Very few people nowadays can imagine life without an automatic washing machine. Its breakdown sometimes becomes a real nightmare, because not everyone has the time and energy to do hand washing, and not everyone can afford to regularly use dry cleaning services. It is quite possible to fix some problems yourself. A fairly common problem is the locking mechanism of the loading hatch. Why this happens and how to unlock the washing machine, we’ll figure it out further.
Why the hatch door does not open: reasons for blocking
There are several reasons why the washing machine hatch may not open.
Natural causes
If the wash has not yet finished, the door will be locked. Manufacturers of washing equipment, when developing electronics, carefully consider a security system that automatically blocks the lock during an unfinished wash. This is necessary to ensure that the door does not accidentally open when the machine is running at high power. Also, a small child can open the hatch when washing is carried out at 90 °C. If hot water spills out, he may suffer a thermal burn.
All modern washing machines are equipped with a program that automatically unlocks the lock 3-5 minutes after the end of the wash. Therefore, if the things have already been washed, but the door does not want to open, then you need to wait this time. In the instructions for models with drying, manufacturers indicate that the lock will unlock after the drum has cooled.
Natural reasons for the washing machine door to lock are due to the electronics of the device
Power outage
If there is a power or water outage, the machine will not open the hatch to prevent water from spilling out. This is especially true for horizontal loading equipment. If frequent power surges occur, the system may freeze and block the hatch.
- If the light is turned off for a short time (about 30 minutes), you just need to wait until it appears and the machine itself opens the door if there is no water in the tank.
- If there is no electricity for a long time, and you need to remove the laundry from the machine, you will have to drain the water manually through the drainage filter, where the emergency hose is located. When you drain all the water, the door may automatically unlock.
- If this does not happen, you will have to open the door yourself. To do this, you need to take a strong, not very thick rope and thread it through the gap along the entire circumference of the hatch. You can help yourself with a screwdriver. Then take both ends of it and pull it forcefully towards you: the lock hook will move away and the machine door will open. But this method is not suitable for some brands of cars, such as Kandy, since the lock device works differently in it.
- When you turn off the water, you must stop the wash and select the “Spin”, “Drain”, “Drain without spin” option or the “Spin + Drain” button, depending on the brand of the machine. After the process is completed, all water will drain from the tank and the door will automatically unlock.
Malfunctions of household appliances
- the handle on the door has broken and now it moves freely (the reason is wear and tear of parts due to improper handling of equipment, the use of great physical force when opening the door);
- breakdown of the locking system, which simply “will not release” the door and will require forced opening and replacement of the UBL;
- the “smart” module that sends a signal to the locking system has failed (in this case, you will need to open the hatch yourself using the above method, and then reflash the control board or reset the program completely).

Lock device
Note that there are a large number of variations of locks. Manufacturers of washing machines install different locks on their models, which differ in shape, size, and method of fastening. They also differ in their operating principles. There are mainly two types used:
- thermal;
- electronic.
One of the UBL options
Thermal UBL
At the heart of the thermal lock is an RTS resistor and (or) a bimetallic plate. After closing the hatch and starting the washing program, a voltage of 220 volts is supplied to the resistor. It begins to heat up quickly and simultaneously heats the plate, which bends.
As a result, it blocks the hatch hook using a latch, preventing it from opening during the wash cycle. The bimetallic plate also closes the control contact, as a result of which the selected program begins to be executed.
The diagram and principle of operation of such a lock is shown in the figure below.
Note that markings in the form of letters: N, L and C are often present on the UBL contacts, which makes it easier to check. Instead of an RTS thermistor, a winding made of high-resistance wire can be used. And also two resistors are used in some models, which does not change the principle of operation.
Let us repeat that locks vary in shape, size and fastening, and if you need to purchase them, you need to select them according to the product number of the machine.
Simple thermal lock
This type of lock opens itself after the wash is completed. This is both a plus and a minus. The main disadvantage is that the opening takes place after 2-3 minutes, since the bimetallic plate needs time to cool and take its original shape, thereby releasing the tongue that holds the door. Most washing machines have a light indicator for holding the hatch.

Ask a Question
Important! Neglecting the cooling time leads to breakage of the lock mate, which is located directly in the door.
Such UBLs are used in inexpensive models “Indesit”, “Ariston”, “Beko”, “LGi”, “Samsung”, “Ardo”, “Whirlpool”.
Electronic lock
An electromagnet is added to such a locking device, which is controlled by pulses coming from the module. And also in such UBLs there may also be an RTS resistor. In this case, the thermistor with a bimetallic plate closes the control wire, and the electromagnet moves the latch that blocks the hatch.
The castle is shown schematically in the figure below.
Sometimes such a UBL is called instantaneous, because locking and unlocking occur instantly. This is an undeniable advantage.
Such devices are installed on models of the mid-price level and above, such as: Electrolux, Zanussi, Kandy, Bosch, Siemens, AEG. There is only one drawback: the verification is difficult.
A hatch with such a UBL can be opened only if the following conditions are met:
- the machine is connected to the electrical network;
- none of the programs are running;
- there is no water in the drum;
- The engine does not rotate.
Note that washing machines with such locks are equipped with emergency opening devices, which are usually located in the area of the drain pump filter cover.
Burnt electronic lock
Why is the washing machine door locked?
Regardless of the cause of the breakdown, it should be remembered that attempts to open the hatch by force are strictly prohibited. Doing so may result in electric shock. Also, after such an intervention, the mechanism will be severely damaged, which will require expensive repairs. The instructions for the device, which describe breakdown signals, will help you find out the source of the problem.
Reasons why the washing machine door does not open:
- automatic temporary blockade at the end of the washing program;
- electrical voltage drop;
- lack of water;
- software failure;
- The washing machine does not open after washing due to a system board failure;
- the “child lock” function has been activated;
- breakdown of the lock or door handle of the device;
- filter clogging;
- There is water left in the tank due to a broken pump.
If the washing machine notifies you that there is no water, you must turn off the program and continue after the pressure returns.
The first three points can be corrected without much effort. After washing, the door usually opens after 2-3 minutes. If the waiting time for opening is exceeded, you need to turn off the washing machine from the network, wait about half an hour, and turn on the device again. The device will reset and open.
Sometimes this needs to be done while the process has begun. For example, they didn’t put something in the washing machine that needed immediate washing, or they didn’t take out a bunch of keys from their pockets, which began to rattle in the drum.
Just pause the washer and wait a few minutes. If the door does not open, remove the plug from the electrical outlet. Many devices at such moments begin to drain the water on their own, then open the hatch to load.
This problematic issue can be resolved by simply cleaning the filter. As a rule, it is located at the bottom of the machine and is closed with a plug. If everything is in order, then screw the plug into place and try to set the “rinse and spin” modes. If such actions do not help, disconnect the washing machine from the power supply and wait at least a quarter of an hour. If this does not help, you will have to remove the top cover and try to open the lock from the inside.
It happens that the washing machine does not want to open the hatch when the button that blocks the door from small children is accidentally pressed. In such a situation, all you have to do is hold down the “start” button for about five seconds to unlock the washing machine.
Causes of failure
Locking the washing machine hatch is one of the most important elements of the entire device. It is he who protects the owner’s property from flooding. Why doesn't the door of the washing machine open after washing?
If the door opens randomly during the washing process, all the water from the drum will end up not only in the owner’s apartment, but also with the neighbors living on the floor below. What is the reason that the hatch door is locked? There may be several options.
Broken handle
Budget models of washing machines most often have a plastic handle. If this material is far from high quality, the handle may fail at any time. The only way out in such a situation is to replace the broken part. But how to do this if the hatch is blocked? There are several ways to open a machine with a broken handle.
- Many models of washing machines (Samsung, Ariston, Indesit, Bosch) are equipped with an emergency door opening lever. This point is always reflected in the attached instructions. The mechanism is usually located next to the garbage filter. To open the door, simply pull the lever. The door should open.
- If there is no lever, a thin nylon thread or fishing line will come to the rescue. To open the hatch, the fishing line must be pushed into the gap between the body and the door. The most convenient way to do this is with a flat-head screwdriver. Next, the fishing line is pulled under the hatch and pulled towards itself with force. Sometimes the manipulation has to be done several times.
- You can also unlock the door through the top cover of the washing machine. To begin with, the device is disconnected from the network and the upper part is carefully removed. There will be free space at the front of the case between the wall and the counterweight. You need to reach the hatch closing mechanism with your hand and try to open it.
Once the hatch is open, all that remains is to remove the broken handle. Most often, this part is not repaired, so it will be easier and faster to purchase a new handle in a specialized store and install it in place of the old one.
Unexpected power outage
In the event of an unexpected power outage, the washing machine automatically blocks the hatch. This is necessary so that the water remaining inside does not spill out. In addition, the electronic components of the device may “freeze” after a power surge. Under no circumstances should you try to open the hatch by force. Options for action may be as follows:
- If there is a short-term power outage (no more than half an hour), you will have to wait until the power is turned on again. In most cases, the machine will unblock itself when the current supply is restored. This option will work if there was no water in the drum at the time of the power outage.
- If there is no power soon and the wash program has not been completed, the water in the drum will have to be drained manually. For this purpose there is a hose at the bottom of the machine. Once the water stops flowing from the hose, the hatch door will unlock automatically.
- Sometimes the methods described above do not bring the desired result. In this case, you will have to open the door manually - for example, using the same fishing line.
Most popular brands (LG, Gorenje, Siemens) have the same hatch locking mechanism, and there should be no problems. The exception is Kandy brand units - the trick with fishing line will not work with them.
Water in the drum
Sometimes there is water left inside the drum after the wash cycle ends. Of course, the door will not open in this case. How to unlock the hatch in such a situation? The options listed below will work.
- If the reason for the atypical behavior of the washing machine is an electronic failure, you can try running another suitable program - for example, “rinse” or “spin”. After the allotted time for the cycle has passed, the door should unlock automatically.
- The reason that water remains in the drum may be a blockage in the drain hose. In this case, running the spin and rinse programs will not bring results. After cleaning the hose, the spin program starts again.
- Often the reason that water remains in the drum is the failure of the pump or water level sensor. In such cases, the corresponding icon will light up on the display. The elimination of such a malfunction will have to be entrusted to a specialist, since some working units will need to be replaced.
The water in the drum is not always visible, so if you have problems unlocking the hatch, you can check for the presence of liquid by draining it through a garbage hose. If there is liquid inside the device, it will certainly leak out. All that remains is to select a container of the appropriate volume.
What is the washing machine door lock used for?
The mechanism that locks the drum door of the washing machine is designed to ensure safety during washing. The mechanism locks the hatch automatically when the machine starts and opens it later after its operation is completed. If the door locking mechanism malfunctions, it remains closed even after the wash is finished and the machine is turned off.
The main reasons leading to this malfunction are:
- Software errors arising from power surges or problems associated with pumping and draining water;
- Wear of the mechanism that locks the hatch;
- A clogged hose preventing complete drainage of water;
- The child lock system is activated.
If the cause of the problem is a power supply failure, you must wait until the specified program is reset. As a rule, it resets within half an hour, after which the hatch can be safely opened. True, this method of “repair” will not work if there is still water in it.
If the child lock function is turned on unplanned, the drum door can only be opened by simultaneously pressing two unlocking buttons on the machine. Moreover, each brand of washing machine has a different combination of buttons that can open the locking mechanism.
If, at the end of the wash, not all the water has been pumped out of the machine and the door does not open because of this, you can use one of the following options to solve this problem:
- repeat the laundry spin cycle again or run this function together with the rinse mode;
- inspect the water drainage hose for blockages, and then run the spin mode again;
- use an emergency opening cable, usually located next to the filter, in the lower right corner and colored red or orange. When using the cable, do not yank it - just, slowly, gently pull its handle.
If all of the above recommendations do not help, you can take a risk and try to remove the blocking manually. Once you decide to take this step, perform all actions as carefully as possible so as not to aggravate the breakdown. First, unplug the unit from the outlet and remove the top cover. Then, carefully disengage the mechanism that locks the door and tilt the machine. When tilted, its drum will move back and provide access to the lock location. Now, all that remains to be done is to reach it with your hand and open it. This unlocking method is quite complicated due to the considerable weight of the washing machine, so if you decide to do it, take someone to help you.
In 95% of cases, one of the considered methods of releasing laundry sent for washing will definitely help and the blocking of the hatch will be removed. The remaining 5% falls on the design nuances of equipment from various manufacturers and larger-scale breakdowns that only a professional can handle.
We looked at universal methods for eliminating the failure of automatic opening of the hatch of an automatic car, which can be applied to any model and brand. However, along with them, it would also be appropriate to touch upon methods applicable to models of a particular manufacturer.
In what cases is it necessary to call a specialist?
Knowing how to open a stopped automatic machine if it is locked, you will be able to remove loaded items from it, but you will not always be able to restore its functionality. In case of any problems with the control unit or in cases of breakdown of critical parts, you should contact a repair shop. To do this, you had to take the simplest preventive measures as little as possible:
- open and close the hatch carefully, without unnecessary effort;
- do not exceed the drum loading rate;
- When the first signs of a malfunction appear, take action to prevent serious damage from occurring.

Instructions if the door does not open after washing in the washing machine
To unlock the machine after washing, it is important to remember that if the product is under warranty, then it is strictly prohibited to independently install or, in other words, repair the device
Some believe that it is impossible to open the hatch of a modern automatic washing machine using the old method, since a simple blow to the hatch or its side will not give any result at all. The methods should be gentler and, most importantly, professional, which will avoid other serious damage.
- Indesit;
- Bosch;
- Samsung;
- Ariston;
- Lji and others.
First you need to figure out why the door is blocked. It is worth noting that the natural locking of the washing machine during the washing period is a completely normal phenomenon, however, the period of inactivity of the lock for each model may be different. For example, some keep the lock closed for 2-3 minutes, while in other cases the blocking can last up to 15 minutes.
There may be delays in the functioning of the blocking element, which depends on:
- Module serviceability;
- Mains voltage;
- Water in the tank, because if there are problems with draining and it is very slow, then the unblocking will be appropriate.
In order to prevent the door from blocking due to loss of electricity or interruptions in its operation, it is advisable to install special surge protectors. Thus, you can not only avoid problems in the operation of the module, but also maintain the functioning of the entire device for a long time. This also helps to extend the service life.
As for the door blocking due to remaining water in the tank, this is a completely natural process, since it is a banal safety feature of the equipment. This point allows you to avoid consequences such as flooding of the apartment and the floors below with subsequent investments.
The door in the automatic machine, as already noted, is blocked quite often. The owner of a Bosch, Samsung, Indesit and other brands may encounter this problem. If you cannot forcefully remove the lock yourself, you do not need to use a heavy tool to open the hatch. The door to the drum can be blocked for a completely insignificant reason, but vandalism will entail repairs to both the door and the locking system.
What to do if the washer hatch located on top is jammed? To open it and take things out, you can’t just remove the cover, as is the case with front loading; you need to entrust the washing machine to a specialist. Why? Only a master has an idea about the large number of laundry products, their configuration and repair. The top hatch is blocked most often when the drum does not turn over.
To return the product to normal operation, you need to:
- Moving equipment away from the wall;
- Disconnection from power and water supply;
- Heating element detection;
- Unscrewing and pulling out the heating element;
- Drum spinning.
The procedure must be performed as carefully as possible to prevent damage to the internal parts of the washing machine. If the tilt of the washing machine is sharp or too strong, then it is quite possible that in addition to unlocking the door, you will need to replace the pump, since it can be damaged in a couple of seconds.
Replacing UBL
If the lock is faulty, it all comes down to replacement. Restoring functionality does not make sense, because all damage occurs due to overheating.
You can carry out repairs yourself without involving a technician from a service center. To do this you will need: a slotted and Phillips screwdriver, as well as a little skill.
Let's take a closer look at all the actions:
- We remove the clamp. As a rule, it is a circle made of wire and a steel spring. We find it with our hands and pry it off with a slotted screwdriver. We tighten the clamp.
- We pull off part of the cuff in the area where the lock is attached.
- Unscrew the two screws that secure the lock.
- We remove the UBL by hand into the space between the cuff and the body.
- We pull the chip.
- We install a new lock.
- We put it inside the car and fasten the screws.
- We put the cuff back on, carefully working with our fingers.
- Reinstall the clamp. Here you will need the help of another person, or a second screwdriver.
Be sure to check that the hatch is closed. It should click into place.
Cuff with ul
Replacement can only be done if the door opens. Because the mounting screws are covered by the hatch. And if it is closed, then the replacement will not be possible. We will consider what to do if the hatch is blocked in another material.
How to unlock the lock during washing?
In some cases, it is necessary to urgently open the machine doors before the end of the wash. However, at the same time, water remains in the tank, and the system will not allow the hatch lock to be unlocked. However, as we know, there are no hopeless situations - there are ways not only to stop the washing process, but also to gain access to the contents of the SM drum. Similar actions will need to be taken if there is a long power outage. To unlock the lock mechanism during washing, you will need to follow certain steps. In this case, you should take into account the design features of washing machine models of different brands.
In different cases, the algorithm of actions will look like this.
In situations with Samsung products, the determining factor will be the device that controls the water level in the tank (pressure switch). Based on this, in the event of an emergency stop of the car, it is recommended to first completely drain the liquid, and only then open the hatch.
It is recommended to forcefully open the car doors after turning it off. In most cases, it is necessary to first drain the water from the tank. You should also remember that excessive efforts will only make the situation worse.
In the next video you will learn what to do if the washing machine door does not open after washing.
Adviсe
- If the door of the washing machine is blocked as a result of a power outage and water remains inside, then before you forcefully open the hatch, this water must be drained so that it does not get into the inside of the machine. A special drain filter is provided for this.
- If the washing machine is new, that is, the warranty period has not yet expired, it is better not to try to disassemble the unit yourself, but to contact the company’s service center directly (the fact is that most companies do not accept goods after repair for warranty service).

Manual, forced opening of the washing machine door
In any case, if the door of a Bosch washing machine does not open, in order to detect a malfunction, test it and subsequently repair or replace the defective part, you must first open the door in order to gain free access to the mechanisms of the unit.
This is not at all difficult to do after carefully studying the provisions of the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the repair of this model of washing machine. If instructions are missing, you should use the following rules, common to all modifications of such household appliances:
- Turn off the power supply to the device.
- Open the drain filter door. It is located at the bottom of the machine on its front part.
- In the picture that opens to you, find the cable (orange) intended for emergency opening of the drum receiving hatch. After locating the cable, gently pull it, thereby unlocking the door.
- First of all, handle any household appliances with care. When closing and opening the hatch of the washing machine, do not apply more force than is required. And don't do this unless absolutely necessary.
- Secondly. Do not load the maximum amount of laundry into the tank. Especially if it prevents the door from closing.
- Third. Respond promptly even to apparent operational problems. A minor malfunction that is not corrected in a timely manner can lead to larger and more serious breakdowns, up to and including complete failure of the entire washing machine.
If you are not confident in your ability to repair the device yourself, use the services of a specialist, which will definitely save you nerves, money and time.
The indicator signaled to you that the laundry has already been washed, but the washing machine door does not open? And he doesn’t heed the requests “Sim-sim, open up”? Don’t despair, and most importantly, don’t try to use excessive physical force on the machine! Better use our tips!
First of all, check to see if there is any water left in the washing machine after finishing work? If there is standing water in the tank, the hatch will not unlock to avoid a flood. This is true? Then your problem most likely lies in the fact that the machine does not drain the water: we discussed this issue in detail in the article “Wet business”.
- If there is no water in the drum, the wash has completed a full cycle, but the door has not unlocked, wait a while
: in modern machines, the unlocking command can be sent to the control panel within 3-5 minutes after finishing work. Therefore, first of all, just wait a little, and then try to open the door again. - If it still remains locked, it is recommended to unplug the washing machine from the power supply for 20-30 minutes
(be sure to unplug it!), then turn it on and try to open the door again. This measure is due to the fact that sometimes failures occur in the control board, and the signal to unlock the hatch does not reach the UBL (Hatch Locking Device). - If suddenly it is not possible to wait, there is an alternative option in case of such failures - start the washing program again
. The machine will check whether the door is closed: first it will unlock it, then it will lock it again and then begin the washing cycle. Without waiting for the moment when the door is locked again, interrupt the program (it is easy to understand that the machine has unlocked the door - you will hear a characteristic click).
Our advice did not help and your attempts to “free” the laundry remained unsuccessful? Then, most likely, the machine is faulty.
How to prevent the problem
Most often, the door of the washing machine does not open due to breakdowns. It will not be possible to completely protect yourself from such cases, because... main components are subject to natural wear and tear. Failure of one part will block the hatch.
However, you can reduce the risk of breakdown as much as possible. To do this, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s basic recommendations, incl. regarding loading laundry and choosing detergents. It is equally important to regularly wash the internal parts of the device, check the filter and contact customer service for preventative maintenance.

How to manually unlock the hatch door of a washing machine?
The most accurate scheme for unlocking your washing machine is in the instructions. But if the treasured document is lost somewhere on the shelves, try using the standard scheme:
- First, if you haven’t already done so, unplug the washing machine
. - Secondly, open the small hatch on the front panel (drain filter) and check if your unit has an emergency hatch release cable
. It is usually orange in color. If there is a cable, then you need to carefully pull it, and the hatch door will unlock. - If the cable is not in the indicated place, then to forcefully unlock the hatch you will have to remove the top panel
, then tilt the car back so that the drum, under its weight, also moves a little away from the front wall and frees up room for you to maneuver.
Next, you need to reach for the lock, find the latch by touch and move it to the side
.
Note! If you are not sure that you can unlock the door yourself, entrust this work to a specialist!

The design of washing machines is designed in such a way that the door opens easily. However, there are times when errors or malfunctions occur due to which the washing machine does not open. What to do, and will you be able to cope with such a difficulty on your own? This is exactly what we will talk about next.
Power outage
Power outages in residential buildings do not always occur as scheduled, so they are quite difficult to predict. If the plugs are knocked out during operation of the washing machine, or an accident occurs in this section of the network, or scheduled repair work is being carried out, it is likely that as a result of an abrupt shutdown of the unit, the hatch locking device will fail.
This is interesting: The washing machine hums during the spin cycle
When turning off the washing machine after a power outage, do not immediately try to open the door. Experts recommend waiting a while, in case the power outage was short-lived. If you know that the power supply will not be restored soon, you should try to open the door yourself.
Usually, the operating instructions for the washing machine tell you what to do if the door does not open as a result of forced locking. As a rule, there is a special emergency cable inside the drain filter for this purpose. By pulling it, you can unlock the hatch door. This cable is easy to identify as it is painted in bright colors - red or orange.
Emergency opening
After the water leaves the tank, the automatic door lock is released. However, in the case of manual draining, it happens that the water has not completely drained and the water control sensor does not allow the lock to be opened.
It also happens that due to a failure in the software settings, the lock gets stuck and the door cannot be opened even if there is no longer any water in the drum. Sometimes the cause is a mechanical failure of the latch.
Manufacturers have provided such options, so you can deal with a stubborn lock yourself, without the help of service workers. You can read about them and the necessary algorithm of actions in the instructions for the device.
But before using these methods, the machine must be unplugged. If it was not possible to drain the water first, you need to make sure that a huge puddle does not form on the floor after the emergency measures taken.
Emergency opening rope
Many washing machines come with a cable that can be used to open a locked door. You can find it at the bottom of the device, next to the filter.
Usually this cable is made in a contrasting color, red or orange, so it is impossible not to notice it. To outwit the lock, you need to pull it smoothly, without jerking.
Opening with a cord
If there is no cable in the car, but you have a thin synthetic cord or strong fishing line at hand, you can try to open the car with their help. This method is a folk one, so the possibility of its use depends on the design of the lock.
This method of breaking the lock will only work if the lock tongue snaps towards the body of the machine. If the tongue is directed in the other direction - away from the body or up - it will not be possible to open the door using the cord.
It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to understand exactly how the lock works when the door is closed, but if you don’t have time to wait for the locksmith and other methods don’t help, you can try this one. You will need to put the cord around the edges of the hatch around the entire perimeter and pull its ends up, as a result of which the cord will compress the latch and allow you to open the door.
Opening with a spatula
If you don’t have a cord at hand, but have a thin flexible spatula, you can use it. The principle of operation is the same as when opening the door with a cord. The end of the spatula must be inserted into the gap between the hatch and the car body and, pressing it, try to open the door.
Removing the panel
This method is practically fail-safe, but requires certain technical skills, tools and physical strength. In addition, to use it, you must drain the water from the unit by any available method. After there is no liquid left in the drum, the machine is disconnected from the network and the top cover is unscrewed.
In rare cases, the bolts can be removed using a standard screwdriver, but most often manufacturers secure the parts with special bolts, and to unscrew them you need to use TORX keys. The difficulty lies in the fact that even the presence of a key of the required model does not guarantee the ability to remove the bolts - their size may not fit the key model. Most often, manufacturers use the T15, T20 and T25 options.
Did the keys fit? Great. You need to carefully remove the top cover and then tilt the machine back slightly. This will allow the drum to move away from the hatch and make it easier to access the lock. After that, sticking your hand inside and pressing the latch is no longer difficult. When the door is open, the lid is returned to its place. But if you have doubts that you will be able to perform the described steps yourself, it is better to wait for the wizard.
Most methods of emergency interruption of washing and subsequent opening of the door are not only quite troublesome, but also unsafe for equipment. After pressing the “Start” button, the program installed in the machine begins to work and its sudden interruption is undesirable.
Of course, any manufacturer provides a certain safety margin in case of emergency situations, so a one-time intervention will most likely not cause harm to the equipment. But if you do this regularly, the electronic boards may fail, which will lead to a serious failure of the settings or a complete failure of the machine.
Therefore, it is worth asking yourself the question of how critical the situation is and whether emergency intervention is really required, since it can result in equipment failure and subsequent expensive repairs.
Examination
At home, you can only fully check the thermal UBL. To do this, you will need a multimeter, a screwdriver (slotted or Torx) and an electrical extension cord.
First, pull the device out of the case. To do this, remove the collar from the cuff and pull back the edge next to the lock. Then unscrew the two screws that secure the lock to the body and pull it out. We pull off the chip. UBL is ready for diagnostics.

Ask a Question
Don't forget to turn off the power to the washing machine before doing this work!
Standard marking of thermal lock: N,L,C. A resistor passes through N and L. There is a certain resistance at these contacts. The remaining couples are broken up. If the contacts are numbered differently, you can tell by the resistance.
Another option is to connect the light bulb alternately to the terminal contacts, turn on the CMA and run the program. On the contacts that go to the resistor, the light will light up brightly.
How to open the lid or hatch door in washing appliances of various brands
Each manufacturer installs a locking system for safe operation of equipment. We offer several options for opening the hatch in washing machines of different brands.
LG washing machine
Very often in machines of this brand the door does not open even after the laundry has already been washed and there is no water in the tank. In this case, it is necessary to figure out why the hatch was blocked. To achieve this, we are taking a number of steps.
- We check if there is water inside the tank. If there is water left, the electronic device will not give a command to unlock the lock. If the water has not completely disappeared, it is necessary to check the drainage filter, as it may be clogged with debris accumulated over a long period of operation of the equipment. Remove it and check for water in the tank.
- If the problem persists, then the drainage system is not working. In this case, you will have to call a specialist.
- The problem with the lock sensor can also be solved with the help of a specialist.
- If the door is jammed as a result of a breakdown of the locking system, it will need to be replaced. We discussed how to do this above.
Samsung washing machine
Basically, door blocking in machines of this brand occurs as a result of the fact that the washing program was not completed completely:
- when there is an imbalance of things;
- filling the drainage filter with debris;
- when the power supply is turned off during the washing period.
The reasons for the door jamming may be the presence of water in the tank or a broken hatch lock.
Ways to open the door if it is jammed
- To open the door on your own, you need to give the machine drum and internal elements time to cool (about 3-5 minutes), and then try to carefully open the hatch.
- Press the “Spin” or “Drain” button on the panel and start the program. 3-5 minutes after its completion, try to open the hatch. In some modifications of washing equipment of this brand, it is recommended to set the regulator to “Spin” to drain the water, and select the option “No spin”.
- Disconnect the equipment from power and perform an emergency drain. This must be done if the programmed system itself cannot cope with this and water remains in the tank.
If even after an emergency drain the hatch does not open after 15 minutes, then the lock in the handle is broken.
How to open the drum cover in Indesit machines
If the wash is completed, the water has drained from the drum, and the hatch does not open, you must unplug the cord from the outlet and let it stand for about 30 minutes. Then plug in and try to open the hatch again. The door should open.
Automatic washing machine Indesit
The second option is to try restarting the wash program. In this case, the machine system will check the hatch for closure: first it will unlock it, and then close it again, and only then will it begin to wash. Without waiting for the door to lock, you need to stop the washing process and open the hatch. To understand that the door is unlocked, you need to wait for the characteristic click.
Restarting the washing program will help unlock the hatch door in Indesit washing machines
Bosch
Washing equipment from the German brand Bosch can also break and the door may jam. If, after 5 minutes after the end of the washing program, the system does not open the hatch, then you must do the following:
- Look through the window and make sure there is no water in the tank (if it is a horizontal-loading appliance). Drain the water yourself through the drainage system. Then try to open the hatch again.
- If the door remains closed, you must unplug the cord from the outlet. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and then turn it on again. The door must open, as there could be a malfunction in the locking system and the signal did not arrive at the UBL.
- The third method is to restart the shortest washing program (express). After this, the hatch should unlock.
If the lock on the door breaks, you can open it yourself using the methods indicated above. And then simply change the lock, handle or locking system depending on the breakdown.
If the door on your Bosch washing machine is stuck, you can try draining the water through the drainage hole
Usually, doors in other washing machines - Ariston, Ardo, Candy, Whirlpool, Siemens and others - are blocked for the same reasons and the methods for opening them are carried out similarly to the above methods. Otherwise, you will have to resort to the services of professionals.
Unlocking secrets for different car brands
To successfully correct problems, you must carefully read the instructions for the washing machine, since equipment from different manufacturers differs in design.
Samsung . If such a situation occurred with a model of this brand, and draining and rebooting for 30 minutes did not bring the desired result, then there is a problem with water removal.
You will need to forcefully drain the water using the emergency hose, it is located next to the filter. In addition, especially for such situations, some models provide cables for forced opening of the door.
Additional information on troubleshooting problems with Samsung washing machines is provided in this article.
LG . You can simply unlock a car of this brand by removing the “Child Lock”. To reset, as well as to install, you must simultaneously activate two modes: “Super Rinse” and “Pre-Wash”. The cycle can then be continued by selecting the Start/Pause button.
Washing machines from LG are easy to unlock; to do this, you need to remove the “Child Lock” mode or hold down the “Start” button for a couple of seconds.
Bosch . To unlock a washing machine of this brand, press the “minus” button. This method will work if your model has plus and minus buttons on the panel.
If the key is lit on the monitor and there is no way to change the mode, you must hold the “Start” button for 5-10 seconds. After this, the hatch will open. Deciphering error codes and tips for repairing Bosch equipment are given here.
Electrolux . All machines from this manufacturer are equipped with a “Pause” function, using which you can complete the wash ahead of schedule. If the water level in the drum reaches a certain point and the temperature drops below +50 °C, the lock will automatically open.
Atlant . Washing machines of this brand are equipped with an emergency hatch opening system. For this purpose, a special cable is installed to open the door next to the drainage filter.
To unlock the Atalnt machine, you need to find an emergency release device for the hatch locking device. It is installed next to the water filter at the bottom of the device
Indesit . Owners of a washing machine of this brand should first check the presence of water in the drum. If it is missing, then you should restart the machine.
When you don’t have time and you need to quickly open the door, just carefully pull the emergency rope, which is located at the bottom of the unit.
If there is water left inside the washer, then activate the “Drain” mode. If this does not help, then you need to manually remove the water from the machine using the drain hose. After this, the machine will unlock automatically. If this does not happen, then use one of the methods described above to force the hatch to open.
Ariston . In units from this manufacturer, the door is blocked due to power surges or as a consequence after a power outage.
To deal with such a breakdown yourself, you have to remove the water. Here, either an emergency release cable or manual drainage of water will help you. Both parts are located in the lower right corner of the machine near the filter
The instructions contain Ariston error codes, probable causes of failure and possible solutions to the problem.
Selecting the “Baby”, “Silk” or “Easy Ironing” programs may cause the drum to slow down or the water may not drain completely. To correct the situation, activate the “START/PAUSE” button or duplicate “Easy ironing”.
How to unlock the door if there is water in the car?
In many models of washing equipment, the automation is designed in such a way that the washing machine does not open while there is water in the drum. There are several ways to drain the water manually. After this, you can safely open the hatch and remove washed items or laundry from it without any problems.
First of all, try to drain the water from the tank by disconnecting the drain hose from the sewer pipe. To do this, simply take the drain hose and lower its end into a basin, which should be below the level of the tank.
Try draining the tank through the drain hose.
If water does not flow from the drain hose, the next step is to drain the water from the filter, which is located on the bottom front panel.
How to drain water from a SM tank through a drain filter
Unscrew the filter, tilt the MCA and substitute the pelvis.
To drain water through the filter, tilt the CMA slightly and place a container under it
Wait until the container is full and screw the filter back on.
If even after this procedure there is still water in the drum, there is probably a blockage in the drain pump pipe. To get to the pipe, you will have to place the machine with its back wall on the floor. To avoid damaging fragile equipment, place something soft on the floor under the car in advance.
How to drain water from a pipe
Once access to the bottom of the device is gained, finding the pipe is not difficult. Unscrew the fastener, pull off the hose and drain the water. Return the SMA to its original position.
A plastic card will help
The alternative method using a plastic card is equivalent to thread. We push it through the side and press on the hook.
But it may not always work; it will be difficult to get into the pipe if there is a bulge in the lock body.
The map will run into it, you need skill.
Methods for unlocking and opening the door
When the cause of the malfunction is clear, the owner can try to unlock the door himself.
The necessary actions are indicated in the instructions and are available for execution.
Application of the cord
The cord is wound in the area of the lock behind the hatch with the free ends in the direction opposite to the lock. The cord is pulled in a lateral direction parallel to the hatch. The loop of the cord catches the lock tongue and it opens.
Emergency opening cable
Used similarly to a cord. Comes standard on most models.
Using pliers
You can use pliers to open the drum if the door handle has broken off. With their help they pull on the remaining fragment.
Qualified diagnostics are carried out by service specialists.

Method - turn off the power to the machine
Unplug the washing machine from the socket and leave for 10-30 minutes. Afterwards, gently press the door in the lock area and try to open the hatch again.
Note! This method will help if the reason lies in the breakdown of the UBL. It contains a thermal plate, which is deformed under stress, and thus the lock is locked. After disconnecting from the mains, power will not be supplied to the plate, and when it cools down, it will return to its original position. The lock will open.
Symptoms of a problem
The owner of a washing machine can determine if the lock is broken by the following signs:
- The equipment completed its work and turned off, but the hatch was still blocked. This indicates a malfunction of the UBL or central module.
- After selecting and turning on the mode, the door does not lock and the washing machine does not start executing the program.
- The washing machine displays a code or reports a UBL malfunction by flashing indicators in a certain sequence.
You can determine what the cause of the breakdown is using a multimeter.
Internal reasons
If the washing machine door closes perfectly, but the lock still does not work, the cause of the breakdown must be looked for in the electronic device of the unit.
Broken hatch locking device
The hatch locking device (HLD) is a complex mechanism that is responsible for keeping the door closed throughout the entire wash cycle. The device is under voltage for a long time, heats up and may fail during long-term operation. Unstable voltage can also lead to breakdown of the UBL.
Following the instructions, it is easy to replace the faulty device yourself. A new device can be purchased in a store or ordered online, the main thing is that the model fits the machine. The work is carried out in several stages.
- Disconnect the washing unit from the network. Make sure that the hot and cold water supply is turned off.
- Open the car door. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the three screws holding the locking device inside the unit.
- Remove the outer spring clamp, which is located under the rubber cuff. To do this, unscrew the rubber at the bottom of the drum, use a screwdriver to pull the spring to the side and pull the clamp out of the groove.
- Move the cuff and grab the UBL from the inside. You may need to push the drum to the side a little.
- Release the latches that secure the device cover and release the device that needs to be replaced.
- Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the lock.
- Connect the wires to the new UBL, close the lid and install the device in place, aligning it with the holes on the housing. Tighten the screws holding the device.
- Replace the rubber cuff, making sure that its edge fits into the groove all the way around. Install an external spring clamp (spring at the bottom of the drum).
After carrying out these simple manipulations, you should connect the washing machine to electricity, restore the water supply and check the operation of the new door lock device.
Debris entering the UBL
Very often, the washing machine stops locking due to debris getting into the lock device. Threads, hair, pieces of undissolved detergent, lime and salt that have accumulated over the years of operation of the unit interfere with the normal operation of the door blocking device.
To get rid of this malfunction, it is necessary to remove the UBL from the device body, clean the gaps and remove dirt that prevents normal fixation of the lock. You should also thoroughly clean the hole in the housing located in the place where the lock is installed.
Control module failure
The control module is a complex electronic device that is responsible for the operation of the washing machine. We can say that this is the “brain of the machine”. If all of the above reasons are considered and excluded, then the fault lies in the control module. The device can break down due to voltage surges, water getting on the board, burnt contacts, software failure and many other factors.
To analyze the cause of the failure, you will need special equipment. If you do not have experience in carrying out such work, you should not try to repair the control unit yourself. This expensive device can easily become unusable, after which it will be more advisable to buy a new machine rather than repair the old one.
A specialist will use a multimeter to test the board and decide whether it is possible to repair the device or whether it needs to be replaced. To troubleshoot the problem, you will need a complete diagram of the unit and the machine as a whole. Without an in-depth analysis, high-quality repairs are impossible.
Each owner of a washing machine decides for himself whether to carry out repairs on his own or call a specialist. If troubleshooting does not require special skills and complex tools, such as replacing a hinge or installing a new handle, then it is quite possible to restore the device to working condition at home. For more serious malfunctions, when it is necessary to replace parts hidden deep inside the device, for example, replacing the UBL or control module, it is better to contact professionals.
Limitations for self-repair
Compliance with basic safety rules will save you and your equipment from unforeseen emergency situations.
What should you absolutely not do?
It is prohibited to carry out any work on the washing machine if it is energized. Otherwise, you may get an electric shock. In addition, the rotating drum can cause injury to your hands when the hatch is open.
Do not try to forcefully open the door, especially if there is water left in the tank. Possible electric shock and irreversible damage to equipment.
It is not recommended to “decipher” the error code without additional study of the instructions, even if you are well versed in electronics, as you can completely ruin it. Be sure to read the instructions.
If an error code or the word “door” flashes on the machine’s display, then you should immediately refer to the instructions to decipher it
It is forbidden to break any wires if you are not sure of their purpose, and to correct module failures on your own (especially soldering anything, without experience with such equipment).
When should you call a professional?
If it is not possible to open the hatch using known methods without damaging the car, it’s time to call the specialists.
For example, the door handle broke. A user who does not have technical knowledge will find it difficult to select the appropriate part on his own.
A new handle for the washing machine hatch should be selected carefully, paying attention to the manufacturer and model of the machine on which you will mount the new part.
A specialist will be required if there is still water in the drum after the wash is completed. This may happen because the pump has failed.
In the worst case, the reason may lie in a failure of the board or water sensor. Faults of this kind can only be repaired by an experienced technician.
