What to do if your leather jacket is stretched?

I ordered a leather jacket for my husband from a German site. I received it, but it was a size larger than needed. Lamb leather is good, soft, insulated with a thin layer of synthetic padding. Is it possible to have it sewn to size in a studio (the jacket itself and the sleeves also need to be sewn in). Or not to spoil the thing?

Sewing the sleeves of a leather jacket is easier than it seems. But working with leather has its own nuances. Today I present an article: How to sew up the sleeves of a leather jacket.

Try it on and figure out how long the sleeves need to be sewn. I usually just pinch the excess at the wrist with my index finger and thumb and measure with a ruler. We will sew the sleeves along the elbow seam.

Remove the lining of the sleeves.

Carefully peel off the sleeve hem allowance.

Seam allowances for leather items are taped off. Peel off seam allowances. And remove as much glue as possible. They are glued to a special tape that cannot be completely removed.

It is impossible to sew with this glue, even if it has been partially removed, even with a special second-layer foot, so we will use the old-fashioned method and apply pieces of tracing paper from below and above to the seams of the jacket, fortunately there are glue residues there and the paper will not “run away” anywhere. From the elbow line to the hem cut line, use a pen to draw a narrowing line for the sleeve directly on the tracing paper. Mark the point of the bottom of the sleeve in the finished form. Mark 1/2 of the distance from the taper line to the stitching. Connect these points (not shown in the photo.) This is necessary so that the allowance does not “gather” the sleeve from the front side.

Draw a line along the drawn line and remove the tracing paper.

Use a seam ripper to remove the original stitching. I just move the steamer from the bottom up, the main thing is that it is sharp. Cut off the seam allowance from the new stitch at a distance of 1 cm.

Restore the appearance of the allowance as in photo 3, using Moment Crystal glue, spread it on the sides and glue the allowances.

If the sleeve was not glued with duplicating material, glue it. Glue a 6-9 cm wide strip of low-temperature non-woven fabric with an iron. Do not keep the iron in one place for a long time to avoid iron marks. Glue the seam allowance with a zigzag.

On the lining, find a seam where the garment turns inside out, usually at the elbow seam of the right sleeve. Spread it out. Sew the lining along the elbow seams at the same distance as the main product.

Connect the lining and sleeve and stitch. Repeat for the second sleeve.

Sew up the hole in the sleeve. Master class: How to sew up the sleeves of a leather jacket is finished.

The required sleeve width for your leather goods, dear needlewomen!

Sometimes it happens that people reluctantly buy clothes that do not match their size. Of course, you can exchange the product for another one in the store. But most often this is not possible. In addition, it is common for a person to change body weight, therefore, problems arise with clothes: they become small or one size larger. In any case, you need to get out somehow. And going to a studio is not cheap. Then there remains one more option for the outcome of events, which will be discussed in this article.

Sewing the jacket to size yourself

Now let's look at how you can sew a jacket yourself, depending on where it is too big.

How to sew a jacket at the waist

One of the easiest ways to reduce your clothing size.

  • The first step is to baste the outline of the seam with bright threads.
  • In order to get to the side seam and back, you need to open the hem inside the jacket. Decide on the size and use chalk to mark a line along which you will sew the item in the future.
  • Next, sew the stripes on the sewing machine, having previously selected the stitch width.

Typically its value ranges from 3.5 mm to 4.5 mm.

  • After finishing with the inside, proceeds to the lining. You need to repeat the same actions with her.

At the end of the work, you should try on the updated jacket.

How to sew a jacket on the back

For this option, you also need to decide on the scale and at what seams you will sew the item.

  1. We turn the jacket inside out, and then do the same with the sleeve.
  2. Then we rip the lining on the sleeve at a distance of approximately 15 cm to 20 cm.
  3. The entire material should be pulled out through the hole you get. We machine sew the desired length in the center of the back.
  4. After stitching, turn the jacket back through the hole.
  5. The next step is to straighten the folds of the sections; to do this, fold the lining on the sleeve.
  6. And stitch the edges (two layers of fabric should be caught).

Now all that remains is to turn the clothes inside out so that they are right side out.

How to hem jacket sleeves

First you need to rip the fabric, namely its seam, on the sleeve (this seam should connect to the cuff). You should first measure the length you want to bend with a ruler. Most often this happens from about one and a half to three centimeters. Next, measure the distance from the edge to the straight line, which, therefore, will be the line of the new sleeve (take into account seam allowances). We shorten the lining to the same place. After this, compare the fabric and lining, they should be exactly aligned.

Thank you very much for the link.. but I’m not so much interested in working with leather, but specifically in the actions when removing the foam hangers! Maybe there are some specific laws, well, if it’s removed, then it needs to be altered somewhere, or are these hangers inserted so that they can be easily removed without any alterations? How about the laws of sewing? If the jacket model is meant to have hangers, then some special things are made for this. additives or not?

If the model is cut with shoulder pads, then the height of the shoulder seam is increased by the height of the shoulder pad. Height is measured at the thickest point in the middle of the shoulder pad. If you want to wear a garment without a shoulder, then you need to reduce the height of the end of the shoulder seam by the same height.

thank you very much. I went to find out what the height of the shoulder seam is)))) thank you very much again. )

And if the armhole of the sleeve (jacket) is generally satisfactory, and the shoulder itself is wide, can you only reduce it? (Without touching the armhole, just the collar). And how to do it correctly?

Broad shoulder. Do you mean wide rim? Is there a big fit along the sleeve seam? If the fit is normal, then you still have to adjust the height and length of the shoulder and put the edge in order based on its current appearance. In any case, you will have to rip off the sleeve. If you are going to continue to rely on the advice of the forum, then it is better for you now, without touching anything, to take a photograph of the sleeve-edge at least from two angles - front, back. And then read the advice.

Hello, dear craftswomen, I REALLY need your advice. It turned out that I have asymmetrical shoulders. I didn’t notice this in the mirror, but maybe I’m already used to it)). Now I have finished a blouse (like a men's shirt, without darts, thick silk), one shoulder is fine, the other - the shoulder seam goes to the back, tense oblique folds from under the collar to the armhole. I don’t want to fix it now; in principle, it’s not very visible on this style. But what to do in the future with the pattern? In Burda's book, they advise lowering the back and front asymmetrically down, i.e. shorten But if the wrong shoulder is stooped, then you need to lengthen the backrest on it. How to do this on one side? People, help who can!

It often happens that your favorite item becomes too big in size and does not fit your body type. Sometimes we get clothes from relatives or are bought in a hurry at a sale, but then it turns out that they are too tight on the shoulders or are not the right length. Don’t throw quality products into a landfill because of this. You can solve the problem yourself. Today we will tell you how to sew a leather jacket with your own hands at home, without resorting to the services of expensive workshops.

How to sew clothes at the waist with your own hands?

  • The first step is to take measurements.
  • Then measure the chest circumference using a tailor's tape - it should go along the points that protrude the most.

Important! When taking measurements, make sure that on the back it extends slightly above the level of the shoulder blades.

  • The next step is to measure the narrowest part of your waist, making sure to grab it as tightly as possible without tightening it too much.
  • Next, you should put the product on inside out and apply all the marks, using pins to mark the new side lines.
  • Then it is turned inside out, tried on again, all seams are sewn according to the marks.

Important! If the item fits perfectly at the waist, but dangles in the chest area, then you will have to work a little with the darts, if any, or make them yourself. You should retreat 1-2 cm from the existing darts and stitch them again, moving the triangular darts. The material for this is selected to the required distance from the former seam, and then fixed. The new dart is stitched along the old line at a distance of 1 cm.

Bringing back its former freshness

When everything is done, and it is known how and where to alter a leather jacket, the question arises of restoring the presentable appearance of the leather product. After all, an old jacket usually has some visible or invisible defects. First of all, these are kinks, abrasions, cuts and other deformation conditions. We need to get rid of this urgently. In retail there are many special coloring agents that allow you to add newness to an altered product. In addition, if the damaged area is difficult to paint, or the defect cannot be hidden, decoration comes to the rescue. Embossing or a stylishly selected applique is applied to the problem area. The material, suede, cashmere, drape and other fabrics are selected based on the texture of the leather product.

You can update a leather product with the help of additional decor.

Advice! The highlight of the design solution can be the play of color contrast, the use of additional accessories, for example, buttons, rivets, decorative aiguillettes or steel chains.
