a brush and sew on the lining.

If the shine has disappeared, wipe the fur with a cloth soaked in glycerin or vinegar.

How to wash fur hats with shampoo

To wash a fur hat, dilute shampoo in a basin and whip up the foam in the shower. Apply foam to the pile with a sponge without rubbing. Remove any remaining foam by thoroughly rinsing it in clean water and wrung out the sponge. Whether a mink hat with a knitted base can be washed with shampoo is indicated on the tag of these hats. Such exposure is quite acceptable if carried out occasionally and in water with a temperature not exceeding 30 ° C, using shampoo and conditioner. You cannot rub a wet hat harshly; you need to treat it like your own hair when washing your hair. Rinse with wool conditioner, do not wring, let the water drain on its own.

Important! After washing, you cannot dry fur hats using a hairdryer or heating devices, this will ruin the quality of the fur - it may become fragile and lose its natural shine. It is also highly undesirable to iron the pile and lining - the fur will become wrinkled and will not straighten out. The hat will dry perfectly naturally. To avoid deformation, it should be dried in a cool place, placed on the bottom of an empty glass jar (usually a three-liter jar).

To avoid household pollution, you need to put the hat away for the warm season - it is best to put it on a jar and put it in a closet. The storage place must be absolutely dry and dark (natural furs tend to fade). It is necessary to ensure that the pile is not crushed during storage and that sufficient ventilation is provided: the fur wants to “breathe”. It is necessary to protect the product from moths.
