Headphone jack

Today it is difficult to imagine a person without headphones. The modern world is filled with loud sounds. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get lost in your thoughts and be alone with yourself if you don’t have headphones at hand.

Using such a gadget requires maintenance. Otherwise, you may break the headphone jack in your mobile device. It may also simply become clogged.

Perhaps you have often encountered a similar problem? This article will help you solve it.

Ways to clean the headphone jack on your phone

There are two ways to clean the headphone jack and repair it.

First option

Before you begin cleaning, you will need to prepare your materials and tools. These include:

  • toothpick or sharp small piece of wood;
  • cotton wool;
  • alcohol in small quantities.

The procedure contains several steps. The device owner needs:

  1. Soak a piece of cotton wool in an alcohol solution and attach it to a toothpick.

  2. Insert the structure into the connector.
  3. Make a few rotational movements and pull out the toothpick. Change the fleece.
  4. Repeat step two until completely clean. It is important to change the toothpick and cotton wool. The action should be stopped when the material remains white after the next repetition.

If desired, you can use a toothpick without cotton wool. A small sharp stick perfectly removes small dirt in the form of fibers or lint. Typically, such debris gets there when the phone is in your pocket.

Second option

This method is called budgetary. To carry out the cleaning procedure, you will need a cotton pad. You will need:

  1. Divide the disk into several parts.
  2. Moisten one piece in an alcohol solution and wrap the headphone plug with cotton wool.
  3. Insert the plug inside and clean it in a circular motion until the cotton wool turns white. It is logical that it will need to be changed several times.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated. Now it’s clear how you can clean the nest of dirt without turning to specialists.

Instructions

The presence of wax in the mesh can affect the appearance of the headphones and even the sound quality. To clean, use a cotton swab soaked in hydrogen peroxide. You can also use a soft toothbrush and toothpicks.

To clean your headphones, you need to:

Make sure the device is disconnected from the phone. Clean the microphone hole and speaker grill with a dry cotton swab or cotton pad. For best results, the speaker grille can also be cleaned with a dry toothbrush or brush.

Please note that the toothbrush must be soft.

Dirt that accumulates on the edges of plastic seams and grilles can be cleaned with toothpicks. For minor contamination this may be sufficient. If the speaker grill is very dirty, then we move on to the next step.

To clean the device from serious external contaminants, the following is usually used:

  • hydrogen peroxide,
  • formic alcohol,
  • chlorhexidine,
  • detergent.

Hydrogen peroxide works well to remove all contaminants that have become ingrained into the body. Formic alcohol can also be used externally, but it is more aggressive than peroxide. Chlorhexidine has an antimicrobial effect, perfectly fights germs and removes dirt.

Using hydrogen peroxide, alcohol and washing powder

Once you have decided on the choice of liquid to clean your device, you can proceed directly to the process itself.

The cleaning process requires maximum precision of movements. Apple Earpods do not come with detachable accessories. The speaker has a very small output hole. It is covered with a tiny mesh, firmly mounted in a plastic casing.

Recommendations for carrying out such work at home are as follows:

  1. The cotton swabs used should not be wet. A large amount of liquid, if ingested, can cause structural destruction.
  2. Each earphone should be wiped with the grille facing down. Likewise, the likelihood of moisture getting inside the structure is reduced.

It is worth considering that the device cannot be disassembled; the headphones are not repairable. Therefore, it is impossible to clean the inside of Airpods. This is due to the fact that the individual parts are attached using special glue.

How to fix a 3.5mm jack

Headphones are a popular type of gadget. They are necessary for players, mobile phones, tablets and even computers. Long-term use leads to breakage of the socket.

  • We connect any headset to the phone if it is not visible through the device’s Bluetooth. How? I'm telling you

Of course, to repair the connector, you can contact a specialized workshop, where professionals will take care of the problem. However, if necessary, you can repair the hole yourself. The procedure is simple and does not require much time.

Preparatory work

First you need to inspect the electronic device to which the headphones are connected. Perhaps the reason for the lack of sound is its pollution. Then you can use one of the methods discussed earlier, using a cotton pad or toothpick.

If this doesn't help, it's worth checking if the device works with other headphones. It is possible that the reason lies precisely in the model of the gadget being used, and it will have to be replaced. If there is no sound in other headphones, then you can start repairing your mobile device.

Main process

To repair the socket of a mobile phone, tablet or other gadget, you will need:

  1. Disassemble the device. To do this, you need to unfasten the case and unscrew all the fasteners.
  2. Inspect the nest. It is also recommended to check how securely the electrical contacts are fastened. If a broken connection is detected, you can restore it using a soldering iron.
  3. If the socket is working, conclude that the problem is in the plug and begin repairing it. The design of the element may be different, but its design is always the same. It is necessary to disassemble the connector and inspect the site. The surface must be cleaned and tinned using a soldering iron.
  4. Strip the wires. It is recommended to shorten the wire formed by the screen cores, otherwise a short circuit will occur.
  5. Solder the main wire to the connector.
  6. Insert the cable back into the mount.
  7. Check the functionality of the plug by inserting it inside. To do this, you also need to connect headphones to the player.

If everything was done correctly, then sound will appear in them.

Tips from experienced users

Tips from experienced users who do not regularly clean or repair the connector themselves include the following:

  1. Under no circumstances should you use water to clean the connector. This will not only void the device's warranty, but will also significantly damage the gadget itself. It is better to give preference to technical alcohol.
  2. If you experience problems with sound while listening to music or audio messages, the reason may not always lie in a broken or clogged socket. Sometimes the problem is found in the headphones themselves. This point is also worth taking into account.

If you can remove the blockage in the connector with your own hands, it is still not recommended to repair it yourself. It is better to seek help from the nearest service center, where specialists will conduct a full diagnosis of the device and help solve the problem.

Devices capable of playing media files, streaming music, making calls, etc. are equipped with a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset or headphones. Smartphones or tablets are no exception. Rare models of modern devices do not have a jack 3.5 connection.

Over time, you may experience difficulties using headphones on your device.

  • How to clean the iPhone 4 charging socket

Problems

The smartphone does not recognize the connected headset/headphones:

  • The problem may occur due to an installed application. The store offers a lot of programs for playing music and watching videos. Not all applications are compatible with a specific software model; some have errors in the code or contain malicious files. In this case, uninstalling the application and cleaning it with an antivirus may help. If the problem is not resolved after eliminating the program, you should reset application settings or return the device to factory settings.
  • Connector clogged. The socket contains a number of contacts that provide signal transmission. During operation of the device, moisture and dirt may penetrate inside and interfere with conductivity. The connector should be cleaned of any debris that has penetrated.
  • Headset failure. To check, you need to connect the headphones to another device that has a 3.5 mm jack. If sound does not come through the speakers, you should replace the headphones.
  • Connector failure. When the plug is inserted into the socket, the contacts open and the external speaker stops receiving a sound signal. Excessive physical impact may damage the condition of sensitive elements. In this case, only replacement will help.
  • Contact mismatch. Some smartphone manufacturers reverse the poles, which means that only original original headphones can be connected to the device.

When you disconnect the headset, the device remains in connection mode:

  • Clogging. Large amounts of debris can cause compaction inside and interfere with the normal operation of the device.
  • Connector failure. As mentioned above, the case contains special contacts that can be damaged. Only installing a new socket can solve the problem.

The sound does not pass through or passes through very weakly:

  • This problem occurs when using a headset designed for a specific device model or unknown manufacturer. The sensitivity of the connector may be less than necessary due to differences in the diameter or length of the plug. Here you should replace the headset.

Cleaning the headphone jack

There are several methods you can use to remove debris from the headphone jack:

  • Cotton wool soaked in alcohol. A small piece of cotton wool should be wrapped around a toothpick and moistened with cologne or a similar liquid containing alcohol. Insert it inside the connector and make several rotational movements. Repeat the procedure until the removed cotton wool is completely clean.
  • Cotton pad. The plate should be divided lengthwise into several layers so that a very thin element remains, which must be moistened with an alcohol-containing substance. After this, a layer of cotton wool is wound around the headphone plug and inserted into the connector. This procedure allows for maximum adherence to the contacts.
  • Toothpick. The sharp end of a wooden stick can be used to remove lint, hair and other objects from the connector. You should operate with minimal force so as not to damage the elements located inside.
  • Purge. You can blow air into the nest from a can or blow. This allows you to remove small debris. The danger is that dust can get deep into the connector.

Ear sticks

For some reason, many sites on the Internet write that sulfur and other relatively large debris from hard-to-reach areas of the headphones should be removed using toothpicks. I think this is complete nonsense. Using a toothpick can damage the membrane and other parts of the headphones, so I recommend either being as careful as possible when doing this, or giving preference to ear sticks.

Ear sticks are even quite suitable for removing wax from the inside of EarPods or AirPods where the protective mesh is located. And their soft “tips” will help avoid damage.

Ear sticks are suitable for any hard-to-reach and internal parts of earbuds, in-ear and on-ear headphones. If the dirt is old and dried, you need to moisten them in one of the solutions that I will talk about later.

Connector repair

You can only replace the connector yourself if you have the appropriate equipment and parts:

  • Soldering iron.
  • Tin.
  • Rosin.
  • Connector

Access to the insides of the smartphone is also required. If it is not possible to disassemble the housing, then you need to contact a specialist.

The first step will be to solder the old nest. The soldering iron tip should be thin enough so as not to touch other contacts. To solve this problem, you can use a piece of copper wire wound around the tip.

Using a heated soldering iron, melt the tin on the contacts of the old socket and remove it.

New contacts should be treated with acid/rosin. Place in place and tin solder to the board.

  • Music via bluetooth in an android car

It is important that the metal does not short-circuit the contacts! All cleaning or repair work on the device should be carried out with the device turned off.

If the headphone jack does not work, you can use a wireless Bluetooth headset. Alternatively, you can use the OTG function . You need to connect a cable into the socket of which you can connect a regular USB sound adapter (sound card).

This simple method will allow you to use headphones to listen to music in high quality.

Phone repair – iPhone repair –

Cleaning the connectors of a mobile device is one of the simplest, yet most effective procedures for “repairing” an iPhone yourself. It will most likely be effective if your headphones are glitchy, noisy, or periodically turn off, or your charging adapter is malfunctioning.

Free diagnostics. Guarantee. Low prices.+7, St. Petersburg, st. Efimova, 1/4 (“Sennaya Square”) iPhone repair | iPad Repair Attention! We are not responsible for your actions.

There are several ways to overcome these difficulties. For the first, we will need small sharp objects like matches or toothpicks, cotton wool and alcohol. Wrap a small amount of cotton wool slightly moistened with alcohol around the match and gently wipe the plug. Repeat the procedure until the cotton wool removed from the connector is perfectly white.

The second method also involves the use of cotton wool, but in the form of disks. Divide one of them in half to reduce the thickness of the layer as much as possible. Slightly soak the former outer side with alcohol. Now pack the dirty headphones or power adapter in this soaked cotton wool so that the wet side is on the outside. Place the resulting structure in the plug.

If necessary, repeat the operation two or three times to clean the contacts completely.

Make sure the headphones are working.

The first step when discovering a broken headphone jack is obvious. It's entirely possible that there's actually nothing wrong with the headphone jack and the problem is with the headphones. You can verify their functionality by simply connecting them to another device. It doesn't have to be a smartphone. A laptop, TV or any other device with a built-in 3.5 mm jack will do.

Take note : what to do if your mobile phone falls into water

If you don't hear sound when you connect your headphones to other devices, you've found a problem. Just replace the headphones and you're done. If they work fine with another device, something else is to blame. It's time to move on to the next step below.

We also recommend connecting other headphones to your smartphone before moving on. Although this is rare, there is still a chance that the headphones are not compatible with your smartphone, even if they work with other devices.

↑ Washing the cover

The case is as integral a part of the design of smartphones as the back cover.
However, covers also get dirty, and buying new ones every time is simply uneconomical. It is worth noting that on the modern market you can find covers made from a variety of materials. Methods that apply to some coatings may not be suitable for others. Let's go over popular materials and give examples of cleaning products. Rubber (silicone)

Silicone cases are most widespread and are often supplied with the device. This is justified by the low cost of production, their practicality and replaceability. They also do not add many centimeters to the thickness of the device, which allows it to remain sufficiently mobile.

For contaminated rubber, a regular soap solution is suitable. To make it, add a little soap to warm water, then immerse the product itself in it. If there are hard pieces of dirt stuck to the surface of the cover, rub it with a washcloth or wet rag.

If your case was originally snow-white, but over time it acquired a yellowish or rusty tint, spread toothpaste on it. Leave it in this state for half an hour and wash it in warm water.

Leather or its substitute

Leather products are a little more difficult to care for. You can still use soapy water, but we advise you not to leave the case in there for long. If the skin is white, a mixture of milk and egg white will help wash away dark spots and streaks. But after such cleaning, the accessory will have to be kept in water for some time to get rid of the corresponding smell.

Suede

Suede covers are rapidly going out of fashion, inferior in all respects to cheap rubber. However, if necessary, you can rub the contaminated areas of the product with a regular eraser. The main thing is not to forget to shake off small crumbs from the surface afterwards.

Check if your smartphone is connected to another device via Bluetooth.

If your smartphone is paired with wireless headphones, a speaker, or another device via Bluetooth, the headphone jack may be disabled. Typically, when you plug in your headphones, your smartphone should recognize them and everything should work as intended, regardless of your Bluetooth settings. However, this is not always the case.

This is a quick and easy solution as all you have to do is open the settings menu on your device, find the Bluetooth option and check if it is turned on. In this case, the smartphone is most likely connected to one of the other devices you have at home. If this is the problem, just turn it off, plug in your headphones and see if that solves the problem. If they still don't work, you should move on to the next step in this list.

Clean the headphone jack.

As you can imagine, over time, a lot of dust and lint can get into the headphone jack. This can cause damage as dirt can actually block the connection between the headphones and the jack.

The first thing to do if the headphone jack is not working is to simply look into the jack to assess the situation. You may need a flashlight for this. The next step is to try to clean it and hope that solves the problem. There are many different ways to do this, some of them work better than others. One option is to simply blow into the headphone jack to remove at least some of the dust and lint found inside. You can also use a can of compressed air if you have one.

A good option is to use a Q-tip. Insert it into the connector and twist it a little to remove dust and lint. Be very careful when doing this as there is a risk of damaging the device further. You can also soak a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol, but be careful not to use too much.

Once you're done, look in the headphone jack again to see how much dust and lint is still left. If everything is clear, plug in your headphones to check if everything is working as it should.

Check your sound settings and restart your smartphone.

There's also a chance that the problem is not with the jack or headphones you're using, but with the device's audio settings. If this is the case, you will be able to figure it out in no time. Simply open the sound settings on your device and check the volume level as well as other settings that may be muting the sound.

Typically, there are not many such settings on a smartphone, so you should quickly find the problem. If there is one.

If everything seems fine but the headphone jack is not working, you can try another simple solution - restarting your device. Rebooting usually resolves many different issues related to your smartphone, and it takes less than a minute. Simply press and hold the Power button, select the restart option, wait for the device to turn on again, and then check if the problem is gone.

    Chlorhexidine

Chlorhexidine is my latest find, recently recommended to me by friends who sell hearing aids.

They recommend that their clients regularly wipe these devices with it. There are no components in it that can damage the headphones, but the antimicrobial effects are simply excellent: it will kill staphylococci, streptococci and other rubbish.

Along with it, I use ear sticks and cotton pads. The first are for internal use, and the second are for external use. Everything is fine and I’m not afraid to give headphones to friends who have their own illnesses. It’s generally cool to always have such a thing with you - for example, in a car first aid kit.

Guys, I’ve been using almost all of this for a long time and about liquids I tried to communicate with specialists who are in the know. But you still do all this at your own peril and risk, keep this in mind. However, it's better to try cleaning very dirty headphones than to throw them away altogether. What do you use?

It has long been known that headphones are one of the best carriers of health-threatening diseases. They harbor ear fungus, as well as staphylococci, streptococci and influenza. Headphones live in unknown pockets, so they quickly lose their appearance. The same EarPods turn first into gray and then into yellow. But I have a solution. For myself, I already...

It's time to go to a repairman.

If none of the tips listed above help, this means that the problem is not as small as we would like. If your smartphone is still under warranty, your best bet is to simply contact the seller or manufacturer. Explain the problem to the company and send it in for repair or replacement. In some cases it may take a long time, but at least it's free.

The second solution is definitely the worst. You may need to have the device repaired by the manufacturer or someone else who knows and understands this. You'll have to open your wallet and pay to get it fixed, but at least you'll be able to use the headphone jack again. Otherwise, you can simply opt for a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones, which will also solve the problem. Well, sort of.

These are some of the fixes that we hope will help you fix a faulty headphone jack on your smartphone. If you think we missed something, let us know in the comments. Also feel free to share which of the above solutions - if any - worked for you.

A significant part of our contemporaries prefer to listen to their favorite music or audiobook without interrupting their daily activities. It is not surprising that every second person wears headphones on the street or on public transport. Some people buy very expensive devices, others use those that came with a smartphone or player. No matter what the headphones are, even the most sophisticated ones, there comes a time when the sound becomes noticeably worse and quieter, or even disappears completely. But don’t despair and immediately run to a service center or store for a new headset. Most likely, it was simply dirty. If you know how to properly clean your headphones from wax and the connector for them from dirt and dust using improvised means, and also do this regularly, then your headset will last for a very, very long time.

    Content:

    Putting everything in place

Luckily, this is much easier than taking the headphones apart. After cleaning, carefully install the mesh back. As a rule, it stays there securely, but if you pick it too much, you can apply a “nano-drop” of glue. And, of course, you need to check the sound volume before you start assembling.

Now you know exactly how to clean your headphones from earwax and restore their volume. But the reason for the loss of volume is not always a dirty mesh. Here are a few more possible options - check if all our “hygiene procedures” still do not help. So why can music sound quiet on headphones?

The track was recorded at a low sound level. For example, if you downloaded a track (especially from pirated resources), it may turn out that the low volume was built into it during recording. Experiment with other songs or turn on online radio to test.

Media volume set to low. In modern smartphones, the volume level for music, calls and notifications is adjusted separately. Perhaps, while adjusting the sound, you simply moved the media slider to the minimum position.

As a last resort, if you still can’t solve the problem, you can try increasing the volume programmatically. Here again, two options can be considered.

Through the engineering menu. We do not encourage such methods, just like manufacturers - otherwise they would not hide the options in a special section. But if you are ready to take a risk or you simply have nothing better to do, you can find instructions on the Internet.

Installation of special applications. You can find quite a few of these in the official store - for example, GOODEV

Please note that usually the creators of such applications honestly warn users that they use the software at their own peril and risk. The description of the same GOODEV states that playing loud sounds for a long time can lead to destruction of speakers and/or damage to hearing

    So don't overdo it!

Why do headphones need to be cleaned?

Regular cleaning of your headphones is the key to their long service life and high-quality sound. In addition, it is hygienic and will have a positive effect on the health of the auricle, because a dirty headset is an excellent environment for various germs and bacteria.

Even the cleanest people have wax buildup in their ears. This is a normal biological defense process. By the way, with regular use of headphones, the release of sulfur occurs more intensely. Naturally, over time it gets clogged up in the headset’s mesh. And in a pocket or bag, particles of dust, lint and other contaminants stick to it. As a result, sound deterioration occurs.

When a smartphone, player or tablet is constantly carried in a bag or pocket, the headset jack also becomes clogged with debris and dust. And this can also affect the sound, not only the quality, but its overall presence. Therefore, the contacts in the gadget also need to be cleaned.

How to clean the headset meshes and headphone jack? It's not difficult at all. For this process you will need the most common things that everyone can find at home:

    • alcohol or hydrogen peroxide;
    • cotton buds;
    • toothpicks;
    • cotton pads;
    • dry wipes;
    • a small shallow container (for example, a plastic bottle cap).

There are two types of headphones: vacuum and drops. The procedure for cleaning your headphones will vary depending on the type of device.

    Cleaning in-ear headphones

Before cleaning vacuum headphones from wax, you need to remove the rubber pads from them.
They are washed separately. You can do this with a soap solution, or you can wipe it with a cotton pad soaked in peroxide. The next step is to clean the mesh itself. If it can be removed, this is an ideal option to protect the speaker one hundred percent. But most models do not have this option. So, if the mesh is removed, they are carefully pryed off with a needle and placed in a small container filled with alcohol or peroxide.

Important! To treat the meshes with alcohol, 5–10 minutes are enough, and with peroxide – 15–20 minutes.

If the screens cannot be removed, you need to pour alcohol/peroxide into the same bottle cap to a level of approximately 2-3 millimeters. Then dip the bottom of the headphones into the liquid so that only the mesh is in contact with it. The headset must be secured in this position using clothespins or tape and left for the time specified above. After the expiration date, take out the headphones, wipe them with a dry cloth, removing any remaining dirt and liquid, and leave them to dry with the mesh down on a dry cloth for about 2 hours. Then the dried silicone attachments are also returned to their place. Now the device can be used.

Removing sulfur and dirt from a plastic headset

Cleaning drop headphones is as easy as cleaning vacuum headphones. Often they cannot be taken apart at all, so craftsmen have come up with several ways to clean them effectively and without harm.

The first method is practically no different from similar cleaning of a vacuum headset. Except that there are no rubber pads that need to be removed and washed separately. In this case, the earphone is immersed in peroxide or alcohol with the mesh down and soaked for the prescribed time. Then it is wiped and dried.

We advise you to find out how to make an air freshener for your apartment.
Read: what you can do to make your jeans fit.

The second method is suitable for such “droplets”, the mesh of which is partially covered with plastic, or, for example, for EarPods from Apple. For this type of headset, “dipping” in alcohol is not suitable. We'll have to do more "jewelry" work. First, use a toothpick to clean all the grooves and corners around the mesh from sulfur and dirt. Then wipe the mesh and all the recesses with a cotton swab soaked in peroxide/alcohol and pre-wrung out. Finally, with a cotton pad, also moistened and wrung out, the entire head of the earphone is thoroughly wiped.

There is another way. Some consider it the most optimal, while others, on the contrary, consider it too risky. Nevertheless, he has the right to life. You can clean the mesh in your headphones using an old toothbrush. It must be dry. This must be done carefully, using the bristles to break through the membrane to remove sulfur.

Selecting the diameter of the ear pads and the shape of the in-ear headphones for comfortable wearing

In-ear headphones are designed specifically to seal the ear canal with a soft cushion that is gentle on the skin with its smooth surface and expands the passage to secure the speaker housing.

The latter is located at the back of the barrel and transmits sound through a short tube

In order to wear in-ear headphones correctly, it is important to correctly select the diameter of the ear pads and their material, which must correspond to the anatomical features of a particular person.

    9 Best In-Ear Headphones

There are three types of headphone tips by number:

1 - has an edge with a diameter of 5 mm and a thickening of up to 7 mm, designed for children, girls or short people (although there are individual characteristics of the ear canal that do not fall under these statistics).

2 - have 5 mm on the outside and an extension of up to 9 mm, which is suitable for people of average height and tall.

3 - equipped with an inlet of 5 mm and an expander of up to 11 mm, which is rarely used in the case of a large diameter of the ear canal.

Selecting a headset with ear pads of a suitable diameter that matches the user’s parameters will ensure proper wearing and a minimum of discomfort

When choosing ear pads, you should pay attention to the material from which they are made.

The softer it is, the more pleasant it will be on the skin, and the easier it will be to insert and remove the device. The most optimal are silicone headphones. After them, in second place, are rubber liners, and only then PVC.

It is important to remember that the thickness of the ear pads also affects the wearing of in-ear headphones. The thinner the material, the easier it is to insert the barrel into the ear, but the insulating effect will be less and vice versa

If all the tried options do not bring satisfactory results, then you can try ordering the production of in-ear headphones according to individual parameters, but this is only available in large cities and will cost more.

The shape of the headphones can be straight or curved. The former tire the ears faster and outwardly they look less organic, due to the oblique entrance to the auditory canal. Optimal for proper wearing are curved earbuds, in which the housing with the speaker has a slight turn on the tube with attached ear pads.

    How to clean a wire

When the headset is black, people usually don’t pay attention to the condition of the wires and forget about them. But owners of light-colored models endlessly wonder: how to clean white headphones? After all, against a light background, traces of dirty fingers, greasy stains, dried pieces of food, etc. are always visible. In fact, there is nothing complicated here either. All insulated wires and headset heads are wiped with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol, peroxide or glass washing liquid. By the way, black headphones need to clean the wires just as much as white ones, despite the fact that nothing is usually visible on them.

    Cotton pads

Cotton pads are useful for removing dirt from the outer parts of any headphones or wiping them dry after using liquid products from the pharmacy.

Cotton pads are great for cleaning headphone wires. For example, if your EarPods are not yet yellow, but are already gray, you can simply wet a cotton pad with water, squeeze it out as much as possible, and wipe all their outer parts. This can help.

Cotton pads are also good for cleaning the ear pads of large over-ear headphones. Depending on the type of contamination, you can do this either simply slightly damp or soaked in one of the pharmaceutical liquids.

After any, let’s say, wet procedure with cotton pads, it is important to wipe the headphones dry.

A proven method for cleaning the headphone jack

Even if the smartphone is in a case, the headset jack is not protected in any way and also gets dirty. Therefore, after cleaning the mesh, it is also worth paying attention to.

Important! Before cleaning the headphone jack, the device must be turned off. Otherwise, cleaning risks possible damage not only to the socket itself, but also to the device as a whole.

For the procedure you will need:

    • toothpick;
    • a piece of cotton wool;
    • alcohol.

The cotton wool should be carefully wrapped around a toothpick and then dipped in alcohol. Be sure to squeeze out excess liquid before inserting into the socket. In the connector itself, this homemade cotton swab makes rotational movements, wiping the contacts from dust. If the cotton wool quickly becomes dirty, you should replace it and repeat all the manipulations performed. By the way, cleaning the headphone jack on your phone with an industrial cotton swab is not a good idea. Its width matches the size of the entrance, so it can push dirt even deeper. But with such a stick you can wipe the contacts dry after the cleaning procedure.

    Alternative options

There are several other ways to clean your headphone jack. For one of them, you will need to cut the cotton pad lengthwise into two halves. The thinner part is moistened with alcohol, squeezed out and wrapped around the headset plug. Then it is inserted into the connector (not all the way) and turned several times. If the cotton pad becomes dirty too quickly, it should be replaced with a clean one and the procedure repeated.

Advice! If a lump of thread, lint, dust, or other large particle gets into the headset jack, you can remove it using thin tweezers.

You can also clean the headphone jack on your phone using strong air pressure. For this, a special technical vacuum cleaner is used, but it can be replaced with a compressed air cylinder or even a regular enema. He recommends blowing it dry, but some people recommend dropping alcohol into the connector first. One drop will be enough. After any of the procedures, the device must be left alone for several hours so that excess moisture, if any remains, dries.

To summarize, it is worth noting that such procedures are very simple. They require a minimum of cost and effort, and bring many benefits both for technical devices (headsets and smartphones) and for human health. In the end, even if nothing works out, it won’t get any worse. If the sound becomes weak, then either take the risk and wash the headphones, or buy new ones.
