How to lengthen jeans - the main methods and options for increasing the length of jeans at home (video + 100 photos)

People have been wearing jeans for several centuries and over time they are only becoming more popular. And there is no reason not to love them. Denim fabric is durable, products made from it are wearable and comfortable.

We can wear them for years and become attached to them. But suddenly the jeans become loose during washing or your child grows up, then there are several ways to lengthen short jeans.

Ways to lengthen jeans

Restoring your favorite trousers will take a little time, the main thing is to arm yourself with knowledge. You can lengthen your jeans with your own hands like this:

  • Pull up the bottom of your trousers.
  • Make inserts in the middle of the trouser legs along their entire circumference.
  • Lengthen the product by stretching.

The first two methods are the most profitable and attractive, but they require some skills and abilities.

The last method can be tried by absolutely everyone and in any conditions. But keep in mind that if the fabric is made of elastane, the elastic thread may burst and blisters will form on the trousers in places where the thread is stretched or damaged.

If the jeans are made of denim, then you won’t be able to lengthen them too much, and in the best case, not for long.

Increasing length with an iron

An excellent option would be to place the damp trousers on an ironing board and iron them. Pull each section of the trouser leg as long as possible and iron it. Wet fabric will stretch and dry out after it has been stretched.

Walk along the entire length of each pant leg on both sides at least once (as needed to dry completely). If you are tall, these methods will easily help you solve the problem of short jeans.

What should the length be and how to measure it

How to correctly measure the length of trousers? The classic measurement of trouser length is taken with a soft centimeter from the waist line to the bottom of the heel in the center of the back surface of the leg. You need to stand on the floor straight and without shoes. No need to measure length from the side or front.

But if you don’t want the front of the foot of the trousers to have a fold, then measure the length of the trousers to the middle of the heel - this will be the finished length of the product.

The length of the trousers depends on fashion and your preferences. Choose: 3/4, short (to the ankle), classic - cover the heel or slightly shorter (from the floor to the bottom edge of the trousers 1-3 cm).

Stretching with an expander

There are many extenders that can help you with this matter. For example, there are devices in the form of clothes hangers that can increase in size (hangers) or a special device designed for this. Wash or wet your pants, put them buttoned on the expander and continue increasing the length until you reach the desired point for the size increase you need.

How to make an insert in the middle of trousers

This option is difficult, but very interesting and unusual. You can cut trousers in different ways:

  • straight cut;
  • oblique cut.

Consider a straight cut. We cut off the trousers exactly in the center of the knees, measuring in advance and drawing a straight line on the leg. We make the insert from identical fabric or similar in color and thread weave. Cut out a strip of the desired height and length and sew it on.

To style it, the insert can be cut into several pieces and re-sewn. Or, without cutting, make folds that are stitched with a double seam, imitating a cut.

If the jeans have a double decorative stitch on the side, then it will be difficult to sew the fabric not only by hand, but also by machine. Therefore, support the side stitching, sew the part and then topstitch with threads of the same color as before.

You can lengthen your jeans using unusual details - lacing or chains. Cut the trousers in the middle, higher or closer to the bottom. The cut edges can be hemmed, overlocked, or fluffed up as a fringe.

Then insert eyelets (small diameter metal rings) onto both parts of the trouser leg in parallel(!), at an equal distance from each other.

You can thread a cord through the eyelets, connecting both halves, without tightening it too much. You can also attach metal or plastic chains of the same length to the eyelets using rings.

Having cut the trouser legs diagonally, we very carefully cut out the fabric for insertion. It also needs to be cut obliquely so that the grain goes from bottom to top or vice versa. A lace insert will look very original.

The trouser sections can be processed or left as is. Place the lace insert on top and sweep it by hand, check for movement, and measure. Then stitch.

An easy way to change the waist of jeans from low to high (14 photos)

Low-rise jeans are not always comfortable. A high one allows you to hide figure flaws, emphasize the waist and lengthen your legs. We received a lot of feedback on our master class “How to easily raise the waist on low-waist jeans.” In it, the waist is raised due to the length of the legs. The pants are shortened by several cm and the waist level becomes higher. Some people write that they don’t want to shorten their jeans and lose 4-5 cm from the bottom, because they are satisfied with the length of their trousers. Today we are redesigning low-waist jeans without shortening the length of the trousers. High-waisted jeans are the most popular style of trousers, both among young girls and older women. Today we will show you how you can raise your waist without shortening your pant legs. We’ll also share ideas on how to make jeans taller in other ways!

These are low-waisted jeans that press into my sides. I'm going to replace the jean belt with an elastic one. It is a little wider and therefore the waist will rise by 3 cm, the elastic band will slightly tighten my volumes, due to which the waist will look narrower and slimmer. The elastic will not dig into the sides, so the jeans will be more comfortable. The first thing to do is to support the belt loops and waistband from the main part of the trousers, then cut the desired length of elastic. We need to hide the raw top of the jeans. There are two ways to do this: If you have thin fabric, then fold the elastic and the top edge of the jeans with the wrong sides facing each other so that the elastic protrudes slightly beyond the jeans and sew them together close to the edge. Now we unfold the elastic and it turns out that the edge of the elastic covers the raw edge of the jeans and when sewing it will remain inside. He will no longer be visible. If the jeans are thick, the fold in the seams will be even thicker and may cause discomfort. Therefore, you can simply overlock the edge and sew the elastic on top. We will follow this path. We pin the elastic with pins: two on the sides, two at the edges and between them to evenly distribute the elastic. Sew the elastic to the jeans with an elastic stitch and bend the edges of the elastic. Almost done! All that remains is to sew on the fasteners. The elastic band is wide, we can’t do it alone. Depending on the width of the elastic, you will need two or three fasteners. It turned out very neatly, and believe me, they became much more convenient! You can find elastic bands of different widths and interesting colors; they will not only give you pleasure when wearing them, but also decorate you. If you don’t have a wide elastic band, I can give you some ideas for very interesting alterations: Sew on a rectangle of suitable fabric (in this example, not denim), the top side of which has loose threads and a fringe. It is tied with a belt made of the same fabric. You can rip off the belt and loops and sew a tall, beautiful belt from a fabric that matches the color. A knitted belt with a rope is original and stylish. Loose waistband with button, loops and strap in the same fabric. I wish you comfortable jeans and successful implementation of your ideas! Thank you for your attention!

How to lengthen jeans without scissors, needles and threads

Soak the jeans in slightly soapy water and let them drain a little. Then place it on a thick, dry towel or non-fading blanket and twist it into a tight rope.

Be sure to straighten and stretch your jeans before twisting. When the blanket or towel gets wet, change it to another one.

Then, stretching and twisting. Repeat this procedure until the jeans are almost dry. Then you can finish drying the trousers on the clothesline.

Unfortunately, the traction effect will not last long. In the heat of summer, soap granules can get on the skin and sting.

Stretch wide

There are many ways to stretch the width of jeans without resorting to alterations. For example, you can wet the item, then place it on an ironing board and iron it, stretching small areas of the fabric as much as possible.

An excellent solution would be to put jeans steamed in hot water or over steam on a cylindrical object (for example, a bucket or pan of the required volume). You can also pull them out with your hands, using all your own efforts or asking someone to help.

How to lengthen men's jeans

It is better to add men's jeans using denim or regular fabric. Choose plaid, striped or plain fabric. It is better to put regular fabric on the bottom.

If you want to make your jeans more interesting, but not provocative, then make a denim insert in the middle of the trousers or just below the pockets.

An insert with many finishing lines, vertical, horizontal, and located diagonally, will look beautiful and quite stern, masculine. You can add more details in the form of a strap, pocket or valve.

An extension made of leather (smooth or suede) in a dark color will look impressive.

Pulling in length using mechanical movements

If you want to stretch your jeans to your desired size, you need to use a very simple and proven method. Lightly wet the trousers in water or wet them completely, but without waiting for complete drying, proceed to the next steps. Take them in your hands and lower them vertically to the floor so that you can step on the edge of the pant legs. Press them with your feet, leaning with all your weight, and at the same time pull them up. This way you can easily add a few centimeters of length. An excellent solution to stretching your jeans quickly and efficiently is to ask someone to help you.

How to lengthen women's jeans

To increase the length of women's jeans, all the options proposed above are appropriate. Tenderness and femininity will be emphasized by decorative details, bright fabrics, lace or sewing. Translucent lace sewn above the knees will look sexy.

Lacing with chains and eyelets for eccentric, daring and extraordinary people.

Fabric inserts with roses, polka dots or geometric shapes will help jeans take on a more playful, bright and attractive look.

How to avoid shrinkage

Denim does not like frequent washing, so you cannot put the item in the washing machine after one day of wear. It is recommended to remove dirt with a sponge or brush, and refresh it with frost. To do this, the pants are placed in a bag and put in the freezer for several hours. It is imperative to follow the basic rules so that the product lasts longer.

Rules of care

First of all, you should study the label that is sewn on the inside of the trousers. It indicates the washing mode, permissible water and ironing temperatures. The recommended water temperature is no more than 30-40 degrees; at 60, jeans will shrink in 100% of cases. Denim should not be squeezed, rubbed vigorously or left in boiling water for a long time. Excess moisture is removed with a towel. The soaking time is up to 60 minutes, as metal elements may oxidize.

Detergents

Black and blue denim fades; to avoid this, you need to add vinegar (4 tbsp) to the water, which fixes the dye. Laundry soap is suitable for hand washing, and liquid gels or capsules for machine washing: Tide, Persil or Laska. They wash out well when rinsed and do not leave white marks on dark items.

Drying and ironing

Jeans should be wrung out at low speeds; the machine dryer must be turned off. It is permissible to use steam or iron clothes through gauze; the maximum permissible temperature is indicated on the label. After washing, a denim product usually shrinks; for this reason, when ironing, you need to stretch it with your hands.

Buying trousers without trying them on is dangerous, as they may turn out to be small. It is easy to expand jeans in width, but it is quite difficult to increase them in length. There is always a way out - make a fringe or sew lace along the bottom, insert an elastic band into the waistband, stripes into the side seams.

How to lengthen children's jeans

For children's trousers, most of the methods described can be used, with the exception of chain inserts and eyelets to avoid injury.

It is very convenient to add knitted cuffs to children's jeans or simple trousers, which are sold in specialized stores. The width of the cuff varies, as does the height. It’s very easy to sew on; you don’t have to rip the hem of the trousers.

Children's jeans can easily be lengthened not only at the bottom, but also at the top, as well as in the middle of the trousers. Because in children's clothes, inserts always look harmonious if everything is sewn neatly and tastefully.

For an extension at the top, the belt is ripped off and a wide cuff or wide elastic band is sewn on.

Bows, buttons, pockets, flaps or patches will enliven children's trousers.

Interesting, but not that, be smart and figure out how else you can lengthen your jeans!

The nuances of different types of stretching

To avoid deformation of the item, you need to take into account the composition of the fabric. There are natural and synthetic fibers that are included in denim - the degree of stretch depends on this.

Cotton

Women's cotton trousers will shrink after the first wash, but they should stretch easily. As a rule, it is enough to put the item on yourself so that it fits your figure. You can walk around in wet jeans until they dry, or run an iron and steam over them, stretching them with your hands.

Stretch

Stretch jeans beautifully hug the buttocks, calves and thighs, making the figure attractive. However, it is often difficult to put them on, especially if the product shrinks after washing. They are increased by one size using the same methods:

  • carry it around by putting it on when wet;
  • wet and pull vigorously in different directions (or use an expander);
  • steam with an iron for 5-7 minutes.

It is advisable to put the product on yourself and fasten it with a zipper, otherwise it will be difficult to widen the trousers at the waist. If this fails, you can ask someone with a smaller size to wear jeans. After a few days, the volume will increase by 0.5-1 cm and they can be easily fastened.

Drying rules

To prevent jeans from stretching, they need to be dried properly. That's right, that means fast. The fact is that regular drying, which takes from 5 to 10 hours, only contributes to the stretching of the fabric - the fibers have time to become straight and recover. This does not happen during fast drying. To make your jeans dry quickly:

  • hang them next to the radiator or stove, or in the sun;
  • put a fabric under your jeans that will absorb excess moisture;
  • Use a tumble dryer if possible.

Attention! Remember that each method that helps to shrink jeans changes not only the width of the waist and hips, but also the length of the legs.

When purchasing new pants, always try them on well.

If the material stretches a lot, it is better to take a jeans size smaller. Choose quality denim or gin. Be sure to follow the washing rules. You can also stretch your jeans after washing if they have shrunk too much at home using improvised methods.
