Acrylic bathtubs have recently become very popular. Many myths have grown up around them, which call into question the convenience and durability of bathtubs made from this material. In this article we will try to answer the most pressing questions that concern consumers and finally figure out: is an acrylic bathtub so dangerous to use and can it live a long life?
How and with what to clean (wipe) the bathtub from traces of hair dye?
There are hair dye stains on the bathroom, we tried to clean it with just a sponge and rinse it off with water, but it didn’t work.
How to clean a bathtub from traces of hair dye, what to wash it with?
Of course, it’s better to immediately rinse off the hair dye with warm water and not allow it to dry on the surface of the bath, but if this happens, you can do the following:
First you need to decide what material the bathtub is made of.
For example, an acrylic bathtub should absolutely not be cleaned using abrasive cleaners; you will simply scratch it.
Yes, and it is better not to clean a steel bathtub with abrasive agents; in principle, it is possible to clean a cast iron bathtub, but be extremely careful.
Hair dye is different, the condition of the bath can also be different, if the enamel surface is rough, then the hair dye will be more difficult to remove.
You can clean it with soda, add literally a couple of drops of table vinegar and liquid dishwashing detergent to the soda, mix, and in the end you should get a paste-like mass.
Next, either with a soft brush, or a cotton pad, or a soft sponge, apply this mixture to the surface and rub into the dirt.
Leave for 5-10 minutes and rinse with water, warm water is better, but not hot.
You can try to remove the paint with regular (white) toothpaste, but in the case of a cast-iron bathtub, tooth powder will do.
Apply the paste to an old toothbrush (you need a soft one) and scrub the stain, finally rinse with warm water.
If this doesn’t help, then you can buy a special bath cleaner (you can also use it to clean sinks) I bought this one
Spray the product onto the paint stain, leave for 10-15 minutes, rinse with warm water, and when rinsing with water, you can additionally work with a soft sponge.
Somehow I already had the opportunity to tell my story about how I cleaned an enamel sink from just spilled hair dye.
The surface of the sink and bathtub, if they are enameled, is identical in composition.
In principle, the same method is suitable for metal bathtubs, and also in some cases for plastic, but not for acrylic ones; in my purely personal experience and opinion, it is absolutely impossible to remove traces of paint from the surface of an acrylic bathtub. If you use this method in an acrylic bath, the paint stains will only become discolored, but will not be completely removed.
So, first of all, take two components that, in principle, can be found in any kitchen, these are ordinary baking soda and ordinary mustard powder.
Mix these products in a ratio of approximately three parts baking soda and one part mustard powder.
Arm yourself with a hard brush (a toothbrush will do) with the hairs cut in half, or buy one at a hardware store; there are very hard brushes with plastic bristles.
Next, we do this: wet the bathtub with hot water in the place of the spilled paint, pour soda and mustard onto it and try to clean the paint stains with a brush.
If the paint is fresh and has not had time to soak into the surface of the bathroom, then it is quite possible that after 3-4 changes of soda and when your hand hurts from fatigue, you will be able to wipe off the paint stains.
If soda with mustard powder did not help, then go to the store to buy special products for cleaning enamel and tiles, just look, they come in two types, one alkaline based and the other acidic.
Depending on what kind of paint you had and what components it was made from, either acid or alkali products should suit you.
There are no special secrets for using them, look at the instructions and act, the only nuance that I personally learned from my own experience is that you cannot use them for more than the time that is written in the instructions, otherwise the top layer of the coating will begin to deteriorate.
If the first attempt does not help, then you need to thoroughly rinse off the product and either change it to another, or repeat the operation after a certain period of time.

Dyeing your hair at home is very convenient and cost-effective. However, if you dye your hair at home, you risk staining your bathroom. You may not immediately notice drops of paint on the bathroom, but over time they will appear and will be difficult to remove. Acrylic bathtubs are easy to maintain, but sometimes the stains can be too stubborn. If this happens, then here is simple advice on how to deal with it.
What you will need

- dishwashing liquid
- Vinegar
- soft washcloth or cloth
- nail polish remover

On jeans
It is more difficult to wash paint stains on jeans: it is a rough but loose fabric that quickly absorbs dirt. In addition, it is almost always colorful and sheds easily. The following products will remove stains on denim:
Tips from Chistyuli will save your favorite jeans!
- Turpentine for old and difficult to remove stains. Moisten the paint generously with cotton wool soaked in turpentine. Once the dye is gone, wash your jeans.
- For white jeans. Prepare a homemade stain remover using this recipe: refined gasoline (kerosene) and chalk (kaolin) in a 1:1 ratio. Apply thickly to the dirt. After 15-20 minutes, brush the stain with a brush. Wash and rinse to remove chalk residue. Wash in a machine with aromatic conditioner (to remove the smell of gasoline, kerosene).
- Acetone (must be tested on an inconspicuous area). Soak a rag in acetone and apply to the stain. Leave for 15-20 minutes. Clean off any remaining paint. Do the laundry.
- We remove stubborn stains. Treat the contaminated area with warm glycerin. Gently rub it into the fabric. Apply 9% vinegar to the stain. Wash this area with soap. Then wash the entire item.
How to remove hair dye from an acrylic bath
After dyeing, I washed my hair in the bath, the dye seemed to be absorbed, what should I do?
The smooth surface of acrylic bathtubs or cast iron bathtubs with self-leveling acrylic is easily damaged by abrasive particles of cleaning products. Scratches appear into which hair dye, herbal infusions, rust, etc. penetrate.
Therefore, it is recommended to immediately rinse the bath after coloring your hair, and then rinse it using special mild cleansers. For example, with the “LUXUS professional” product. Apply it with a soft sponge, wait 10 minutes and rinse off from the shower head.
To prevent the appearance of paint marks, you can coat the dry bath in advance with something containing fat, at least vegetable oil, then the paint will not get into the scratches, and there will be less hassle.
the system chose this answer as the best
During painting, the paint should be washed off immediately. If something drips, you need to wash it off immediately, and quickly rinse off the water after rinsing. If the bathtub has already been painted, then it is better to use gel-like textures; hard abrasive ones can damage the surface, which will subsequently absorb dyes even more actively, turn yellow or darken. You can try Whiteness on stains, but be careful.
Many women are faced with the problem of how to clean the bathtub from drops of hair dye. As has already been written here, it is better to act, so to speak, in hot pursuit. Immediately after dyeing your hair, drops of dye can be washed off with plain water.
If some time has already passed, then you can use the following means: Silit, Adrilan, Pemolux. Of course, it is better to use liquid or cream cleaners, as powder can damage the surface of the bathtub.
Hair dye is very caustic, it is absorbed not only into the hair, changing color, but can also stain the bathroom. To avoid this, you must first wash it with a regular soap solution, but immediately. For example, Palmyra is an inexpensive and accessible product. If the paint does not come off, you will have to use special methods or look for traditional methods to clean the bathroom. These should be products without abrasive particles so as not to spoil the coating.
From folk remedies, you can try hydrogen peroxide or a combination of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. Bathroom surfaces are also washed with table vinegar or citric acid. Or you can try dry bleach. Cream of tartar with peroxide also works.
I also recommend “Komet” whitening with a whiteness effect (not an advertisement) - I really like this product, it suits me. I didn’t have to clean the bathroom with this product, although it should work.
And you can also find “Comets” for rust and plaque freely available: apply with a soap solution like thick “Palmyra”, hold, then rinse, many times in a row. In household There are many new products in stores.
I recently encountered the same problem myself. Usually, when I dye my hair, I immediately wash it off if the dye gets on the surface of the bath, but then I blinked and didn’t immediately notice that I had dripped it while applying the dye to my hair. Then she walked away for a few minutes.
And my bathtub is Acrylic, quite sensitive to many types of care products with chemical composition and disinfectant.
It was not possible to remove the stains with a soft sponge and water. I also tried liquid dishwashing detergent. The result is zero. And I used the powder. Contrary to the recommendations, I even tried white. Then I used the gel for washing dishes AOS and Fairy. The stains faded a little, but they were not completely removed. Mine don't pay attention, but I see it.
So from now on I will be very careful when dyeing my hair.
If not much time has passed since the contamination, then the paint can be easily washed off with a regular cleaning powder, such as Pemolux or ordinary soda. If you have an acrylic coating. then it is better not to use this kind of product, since it will scratch and therefore ruin the surface of the bathtub. In this case, it is better to use products in the form of a gel, for example “Sif”. A friend washes the surface of the bathtub with a solution of hydrogen peroxide, judging by her reviews, it helps well. You can also purchase special solutions in hardware stores that make it quite easy to remove paint stains. But again, before using them, it is better to try on a small area of the surface.
After dyeing my hair, if the dye itself drips into the bath, I immediately wash it all off with water, because then a stain that is difficult to remove may remain.
I would not recommend abrasive cleaning products for stains, for the bath, such as Pemolux.
But there is a cool thing called Adrilan (not to be confused with Adriel).
I poured it on, waited a little, wiped it and everything would be clean.
I would recommend using Whiteness with caution.
If during the process of dyeing your hair you accidentally stained or dropped dye on the bathtub, then you should not delay cleaning the bathtub. If you wash the stains right away, they will be easily washed off and not a trace will remain of them.
If stains remain on the surface for a long time, then you should use a detergent. For these purposes, a product like Fairy, Pemolux is suitable. You can use Whiteness, but carefully.
Stains from dark paint often remain on our bathtub, too, because my daughter dyes her hair “blue-black” or “deep black.” I always scrub with oxygen bleach (it's powdered and only takes a few grains) from Amway.
But I wouldn’t recommend Pemolux, because it damages the coating itself, and after using it for a long time, the bath will absorb everything.
I washed it with cleaning (or rather detergent) liquid dishwashing detergent.
Abrasive products should not be used, especially if we are talking about an acrylic bathtub; you will simply scratch it with cleaning powders.
It’s even better to wash off the dye immediately after dyeing your hair.
try going to a household chemicals store, they will help you. In my opinion, Pemolux is one of the solutions to the problem.

Removing pigment from furniture
Stains from cosmetic procedures can also remain on furniture. Cleaning is carried out similar to cleaning the floor. Use soda, nail polish remover, alcohol (various types), lemon juice, acid.
To clean with soda, take tsp. substances and pour water to form a slurry. It is applied to the contaminated surface for a period of 5 to 20 minutes. Then wash it off. If necessary, clean again. Vinegar is added to enhance the cleansing effect.
Cleaning leather surfaces
For a white coating, white is suitable. Simply wipe the contaminated surface. Special furniture care products are used for furniture made of eco-friendly leather and dermantine.
Attention: do not use chlorine-containing products on colored furniture surfaces.
Before using any of the products, it is recommended that you test first.
Is it possible?
Rinse off hair dye
Many representatives of the fair sex dye their hair at home. The inevitable question arises - where can I remove the dye from my hair? Of course, the most convenient way is to use the bathroom. But what if its snow-white coating turns the same color as your hair, or spots or streaks appear?
If the bathtub is new and its coating does not have cracks or scratches, nothing bad will happen; the paint will not have time to stick to the coating and will simply be washed off with water down the drain. The only thing is to make sure that the pressure at the time of rinsing is high, so that the pigment does not linger on the surface for a long time. After completing the procedure, you just need to rinse the bath well with warm water, carefully inspecting the surface for paint smudges.
But if the coating of the font is damaged and has roughness and scratches, the paint will get into the surface defects and remain there.
Therefore, it is very important to properly care for your plumbing and use high-quality detergents so as not to bring it to this state. But if you do scratch the acrylic, it’s okay, it can be easily restored .
Take salt and turpentine baths
After work, it is very useful to relax and take a hot bath with salt or turpentine. But housewives have a question: will acrylic withstand such a test.
The answer is simple - it will endure! But subject to certain conditions. In general, a solution of sea or any other salt does not chemically interact with such a coating, so you can safely use it for evening relaxation. There is one thing though! The surface can be damaged mechanically. Therefore, it is safer to dissolve the salt in some other container, and only then pour it into the font.
As for turpentine, it is an oil. It will also not damage the coating in any way. But to be on the safe side, it’s better to add it to an already filled bath. And after the procedure, rinse thoroughly with water.
Wash the animals
Many owners are accustomed to bathing their pets in the bathtub after a walk. But is it worth doing? The acrylic surface does not like mechanical influences very much, and if you regularly wash a dog or cat in the bath, they will definitely leave scratches with their claws . Therefore, it is better not to do this. You can buy a large plastic basin for such procedures.
Powder wash
The acrylic bathtub is washable . The only thing worth paying attention to is that the water is no more than 50 ºС and the metal parts of the clothes being washed do not damage the surface, so you do not need to rinse the jackets too zealously - the zippers will scratch the coating.
But you can only wash it in regular baths; you absolutely cannot do this in hydromassage baths ! There is a danger of damaging the injectors.
Store in frost
Often, due to the lightness of the material, and as a result, ease of transportation, acrylic bathtubs are purchased for summer cottages. But there is a myth that such fonts do not survive frosts well and are likely to return to “broken trough” in the summer. Is it so? If your dacha is located beyond the Arctic Circle, of course, problems may arise with frosts of -60 ºС, but if you live a little further south, there should be no problems, acrylic easily survives frosts down to -50 ºС.
Additional tips and tricks
- This method also works well for removing old paint stains, although it will take a little longer.
- WD-40 does not dry out, so for very stubborn stains, you can apply WD-40 liberally and leave it overnight. This should soften the paint and make it easier to remove.
- If paint cannot be removed with WD-40, solvent cleaning may be necessary. Study the label carefully or ask an employee at a hardware or building supply store to help you select a solvent for your paint that is safe to use on your plumbing fixtures.
- For latex paint stains, blot the stain with a cotton ball or rag soaked in alcohol. It will dissolve the paint and allow it to be removed.
Cleaning accessories
The main item is a foam sponge; soft rags and brushes with medium-hard bristles are also used. The drug is applied to the walls and bottom, then usually left to react, and these accessories are sufficient to remove the softened layer.
Individual drops of the solution (after repair) are removed with a spatula or knife; thick traces cannot be removed by chemical means. It is better to prevent such contamination.
There are two options for the development of events:
- if the substance has become embedded in the enamel, the drop will be removed along with it;
- if no reaction occurs, there is a chance to remove the layer without harm.
To protect your hands, wear rubber gloves; polyethylene gloves are not suitable, as they can come apart along the seams and the chemical will get on your hands. The eyes are protected with goggles, and the respiratory tract is protected with a respirator. You will need clothes that you don’t mind getting ruined if they come into contact with cleaning products.
What not to use to clean an enamel bathtub
Despite the resistance of the coating to many substances, it must be treated with care. It is not recommended to use products in the form of powders - as a result, the surface is injured and scratches are formed. Deposits are more likely to accumulate in uneven areas.
Drugs that contain the following substances have a detrimental effect on enamel:
- oxalic acid;
- alkali;
- hydrochloric acid;
- aldehydes.
Metal brushes and devices with hard bristles also scratch the surface, so such tools are not used for enamel.
Mild Whitening Cleaner
A characteristic feature of a mild cleaning product is a balanced combination of components such as cleaning solution, bleaching component and non-abrasive sand. It will allow you to get rid of almost any stain in the bathroom. Add some water and a small amount of cleaning product to the sponge. Now you can try to clean the stains that have become embedded in your bathtub or sink.
Remember to wear gloves when using any of the suggested methods.
