How to care for a down jacket - washing and storage rules

You need to choose a winter jacket wisely. Manufacturers offer a large selection of outerwear filled with down and feathers. Many buyers are wary of such products and prefer to choose models with padding polyester. If you know a few tricks for choosing clothes and 5 tips for caring for a down jacket, which are often forgotten, then there will be no problems.

Down jacket care: read the label

Information on how to care for a down jacket and what procedures it can survive is contained on the label, which is usually sewn into the inside of the garment or on a separate tag.

To indicate certain manipulations, manufacturers use generally accepted icons, which are divided into 5 categories:

  1. Wash;
  2. Drying;
  3. Ironing;
  4. Whitening;
  5. Professional cleaning.

Wash

The washing icon is presented in the form of a schematically drawn basin with water. There is a number inside the icon - this is the temperature at which the down jacket can be washed without harming the integrity and quality of the filling and material.

  1. A bowl of water and a temperature of 95 degrees indicated inside indicates that the product can be washed or even boiled without exceeding the specified maximum temperature;
  2. A similar icon, but with the number 60 - normal washing at temperatures up to 60 degrees;
  3. Basin with the number 30 - washable at temperatures up to 30 degrees;
  4. Taz, the number 30 and a horizontal line drawn below means that the down jacket should be washed on a delicate cycle and at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees;
  5. Two lines under the basin indicate the need for very delicate washing;
  6. If the basin is accompanied by a hand icon, then the product can only be washed by hand. The generally accepted temperature for hand washing is 40 degrees. In this case, the product should not be rubbed with hard brushes or other similar devices, or twisted during spinning;
  7. The product cannot be washed.

Down jackets are most often accompanied by wash icons numbered 3, 4, 5 or 7.

Drying

Drying is indicated by a square symbol with vertical or horizontal lines inside it.

  1. One vertical line – drying in a vertical position. The down jacket can be hung on hangers and left to dry;
  2. Dry vertically and without pre-squeezing. Immediately after washing, the jacket can be hung over the bathtub on hangers;
  3. One horizontal line - the product must be dried on a horizontal plane;
  4. If there are two stripes, you need to dry the down jacket on a flat surface and do not wring it out first;
  5. If there is a triangle in the upper left corner of the square, then you can dry clothes only in the shade: In the shade vertically - one vertical line and a corner;
  6. In the shade, vertically, without spinning - two lines and a corner;
  7. In the shade, horizontally - a horizontal line and a corner;
  8. In the shade, horizontally, without pressing - two lines and a corner.

For down jackets filled with down and feathers, the classic option is vertical drying, but it is still better to study the label.

Special drying is highlighted separately, that is, using drying machines and drums.

  1. Drying at temperatures up to 80 degrees;
  2. Delicate drying at a temperature not exceeding 60 degrees;
  3. Drum drying is prohibited.

Conditions for special drying of down jackets are often found on models that require professional care in dry cleaners.

Ironing

Ironing is indicated by an iron icon. The number of dots inside the icon corresponds to the number of dots on the iron’s thermostat.

  • Three dots inside the iron – iron at temperatures up to 200 °C;
  • Two points – up to 150 °C;
  • One – up to 110 °C;
  • Crossed iron means ironing is prohibited.

A down jacket is a product that is usually not ironed, so the most common symbol on the labels is the last one. If the down jacket still needs to be ironed, a steamer is used for this.

Whitening

Whitening is indicated in the form of a triangle:

  • Empty triangle - the product can be bleached with any bleach;
  • Triangle with oblique lines - can only be used with oxygen-containing bleaches. Such remedies are the most delicate;
  • A crossed out triangle means bleaching is prohibited.

Down jackets are characterized by either a complete ban on bleaching, or delicate bleaching using oxygen bleach or stain remover.

Professional cleaning

Professional cleaning of down jackets is one of the safest ways to remove dirt and freshen the product. Many manufacturers advise sending down jackets to the dry cleaner and for this purpose they leave “messages” on the label for workers so that they know what methods can be used.

Professional cleaning can be dry or wet. Dry cleaning is characterized by the letters P and F placed inside a circle.

  1. Cleaning using all solvents;
  2. Delicate dry cleaning with any solvents;
  3. Dry cleaning using hydrocarbon products;
  4. Delicate dry cleaning with hydrocarbon agents;
  5. Dry cleaning is prohibited.

For wet cleaning, the icons have the letter W also placed in a circle.

  1. Regular wet cleaning;
  2. Delicate;
  3. Particularly delicate;
  4. Wet cleaning is prohibited.

As you can see, the label says much more about the down jacket than the size or country of manufacture. Now that the issue with markings is clear, you can move on to practice - learn how to properly care for a down jacket - from washing and drying to storage.

WHAT DOES THE DOWN JACKET LABEL SAY?

Before washing, carefully read the down jacket label. He will tell you how to properly care for your clothes, whether washing at home is possible (if so, which of the two options) or is it better to immediately spend money on dry cleaning.

Here are the most common designations for a down jacket.

Any washing is prohibited. The only way out is to take the down jacket to the dry cleaner.
Do not wash in a washing machine. This does not exclude hand washing. As an option - the same dry cleaning.
Hand wash only possible.
Machine wash in water not higher than the specified temperature. If one horizontal line is indicated under the symbol, then this is a soft treatment, two - very delicate.
Spinning in a centrifuge is prohibited.
Only dry cleaning is allowed.
Dry cleaning is prohibited.

In very rare cases, the tag may contain two prohibiting symbols - it cannot be machine washed and dry cleaning is prohibited. This means that such a product can only be dry cleaned using the “water cleaning” method. We mentioned it in the first paragraph of this publication.

How to wash a down jacket in a washing machine

It is logical that you need to wash the down jacket as the manufacturer recommends on the label - the washing mode and temperature are indicated there, or the need to take the down jacket to the dry cleaner. But there are other subtleties of washing that are not reflected in the labeling.

Preparation

  1. Before placing your down jacket in the washing machine drum, make sure all pockets are empty. Small pieces of paper will get wet during the washing process and stick to the surface of the down jacket, and sharp items can tear the fabric, so check your pockets well;
  2. Fasten the locks. Zipper teeth when rotating the drum can damage the integrity of the down jacket fabric;
  3. If there is fur on the hood, it is better to unfasten it;
  4. Examine the down jacket for holes. Firstly, after washing the holes may become larger, and secondly, fluff may come out through them. If you find holes, you should sew them up before washing;
  5. Turn the prepared down jacket inside out.

Choice of product: how to wash a down jacket

To wash down jackets, it is recommended to use mild detergents, preferably in liquid format - washing gels, for example. Make sure that the composition does not contain chlorine or bleach, as these components can corrode the thin fabric of the jacket lining or clog the membrane holes.

  • For down jackets filled with padding polyester, any detergent, even ordinary powder, is suitable, but keep in mind that after rinsing, powders can leave streaks on the fabric;
  • For down jackets filled with down and feathers, it is better to choose special formulations designed for washing down. Such products preserve the structure of the down filling and also remove fatty secretions that down may produce;
  • Down jackets with a membrane , regardless of the filling, are also best washed with special products for this category of products. They do not interfere with the function of the fabric and also create a moisture-proof layer.

Gels for washing down jackets are sold in departments of household chemicals, on marketplaces, and sometimes in down jacket stores. The most popular are Down Wash, OS-gel, Purshat.

How to wash a down jacket at home in a washing machine:

  1. Load the down jacket into the washing machine, but do not add other things to this wash cycle - even if the volume of the machine allows, it is better to wash the down jacket alone;
  2. If desired, add special laundry balls or a couple of tennis balls. This is one of the life hacks that will help you avoid fluff from becoming clumps, although it does not always work;
  3. Set the washing mode. The maximum temperature and mode can be found on the label, but if it is not there, choose “Delicate wash” and the water temperature is no higher than 30 degrees. If the functionality of the washing machine allows, add an additional rinse cycle - this will help avoid streaks after washing, which often remain after powder on dark jackets;
  4. Pour in or pour in detergent. In the case of down jackets, it is better to use a special compartment for this, rather than adding the product directly to the drum - due to the density and volume of outerwear, it will be difficult for the product to be evenly distributed and to wash the product well. The quantity is determined by the manufacturer in the instructions for a specific product based on the temperature and type of washing, and the weight of the product. For example, Purshat gel for down jackets needs from 50 to 100 ml per wash cycle;
  5. Close the drum and start the wash.

@moncler

If your down jacket or coat is heavily soiled, apply a soap solution to the stains before putting them in the washing machine and leave for 5-10 minutes. After this, the area can be rubbed with a soft brush or immediately sent to the machine.

Features of down filler

The products have several features that need to be taken into account when purchasing and during use. For sewing, 70-80% down and 20-30% feathers are used.

The down and feathers of waterfowl (duck, loon, goose) are natural fillers that retain heat well and provide air exchange. They are used to make winter jackets.

The products have several disadvantages. Namely:

  • the filler clumps into clumps and the product loses its original shape;
  • over time, the structure of the feather is destroyed, it becomes brittle and loses its protective properties;
  • natural filler absorbs moisture and odors;
  • Clothes require careful care. Frequent washing is not recommended;
  • in a low-quality product, fluff passes through the lining and remains on the clothing;
  • the item must be well quilted. The insulation is placed in special stitched cells. This is the only way the clothes will retain their shape and the feather will not cake.

Jackets with down filling are expensive, but their service life is about 10 years if the rules of wearing and careful care are followed.

If it is heavily soiled, you can use dry cleaning services, but you will have to incur considerable financial costs.

But professional cleaning does not guarantee perfect results.

How to wash a down jacket by hand

Hand washing a down jacket is a much safer procedure for its quality, but also less effective, since it is difficult to properly clean the product by hand. There are two ways to hand wash a down jacket:

  1. Vertical;
  2. With soaking.

Vertical wash

Vertical washing is suitable if the down jacket just needs to be refreshed and there is no serious contamination.

  1. Hang the down jacket on hangers and hang it over the bathtub;
  2. Using a stream of warm water from the shower, wet the down jacket from bottom to top. Make sure that the water temperature does not exceed 40 degrees;
  3. Soap the down jacket. For this washing method, using dry powder is not convenient, so it is better to use liquid detergents;
  4. Using a soft brush or sponge, carefully, without pressure, walk over the surface of the down jacket, paying special attention to the sleeves and collar area;
  5. Using a shower jet from top to bottom, wash off the foam. Repeat this step several times to remove all remaining product.

With soaking

This method is appropriate when the down jacket is very dirty and a simple shower rinse will not help.

  1. Fill the bath with warm water - no higher than 40 degrees;
  2. Dilute the required amount of detergent in water;
  3. Soak the down jacket and using pressing movements, let it fill with moisture;
  4. Leave the jacket to soak for 30-40 minutes;
  5. After the specified time, use a soft brush or sponge to walk through the most contaminated areas. Please note that it is not recommended to rub the down jacket like ordinary things. If the stains do not come off, apply a soap solution to them - preferably from a special laundry soap. Some recommend using laundry soap, but despite all its excellent cleaning properties, it can leave yellow stains on white or simply light-colored down jackets;
  6. Drain the bath water and rinse the down jacket well under running water. Keep in mind that you will have to do this for at least 7-10 minutes to remove all the foam.

Never twist the down jacket to remove moisture. Hang it over the bathtub to drain the water, and then move it to the drying area.

How to remove stains from a down jacket?

It is not at all necessary to wash the entire down jacket very often. It may be clean, and sometimes even almost new, but it may develop stains. You can catch a spot anywhere - on the street, in a cafeteria, on public transport, while hiking. In order to remove a stain, you can use fairly simple methods that will help keep the item in its original condition.

How to deal with a stain on a down jacket? First of all, there are general rules for this:

  • First you need to remove the hard layer of dirt. If there is one, it needs to be scraped off or cleaned off with a brush or sponge.
  • The stain must be washed from the edge to the center.
  • The product used to remove the stain must be thoroughly rinsed off.
  • When rinsing the detergent, you need to cover a larger area than the stain itself. This will help get rid of divorces.
  • Let it dry, as only after the down jacket has dried can you see the result.

How to remove grease stains?

Grease stains are the most common contamination on outerwear. And they will help you deal with it:

  1. Salt. As soon as a stain appears, you should immediately sprinkle it with salt. It will immediately absorb the fat, and it will be much easier to remove the stain.
  2. Dishwashing liquid. You need to make a solution of detergent with a small amount of water, apply it to the stain using a sponge, wait a little, then remove the foam and rinse with water.
  3. Soap or washing powder. It is strictly not recommended to wash the entire down jacket with washing powder, but you can apply powder diluted in water to a small area. But it is very important to rinse it off thoroughly so that no white streaks remain.
  4. Talc and chalk. Mix talc and chalk, pour onto the stain, place a sheet of paper on top, press down with something heavy and leave for 12 hours. After washing there will be no trace of the stain left.
  5. Ammonia. Mix 1 tbsp in one glass of water. l. ammonia and treat the stain. Then wash it.
  6. Petrol. Grease stains can be removed using purified gasoline. Using a cotton swab, apply a little gasoline to the greasy or oil stain, and then rinse with water.

How to get rid of shine?

It often happens that from constant use of public transport or from wearing a backpack on the back, the jacket begins to shine and look very untidy. A solution of vinegar and water in a ratio of 1:3 will help. Rub the shiny areas with this solution using a sponge and let dry.

Important! This solution will also help get rid of unpleasant odors.

How to remove different stains?

Before you remove a stain on a down jacket, you need to understand its nature. The method that will help get rid of pollution depends on this. The same method can remove one stain and make another more noticeable:

  • Rusty stains and yellow spots. Using a cotton swab, apply vinegar or lemon juice to the stain and then rinse with water.
  • Raindrops or drops from dirt. A soap solution will help remove them. It is necessary to apply the solution to the area of contamination, rub and rinse.
  • Blood. Apply hydrogen peroxide to the blood stain, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse with water.

Important! This method only works on light-colored fabrics.

  • Unknown contamination. Ammonia and hydrogen peroxide in a 1:1 ratio will help remove such stains.

Important! Before using any of the methods, you need to try it on the inside of the down jacket or on a fabric sample.

How to dry a down jacket correctly

  1. Turn the washed down jacket right side out and straighten it on the hangers;
  2. Hang it vertically away from direct sunlight and heating devices at room temperature;
  3. If the fluff gets stuck, you can straighten it with your hands;
  4. You need to dry a down jacket from several hours to 2 days, depending on its density, type of washing, and room temperature. A down jacket takes the longest to dry after hand washing.

Life hack: to quickly dry a down jacket and break up any lumps of filler, use a vacuum cleaner. Remove the nozzle from it, turn on the weakest mode and run the tube over the down jacket from the inside.

Drying a down jacket

Drying a jacket filled with down also requires special care. You need to leave the product in an upright position (on wide soft hangers) in the fresh air, whisking it periodically. This way the filler will be evenly distributed throughout the product and will not form lumps. If you leave the down jacket to dry in a horizontal position, the filling will become locked and the process of rotting may begin in it.

If you decide to dry outerwear with delicate fillings in the washing machine, you need to do it on the delicate cycle.

How to wear a down jacket correctly

@snowqueen_russia

In this section we will not talk about fashionable looks and successful combinations, but about how to care for a down jacket during wear so that it lasts longer:

  • Dry and air your jacket after each exposure to snow or rain . It’s not a good idea to hang a jacket in a closet without allowing it to dry - such manipulations cause the fluff to cake, and in a humid environment various bacteria may well develop, especially if the filling is natural and not padding polyester;
  • Do not store your down jacket close to heating appliances . This can harm the quality of the down jacket fabric and also contribute to the rapid deterioration of down;
  • Take off your jacket in rooms where there is a strong smell - in smoky rooms, canteens and cafes, in food courts . The down-feather filling absorbs odors perfectly and if you do not remove it, you will have to constantly “walk” the jacket on the balcony to eliminate the aroma of tobacco or food;
  • Wash your down jacket 1-2 times per season if you wear the jacket all the time . Even if the down jacket is visually clean - which is, of course, unlikely in a metropolis - the down inside may well cake and become greasy.

What should you not do when washing a down jacket?

  • Do not wash a down jacket with powder

    . Only liquid detergents, preferably specialized ones, are suitable for such washing.

  • Bleach is not suitable for washing down jackets

    . Even if the product is white.

  • Drying on a radiator, hairdryer or near heaters

    can completely ruin your outerwear.

  • Water temperature above 30-40 degrees

    will render the down jacket unusable.

  • Don't dry your down jacket for too long

    . 1-2 days are enough for complete drying. If there is moisture left in the product, it may acquire an unpleasant odor and you will have to wash it again.

  • Check the seams

    . If the threads come apart somewhere or a hole has formed, you need to sew it up. Even through a small hole in the fabric, the filling can come out when washed.

Don't put your dirty down jacket in the closet when the season ends. During the time spent in the closet, dirty stains can be absorbed into the fabric, making them difficult to wash. Moreover, the jacket takes a long time to dry and you risk being left without outerwear while your down jacket dries. The down jacket should be stored in a case made of natural fabric in a dark, dry place.

How to store and care for a down jacket during the off season

@baonshop

Let's be honest - in 9 out of 10 cases, a winter jacket in the summer simply hangs in the closet inside out, or is packed in a merciless vacuum bag. Did you guess it? But the storage features don’t end there - in order for your down jacket to please you next season, it is important to responsibly store it during the off-season.

  • Winter clothes should be stored in a dry, cool and dark place . Make sure that the product is not exposed to sunlight - this will spoil the properties of the fabric and filler;
  • Store only clean items . It is important to dry clean the down jacket before storing it or wash it yourself. And the most important thing is to dry it well. It is difficult to describe the smell of a down jacket that has been stored undried or packed in a vacuum bag;
  • It is better to store down jackets on hangers . Yes, vacuum bags are convenient. They save space and allow you to avoid cluttering your closet with winter jackets, but after 8 months of inactivity, the down becomes deformed and returning it to its normal shape is difficult and sometimes impossible;
  • It is advisable to use covers . Fabric storage covers allow air to pass through, but prevent dust from settling on the surface, absorbing odors and being exposed to the sun. If there is no cover, we recommend at least turning the down jacket inside out. It is advisable that the cover be the length of the down jacket - even if it is maxi length.

@ikea_rus

About vacuum packaging. We do not recommend storing down jackets, regardless of the material and filling, in such packages, as this greatly affects both the quality and appearance of the product. But sometimes there is no choice, so take note of 2 important nuances of using vacuum bags:

  • Use vacuum packaging to store down jackets only with synthetic filling;
  • Throughout storage, periodically open the bag so that the down jacket can “breathe” and the filler does not have time to cake too much. You can take the jacket out, shake it, fluff it up, and put it away again.

Care of clothing made from wool, cashmere, acrylic, knitwear and polyester

Even if you do not buy products made from 100% natural material, pay attention to the label, what is written in the composition, and see which fabric is more abundant.
Do not ignore the tags on the inside of the product, which tell you how to properly care for this item. Sort items to be washed - black, colored and white separately from each other. If it seems to you that the item is not dyed, light-colored fabrics will still very soon look like a washed item, and colored fabrics will take on a gray tint.

When putting clothes in the wash, turn them inside out. If the item is heavily soiled, pre-soak the item for 5-7 minutes in cool water and a special detergent. A baby wash may be suitable. Skip the soaking step if you have light-colored items with colored patterns or 3D printing and embroidery, as well as wool items.

Set the temperature to 30 degrees, for cashmere 15 degrees, and for polyester products a water temperature of 40 degrees is suitable. Set the average spin speed. This will keep the item from shrinking, losing shape and color. It is better to wash things on a manual, delicate or wool cycle, adding liquid detergents. If the clothing is 100% cashmere, then choose to hand wash exclusively. Acrylic or woolen items can be placed in a special bag of a suitable size and a liquid antistatic agent can be added during washing to improve the properties of the fabric.

Dry sweaters in a horizontal position, blotting them first in a towel or cloth if they seem very wet. Do not twist the product so as not to deform the fabric, stretch it or form pills. Under no circumstances should you dry it on radiators or simply on hangers. The item will stretch, become stiff, and the color will lose saturation. Clothes made of polyester can be dried on a hanger, having straightened the item well, since not all products made from this fabric can be ironed.

If items have additional elements - beads, appliqué, inserts from other types of fabric, be prepared to devote time to washing only by hand. If you find it difficult to care for, take the item to the dry cleaner. After first making sure from the information on the label that this can be done. The empty circle on the clothing label will tell you this.

Sweaters and all warm items must be steamed from the inside out through damp gauze or cloth, keeping the device at a short distance from the item. This should not be done on wet or damp clothes; wait until they are completely dry so as not to deform the fabric.

Now I’ll say this, don’t be surprised, but warm, winter fabrics need to be given time to “rest” and “ventilate”. Wear warm clothes no more than 2-3 times a week, this will double the life of your clothes. The fabric will not absorb the maximum amount of odors, the fibers will not wrinkle or fade.

Even on a daily basis, do not store knitted or any other warm sweaters on hangers in your closet. Fold in small piles and store horizontally, without placing heavy items on top, otherwise the material will roll and become deformed. If you have created a hook, do not cut it, but thread it with a needle or knitting needle to the wrong side and tie and secure.

If pellets form, remove them with a special machine. Even a very budget option will help, tested from personal experience. When storing cashmere clothing for a long time, put it in thin paper bags or papyrus paper to prevent high humidity and absorption of foreign odors. Cashmere products are especially resistant to moths; try to keep citrus or lavender scented sachets in your closet to protect your items.

Cleaning a down jacket at a dry cleaner or laundry

Entrusting a down jacket to professionals is sometimes the best solution:

  • Dry cleaning will save time;
  • There is no need to understand labels and select special products;
  • The likelihood of spoiling the product is lower than when washing it yourself, although there are, of course, exceptions.

The main disadvantage of dry cleaning a down jacket is that it requires financial expenses. The cost of professional cleaning depends on the level of laundry, the material, the products and equipment used, and the degree of soiling. In Moscow, for example, you will have to pay from 2 to 5 thousand rubles for a down coat or jacket.

Before sending your down jacket to the dry cleaner, do not forget to check the pockets - and the specialists will do the rest themselves.

How to care for jeans

Before washing, turn your jeans inside out and remove everything from your pockets. Set the temperature to 30 - 40 degrees and select the delicate wash mode with a minimum number of spin speeds so that the denim does not lose color or become deformed. Pour liquid powder for denim, but there is no need to add rinse aid, as it makes the fabric fibers softer and the jeans lose their shape. The ideal option would be to wash your jeans separately from all other items, so that the denim does not stain the items or become wrinkled to the point of creating hard creases in the fabric.

You need to dry your jeans vertically, hanging them from your belt, or even better, lay them out on a smooth horizontal surface. If after washing the item seems damp enough to you, do not twist the jeans, leave them to dry. The darker the jeans, the less often you can wash them, removing stains locally. This will ensure color consistency throughout the entire piece. It is highly not recommended to dry jeans in a dryer.

You can iron denim only from the inside out, if required. It is prudent to organize the correct position during drying, in which the item wrinkles less.

Store your jeans by hanging them from your waistband on a special hanger with clips. Avoid folding them into piles, as creases will form faster and the fabric will wear out faster.

These simple rules for caring for the clothes we often wear in winter will help extend the life of our items. You will be less likely to think about how you forgot to cut the pills out of your sweater, you will stop suffering from the fact that your jeans become stiff after frequent washing, and your cardigan accidentally runs too small. Of course, there may be dozens more life hacks for each type of fabric, but I have given working rules, following which, you will see how easier it has become for you to get ready in the morning, because there are no problems with the appearance of things.

Common mistakes in caring for down jackets

  • Washing too often . Thorough washing in a washing machine or with soaking should not be done too often - this harms the quality of the filler. Optimally 1-2 times per season, and if the down jacket is light, only when it gets dirty. The rest of the time it is better to clean the down jacket locally;
  • Wash with regular powder . This mistake will be especially critical for membrane down jackets - such fabric is very capricious. In addition, undissolved particles of powder can clog the holes, which will lead to a violation of the properties of such a jacket;
  • Push-up and twisting of a down jacket . Such manipulations spoil the filler and can also cause tears and abrasions in the fabric;
  • Drying on the battery . Drying near radiators causes down jackets to develop an unpleasant odor, and such aggressive heat spoils the down-feather filling. By the way, it’s also better not to use a hairdryer.

How to dry and fluff a down jacket

You can dry things with down filling in a special drying machine or by hand. Do this quickly so that the fluff does not develop an unpleasant odor.

Dry the product flat on a drying rack or the back of a chair. Avoid exposure to sunlight, do not use iron or heating devices. Shake thoroughly and beat the item so that the fluff dries and is distributed evenly.

Follow the rules of care - and your down jacket will keep you warm and happy for many years.

Should you prefer dry cleaning or home washing?

It is preferable to dry clean down jackets with special impregnation, because after home washing such fabric may lose its moisture-proof properties. In addition, down dries very slowly, and if it is not dried properly, the surface of the down jacket may become covered with dirty yellow stains.

Most dry cleaners have mastered modern technologies for cleaning down jackets. Today they no longer use dry cleaning, but wet cleaning “aquaclean” - it is much more effective. Such cleaning is a delicate wash with special detergents that do not contain alkalis or acids. Special additives are also used that preserve the color of the products and protect them from shrinkage, deformation and fluff matting. If the hood and cuffs of a down jacket are trimmed with natural fur, or the product has fur inserts, then it is quite difficult to clean it at home. On the contrary, in dry cleaning there is a technology for cleaning fur using fatliquoring components that give the fur softness and shine.

Down jackets are dried under dry cleaning conditions, first in a drying drum, and then in a hanging drying chamber on brackets. This drying method prevents the appearance of streaks on the fabric, returns airiness to the moistened down, and returns the correct shape to the down jacket itself.
