Balls for washing and drying clothes: varieties, principles of operation and applications + manufacturer ratings

Some buyers are stopped from purchasing a down jacket by special washing rules. Such clothes, especially light ones, usually get dirty on the collars, pockets, sleeves, and near the zipper. To completely get rid of stains, special balls for washing down jackets are placed in the washing machine tank.

They have a mechanical effect on the product, removing old dirt and preventing the insulation from crumpling.

Types of balls

In modern hardware stores you can find various washing devices. The best option is spiked PVC balls, similar to children's toys. They perfectly beat off a down jacket, making washing more efficient. They are thrown directly into the tank, on top of the product. The balls spin together with the item and the washing powder, resulting in a “massage”. Even hand washing does not give such a flawless result.

Let's list the advantages of washing balls:

  • increase washing efficiency;
  • do not allow the insulation to be damaged;
  • help prevent rolling

When cleaning clothes from dirt, you can use the following types of balls:

  • Tennis. If there are no washing balls on sale, it’s not a big deal. You can purchase tennis balls at any sports store, bleach them and wash them with hot water. Then they are suitable for washing jackets. The balls are just as effective as the factory ones. Before use, you need to make sure that they are not painted, so as not to spoil the jacket.
  • Magnetic. Suitable for all types of products. They have a “massage” principle. Magnetic fields soften water and make it better quality, which is confirmed by researchers. These balls prevent the formation of pellets, perfectly remove dirt and enhance the effect of washing powder.

There are several well-known brands of magnetic balls. “Aquamag”, made in China, prevents scale from forming on the heater. There are no allergies from them, so you can use the balls to clean things and remove odors.

“White Cat” is produced in Germany and is produced in sets of 12 pieces. The magnets are protected by a rubber shell and have an unlimited shelf life. The balls remove scale and dirt from fabric fibers. One little thing is enough to soften water.

  • Tourmaline. The general principle of their action is this: they contribute to the creation of an environment in water that is caused by detergents. Alkali and free ions appear there, and acidity increases.

The balls consist of mineral compounds placed in a spherical plastic housing with holes. They fight harmful bacteria and mold. According to manufacturers, tourmaline balls can replace washing powder. This will improve the environment and human health. They can last up to two to three years.

The only disadvantage of such products is their high cost. But when using them, you do not need to purchase detergent. The balls are suitable for washing not only down jackets, but also socks, jeans, shirts, and overalls.

Before use, the accessory must be exposed to the sun to receive a charge, and after washing, it must be dried thoroughly.

  • PVC balls. They look like plastic balls with large rounded spikes. They are used when washing various wardrobe items. Such accessories make things soft, prevent pilling, and make rinsing easier. They are thrown into the drum along with the clothes. By rotating between wet products, the balls separate them, which causes free air circulation. This option is the safest for down jacket filling.

Don't worry that the balls can harm your clothes. Locks and zippers are much more dangerous for things. Instead of special balls, you can roll up foil and add it to the machine so that the products do not become magnetic and their color becomes brighter. But opinions differ on this matter. Some experienced housewives prefer aluminum foil balls, while others believe that this material scratches the drum and makes it unusable.

Rules for caring for a down jacket

Before putting it in the washing machine, the down jacket must be turned inside out.

Attention! Don't forget to turn out the sleeves too!

Be sure to fasten the “inverted” down jacket with a zipper. This way we better protect the front side of the down jacket and protect each external seam from damage. In addition, a fastened zipper is less susceptible to deformation and prevents the appearance of “waves” on the down jacket.

In order for washing to end in complete victory over dirt the first time, you also need to be able to prepare a down jacket.

Washing powder is not for down jackets! The peculiarity of this warm clothing is that its filler works like a sieve - it allows water to pass through, but retains grains. Particles of even very high-quality powder will forever be “registered” inside your down jacket.

We use only liquid detergent for delicate washing. It is easy to rinse without leaving marks in the filler or on the fabric.

Before washing the down jacket, you need to inspect it for dirt. Old, greasy marks from wear may not be removed during one cycle in the washing machine.

We put several laundry balls in the washing machine. Two pieces are enough for a jacket. For larger coats, it is better to take three or four balls.

Maximum washing temperature 30 degrees. At least three rinse cycles are recommended.

You should not soak down jackets before washing them in an automatic washing machine.

If you have to hand wash your down jacket, pay special attention to rinsing the item. Change the water until you feel the soap is completely gone. If you ignore this advice, you may end up with unsightly white streaks on your down jacket, especially noticeable on clothes of dark colors.

Advice. Never wash down jackets with other things, so as not to waste time pulling feathers out of the affected “wash neighbors”.

How are tennis balls different from washing balls?

Before using these attributes, you need to prepare them:

  • soak or boil in boiling water;
  • boil, adding stain remover, bleach and powder to remove paint

Tennis balls will be ready to use in the machine if they are thoroughly rinsed.

When washing, the balls make noise so much that the washing machine moves. This should not worry the owner, since neither the equipment nor the drum will be damaged.

These balls do not have spikes, like special ones, so they are thrown into the drum in larger quantities: 6 or 8 pieces.

How many pieces does it take to wash a jacket?

The effectiveness of washing largely depends on the uniform impact on the surface of the clothing, so you should use at least 4 balls at a time. Operating experience has proven that the best results are obtained by distributing the balls inside the jacket pockets and sleeves.

For balls with magnets and tourmaline balls, this number can increase to 6 pieces.

The compact arrangement of the down jacket inside the drum of the washing machine is of great importance for high-quality washing. A neatly folded item is better “beaten” by balls when washed, as a result of which the filler is evenly distributed and dries faster.

Another point concerns the dimensions of the balls; the smaller the weight and size of the ball, the greater the number of them needed to achieve maximum effect.

Attention! Reusable use of laundry balls for a long time fully pays for the funds spent on their purchase, and is also much more economical compared to dry cleaning services.

How do the balls work?

Placed in the machine along with a down jacket, the balls hit the drum and bounce off, fluffing up the filler, thereby increasing washing efficiency.

When rinsing, washing balls help to completely remove the powder, so there are no streaks left on the material. As a result, with the help of a simple device you can cope with three tasks at once.

How many balls are needed? Experienced housewives advise using them in the amount of 4 pieces. These are not disposable devices, but designed for long-term use. So the costs soon pay off.

Why do you use laundry balls?

Special laundry balls help to wash clothes better and extend their useful life.

Laundry balls can perform the following functions:

  • Replacing detergent;
  • Break down lint in outerwear, blankets, pillows;
  • Promotes better rinsing of the detergent;
  • Helps remove contaminants;
  • Removing pellets;
  • Fabric softening.

It is worth noting that this additional element for washing does not cause allergies and saves detergents.

How to wash down jackets correctly?

By following these tips, you can preserve the appearance of the product for a long time and extend its service life:

  1. Down jackets can only be washed with liquid detergents. It is desirable that they be special for down jackets.
  2. The water temperature should not exceed 30 degrees.
  3. It is advisable to use a delicate wash cycle.
  4. Before washing, close all zippers and other fasteners.
  5. You need to look to see if there is a “no washing” sign on the items. If available, only dry cleaning is suitable.
  6. The down jacket is wrung out only at low speeds.
  7. It is advisable to use tennis balls or special balls.

How to use them correctly

The general rule for all types of store-bought balls is not to use them at temperatures above 50 degrees. Any material, rubber or plastic, suffers and breaks down at high temperatures.

After use, washing balls must be dried, and tourmaline balls must be kept in the sun.

If you wash clothes with tennis balls, you can even restore items that were previously washed incorrectly and led to deformation of the entire jacket.

As for the number of washing balls, you can navigate by the weight of the items being washed. The heavier the items loaded into the machine, the more balls you need. For standard washing, a couple of hedgehog balls or tourmaline “rattles” are enough. When washing heavier, bulkier items, four balls will work better than two.

The range of washing balls is huge, and all varieties work approximately equally effectively.

How to dry a down jacket?

Even if all recommendations are followed, the product will still lose its external volume because the filler will get wet. To bring your jacket back to its original condition, you need to dry it properly:

  • do not put it in a horizontal position, because in the absence of ventilation an unpleasant odor will appear and the down jacket will not dry for a long time;
  • hang the product on hangers in a ventilated place;
  • periodically shake the item and turn out the sleeves;
  • speed up drying with a vacuum cleaner or hairdryer

Hello! I ordered a magnetic ball but didn’t really believe in the results. After a few washes, I opened the machine’s output filter and scale actually began to accumulate. I recommend to all

Good evening! I bought the ball recently, but I can already see the results! Save on powder, fabric softener is not needed, things are already soft! I monitored the drainage, around the 5th wash (the machine is 3 years old) and it actually came out with a fair amount of scale and powder residue. I am very pleased with the purchase, there is a result, for those who are hesitant to buy and are still deciding whether to take it or not, my advice is take it, you won’t regret it!

I've been using the ball for several years now. I'm very pleased. The machine works like a clock, saved a lot of money on powder, and completely forgot about calgon. Today I ordered a ball for a friend.

Successful purchase

Advantages:

easy to use, multifunctional

Flaws:

for me they just don't exist

Review:

Recently my husband gave me a very unusual laundry ball as a gift. It is unusual in that it is magnetic, thanks to this it helps to save energy, very little washing powder is required for washing, and besides, it perfectly disinfects things and prevents the appearance of an unpleasant odor and scale in the machine.

In the summer I do laundry much more often, you understand, the child is small, after a walk all things can be washed.

At first I thought that the ball was not helping at all, but it turned out to be completely wrong.

Things smell nice, the color remains the same, things don’t fade at all. The unpleasant smell from the washing machine has disappeared.

I think this is a great gift. The ball is not expensive, around 1000 rubles, and the savings from its use are much greater.

I personally completely abandoned all cleaners and softeners. I believe that the ECO LIFE magnetic ball fully lives up to the expectations placed on it. The consumption of powder has become less, so the savings are obvious. It is more difficult to measure electricity consumption, since I usually do laundry 2-3 times a month. We don’t even remove the ball after washing, but after several cycles my husband looks into the filter and cleans it. He says that the scale has almost completely disappeared. Thanks to this wonderful device!

After ordering the product, the parcel was delivered within 2 days. 3 months have passed since then. Indeed, I began to add 10-20% less powder. This did not negatively affect the quality of washing. On the contrary, I take any things out of the drum softer and more tender. I hope that in the future I will get the same pleasure from every wash with a magnetic ball.

I bought a magnetic ball through a joint purchase on the Internet. The purpose of the purchase is to protect the new washing machine. I thought that this method was cheaper than constantly using Calgon. Does the ball work? Yes it works, but I can’t say how effective it is. As for scale, it’s difficult to check. But the towels, which were like sandpaper, became very soft. Apparently the water becomes soft, washing goes better. In addition, the ball allows you to save a little on powder.

Advantages:

Gets rid of scale

Flaws:

I don't see it yet

My old beko machine, of course, promised to serve me for a long time, but I understand that we must respect any object that serves us. I’ll be honest, I washed it for 5 years and didn’t think about scale if it weren’t for advertising on TV and then articles on the Internet. In general, I thought about it and decided to help my machine get rid of scale, which seemed to me to have already clogged my heating element and drum. I ordered a magnetic ball through a joint shopping site and have been using it for three years now. It seems to me that it picks up clothes perfectly and the drum looks cleaner) It also saves washing powder, as the manufacturers promise, by 15-20%. It doesn’t make any noise when washing, probably the laundry softens the noise.

Advantages:

laundry is actually softer after washing

Flaws:

high price, suspicious packaging

I came across this miracle - a ball in a group of joint purchases in our city, read rave reviews from buyers about the ball and decided to buy, the price is not the cheapest - 380 rubles with delivery, but the ball was ordered. And this is why it is a miracle ball (judging by the description): - protects against scale and ensures the longevity of the washing machine. The high efficiency of the Ball is achieved due to repeated and prolonged exposure to a magnetic field throughout the entire wash cycle; — saves washing powder without compromising the quality of washing (the instructions say to reduce the dose of powder); — does not require additional water softeners and fabric softeners; — service life of at least 5 years, the magnetic field does not decrease over time; - improves the quality of washing - due to the neutralization of hardness salts and a decrease in the surface tension of water under the influence of a magnetic field; - can be used in dishwashers. By the time my order arrived, our washing machine had broken down, we bought a new one and I couldn’t check how well the ball descales, but judging by the photos posted in our group of joint purchases, it really does it well. The description says that the ball saves washing powder. Indeed, now I use much less of it, I haven’t noticed a deterioration in the quality of the washed laundry, but I have noticed that the laundry, even without conditioner, actually comes out very soft. I think it really helps. There were 2 things that confused me about this ball. Firstly, some strange thin plastic packaging for a ball made in Austria, which is where it was made, but there is no barcode or address on the package, only on the instructions included in the package. Secondly, in the instructions the release date of this ball is printed as 08/15/2013, as you understand, I am writing this review only on 08/09/2013. As for the rest, there’s nothing to complain about yet. It’s up to you to decide whether to take it or not, I took it and don’t regret it; I don’t use fabric softener anymore. this is what a friend of mine comes out of after washing with a ball

Advantages:

Inexpensive. Helps against scale!

Flaws:

If your expectations are too high, you may be disappointed at first!

Hi all. I can say right away that the Eco Life magnetic ball is the case when you don’t expect a special effect, but it manifests itself over time. Personally, I bought this ball on occasion, from a work colleague, and gave it 120 hryvnia (4.5 years ago). You could say it's inexpensive. In addition, they hoped that it would help at least a little against scale. And it so happened that not long before this, my wife and I bought a new washing machine. It’s just that our water is hard, about 7 mEq/liter (in the old machine, the heating element was changed regularly, 2 times in 10 years of operation). Frankly speaking, we didn’t have much hope. Although the advertisement promised a very decent assortment of various “advantages,” the operating principle was too suspiciously mysterious—a magnetic field. It's just some kind of fantasy. At first, I had a very vague idea of how such a purchase could cope with scale. The ball looks quite nice, a little soft, and quite heavy, probably due to its magnets. There are 4 of them inside. (As far as I understand, other laundry balls have a maximum of 2 magnets, and they do not have such efficiency). There were no problems using the magnetic ball. Everything is absolutely simple - you put it in the drum, along with the laundry. You can reduce the amount of washing powder and the washing temperature. Although in general this is not necessary. As for its performance. Firstly, a decent service life. The manufacturer promises more than 10 years of operation, and most likely this is true. As you can see from the photo, the ball has not suffered any damage over the years of operation :), it looks like new. The advertisement says: “Visibly softens laundry and improves the quality of washing.” This is my opinion here. If you have an expensive high-quality powder, plus a fabric softener, then you won’t really notice the difference with or without a ball! Personally, I use the most common domestic powder, and I don’t use a softener at all. Therefore, my wife and I immediately saw the positive effect of the ball. Although, of course, it is not as accentuated as we would like. I liked that thanks to this device, we began to save washing powder and electricity. I think if you count on 1 wash, then in terms of money it is insignificant. Well, if you count it per 1000, then it’s more or less significant. And finally, the main advantage is protection against scale, which is why this ball was purchased. 4.5 years have already passed since the purchase, and the machine itself is 6 years old. It is quite possible to draw conclusions. And of course, I was curious whether I bought this ball in vain or not. I decided to get a heating element, it’s not such a big problem. And this is what this heating element is like, in all its glory, see the photo. On the first one, I immediately pulled it out (I only removed a few threads that were stuck). I rinsed it under the tap and lo and behold, it even shines! Of course it’s not like new, there are still spots of scale. But, for a 6-year-old washing machine, with our water, this is an excellent result! Heaven and earth, compared to those heating elements that were taken out of the old machine when there was no magnetic ball. This result, of course, pleased me. Now I am calm, the machine does not face problems from scale. Ask if I'm happy with my purchase? Definitely “Yes”. It does its main job, protecting against scale, conscientiously. And most importantly, for a minimum of money and effort. As for the other positive aspects, they exist, but the advertising certainly exaggerates. As they say, that's what advertising is for. But if you don’t expect a miracle from the Ecolife ball, it definitely won’t disappoint you! PS I foresee a question from many - what about citric acid, don’t you really use it? My opinion is that acid may do more harm than good. I very much doubt that “washing machines” use acid-resistant rubber... Or the contacts may oxidize due to the fumes, and as a result something will fail electrically... Therefore, no, except perhaps for the kettle, I have never used lemonade and do not plan to.

My review today is about the Eco Life magnetic ball. I bought it at SP.

This is a magnetic water treatment device that fights scale in washing machines. I've been using a magnetic ball for about 1.5 years now. Before him, for 4 years, the task of protecting against scale was performed by the “magnetic water softener Calblock” produced by Indesit, Italy. Therefore, I think it would be appropriate to compare these two devices in this review.

I'll start with the purpose. I will quote from the instructions for the Indesit softener:

The magnetic field transforms scale into aragonite crystals, which are easily washed away by a stream of water and do not form deposits. Prevents the formation of scale on the internal parts of the machine. Suitable for both washing machines and dishwashers. Softens water: you can avoid the constant use of anti-scale agents. Saves detergent: softer water requires less detergent. Saves energy consumption: lime does not settle on internal parts. The water heats up faster.

Very similar in meaning and description of the operation of the magnetic ball from Eco Life, so I will not repeat it.

Now about efficiency

how they actually work, whether they fulfill their task.

I feel like the magnetic ball is a little more effective than the Calblock. I am completely satisfied with the quality of the wash, despite the fact that I throw in a little less powder than before. And the linen is now softer, this is also noticeable.

What is the disadvantage of a magnetic ball?

  • is that you can hear it knocking inside the drum. My opinion is that although this may be concerning, it is nothing to worry about. It’s just that the design of the drum in a washing machine is similar to an empty barrel, so the knocking sound is clearly audible if you don’t load enough laundry. And when the loading is normal, it is almost inaudible.

The magnetic ball definitely wins over Calblock in the financial aspect of the issue. The ball is 3 times cheaper and lasts 3 times longer . Calblock has small holes inside that become clogged and impossible to clean. A magnetic ball lasts at least 10 years, and according to reviews from those who have been using it for a long time, this is indeed true.

I will note another advantage of the ball - it reduces the imbalance during spin cycles in the washing machine, because when the drum rotates, it rolls to the place where there is the least amount of laundry (as they write about this on the seller’s website). Of course, this influence is small, the weight of the ball is only 65 grams, but with the ball I no longer noticed much vibration during the spin cycle.

Regarding scale

  • It’s quite difficult to look inside the machine, so I can’t say for sure.
    Although the fact that my washing machine is already many years old, and it still works without breakdowns, I consider the merit of these two magnetic anti-scale protection devices. I see a lot of reviews from other people who have been using the ball for a long time, where people write that there is no scale.

Overall, I like the Eco Life magnetic ball and am happy with the purchase. The money is small, it lasts a very long time, it does its job. I just put it in the drum with laundry, and the scale problem no longer bothers me.

I’ve been using the magnetic ball not long ago, for the 3rd month, but I’m already impressed, so I decided to write my review. Well, first of all, I completely agree with the other reviews, and the laundry has become softer and more pleasant, and the wash is better. Plus, I conducted an experiment on how to fight a ball against scale. And more about this. The drain hose of the (not new, unfortunately) machine was temporarily attached to the bathroom. And after several washes I observed what was happening there. And absolutely nothing happened. My husband has already started teasing me, saying it’s all a scam. And then, after the next (5th or 6th, I can’t say for sure) wash, I looked into the bathtub, and there... I was even scared, the whole bathtub was gray, covered in pieces of scale. At first I really thought that the dirt had come from somewhere, but then I called my husband, he confirmed that yes, it was scale, and took a photo “as a keepsake.” And then the scale continued to appear for a long time, probably 10 washes, until the machine was cleaned. Now I can confidently say that this device really works. So, considering all the positive aspects for washing, as well as the successful fight against scale, I recommend a magnetic ball to everyone! PS In the photo on the right side, a little bathtub is visible in the background. Partially gives an idea of how much scale has fallen out during just one wash.

I bought this ball in joint purchases. I had long heard about the properties of a magnetic field, but didn’t know where to apply it. And here you have it: another super offer, which I couldn’t do without. This ball was inexpensive: 350 Russian rubles. Therefore, it was not a pity to spend such money on the experiment. And then he came. Long awaited! It looks like a rubber ball with holes. I immediately ran to check its magnetic properties)) The fork was magnetic) It is written in the instructions that the optimal temperature for the operation of this ball is 40-60 degrees. I reduced the amount of powder by eye (I used it as for soft water), and lowered the temperature to 60 degrees for washing cotton fabrics. What can I say: the washing time was reduced by 10 minutes from 1:57 according to the program, the washing time was about 1:45. After the first wash, the filter (the thing located at the bottom of the washer) produced pebbles of either limescale, or washing powder deposited on the heating element, or all of this together. I'm happy with the result! Don't be afraid to buy and try! Save on calgons! The service life of the ball is limited by rubber wear! and on average is 10 years! Now calculate the benefits! P.S. When washing, you can feel it, especially during the spin cycle, like a ball hitting the drum. The sound is not critical! And it doesn’t harm the drum! I always put the ball in the middle of the drum and sometimes you can’t hear it at all!

I found this miracle in the joint venture. I just bought a new washing machine, so I wanted to protect it from scale. And this is a real way! And it turns out cheaper than buying Calgon and the efficiency is higher! You can read about this on the official website. link

The magnetic ball itself is covered with soft rubber, there are 4 magnets inside - as I understand it, they create a magnetic field, softening the water. Saving on washing powder and electricity. Its service life is approximately 10 years (until the rubber wears off). I can’t say anything about cleaning the scale yet (I plan to conduct an experiment on my mother’s washing machine, and then I’ll add to the review). But it definitely softens the water! I washed the towels - they are soft! Otherwise they always stood in “cakes” like sandpaper... PHOTO WITH A HAND TO REPRESENT THE SIZE OF THE BALL. Its weight is about 80 grams. There is not much knocking on the drum of the machine, even during the spin cycle. And if there is a lot of laundry, you can’t hear it at all.

Reviews

"Good afternoon! I washed my down jacket using tennis balls and detergent for knitwear and wool. Before this, I repeatedly used simple powder without balls, and ended up with a summer jacket instead of a winter one: the fluff all rolled into clumps and sank to the bottom. What's more important here: the balls or the product? I have to wash a few more down jackets, and I want the filling to be in its place, even if things become less bulky” (Marina);

“When I took the down jacket out of the machine, I was scared at first. But in the end everything turned out great. You just need to take out the jacket and immediately put it on the hanger. Let it dry completely, and then work with your hands. Every fluff ball needs to be straightened out. Then place the down jacket on your knees and tap each square. All that remains is to let things hang” (Igor);

“We must not forget that down feathers have a covering layer that protects from heat and water. Such things should be washed only with special liquids specifically for down, so that the protective layer does not wash off and the material does not stick together. Balls improve the quality of washing and prevent lumps from forming. But tennis balls do not completely replace washing devices” (Vitaly)

Price

The price of special washing balls is approximately 65 rubles per piece. A set of 4 devices costs from 260 rubles. It's not that expensive, but not available to every housewife. Those who want to save money take packs of tennis balls of 3 pieces at a price of 100-120 rubles.

A bigger savings is to buy tourmaline balls at a cost of 500-600 rubles and give up the powder.

Down jacket washing balls bring real benefits. With their help, you can not only remove dirt from your jacket, but also reduce time and money costs. But before washing, you must take a closer look at the labels on the product and understand whether the item can be washed and whether the feathers are coming out of it. If prohibited, machine washing using balls is not possible.

How to replace laundry balls

In some situations, you can replace special laundry balls with more readily available items:

  • Silicone balls from children's toys;
  • A small ball of thread, you just need to place it in a sock;
  • Walnuts in shell;
  • Tennis balls;
  • DIY foil balls.

It is recommended not to replace it with more readily available elements on an ongoing basis, since this is not always reliable and brings the expected effect.
