A fur collar is a stylish detail for down jackets and winter jackets. It warms perfectly in the cold season. It must be cleaned and washed regularly, since dirt has a bad effect on the condition of the product.
We have prepared recommendations for proper washing of a fur collar. By adhering to them, you will preserve the original appearance of the product for a long time.
Tips for caring for fur products
If you notice a stain on your collar, it is better to remove it immediately - this will make it easier to get rid of the stain. Old stains are difficult to remove and require more aggressive methods.
During the off-season, the collar should be stored in a special case. Do not roll it, otherwise you will not be able to straighten it later and the product will be damaged.
Before washing, remove any dust from the item and comb it carefully. Clean the fur using a vacuum cleaner. Check the manufacturer's collar tag for information. It indicates the permitted washing mode and maximum temperature.
The product cannot be ironed or dried with hot air - this will ruin the fur and deform it. For this reason, it is forbidden to place the collar in direct sunlight or near heating devices. While drying, straighten the pile from time to time by shaking the collar. If you need to dry the product quickly, use a hairdryer with a cold air function, directing its stream along the lint.
Wash by hand
You need to resort to this option if the item has a long pile - the fur can get tangled in the machine so much that it will be difficult to comb it. To prevent this from happening, you need to dip the product into the basin in one direction, holding it by the shoulders. The pile lies in the direction from top to bottom, so when you immerse it in water, the fur will straighten out to the sides, and when you lift it out of the water, it will lie back in the right direction.
First, soak the product in soapy water and squeeze it in dirty areas. Next, rinse the item in warm water for the first time, and in cold water for the second time, this will restore the shine to the fur. You can also add a little vinegar to the second rinse, so the pile will become smoother.
How to wash a faux fur collar
There is nothing difficult in cleaning such a collar:
- Detach the collar from the jacket and place it in the machine;
- Select the delicate wash option and the water temperature at 40 °C;
- Add gel to the compartment;
- Place the collar on a horizontal surface and wait until it dries.
The water should drain naturally - you should not squeeze the collar. You can wrap it in a terry towel, which will absorb all the excess moisture.
It is not recommended to use regular powder. Its granules will clog between the villi and, after drying, lead to the appearance of an unsightly plaque. The pile will look dull. Even repeated rinsing will not completely remove the powder.
You can wash the collar yourself. Before washing, soak the collar for 30-60 minutes by adding detergent to the water. The water should be warm. Under no circumstances rub the collar with force - the actions must be careful.
Attention! If you add a small amount of table vinegar to the water, the fur will become shiny.
To return a white collar to its snow-white color, use hydrogen peroxide. Mix peroxide and water in equal proportions, spray the mixture on the collar, wait until it dries and remove any remaining product with a clean, dry cloth.
You can also stir 1 tsp. alcohol, 3 tsp. soda and a little water. Take a suede brush and work it through the collar.
Drying
The drying method also depends on whether the product is natural or artificial. This is a very important point, so it is necessary to consider the features of drying of each type.
One of the main factors to consider when drying real and faux fur is position. Thus, natural material can only be dried in a horizontal position, immediately securing it to the down jacket. Once it dries, it will be almost impossible to give the correct shape. Although faux furs can be dried in any position, there are some rules.
- Fur of any type should never be dried near heaters or radiators. A cool, shaded location is best.
- Try to prevent moisture from getting from the collar onto the down jacket itself. Because of this, stains may remain on the down jacket, and you will have to wash the down jacket as well.
- Before you start drying the product, you cannot wring it out or twist it. To remove water from the product, simply leave it hanging for a few minutes. To remove the main moisture, some people use wrapping the collar in cotton fabric.
- Remember that spinning will lead to creases in the fibers, which will not straighten out in the future.
- When the fur gradually dries out, you must not forget to shake it periodically.
- Comb the collar with a comb. It is important that the teeth are located at a large distance from each other. Combing direction is against hair growth.
This way you can wash the collar and dry it.
How to wash a collar made of natural fur
For such a collar, only dry cleaning is suitable - wet cleaning will damage the product and deform it. We recommend contacting a dry cleaner: specialists know how not to harm such products.
When you don't have this option, use the following methods:
- Hydrogen peroxide
. Moisten a cotton pad with it and wipe the fur along the pile. Change the disk and repeat the procedure again until the dust and dirt disappear;
- Hot fine sand.
Use the oven to heat. Apply sand to the surface of the product and remove it. The procedure will likely need to be repeated;
- Potato starch.
Sprinkle it on your collar and then spray a small amount of shampoo diluted in water. However, the fur should not be wet. Once the starch begins to resemble dough, remove it using a soft brush;
- Flour.
Pour the flour into a large container, then lower the collar into it. Clean the product carefully and then shake it to remove any remaining flour. Vacuum the collar and comb it.
If all else fails, try wet cleaning. You need a suede shoe brush and warm water. Rinse the brush thoroughly and then clean the collar with it. Repeat the procedure up to 3 times. Next, carefully comb the collar and leave it to dry.
Wet hand washing is permissible only in extreme cases, when the dirt on the fur collar is too significant. In order not to spoil the product, use a hair or fur care product - it will remove excess fat along with dirt. A product for bathing pets shows good results.
Also, washing depends on the type of fur:
- Chinchilla, arctic fox. Refined gasoline will do. Moisten a sponge in it and rinse the collar in the direction of growth. Sprinkle starch on the product and remove any remaining residue with a vacuum cleaner. Hang the collar on the balcony or outside to get rid of the specific smell of gasoline;
- Mink. Heat semolina or starch in the oven, then dry clean;
- Rabbit. Only dry cleaning using any of the methods considered is acceptable. It is prohibited to wet the product with water, since such fur is not of high quality and durability. To clean, you can use lemon juice and gently apply it to the dirty area.

How to wash a permanent fur collar
There are 3 ways to do this, depending on the clothing itself:
- Down jacket.
You can wash the entire down jacket in the machine using the delicate cleaning mode. Pre-place 4-5 tennis balls in the drum, which will prevent the formation of lumps in clothes;
- Parka.
The same thing - washing in a washing machine is available in compliance with the temperature and mode indicated on the label. The parka can also be washed by hand;
- Leather Jacket.
If it is not possible to go to dry cleaning, carefully wash the jacket by hand, preferably using the dry method.
- Regardless of the cleaning method you choose, comb your fur collar well. This will make it look new and neat. We recommend combing your fur collar as often as possible - this will preserve its attractive appearance for a long time.
Using the washing machine
Those housewives who had to face the question of whether it is possible to wash natural fur and its artificial analogue need to know that machine washing of such items is permissible only if the household appliance supports a delicate mode, that is, the entire process takes place at a low number of drum revolutions and low temperature. It would be great if the washing machine also has vertical loading.
To do laundry, you need to purchase a mild detergent; fortunately, there are a lot of such products available now. You cannot wash other items at the same time as synthetic fur items, even those made of the exact same material.
Procedure for machine washing:
- The item is placed in the washing machine tub. If it has vertical loading, it is first filled with water 50% and not turned on. Front loading models include a soak option.
- After 10-15 minutes, the household appliance is switched to delicate washing mode. Soaking things for more than half an hour risks the fact that the chemicals in the detergents will begin to destroy the synthetic material.
- Some washing machines have a gentle spin mode - this is exactly what is needed in this case. But if there is no such function, you will have to manually remove excess moisture from the item so that the drum does not fray the lint. The main thing is not to overdo it, squeezing the thing with your palms.
- After finishing washing, hang the item in the bathroom and wait until the water drains from it. After this, you can hang it on the balcony, protecting it from direct sunlight, which can damage the fabric.
- The final touch should be combing the pile. A soft, wide-toothed brush will do. Comb the faux fur carefully, without making sudden movements.
Hand washing and gentle machine washing can remove dust, light stains and refresh the appearance of your synthetic fur product. But whether it is possible to wash factory-made fur, namely to remove stubborn stains from it, is not entirely clear.
Experts are in a hurry to rejoice - and this is possible, but, of course, no one can give guarantees that the thing will regain its previous appearance.
To remove old stains from synthetic fur items, you can use the following recommendations:
- If you need to clean a collar or cuff that has become very greasy from contact with the skin, you should mix a tablespoon of gasoline or alcohol with a small amount of potato starch, and then apply the resulting slurry to the greasy stains, wait 15 minutes, and then remove with a damp sponge.
- There is nothing difficult about washing a hood made of such fur. The simplest solution is to buy a special stain remover for synthetic materials. If this does not help, then the pile is treated with a cleaning agent in the form of an aerosol or foam. Taken together, these measures will allow you to clean the fur as much as possible.
- Things are more complicated when you need to wash the faux fur from a down jacket. It is impossible to wash a synthetic lining without a down jacket if it is not detachable. Then dry clean with a brush and surface stain remover. Cleaning with a cotton swab dipped in an alcohol-containing solution gives good results.
- You can restore the previous color of white fur by trying to apply lemon juice diluted with water on it, but it will be extremely difficult to return the former whiteness in this way.
By adhering to basic rules and practical tips, you can perfectly wash faux fur without even taking your favorite item to the dry cleaner.
