Denim skirt pattern: sewing, for a girl, do it yourself

Every mother or grandmother probably has old jeans made of good denim in her wardrobe. Jeans is a good natural material, which is especially valuable in children's clothing. We will help you sew a skirt for a girl with your own hands from old jeans. We hope that the patterns posted in this article will be useful for you in future sewing for your beloved princess.

Building a pattern

The success of the work will depend on an accurate and correctly constructed pattern. It is carried out according to individual measurements.

What measurements will you need?

To achieve a good fit of the product on your figure, you need to take the following measurements:

  • waist and hip circumferences,
  • length from the waist to the floor and the estimated bottom in front, side and back.

ATTENTION! Measurements are taken on a naked figure. The measuring tape should not be stretched or sagging. A belt is tied at the waist to ensure accurate measurements.

We record all measurements in centimeters.

  • To find the waist line, press the bent arm at the elbow towards the body. Where the elbow ends is where the waist ends. The tape should run horizontally.
  • To measure hip circumference, place the tape horizontally slightly below the waist . We lower it to the widest point in order to pass through the closed tape along the entire length of the skirt.
  • To accurately measure length, it is better to use this method. The desired front length is 50. The distance from the waist line to the floor in the front is 103. The difference between measurements is: 103-50=43. The length of the sections of the structure is set as follows: front - 103-43=60. Side: 105-43=62, back - 103-43=60. In the example, the difference in length measurements is 2 cm. This is how much the side length rises above the midpoints of the front and back panels of the skirt.

IMPORTANT! The girths for constructing the drawing are divided in half, since we are building only half of the part.

The basis for constructing a classic denim skirt

To work, you can take a ready-made drawing of the base of the skirt and adjust it to your size.

You can also prepare the base yourself. To do this, we will build a mesh and then a drawing on it.

ATTENTION! When constructing a grid, all lines must be strictly perpendicular.

  • We start from point A, put the length of the product down and get point D (front line).
  • In width we measure PB (half hip circumference) plus 1 cm for fit. We get point B (waist line).
  • Now, knowing the length and width, we need to construct a rectangle and get point B.
  • Location of darts. From the points on the hip line we measure 1/6 Pb plus 1 cm. We divide the remaining segment in half and get a side cut.
  • Calculation of darts. From Pb we subtract Pt. The side dart is equal to half of the total amount. The back dart is equal to ½ the side dart plus 1 cm.
  • On the drawing we set aside 2 cm from the point of intersection of the line of the back dart with the waist line to the right and 3 cm to the left.
  • We make the side dart in the same way: 3 cm to the right and 5 cm to the left. Connect the dots.

IMPORTANT! When building the base, seams are not taken into account; do not forget this when cutting.

Modeling a denim skirt

When we have a basic drawing (base), we can model straight, tapered, slightly flared products.

  • We narrow the side seams by 2 cm and connect the new points with the hip line.
  • On the back seam we will make an allowance for a vent 11 cm long and 3.5 cm wide.
  • Let's mark the yoke line on the back panel.
  • We cut the back dart to the yoke line, from the side seam we cut along the yoke line, close the waist dart, it goes into the yoke line.
  • We mark a place for the pocket.
  • On the front panel we make an allowance for the fastener 15 cm long and 4.5 cm wide.
  • We transfer the undercut to the side seam.
  • We outline a pocket, it can be just for decoration (without burlap).

Denim skirt pattern for girls

For sewing, you can take not only new fabric, but also old jeans . They are combined with various materials: knitwear, cotton, silk, lace and so on. Skirts can be sewn either with a belt or with an elastic band.

For girls, we also draw a basic pattern and, after changing it a little, we get an A-line skirt.

REFERENCE. The style of the skirt is suitable for every figure. The bottom line in them is extended to the depth of the dart. The width of the skirt depends on the difference between the waist and hips.

Let's model an A-line children's skirt.

  • On the front panel of the base base, cut along a vertical line from the end of the dart to the line.
  • We close the dart, the skirt will expand along the bottom line.
  • We do the same with the rear panel.

ATTENTION! The bottom of the skirt is widened by the same distance on both the front and back panels.

We sew a children's six-piece skirt in a detailed lesson for beginners

Before you begin, you need to rip out your old jeans. To do this, cut the trouser legs at knee level and rip out the side seams. We also use the upper part for the skirt, as well as for the belt and appliqués.

On paper we make a pattern of one wedge. For this model, the pattern looks like a trapezoid 30 cm high, with a lower base of 24 cm and an upper base of 12 cm. You can use this pattern or make it according to your own measurements, just keep in mind that the upper base is 1/6 of the waist circumference.

Using the pattern, cut out six wedges for the skirt from the fabric.

We sew the resulting wedges together in three pieces, we get the front and back parts. After this, we sew the sides, steam all the seams with an iron and stitch them with a decorative zigzag stitch.

All that remains is to cut out and sew on the belt, hem the bottom of the skirt and make appliqués or other decorations to your liking. The six-piece skirt for the girl is ready.

This is how you can quickly and easily sew a large number of different skirts for your princess, using both old jeans and new fabric.

How to sew a skirt from jeans: 5 master classes of varying difficulty

We have selected master classes of varying degrees of difficulty on how to transform jeans into a denim skirt with your own hands - both for beginners and more experienced craftswomen.

Jeans skirt - classic version: master class

The first method is classic. Using these instructions, you can sew your own jeans skirt to knee length, slightly lower or slightly higher, a straight skirt, slightly tapered or slightly flared. The length of the skirt depends on your desire. Width - depends on the cut of the jeans and the width of the wedges you will insert into the skirt. Skinny jeans with narrow wedges (or one in the front) will make a pencil skirt, flared jeans with wide wedges will make an A-shaped skirt, or a bell skirt. For a straight or slightly tapered model, you don’t have to insert the wedge at the back: the resulting cut will act as a slot. You can hem the bottom of the skirt or leave it unfinished.

So, you will need:

- sewing machine and thread.

1. Decide on the length of the future skirt, add about 3 cm and cut the jeans legs to the desired length.

2. Open the crotch seams of the trousers.

3. Open the middle seams at the front and back.

4. Place the pant leg pieces one on top of the other, trying to form a flat sheet. Please note: if you do not open the middle seams too high, you will end up with a more flared skirt. If you pick up the seams higher and overlap more, you can create a narrower skirt.

5. Sew the seams front and back.

6. From the cut pieces of the legs, cut out 2 pieces for the wedges. If you want to leave the cut at the back as a slot, you will need 1 piece.

7. Place the wedge fabric from the back to the front of the skirt, as shown in the photo. Pin it with pins.

8. Sew the piece to the front along the remaining stitching lines of the jeans.

9. Repeat for the back of the skirt unless you want to leave a slit. If you are leaving a vent, finish the edges of the slit by stitching along the remaining stitching lines of the jeans.

How to sew a baby skirt with ruffles from old jeans

In this tutorial you will learn how to sew a ruffled skirt from old jeans for a girl. Step-by-step instructions with photos will help you quickly sew a beautiful skirt with your own hands. You no longer need to ask unnecessary questions about what kind of children's skirt to sew: simple, summer or fluffy. A denim skirt with flounces, fashionable at all times, can be worn at any time of the year and in any place.

You will need:

  1. Old jeans.
  2. Scraps of denim.
  3. Cotton fabric.
  4. The threads are contrasting and match the color of the fabric.
  5. Tailor's pins.
  6. Wide elastic band.

How to sew?

From old jeans

Old, unwanted denim items can help you experiment at home. For example, if your girl has already outgrown her old skirt, but her waistband is not small yet, then you can simply add one wavy strip of a suitable color. Or take a colored summer fabric, cut it into strips of different lengths, sew it on - and there you have it - a new skirt. And one more option - to a straight skirt, crochet a piece of the required length, and the product looks beautiful both in a single color and from combined threads. It is better to take thread thickness No. 10, if you knit it with No. 20, then the knitting will be more voluminous, which is also beautiful.

Old bell-bottom trousers will serve as material for you. And the more worn they are, the more fashionable the sewn item is. Why flares? Because when you cut the two legs and put them together, you will see a skirt in front of you. You just need to sew the two halves together. It’s easier for beginners to bypass the process of sewing in a zipper; not everyone can do this. It’s easier to tuck and insert an elastic band in the waistband.

Applique and various figures will help decorate the product - stickers are sold in stores. The adhesive backing easily attaches to the skirt, making it easier for you to sew it on. Lace ribbons and frills will help increase the length of the skirt; finishing them will not be difficult.

Don't forget to decorate with beads and rhinestones. The skirt, stitched at the bottom with a zigzag seam, looks beautiful. The cuts need to be processed using an overlocker.

Skirt sewing technology

To sew a denim skirt, a child will only need the upper part of denim trousers - the yoke.

  • if the old jeans are too big in the waistband, then you need to take the excess into the side seams and waistband;
  • in order not to tear off the entire belt from the yoke, you can simply cut the belt vertically at the level of the side seams and cut off the excess;
  • then cut off the excess on the yoke in the side seams, stitch and overcast the allowances, and iron onto the back half.

By the way, I made a summer baseball cap and a universal bag from trouser legs. For what else you can make from old jeans, see my article on what to do with old jeans if you’re tired of them.

Then we connect the belt along the side seams and iron the allowances.

  • since the belt on jeans consists of 2 parts, you first need to connect the belt along the top seam, and then continue the stitching along the bottom from the front side;
  • so that the stitch thickness matches the old stitch, place two spools of identical threads on top and sew in two threads;
  • such a line will be difficult to distinguish from real denim;
  • the zipper on the yoke from old jeans can be removed and the two parts at the front can be joined with a finishing seam.

Preparation of frills

The fabric for the ruffles was left over from shortening a denim skirt. Now you need to cut the flap into two rugs to get closed parts for ruffles 11.0 cm wide.

Next, we place two parallel machine stitches on the parts for assembly.

We cut out the lower tier of the frill from cotton fabric (the width of the frill is 12.0 cm) + 1.5 cm allowance. How to cut frills, read my article on how to sew a dress for a girl with frills. Cut out the underskirt, which is a rectangle in circumference equal to the width of the yoke. The width of the rectangle is equal to the width of the bottom frill 13.5 cm minus 1.0 - 1.5 cm. This will be the actual length of the skirt. Finish the seams on the frill and petticoat. Gather the frill.

Found some unfamiliar words?! Then refer to my dictionary and sewing terms.

We adjust the frills to the circumference of the yoke and baste the top tier of denim, and then the bottom tier to the yoke. Try to ensure that the side seams on the yoke match the seams on the ruffles.

Processing the petticoat

To attach the last bottom tier to the yoke, you need to sew a denim frill along the bottom. We baste and stitch the frill, sew the seam allowance from the frill side and iron it onto the main part. We remove all temporary threads.

Connecting an underskirt with a yoke

We baste the petticoat to the yoke, matching the cuts and seams.

We machine stitch a seam width of 1.5 cm.

We sew the sections from the side of the underskirt.

We process the edges of the frills with a roller seam on a carpet, a zigzag or a Moscow seam. Also, sections can be decorated with bias tape, lace, sewing or decorative braid. I overcast the edge of the denim ruffle with contrasting threads to match the color of the yoke trim.

Attention! For convenience, this step is best done after cutting the frills.

Secure the seam connecting the frills to the yoke with a finishing stitch on the front side.

Final finishing

Children grow very quickly, and sometimes gain weight, sometimes lose weight. To prevent a denim skirt from losing its practicality in the near future, you can insert an elastic band into the waistband.

To do this, we pick up the seam connecting the belt with the yoke at the back and insert 10.0 cm of elastic (slightly less than the width of the belt).

We first grind one end of the elastic, then the other, while the elastic should be tensioned to the desired amount. After which the ripped seam on the belt is secured with a stitch.

To prevent the ends of the threads from spoiling the appearance of the finishing stitch, bring them out between the layers of the belt to the wrong side and cut them off. To do this, take a clamp needle with a large eye and insert the threads into it.

We sew a skirt and handbag for a girl from unwanted jeans

Like many people, I have a warehouse of denim trousers that no one has worn for a long time. When I decided to make something new out of something old, there was no doubt - the jeans would turn into a skirt for my daughter, and also, of course, into a handbag with a clasp!

Among several models that can be altered without pity, I chose blue jeans with a zipper in the side seam and without pockets. Still, the pockets on my trousers are somehow too big for the skirt of a four-year-old girl. And the waistband of these jeans has already been cut off, but I don’t remember why I did it, they’ve been lying around for a very long time. In addition, they were immediately “rejected” due to an uncomfortable cut, and the fabric was in excellent condition.

We will cut by eye, estimating the size of the skirt based on the existing shorts. And we’ll add a lot of lace, of which there are also considerable reserves.

The lace is both recently purchased and from my grandmother’s stocks - purchases were made in the late 80s. And everything would be fine, but I don’t really like that they are snow-white, but I want beige shades. Therefore, we will paint them in tea leaves.

I will also dye a piece of cotton fabric in tea, on which I am going to sew lace. Since we are talking about alterations, let me clarify that cotton fabric is not just fabric, but an age-old, but never used sheet from the same grandmother’s stock, which no one is going to use for its intended purpose.

For coloring, I place two tea bags on a plate. I keep the lace and fabric there for about half an hour. Then I wash them in clean water and lay them out and hang them until they dry.

I make a blank from jeans, cut off the top part approximately corresponding to the size of the shorts. I cut out the side zipper and trim the second side for symmetry.

I begin to sew ribbons onto a piece of cotton, row by row. I didn’t sew the golden one at the bottom, as it is rigid and the edge will prick the legs.

On a cotton ribbon with stitched lace, I sew the edges together, iron them and connect them to the denim top. I iron and sew another layer of lace along the seam of the denim and cotton.

I will insert a wide elastic band, measure how much of a turn it needs to be made, and pin it with tailor’s pins. I sew a zigzag stitch, leaving a small section where I insert the elastic. I also close this section with a zigzag and hide it under cotton lace.

The skirt is ready, let's start sewing the bag!

First, you need to make a pattern based on the shape and size of the clasp.

I fold a sheet of A4 paper in half lengthwise and then crosswise. I straighten it and follow the fold lines when drawing up the pattern so that there is complete symmetry.

I cut out the front and back of an almost square shape and, to make the bag plump, a wide side part that goes into the bottom.

I will cut out the lining from the same jeans, since the fabric is undamaged and the entire surface is suitable for sewing.

I cut out the details of the handbag. I cut the lining a little smaller - 5 mm smaller on all sides. I pin the parts cut out of fabric onto padding polyester (regular, not glued) and cut them out without taking out tailor’s needles. Usually I glue the fabric for handbags with dubbing tape, but since the jeans themselves are thick, I won’t do it this time.

I sew the padding polyester and denim together using a simple zigzag. Then all the excess will be trimmed off, but now we just need to fix the two layers to each other. Then I iron the parts of the bag through gauze with steam - the padding polyester will become thinner and will hold its shape better.

Let's start decorating the handbag. We will partially use the same lace as on the skirt. There was also a golden butterfly - thermal appliqué. In addition to the fact that I glued it on with an iron, I also sewed it along the contour by hand. To make sure it doesn't come off.

I pin together the parts of the bag and sew the stitching. If necessary, you will need to cut off the allowances inside.

We fold the lining and the face with their right sides facing each other and sew along the top edge, leaving an area for turning inside out.

I sew the clasp from the middle. Let's pin a tailor's pin to indicate where to sew.

When I sew, I hold the purse with the wrong side facing me so that I can see where the needle hits. We make the knots from the outside, but pull them inside (as in the photo).

I decided to add apple buttons to the finished handbag and skirt.

The kit is ready.

Useful tips for sewing a denim skirt

  • Make a pattern before purchasing fabric. It will be easier for you to calculate how much material you will need for the skirt.
  • Don’t rush to cut, the fabric needs to be washed, dried and ironed.
  • For a sewing machine, take needles No. 100 or special denim needles No. 80–100. These needles have a very thin point. They are wear-resistant.
  • Buy a quality clasp. Then you won't have to change the zipper on your skirt often.
  • Thick sections of seams must be thoroughly steamed through damp material before sewing . Then the fabric will soften and become thinner. But you still need to sew at low speeds, and it’s better to scroll these places manually.
  • When moving from a thick section to a thin section, place fabric or cardboard under the foot so that the foot has support when sewing.
  • For stitching you will need decorative thread. They fill it from above. The bobbin uses reinforced thread No. 45.

Shoes and accessories

There should be no excesses in a child's image. Children's clothes themselves are very expressive and colorful. The image of a little lady can be completed with such elements as a neckerchief or textile scarf, a contrasting belt and a shoulder bag. A short denim skirt can be worn with sneakers and a compact backpack.

A skirt with lace should be complemented with patent leather ballet flats or strappy shoes. Metal or plastic bracelets or a fashionable watch with a bright strap are suitable as accessories. As for bags, small rectangular or rounded shoulder models are best for girls.

The autumn-winter look will be complemented by thick knitted tights with a smooth or textured surface. Ugg boots or boots with a wide top are in harmony with denim skirts of any style. If when sewing a skirt, trim in the form of leather, colorful fabric or lace is used, then similar elements can appear in accessories and companion clothing.

The image of a young fashionista can be completed with knitted leg warmers, colorful knee socks or colorful wristbands. Which accessories should be preferred depends on the chosen style of clothing. Denim skirts are so practical that they can be combined with almost any wardrobe item.

Fashionable children's skirts made from old jeans - patterns and descriptions

Every mother or grandmother probably has old jeans made of good denim in her wardrobe. Jeans is a good natural material, which is especially valuable in children's clothing. We will help you sew a skirt for a girl with your own hands from old jeans. We hope that the patterns posted in this article will be useful for you in future sewing for your beloved princess.

Skirt with pockets and embroidery

A cool denim skirt can be made from adult jeans. Here we will get more fabric, which is to our advantage. You can sew a beautiful fashionable item for a girl or girl.

To work you will need:

  1. Old jeans.
  2. 4 buttons.
  3. Ready-made patch on pockets, or do-it-yourself embroidery.
  4. Elastic band for the belt.
  5. Scissors, thread.
  6. Pencil, ruler.

We start by measuring the child's waist and determining the length of the skirt. For example: if you take a 5-year-old princess, then the measurements will be approximately the following: waist circumference - 59 cm, length of the skirt from the waist line - 35 cm, hip volume - 68 cm. You can correct the pomp of the lower frill (flounce) by multiplying approx. waist by 2 - this will be the length of the flounce. We will need to cut out the details: a belt, the top of the skirt, 2 pockets, a placket and a flounce.

  1. The belt is cut - width - 12 cm, length - waist circumference plus 16 cm (75 cm). You will get a strip of 12/75 cm.
  2. The top of the skirt is the volume of the hips plus 14 cm for a loose fit, the width is the length of the skirt divided by 2. The result is a stripe of 82/17.5 cm.
  3. Bottom of the skirt - width - 59 cm, multiply by 2. The height of the flounce is 17.5 cm. The result is a stripe of 118/17.5 cm.
  4. Cut the plank arbitrarily, to the length of the top. Make the pocket details out of paper, this will make it easier to figure out what size pocket to make. Then transfer it to fabric and cut it out.

Do not forget about seam allowances of 0.9 - 1 cm.

First, let's deal with the pockets: embroider on them, or sew on stripes. Fold the yoke piece in half and mark the middle with a pencil. We make the strap: we grind it along the length, turn it inside out, sew on the buttons, and adjust it to the middle of the yoke. Then we fold the yoke in half again and mark the location of the pockets with a pencil and ruler. We make sure everything is symmetrical. We baste the pockets using live thread. Let's see: if everything is symmetrical, we sew pockets.

Next, fold the belt and the top section of the skirt yoke right sides together. We sew along the wrong side, departing 1 cm from the cut. We sew around the cut of the belt, turn it inward, and attach it to the yoke. We thread the elastic into the waistband and secure the ends with a couple of stitches. Fold the skirt yoke and stitch along the side seam. We iron the seam and overcast it.

Prepare the bottom frill: make a small fringe along the bottom and sew a line at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from the cut. Manually assemble the frill along the cut, evenly distributing the assembly. Fold the yoke and frill right side to right side and baste. Then sew and process the cut.

That's all. The skirt for your daughter or granddaughter is ready.

Fluffy denim skirt

When I was little, my sister and I (we are twins) had denim lambada skirts that were fashionable at that time. Many girls had skirts like this and, as I remember, everyone really liked them. So I decided to sew a fluffy denim skirt for my little daughter. In the morning, when I put the skirt on my daughter, she twirled in it and said: “Nikulya is a fashionista! Thank you mom!"

Denim skirt for girls

For information on how to sew such a blouse and a Toy Horse, see the links.

So, we cut out 3 strips from denim (see photo). The sizes of the stripes are given for a skirt for girls aged 2-3 years.

Skirt pattern

We sew each strip together. Fold the top edge of the wide strip and stitch it (the width of the hem should be slightly larger than the width of the elastic). Then we take thin strips and, using a thread and a needle, make small ties and tighten them with thread to the desired diameter. We sew the strips to each other in the required order (see photo).
