With regular use of headphones, dirt accumulates on the surface of the headset and the case, which affects the appearance and sound of the device. How to clean Airpods at home correctly so as not to break them is a problem for many users.
In this article, we will study in detail the issue of cleaning headphones from an iPhone, consider various ways to get rid of dirt, and learn tips for caring for headphones.
Cleaning methods
1. Inserts.
In this type of headphones, the mesh is covered with a plastic cover. If the model is collapsible, you can remove the cover by turning it counterclockwise.
You can take a small container and pour 1-2 tbsp into it. l. alcohol and immerse the mesh surface in it, letting it soak for a couple of minutes. Use a cotton swab to remove any remaining dirt.
If the mesh is not removed, most of the frozen sulfur can be removed with a toothpick. Then you need to soak a cotton pad in alcohol and wipe the surface so that the liquid does not get inside the bowl. After the procedure, a paper towel or napkin is taken out and the inserts are placed on it to dry.
It is very important to prevent the wires from getting wet, otherwise the equipment will break.
2. Vacuum headphones.
First you need to remove the silicone nozzles and determine how large the contamination is. If the mesh is not too clogged with dust and earwax, you can simply wipe all surfaces with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or glass cleaner. If more thorough cleaning is required, it is recommended to perform the following steps:
- Pour 3% hydrogen peroxide into a small cap (such as a plastic bottle or toothpaste) so that the liquid barely covers the bottom.
- Lightly dip the earphone mesh into the container, then pull it out. Repeat several times until the dirt reacts with the peroxide - the liquid hisses or simply visually begins to corrode the dirt.
- Leave the equipment to dry for 2-3 hours on a napkin or paper towel.
There are models of vacuum headphones with a removable mesh. In this case, you need to remove it with tweezers or a needle, put it in an alcohol solution and leave for a few minutes, then pull it out and dry it.
If water gets into the connector
As worldly wisdom says, after a falling earphone, the phone itself flies into the water. If you pull it out in time, nothing will happen to it, but there will already be water inside the connector. We are taking rescue measures:
- If the headphones fall into the water along with the main device, then immediately pull it out of the water and remove the battery, and turn off the headphones themselves.
- We brush away large drops of water. We wipe off the rest.
- We dry the device for at least three days, without turning it on or inserting the battery. Dry the remaining moisture from the connector with a hairdryer.
- Water deposits may remain in the connector. To remove it we use alcohol. Soak a piece of bandage in alcohol and wipe it.
- Once the alcohol treatment is completed, let it dry again.
When all stages of resuscitation are safely completed, you can insert the battery into the device. If nothing bad happened to the contacts located in the connection connector, then you will hear sound.

Cleaning headphones with hydrogen peroxide
So, we are faced with the task of cleaning earwax, which actively accumulates on the body of the headphones during operation. Sulfur itself is not exactly dirt, but rather a defense mechanism. It is produced by the human body in order to keep out dust, bacteria and small debris particles.
Over the course of my life, I have tried different methods. I washed old headphones under running water and dried them in a bag of rice. And they worked for quite a long time! With modern “ears” such a trick will no longer work. I will show you a method that always helps me quickly and easily clean earwax from headphones and not kill them with this cleaning. And ordinary hydrogen peroxide, which can be bought at any pharmacy, will help us with this.
Note: A small digression regarding the use of alcohol. Very often I see advice on forums and blogs to perform this cleaning with alcohol. I tried this and got completely the opposite result! Alcohol does not dissolve sulfur, but on the contrary - under its influence, sulfur turns into harder lumps, which are even more difficult to remove. Moreover, alcohol itself, being a good solvent, destroys the adhesive base and can even damage rubber seals.
To clean the headphones, we need ordinary hydrogen peroxide, which is available at the pharmacy, cotton swabs and cosmetic cotton swabs. I highly recommend not picking with matches and toothpicks!
Pour peroxide into a low, flat container. A plastic lid from a jar or bottle is perfect. You only need to pour a little bit - so that when you put the headphones in there, the headphones are not completely immersed in the peroxide, but only the mesh grids. The headphones will be soaked for 20-30 minutes, after which they need to be taken out and cleaned of any remaining dirt and sulfur using cotton swabs.
Then blot them well with a cotton swab or soft absorbent material and put them in a dry, warm place for 3-4 hours. Only after such thorough drying can the headphones be connected and their performance checked.
Features of cleaning vacuum headphones
Vacuum headphones differ from regular ones in that they have special rubber earbuds that are inserted into the ears. They are the ones who collect most of the dirt and earwax on themselves. Fortunately, the earbuds are removable and easy to clean.
It is also best to rinse them in hydrogen peroxide, helping yourself with a cotton swab
In some cases, you can use a toothpick, but this must be done extremely carefully so as not to damage the liner
If the mesh filters of the headphones themselves are heavily contaminated with sulfur, they can also be immersed in peroxide for 20-30 minutes. The main thing is to lower it so that there are only meshes in the peroxide. After this, all that remains is to remove the remaining dirt with chopsticks and dry the headphones.
How to quickly clean EarPods and AirPods Pro
Now the fun part is cleaning expensive Apple headphones - EarPods and AirPods Pro. On the one hand, these are still the same liners. But only quite expensive ones. And in the case of AirPods, they also have built-in batteries, which means it’s completely undesirable to get them wet!
Let's start with wired Apple Airpods. They have a built-in non-removable mesh that cannot be removed. So let's do it this way. First, remove large stains with a toothbrush:
Some people manage to do this usually with a needle, but I don’t favor this method.
After rough cleaning, thoroughly moisten a cotton swab with peroxide and place the EarPods mesh headphones on the damp cotton wool and press down a little. They should be left in this position for 20 minutes to allow the earwax to soak. After this, remove the remaining dirt with cotton swabs.
The second method is suitable for those who are afraid to get their AirPods headphones wet, but really want to clean them. This life hack will help us with this! There are special adhesive pads on sale that are somewhat reminiscent of chewing gum or plasticine. The brand I prefer is UHU Patafix.
We take the pad, apply it to the earphone grille and press it so that the adhesive mass can catch the sulfur and dirt. After that, open the AirPods pad. We do the same with the side meshes:
Let's look at the result. You can see what I got in the photo. In my opinion, excellent! And most importantly - it’s safe for the device!
PS:
In conclusion, I’ll tell you a little about how you can clean the wires and plug of your headphones. To clean the wire, you can use a regular damp cloth. We put the wire on it, and fold the napkin itself in half. We pull the wire through the resulting filter several times until it is clean.
The headphone plug, as well as the connector where it is inserted, are wiped with regular alcohol. If the plug is very dirty, then regular baking soda will help clean it, which works great as an abrasive for dirt, but does not damage anything!
Chlorhexidine
Chlorhexidine is my latest find, recently recommended to me by friends who sell hearing aids.
They recommend that their clients regularly wipe these devices with it. There are no components in it that can damage the headphones, but the antimicrobial effects are simply excellent: it will kill staphylococci, streptococci and other rubbish.
Along with it, I use ear sticks and cotton pads. The first are for internal use, and the second are for external use. Everything is fine and I’m not afraid to give headphones to friends who have their own illnesses. It’s generally cool to always have such a thing with you - for example, in a car first aid kit.
Guys, I’ve been using almost all of this for a long time and about liquids I tried to communicate with specialists who are in the know. But you still do all this at your own peril and risk, keep this in mind. However, it's better to try cleaning very dirty headphones than to throw them away altogether. What do you use?
