  • Video
  • Leather has been popular for many seasons; not only outerwear, but also trousers, skirts, and dresses are made from it. Some people buy leather items in pursuit of fashion, while others value their practicality and durability. And although a jacket made of natural material can last for a year, over time its appearance deteriorates.

    A leather jacket can easily be refreshed by tinting it a little (with black everything is simple, for everyone else it is recommended to choose a dye half a tone lighter than the original)

    Faded color and minor scuffs can be easily hidden by painting your leather jacket. To breathe new life into an old item, you don’t have to resort to the help of dry cleaning or other specialists. You can revive your skin at home, spending a minimum of effort and money on the procedure.

    Features of painting a leather jacket

    Leather products are one of the types of wardrobe items that cannot be washed in the usual way. Because things can lose their shape. But painting such products requires cleaning their surface from dirt. How then? Everything is simpler than it might seem at first glance.

    In order to remove impurities on the skin, the following manipulations are carried out:

    1. Make a weak soap solution using baby soap or baby dishwashing detergent;
    2. Using this solution, use a sponge or microfiber to treat each area, not forgetting about the accessories on the item and the seams;
    3. Remove traces of dirt and soap scum using a clean soft cloth or sponge;
    4. The product is thoroughly dried, avoiding contact with heating devices.

    Advice! After the leather item has been washed using the above method, it is thoroughly dried. Otherwise, the dye may cause more harm than good. And the product may not be subject to further wear.

    Safety regulations

    In order for painting to take place without consequences for the body, the following recommendations must be followed:

    • ventilate the premises;
    • at any stage (cleaning, painting, finishing) work only with gloves;
    • carry out processing away from children, animals and food.

    Adviсe

    Putting a leather item in order is quite simple if you take the advice of professionals who are involved in eliminating defects not only in wardrobe items. And also on interior products.

    • Masters of leading dry cleaners advise that before painting a leather product, pay special attention to its color.
    • If black leather does not cause much trouble when dyeing it, then other shades can behave completely unpredictably.
    • Therefore, for all colors except black, it is recommended to select a dye half a tone lighter.
    • This will help avoid problems such as poor-quality staining.
    • When the paint does not lay down evenly, it will not be very noticeable. Or the procedure can be repeated again to achieve the best result.

    As for other shades, it is quite difficult for a non-professional to work with them. Since it is very difficult to choose the right dye color, even if it can be done. The result may not please you, but rather upset you. And then you will have to find another use for the painted product or buy another option.

    Therefore, in order not to spoil your favorite thing. For example, a red leather jacket is best left to a professional.

    What do you need for work?

    Dyeing a leather item at home does not take much time. To perform this manipulation you will need the following items:

    • Rubber gloves to protect your skin;
    • Foam sponge, microfiber or soft cloth. To remove excess paint;
    • Coloring matter. This may be an aerosol, paint or other means. It is better to purchase them in double volume, in order to avoid a situation where the dye unexpectedly runs out.

    Before applying the dye, the item is hung on hangers. Or they place it on a trempel, which is placed in a convenient place where there will be no other things nearby.

    Also, before the procedure, you need to check how the dye behaves on the skin. To do this, it is applied to an inconspicuous area. For example, on the back of the product. If the check is successfully completed, they get down to business.

    Fighting abrasions

    Abrasions that appear on the surface of the jacket are a known problem. Over time, the paint on the product wears off in areas of friction, which gives the jacket the appearance of an old product. But you can fight this too. We offer an effective way to restore a leather jacket from scuffs.

    Orange zest has the miraculous ability to hide chafed areas of the skin. You need to rub it on the places where the product is worn. As a result, wear and tear will be less noticeable and the leather will regain its shine.

    Dyes and their features

    As noted above, there are four leather dyes. Regardless of the composition, they have their own characteristics for applying and drying things.

    Aerosol

    One of the most popular dyes for leather products. It is recommended to use it in open spaces with a respirator. This is necessary to avoid inhaling hazardous aerosol substances.

    • The dye is applied at a distance of 25-30 cm from the object.
    • At the same time, you should not pay much attention to one area, so as to avoid uneven coloring.

    If drips are detected, they are removed with a cloth or sponge.

    Cream paint

    It is sold in special packs. Before use, pour it into a bowl and apply with a dry sponge. It is important here that the same layer of paint is applied to each defect.

    • A denser layer is applied to decorative elements, seams and places near locks.
    • Dry naturally.
    • And after a few hours the painted product is used.

    Powder with coloring pigment

    This product is used after dissolving in water. Not so popular with buyers. Because even the slightest undissolved grain can get on the skin and cause irreparable harm to it.

    Therefore, before using the powder, it is recommended to strain its solution through a sieve. And only after making sure that it is uniform, use it for work.

    Liquid dye

    Somewhat reminiscent of the above option, but used more often. Having some nuances of application. The first thing they do with the item to be painted is soak it in clean water for a couple of hours. In the meantime, dilute the dye in the liquid, taking into account the instructions in the instructions. The item is then pulled out of the water and moved into the coloring pigment.

    And leave it for the period specified in the instructions, not forgetting to turn it over periodically. When all the steps are completed, the item is taken out of the dye, rinsed thoroughly with water and dried naturally.

    Also, in order for the paint to last longer, it is recommended to fix it. This is done in two ways. The first is to purchase a purchased product.

    Or the second option, the solution is prepared as follows:

    1. Take 1 liter of water, mixing it with 2 s/l. salt and 100 gr. vinegar. Mix everything thoroughly;
    2. Dip the product into the solution, rinsing it a couple of times;
    3. Dry the product naturally.

    And another way to fix the dye is to wipe the surface of the object with a weak solution of vinegar. And also dry it.

    Painting leather at home is the best method if the item is black or you want to save your family budget by postponing dry cleaning services.

    Coloring methods

    1. Surface. The paint is applied only to the outer side, the skin is painted pointwise, locally. Any type of dye is suitable. Before painting, the skin area is degreased with acetone, then 2-3 layers of paint are applied and dried.
    2. Deep. The surface of the leather jacket is saturated with dye: the item is completely soaked in it for the length of time recommended by the paint manufacturer. Next, the jacket is fixed on a wooden furniture board for drying. Additionally, paint fixative and fat impregnation can be used. During soaking, the jacket must be constantly turned over to achieve even coloring.

    Stage 3. Restore shine to skin

    Natural leather gradually loses its shine when exposed to the sun. However, this process is reversible. You can restore the leather of your jacket and restore its gloss:

    Method 1. Vodka with lemon juice
    • add the juice of one citrus fruit and 5 ml of alcoholic beverage to 4 glasses of water (1 liter);
    • mix the composition;
    • moisten the sponge well with the solution;
    • apply the liquid to the surface of the clothing;
    • wipe the skin with a rag
    Method 2. Laundry soap and ammonia
    • pour half a teaspoon of alcohol into a thick soap solution;
    • stir the composition;
    • wipe your clothes with it
    Method 3. Coffee grounds
    • wrap the coffee grounds in a piece of woolen cloth;
    • treat clothes
    Method 4. Glycerin
    • wipe the item with glycerin;
    • dry on hangers;

    Glycerin for leather jackets - softener, adds gloss

    Handy products for painting eco-leather

    Eco-leather differs from genuine leather in that its base is polyurethane. The remaining components are natural. The material is used for the manufacture of furniture upholstery, accessories, clothing, and shoes. As with leather, natural dyes, aniline dyes, and silicone spray are used.

    Spray with silicone helps to distribute the paint evenly over the entire surface of the material. A protective film is formed, which gives the eco-leather additional resistance. The products are colored and colorless. They color eco-leather, serve as additional protection, add shine, and increase wear resistance. The dyeing process is the same as for natural leather.
