Cleaning the air conditioner at home with your own hands: step-by-step process

The task of the air conditioner is to cool/heat and purify the air. We are considering a split system consisting of two blocks - internal (indoors) and external (outdoors).

Dust, dirt, everything harmful and unnecessary is retained by filters installed in the indoor unit. All the garbage from the street gets into the external unit - also dust, fluff, leaves, etc. The drainage system also becomes clogged with dirt. About all this briefly, in order further.

Why does the air conditioning system become dirty?

First you need to understand on what principle the air conditioner works and why it needs to be cleaned periodically.

During daily operation, the air conditioner passes through hundreds of cubic meters of air. The air is not always perfectly clean and free of various suspended particles. It is saturated with various household dust and vapors. A household air conditioner is forced to “breathe” all this. Dust settles on its internal and external parts. Condensation also forms naturally - moisture is sucked into the device, which leads to the formation of not only dust, but also mold and dirt. Another common cause of air conditioner contamination, especially in summer, is poplar fluff and insects.

Why do you need to clean your air conditioner, and what happens if you don’t?

Dust and foreign particles are always present in the air, even in a room that is in perfect order. It is part of the natural human environment. The air conditioner is designed in such a way that it absorbs air from the room and outputs cooled or heated purified air.

Naturally, all components of the air, such as dust, wool, spiders and others, settle inside it, simply polluting the equipment. Accordingly, it must be cleaned and cared for like any other equipment. The air conditioner is no exception in this case.

If you do not clean the inside of the units in a timely manner, then in addition to the prospect of failure in the future, the following unpleasant consequences appear:

  • persistent smell of dust in the room, which cannot be eliminated with wet cleaning;
  • harmful bacteria living inside the air conditioner begin to multiply;
  • the energy consumption from the operation of the air conditioner increases;
  • air cooling/heating is significantly reduced;
  • the drainage channel becomes clogged.

How often should you clean your air conditioner and when is the best time to do it?

There is no strictly defined frequency of cleaning the air conditioner. It depends on many individual factors, such as:

  • general cleanliness and dustiness of the room;
  • how often the room is thoroughly wet cleaned;
  • how long during the day the air conditioner runs without stopping;
  • seasonal factor - so, in the summer, especially if the house is located near growing poplar alleys, pollution occurs faster.

It is recommended to do cleaning in the off-season - in spring or autumn, respectively, before and after the summer season, when the household appliance is used at maximum capacity and is exposed to the greatest number of “risk factors” for contamination. In winter, it is recommended to clean it as needed, depending on the intensity of use at that time of year.

Preventive cleaning, even with not very frequent use, is recommended to be carried out once every year and a half.

Do I need to clean my air conditioner after winter?

Modern split systems, unlike previous generation equipment, are used not only for cooling, but also for heating indoor air. Therefore, air conditioners are also often used in winter, when the temperature outside is sub-zero. Heat exchanger filters operate at different capacities and become dirty faster.

Therefore, preventive cleaning is also recommended after winter, especially if the device has been actively used.

Questions and answers

What kind of water is suitable for filling into the tank?

It is preferable to use filtered or bottled water; water designed for steam irons will also work. Hard tap water can clog the sprayer holes.

Is it possible to iron fashionable linens and clothes using a regular press?

If you plan to completely replace the iron with an ironing press, it is better to choose a model with special inserts. But users of conventional presses also adapt over time and iron almost all things without using additional devices.

Is it worth overpaying for the most sophisticated models?

The most expensive models usually have more features. The user must decide whether he needs additional signals and sensors, automatic shutdown systems and dosed steam supply. It is much more important to take into account the power of the device - and it may be higher for models in the mid-price category.

How long will the ironing press last?

According to the instructions, the warranty is issued for a period of 1 to 2 years. Most users report flawless operation of the device for 3 years or longer.

How to care for your abs?

After finishing work, allow the device to cool completely. It is recommended to empty the reservoir of any remaining water and wipe the panels with a napkin. To ensure that surfaces last as long as possible and do not spoil laundry, they must not be treated with abrasives, oils, or aggressive cleaning liquids.

Signs of contamination

Often, the air conditioner itself begins to let the owners know that it is time to carry out preventive cleaning. This is expressed in the following manifestations:

  • noise and crackling noise increases during operation;
  • an unpleasant smell of mold, vinegar, dust appears in the room when the device is running;
  • the efficiency of both heating and cooling air decreases;
  • the indoor unit begins to leak.

If you notice at least one of the listed signs, it’s time to think about cleaning the device.

Necessary cleaning products and tools

Cleaners and disinfectants for air conditioners

Most household air conditioner cleaners on the market come in the form of foam cans or aerosol sprays.

Foam is usually used to clean the heat exchanger itself. After shaking it first, it must be applied evenly over the entire area of the heat exchanger, after which it turns into liquid, washing away contaminants. Detailed instructions should be included with the product upon purchase. Sprays are applied to the heat exchanger and into the intake deflector.

A list of the most popular brands of cleaning products with their characteristics is presented below in table form.

Brand nameMain characteristicsaverage price
EasyCleanThe peculiarity is that it has a selective effect; the chemistry removes contaminants without affecting other materials.
Effective against dust, grease stains, and removes harmful bacteria. Release form: aerosol 500 mg.
About 1000 rubles.
RTUAccording to reviews, this spray is really effective in removing almost all types of contaminants from heat exchangers.
Antimicrobial treatment is also present. Release form: 1 liter spray bottle.
About 2000 rubles.
DOMOIt is a foamy, highly effective cleaning agent for evaporative and condenser heat exchangers of household and automobile air conditioners.About 450 rubles.

Tools

For DIY cleaning you will need the following tools:

  • screwdrivers (flat and Phillips);
  • personal protective equipment – rubber gloves, goggles;
  • a special bag with a water drain, which can be purchased at a specialized climate control store;
  • a spray bottle for rinsing off the cleaning agent;
  • You can first use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and cobwebs from hard-to-reach places.

Service package for cleaning the air conditioner

A service package is a special package made of polyethylene or other materials, sold in air conditioning equipment stores, costs on average 1000-1500 rubles. It is designed specifically for cleaning air conditioners, covering the entire space under the air conditioner, so that when cleaning, all impurities can get there, and you do not have to worry about dirtying the walls.

Is it possible to clean with a steam generator?

When cleaning an air conditioner, in addition, or as an alternative to cleaning with chemicals, a steam generator is often used. The properties of the steam generator allow you to safely remove many contaminants in hard-to-reach places, which is why it has gained a certain popularity. The device generates steam and produces it in the form of a small jet.

But still, the disadvantage of this type of cleaning, unlike chemical cleaning, is the relatively high cost of the steam generator. More often, this method is used by employees of specialized companies for cleaning houses and apartments.

Selection rules

When choosing the right model, you should consider the following characteristics:

  • Device size . The longer and wider the press panels, the faster the laundry will be ironed. However, presses that are too large will take up a lot of space; compact models are much more mobile and easier to remove and retrieve when necessary. Small presses are convenient to take to the country house and on any trip.
  • Pressure . Another function that directly affects the quality of ironing. The average value for household ironing presses is 48-50 kg. More pressure can iron dense fabrics in several folds; less pressure is suitable for processing synthetics and knitwear.
  • Power . The larger it is, the higher the quality of work. The most powerful presses iron clothes in 6 folds, which significantly saves time. They are also useful for processing coarse flax, thick cotton, matting, denim and other complex materials. Less powerful ones (up to 1000 W) are ideal for working with thin, delicate fabrics.

Have you already used an ironing press?

Yes I want to try

  • Vaporization . Most models have a steam function. Some allow dry ironing or ironing with water spraying. The more powerful the steam jet, the thicker fabrics can be ironed.
  • Additional functions . All presses have a small display with indicator lights and temperature controls. Some models are equipped with functions of dosed steam supply, auto shut-off, end-of-work audible signals, and determination of the optimal temperature regime for specific materials.
  • Equipment . The kit may include water bottles, pads, rollers and pads for ironing trim, mini-platforms for processing collars, yokes and sleeves.
  • Price . The most inexpensive models will cost 5,000 – 6,000 rubles, more functional and productive ones cost from 20,000 to 35,000 rubles. The most expensive presses with high productivity are rarely purchased for home use; they are ideal for hotels, food production facilities, and boarding houses.

When choosing a press, it is worth considering how it will be used. If you plan to iron bed and table linen made of thin cotton, mixed fabrics and knitwear, a press with long and wide panels, a power of up to 1200 W and automatic steam supply is suitable.

To work with dense fabrics, you need a press with a power of up to 1500 W. To iron shaped linen made from thin fabrics, items with trim and clothing, you need models with additional accessories: pillows, rollers, sleeve platforms.

How to clean the indoor unit of an air conditioner

How to remove an air conditioner from a wall (and is it necessary to do so)

As a rule, there is no need to completely remove the air conditioner from the wall when cleaning. It is enough to remove its individual parts - the top covers, the fan - to gain direct access to the heat sink and other “internals” and clean them. As mentioned above, it is advisable to use a special service package or any other package of suitable size and strength so that all debris and dirt fall into it during cleaning and not onto the floor and walls.

How to remove the cover

Before you begin disassembling the indoor unit, you must disconnect the air conditioner from the power supply. To open the front cover, study the design of the case, there are three main options:

  • Clips at the bottom. With this option, the lid tilts up. The most common option.
  • Clips on top. Quite a rare option.
  • Clip-free design. The front panel tilts forward and then the lid lifts up.

How to disassemble the indoor unit

  1. After the outer cover is removed, we take out the coarse filter (looks like a lattice mesh), then proceed to the body of the internal device. The block has self-tapping screws underneath the blinds; most often they are located under decorative plugs. We unscrew these screws.
  2. Under the cover of the indoor unit, where the filters are located, there may also be screws or clips - unscrew/snap them off. Carefully open the lower part of the case.

Cleaning the filter

After the filter is removed, it must be washed with cold running water; if the dirt has become too ingrained, you can place the filter in warm soapy water and let it soak for half an hour.

Afterwards, rinse with cool running water again and let dry naturally. It is not recommended to dry filters using a hair dryer, heater or other devices.

Radiator cleaning

The function of radiators is to change the temperature of the distilled air. Visually, it is one large plate consisting of many smaller ones. Dust between them can be removed with a soft brush; for deeper dirt it is better to use a vacuum cleaner. It happens that grease mixed with dust accumulates on the radiator, which can be cleaned with a stationery knife, but everything is done very carefully. Then you need to rinse the radiator with water.

Cleaning the fan

There is a fan under the radiator. This is a shaft with a blade that supplies air to the room. Severe contamination can lead to failure of the entire device.

To avoid this, you need to spray a special detergent onto the fan cavity. After waiting for some time, the fan turns on at low speeds, the dirt mixed with the product begins to blow out, so it is important to use the service package. Next, remove any remaining dirt with a brush.

When cleaning the fan, you need to be extremely careful not to damage its blades.

Cleaning the heat exchanger

This is one of the most important parts of the air conditioner. For good heat transfer, the plates must be in contact with air flows; contamination of these plates significantly worsens this contact and, as a consequence, heat transfer. To clean a not very dirty evaporator, it will be enough to remove dust from the plates; for more complex situations, you will have to use a steam cleaner or vacuum cleaner.

How to clean the air conditioner drain (drain tube)

If the drainage systems are not cleaned for a long time, the air conditioner will simply leak. The thing is that both dust and dirt, as well as fungi or mold, accumulate in the drainage pipes. All this can clog the tubes very badly, in which case the water outflow through them will stop, and the water will go inside.

There are several ways to clean your air conditioner drain:

  • washing with water and various detergents;
  • flushing the separated drainage with air blowing;
  • complete disassembly of the unit and washing.

At home, the easiest way is to resort to the first option. Special detergents with fat-dissolving properties, such as dishwashing liquid, are suitable for it.

Press device

  • Pressure plate - a surface with a certain temperature used to heat and press fabrics;
  • Ironing disc for opening and closing the pressure plate;
  • Drain valve for draining water from the boiler;
  • Steam knob for producing high temperature steam;
  • Ironing board - a surface that holds fabric during ironing;

Purpose

Pressed bed linen, any clothing (shirts, trousers, shirts, sweaters); irons outerwear well and can be used to steam delicate fabrics.

Self-cleaning of the outdoor unit of the air conditioner

Design of the external unit of the air conditioner

The external unit of the air conditioner consists of the following components:

  • compressor – compresses freon, supports the movement of freon along the refrigeration circuit;
  • four-way valve - when the heating mode is active, it changes the direction of movement of freon;
  • fan - creates a flow of air blowing across the condenser;
  • the control board is located in the external unit only in inverter air conditioners;
  • freon system filter – designed to protect the compressor from small particles;
  • lid.

Cleaning the external unit can be carried out in cases where it is located in a safe place - on a balcony, at the level of the first - second floor, when it can be safely reached using a ladder. If you have adequate access to the outdoor unit, cleaning it will not be very difficult.

When starting to clean the external unit, you first need to disconnect the split system from the power supply. The elements that need cleaning - the radiator and the fan - are located under the outer cover of the case; to do this, you need to unscrew it and carefully remove it. First of all, you need to clean the radiator with a vacuum cleaner to try to remove branches, poplar fluff and other elements of contamination.

Then wipe the fan, tray and condenser with a damp sponge. After cleaning is completed, the outer cover is screwed back on.

How to use

Before clicking on an item of clothing, decipher the symbols on the clothing label. If you see a crossed out iron, you won't be able to iron your clothes at all. It can also be a symbol indicating the temperature at which the clothes can be ironed and a symbol that does not allow ironing.

Operating modes

Dry ironing – applies to synthetic fabrics (nylon, nylon, perlon). Ironing with steam is necessary for processing linen, cotton fabrics, home textiles, shirts, jeans, kitchen towels and bed linen. Ironing with soil - used for ironing delicate items: silk, wool, knitwear.

The best way to iron wet clothes after spinning in the washing machine is to iron the clothes taken out of the washer-dryer or dryer. If clothes are too dry, use a spray humidifier.

Instructions

Place the workpiece on the bottom plate, smooth out any wrinkles with your hands, and slowly lower the press holder. Ironing time depends on the type of napkins and is 3-10 seconds. Large items are placed behind the ironing platform, and as the ironing board moves to the side, this sequence of actions protects the owner from burns. Wide ironing items, moving several times relative to the ironing platform from right to left or vice versa, if you wish.

Tips from the site “House of Soviets”

Each type of textile product requires a competent approach:

Bed linen and sheets are folded in four and placed behind the ironing platform. During ironing, the housewife moves the fabric around herself to minimize the possibility of burns.

Napkins and towels are laid out in the center of the area, large items are folded in half. As for napkins, they can be stacked on top of each other or placed in rows on the ironing surface.

Jeans and trousers - First the waistband is steamed, this is done by placing the top of the trousers on a pad attached to the abs and turning it until the entire waist is smooth. After this, both trouser legs are pressed against the platform, and the side folds are smoothed out with a foam pad.

Corduroy and velvet are ironed on the reverse side with damp gauze. The pressure in the platform should be minimal so as not to crush the pile.

Pleated skirt - carefully spread over the platform, pin the folds and cover them with cotton fabric (so as not to scratch the heating platform). Then we lower the press handle for a few seconds, the pressure should be minimal, remove the pins and close the press again at normal pressure.

Products with beads, sequins and other large-volume elements are pressed by turning the decor downward so as not to scratch the heating pad and not spoil the appearance of things.

What to do if there is mold in the air conditioner

The formation of fungus in the air conditioning system poses a double danger, since unlike, for example, the formation of immovable mold on the wall, the fungus from the air conditioner is constantly carried by the air current throughout the room, forcing residents and everyone inside to breathe it.

Initially, of course, it is better to install air conditioners equipped with an ultraviolet filter. They themselves very effectively prevent the appearance of various types of fungi and mold.

However, if mold has formed, it can be removed. First you need to partially disassemble it according to the diagram presented above. The moldy areas are then carefully cleaned with a brush. Remaining mold and dirt should be thoroughly washed off with a special cleaning agent or soap and water. At the final stage, it is necessary to carefully apply a special antifungal solution based on fungicides to the damaged surfaces.

What is an ironing press

An ironing press is a device designed for a comfortable ironing process. Previously, such devices were used exclusively in industries where ironing had to be done a lot and quickly. In addition, the models were bulky and took an incredible amount of energy. Accordingly, it was impossible to install such an option at home.

Over time, appliance manufacturers have developed more compact models that are suitable for small city apartments. Today, there is more than one type and type of ironing press. Such a device is used for different purposes - some of them moisten the surface of the things being ironed, others work with steam. In addition, using a press you can easily apply thermal applications.

The ironing press works according to the following scheme: first the pressing platform is raised, then the product is laid out for ironing, then the platform is lowered for a couple of seconds and raised again. The output will be an ironed item. It is great for ironing:

  • napkins;
  • sheets;
  • towels;
  • pillowcases;
  • baby diapers.

However, experts assure that those who have fully mastered the art of working with the press can even perfectly iron shirts, jackets, skirts and trousers. The advantage of this type of ironing over an iron is working with knitwear and other stretchy items. An iron often stretches things to the sides, but when using a press, this situation is excluded. It is more convenient to work with the press, because... It turns out to iron clothes while sitting, unloading your back, arms and legs. A good device has such pressure that it can iron up to 6 layers of fabric at once.

Automatic air conditioner cleaning system

Progress does not stand still and today air conditioner models equipped with an automatic cleaning system are appearing on the market. The main function is to pass warm air through the system, thereby drying the baths and filters.

In addition, such systems are often equipped with ionizers for ion cleaning. Air conditioners are equipped with sensor sensors that monitor the composition of the air; if necessary, the cleaning system is automatically activated.

However, you should not think that having purchased such an air conditioner, you can completely forget about its mechanical cleaning. This will only delay its need.

How to choose a household ironing press

Presses are divided into standard and steam. In the first case, we are talking about devices that are designed for dry ironing. Among the additional functions, there is a special nozzle that sprays water, just like in an iron. This helps ease the process of smoothing out creases and dents.

A steam press helps not only iron clothes, but also process them. This means that you can quickly get rid of odors, for example, stale laundry, smoke, etc., and a number of stains. In addition, it helps smooth out lint on woolen items, which gives them volume.

There are a number of factors to keep in mind when choosing the perfect abs. So, for example, if it is required as a replacement for a regular iron, you should pay attention to regular steam models for household use with a certain number of functions. This press allows you to work with synthetics and other artificial fabrics that require low temperatures. It is also worth considering the presence of a sleeve platform - it is required if you have to iron a lot of shirts, jackets, etc. A prerequisite is the choice of the size of the working surface. The press can have a square surface, be rectangular, or rounded on one side.

Also today there are presses with different types of control:

  • mechanical;
  • electronic;
  • sensory.

The second option is the easiest to operate and additionally has automatic shutdown functions (this is suitable for forgetful people). When choosing a press, you should also look at its power. The stronger the technique, the faster it heats up in terms of steam generation. It will be more effective in such a model. The weight of the press can be from 8 to 16 kg. Accordingly, if it does not stand in one place in the house, you should pay attention to lighter models.

Who does the cleaning professionally and how much does it cost?

Professional cleaning services are provided by companies involved in the installation and repair of climate control equipment.

The cost of cleaning an air conditioner is usually around 1,500 rubles. Professionals clean both the external and internal units, as well as the drainage.

A professional cleaning company will usually include a disinfection treatment as part of the package by default. You should be careful when choosing professionals, as it often happens that only superficial cleaning is performed.

Functions of ironing presses

Modern household ironing presses include a wide range of functions. Among the main ones that make the ironing process as easy as possible and calm the nervous system of housewives are the following options:

  • auto shutdown: most presses stop heating if the lid is not lifted for 10 seconds while the device is on - this function protects forgetful housewives from burnt things and fires;
  • enhanced steam supply: this will allow you to iron things better if there are strong creases
  • automatic temperature control: this helps not to burn the fabrics and select the optimal temperatures for a particular type of product;
  • spray function: helps with dry ironing of clothes, so that they can be ironed better in the absence of steam.

In what cases can you not do without a service center?

Cleaning the air conditioner is not such a simple procedure as it might seem at first glance, although with the right approach it is quite possible to do it on your own. Primary cleaning methods are not always effective enough and deeper cleaning is required.

Professionals have the necessary equipment in their arsenal. They will be able to clean out dirt and dust even from the most difficult to reach areas.

You can carry out simple cleaning of the external parts of the air conditioner yourself; you must purchase all the necessary tools in advance and carefully study the technical operating instructions. However, if you are not confident in your abilities and the contamination is serious, it is better to turn to specialists.

Dispensers from different manufacturers

  1. The German group of companies Bosch is the designer of the simplest bunker. Its isolated sections are designed for both receiving bulk substances and liquid solutions. They are combined with each other when selecting certain washing parameters.
  2. The technical equipment from Indesit is distinguished by the presence of a fourth receiver section. It can be added at the right time and is used for bleaching solutions. Naturally, the fundamental sections are sections for the main washing mode and additional compartments for softeners or flavors.
  3. All models from the Samsung manufacturer are equipped with three dispensers in the hopper. The selected standard allows you to use a dry powder mixture for the tray, and add the remaining softener and flavoring components directly to the laundry.
  4. Manufacturers of LG brand models also followed the path of least resistance and did not reinvent the wheel. We offered users a dispenser with standard three compartments. The latter is used for liquids, and the first and second for powder mixtures.

Samsung dispenser

Non-standard solutions

There are users of LG, Ariston, and Samsung units who support the method of adding powder directly to the laundry. The chosen solution significantly reduces consumption, but only if the communication between the dispenser and the drum is broken, through which the soap solution flows poorly. This is easy to find out if you look into the compartment after completing the washing cycle. If residues are not visible, then you can safely use the standard method and not resort to extremes.

Ariston dispenser

New items in the detergent department

Modern manufacturers are introducing technologies of compressed capsules or cubes. According to the recommendations of professionals, it is better to immediately place them in the drum, otherwise the product may not be completely washed out of the cell.
