Instead of throwing out old blankets, here are 11 smart ways to reuse them around the house.

Soft mat

Colds will not be scary for children if the floor is covered with a carpet of soft colored balls filled with cotton wool or padding polyester.

To make the homemade rug more attractive, it is decorated with bright appliqué.

A fluffy path next to your parents' bed will make waking up early more pleasant.

From cut strips that do not unravel, picturesque rugs for the hallway and bathroom are knitted or woven. If the product becomes very dirty, it is easy to replace it with a new one.

The original design idea is a homemade piece, reminiscent of a painting by an abstract artist, made from colored wool scraps sequentially glued to each other.

Decorative pillowcases

From old sheets you can create a very original pillowcase for a decorative pillow. There are many ways to decorate a product:

  • sew on the applique;
  • create flowers or waves from fabric;
  • decorate a plain pillowcase made from a sheet with paint or homemade stamps;
  • sew fabric strips to create a fringe.

Kitchen textiles

A practical option for reusing old bed linen is to create kitchen towels, as well as:

  • mat for drying dishes;
  • potholders and hot stands;
  • serving napkins.

To create kitchen textiles you do not need any special skills. All you need is a sewing machine, scissors and accuracy. If you have a small child, cotton cuts can be used as a bib or napkins for dishes.

Fabric basket

To sew such a basket, you will need thick fabric, a piece of bed linen, pins and thread. One piece of fabric will become the front part of the product, and the second will become the inner part. Depending on the size, ready-made containers can be used to store dirty laundry, toys, and toilet paper rolls. You can also hide unsightly flower pots using textile baskets.

Sew a handle to the finished product to hang the container on a wall or door: this way you will save space on the floor.

Clothes made from blankets

Our latitudes have low temperatures for more than half of the year. Therefore, demi-season clothing needs to be replaced more often than other things. Children who are growing a lot for the next cold weather will really like new eye-catching outfits.

And fashionistas will be attracted not only by the unique appearance, but also by the low price of new things.

Box decor

Pillowcases and sheets can be used to decorate cardboard boxes. You can easily decorate unsightly brown boxes with fabric, thereby ensuring order and comfort on the shelves. Updated boxes will become useful storage for underwear, socks and small accessories.

Before throwing away your old bedding, consider whether the fabric can be reused: you may be able to create an exclusive or useful item for your home without spending a penny.

An old blanket turns...

But the role of a warm product can be changed. Let's talk about possible transformations.

...in clothes and accessories

Clothes made from a bedspread? Why not!

Coat

Every morning in someone’s bedroom you hear “I don’t feel like getting dressed! I wish I could travel in a blanket!” And Estonian designer Marit Ilison offered a collection of coats made from old Soviet bedspreads.

Reference! The original name of the collection is “Kaamos” - literally translated “I want to sleep”, in honor of the story of the same name by A.P. Chekhov.

The colors, familiar to every Soviet person, and the velvety structure of the blanket are harmoniously combined with Swarovski rhinestones.

Each coat in the collection is made in a single copy, handmade by Marit Ilison herself and by skilled seamstresses. And one of the products is Marit’s grandmother’s former bedspread, under which the designer herself slept as a child.

You can certainly use the phrase “I went to work in a blanket today” in the literal sense!

Bag

In addition to outerwear, you can make a wonderful accessory from an old bedspread: a bag for traveling or for going to the grocery store.

It's simple: cut out a rectangle and attach handles. We know for sure that you will not encounter a person with the same bag!

...in home textiles

The ways you can use an old product are limited only by your imagination! Here are some simple ideas to get you started.

Dog toy

Take an old blanket, cut it into several neat strips and braid it into a large braid. This will save you a significant amount of money at the veterinary store!

Pet bed

Another alternative option. The bed is suitable for dogs, and if you build a secluded place (for example, with a roof), then, of course, cats will also like it.

Wigwam

Who hasn't built children's houses out of chairs and blankets! Choose a product of a suitable color, make the base from stable wooden planks. Now build a real home for little dreamers!

Children will be happy to help build the wigwam and spend many exciting hours inside!

Bedspread like grandma's

An old Soviet blanket can be turned into a patchwork style blanket (literally translated as “Product made from patches”). We offer the easiest way to make a bright little thing.

  • Cut the blanket with different patterns into 8x8 cm squares, with a 5 mm allowance.
  • Choose the shape of the future product and arrange the squares by color.
  • Sew into blocks and join using plain stripes.
  • Place the finished product in a vacuum bag and store until the warm season. Perfect for a picnic with loved ones!

Sleeping bag

Do you like to travel? You can make a sleeping bag from an old bedspread. You just need to buy a zipper.

If the ideas seem complicated to you, still don’t rush to throw away your favorite blanket. You will definitely get seats for outdoor furniture or covers for it! You can also use it as packing when moving. Wrap furniture and secure with clear film. The blanket will protect against scratches and allow you to maintain its original appearance.
