For many years now, this spectacular modern material, creating a stylish, original appearance, has not gone out of fashion, and its popularity is only increasing. A lightweight and functional analogue of genuine leather allowed designers to transform stereotypical brutality into elegance and grace. Although eco-leather clothing looks extraordinary compared to the rest of a woman’s wardrobe, in combination with other things it looks advantageous and harmonious. Such products will perfectly complement a casual outfit, a business ensemble, or a smart look for a special occasion.
Among the new items in the 2020/2021 winter collections are many styles of leather skirts, trousers and dresses in a wide range of trendy colors. It is not surprising, because in the cold season the most important advantage of eco-leather products comes to the fore - non-staining and ease of care, which is very important in the case of regular precipitation and bad weather. However, like any other material, when actively worn, eco-leather requires proper use, cleaning and storage. To prevent your favorite items from becoming deformed and to maintain their original neat appearance for as long as possible, today we will tell you about important rules for caring for clothes made from eco-leather.
Car care for eco-leather
- Eco-leather in the car interior requires periodic cleaning and application of a protective composition. It is better to gently clean the seats regularly than to wash off heavy dirt later.
- To clean the eco-leather interior, it is better to place the car in the shade so that the seats are not hot. On hot seats, the cleaning composition will evaporate before it has time to work.
- The first step is to vacuum the seats to get rid of large debris. It is better to vacuum with a soft brush attachment, which will help sweep away stuck debris.
- Then you can move on to washing.
- Eco-leather is waterproof, has microscopic pores that allow only air and steam to pass through, so all dirt, in most cases, remains on the surface and is not absorbed.
Instructions
There are three methods for cleaning leatherette items. It can be hand and machine washable. For delicate items, dry clean only. Some durable materials can be treated with chemicals when dry cleaning. Traditional methods can also be used.
Manual processing of artificial leather
With this method, you must follow the instructions:
Take a large basin and pour warm water into it. Its temperature should be a maximum of 30C.- Pour 50 ml of liquid soap into a basin.
It is recommended to use a glycerin-based product. You can also use dishwashing detergent. Only liquid and non-aggressive products should be used. - Add a large spoonful of vinegar to the basin to make the eco-leather soft and more effectively remove stains from its surface.
- Wipe the product thoroughly with a soft sponge. Do not wrinkle leatherette.
- Drain the water. Pour water into the basin at the same temperature as during the washing process. Rinse the product in it. You need to do this 2-3 times, changing the water each time.
- After washing, do not wring out eco-leather. This causes it to become deformed and stretched. After rinsing, hang it on a hanger to allow the water to drain.
It is forbidden to soak leatherette products. Prolonged exposure to water may cause the material to stretch or shrink.
Using a washing machine
With this method, you must follow the instructions:
- Place the product in the drum. Pour the product into the powder receptacle. It is recommended to use liquid detergents designed for washing delicate fabrics. You can use gels to wash items made of wool and silk. Bleach and products containing chlorine are prohibited.
- Set to delicate wash mode. Eco-leather can be washed by hand washing. The water temperature in all cases should not exceed 30C.
- Disable spin and dry modes.
The optimal time for washing leatherette is 30 minutes.
Dry and wet cleaning
With this processing method, both household chemicals and folk remedies can be used.
Household chemicals
The best options are:
- "Turtle Wax" in the form of thick foam;
- "Fill Inn" in aerosol form;
- "Runway" in the form of a foam solvent.
All of these funds are used according to the same scheme. The product is sprayed onto a leatherette product and wiped off with a foam sponge after 5 minutes.
Traditional methods
You can wipe a leatherette item with an alcohol solution . It is enough to apply it on a cotton pad and treat the most contaminated areas of the product with it: the collar and cuffs.
If there are stains on your clothes, you need to treat them with lemon juice. It is also used to remove grease stains from clothes.
A water-vinegar solution can be used to remove coffee, wine and tea stains. It is enough to mix half a glass of warm water and one large spoon of vinegar. You need to dip a cotton swab in the resulting solution and treat the leatherette product with it.
Washing perforated eco-leather
- You can also use damp microfiber to wash perforated leather.
Using a circular motion, the brush will thoroughly clean the perforated skin.
- For more severe contamination, use a store-bought or homemade cleaning composition with a soft-bristled brush.
- Spray the product onto the brush, not directly onto the seat.
- Gently work the skin in a circular motion. Walk this way over the entire surface.
- While the product is still wet, dry it with a microfiber towel. This wet residue will contain all the dirt that was lifted from the surface by the brush and product. The process can be repeated until the desired result is obtained.
- When wiping, use the clean side of a microfiber towel.
- Microfiber should be rinsed and wrung out periodically.
- If moisture or debris gets into the holes of the perforated leather, you can vacuum the holes with a narrow nozzle.
How to dry and smooth
After washing, let the clothes drain, straightening them out and hanging them over some container. Twisting and wringing can cause the leatherette to become deformed, which will then be difficult to smooth out. Pants should be rolled up and wrapped in soft fabric, such as a terry towel. Some of the water will be absorbed, and the rest will evaporate.
A leatherette item can be ironed out without an iron. To do this, turn the pants inside out and hang them on hangers. Lightly moisten the wrong side with water and smooth it with your hands, straightening out creases and folds. If you add glycerin to the water, the leatherette will become more pliable and easier to smooth out.
Then let the trousers dry without using a hair dryer or other heating device. Turn dry clothes right side out. It is advisable to carry out the entire procedure on a mannequin, if available. You can similarly straighten a jacket, bag, backpack, dress and other items.
If there are no options other than an iron, then it is recommended:
- Ironing should be done from the reverse side or through gauze or other thin fabric.
- Reduce the temperature to minimum, turn off the steam function.
- If a leatherette item does not smooth out, apply steam from a distance and continue ironing.
The most difficult part of a dermantine jacket is the sleeves. They should be filled with a roll of towel, and then ironed on all sides with a warm iron.
Washing rules
Not all stains can be removed with a wet cloth. Also, many products, for example, winter jackets and demi-season coats, sundresses, sweaters and pants, are made from various materials or decorated with small inserts. In this case, many people wonder whether it is possible to wash the item in a machine.
Variety of colors
Whether washing is allowed or not is indicated on the label and nowhere else. Washing is allowed at 40 degrees, with liquid powders. Drying should be in a horizontal position. If eco-leather with foam rubber, then washing is prohibited.

Table vinegar (1 tbsp/glass of water) or medical alcohol (1:1 dilution in water) can cope with small stains. Laundry soap will help remove milk and coffee stains from eco-leather.

Washing leather in a washing machine
Considering that the skin is sensitive to prolonged exposure to moisture and mechanical stress, you should be careful when using washing machines.
If the label does not prohibit this procedure, then perform it in the following order:
- Set the gentle mode to the “delicate fabrics” indicator.
- Select the “no spin” program with a temperature of 30˚C. The number of revolutions should not exceed 300.
- The product is inspected. If marks of dirt and dust are found, remove them with a soft rag soaked in liquid soap.
- The jacket or skirt is turned inside out, removing the decorative parts that can be removed beforehand. Place the item in the drum. To ensure uniformity of the process, it is recommended to additionally put a single-color piece of fabric that matches the shade.
- Pour liquid detergent without aggressive or bleaching components into the compartment.
If you need to wash a leather backpack, it must first be thoroughly cleaned from the inside. Shake out all the debris from the pockets, wipe the surfaces from dust. The rigid gasket at the bottom is removed. If possible, remove carabiners and belts. Oil marks are cleaned in advance using a stain remover suitable for the leather.
It is necessary to eliminate stains if the leather sofa has been wet cleaned. Whitish marks remain on the products after washing.
It is necessary to soak a piece of soft rag with clean water and moisten the mark over the entire area, extending slightly beyond the perimeter. Detergent compositions are not used. Place a paper towel on top to absorb moisture. Leave until completely dry.
Natural and artificial leather easily absorb foreign odors. It is often impractical to wash such products, so other methods are used to get rid of the common sweat odor:
- Squeeze the juice from half a lemon. Dilute it in a 3:1 ratio with water. Spray with a spray bottle onto the reverse side of the product and dry it unfolded.
- Pour hot water into a small enamel basin - 5 liters. Add vinegar essence with a concentration of 70% - 50 ml, carefully while stirring. The leather jacket should be hung so that the steam penetrates the problem area, saturating the fabric. After the water has cooled, the product is left to dry. You can wipe the gasket with a sponge, which is soaked first in a soap solution and then with clean water. You need to be careful not to wet your skin.
To restore the decorative appearance of leather products after washing and restore their shine, their surfaces are treated using available substances:
- wipe with a cotton pad soaked in lemon juice;
- use a colorless cream intended for shoes for white or leather items dyed in various shades;
- remove the peel from the orange and treat all tarnished areas with its inner side;
- Use castor oil to apply to leather items.
The skin is wiped with a sponge soaked in lemon juice.
A good option is the grounds of natural coffee. It is placed in a double gauze napkin and the surface is wiped thoroughly.
It is possible to disguise areas with peeling skin using special paint. Before applying it, the surfaces are degreased. If necessary, apply several layers, allowing the previous one to dry for an hour.
