How to deal with cockroaches in an apartment, the best remedy for cockroaches

Cockroaches are very tenacious creatures that are unpretentious to their living conditions. However, they are comfortable living next to a human home, but even better - inside. Uninvited guests love the comfort of cockroaches - warm, humid places with food present.

Variety of anti-cockroach products

Cockroaches are not an indicator of uncleanliness in the house. They can be brought from another home, a trip, even by mail along with a parcel. But most often they “come” themselves from the basement, entrance, from neighbors, or appear with new things in the house.

It is impossible to maintain perfect cleanliness every day, and cockroaches will quickly find crumbs and water on the floor. Physiology allows them to survive for several weeks without food, or to feed on paper, leather, wood or even fabric.

They can pretend to be dead. If you find a cockroach that is not showing signs of life, do not rush to throw it in the trash. You should flush it down the toilet to get rid of the parasite for sure.

What types of cockroaches are there?

There are several thousand species of longhorned beetles in the world. In apartments in our country you can find two types: the most common is red (Prussian) and black (kitchen).

Cockroaches living in apartments and houses: Prusak and black

The Prusak has a size of 1.3 - 1.5 cm and can go without food for up to 40 days. The kitchen one is twice as large, up to 3 cm in length and can live without food for up to 70 days.

Everyone knows about their resistance to unsuitable living conditions. And the fact that they can survive a nuclear explosion is not a myth. Therefore, some kind of hunger is not a barrier for them.

Houseplants and herbs that repel cockroaches

There are a number of plants that release substances into the environment that cockroaches cannot tolerate. In particular, these are odors, so insects leave the geolocation site. But remember that these herbs/flowers must be in the apartment at all times.

Pyrethrum

This is a powdery mass that is made from the inflorescences of chamomile. It is sold in pharmacies. It is considered effective because insects cannot tolerate this smell. To combat cockroaches, spread the powder under carpets and in areas where insects are abundant.

To avoid creating debris from the powder, pour it into gauze bags.

Bay leaf

Another enemy of cockroaches is bay leaf. It is laid out in the room, but to achieve a quick effect you can do this:

  1. Buy a bay leaf in the form of a branch (usually sold at the market).
  2. Light it with a match.
  3. Carry out the fumigation procedure for the room.

As a result of smoldering, caustic essential oils are released. Please note that the smell will last for 2-3 days.

Elderberry branches

Elderberry exudes an aroma that is unpleasant for insects, so it is enough to lay out the branches in the room where the red “guests” are located. There will be no harm to the human body, but the method itself is considered ineffective, since you will have to purchase a lot of branches, which should be in the apartment all the time.

Geranium

Not even all people like the aroma of this indoor flower, since it is specific. When growing it on a windowsill, be sure that the cockroach family will not stay in your home for long.

Additionally, geranium repels flies, mosquitoes, ants and other insects.

Other plants

There are also a number of medicinal herbs that make cockroaches escape from the apartment. Among them:

  • anise;
  • honeysuckle;
  • lemon balm and mint;
  • wormwood;
  • eucalyptus;
  • wild rosemary;
  • tansy;
  • chamomile.

As in previous cases, plants are laid out or hung in the room, fresh or dried.

How dangerous are they?

Cockroaches do not bite and are generally afraid of people. There is no visible harm, but the dirt they bring will not leave you in good health. They examine the garbage in search of food, the toilet in search of water, then they carry a bunch of different bacteria around the apartment on their paws, leaving them on children's toys, on furniture and, worst of all, on the table and cutlery.

For some people, the activity of insects may not have any effect, while others may be seriously poisoned. Bacteria are different, each body reacts to them individually, so you should not let cockroaches multiply and run wherever they please.

It is better to start baiting them in the first days, as soon as you notice them. Cockroaches live for approximately 6–8 months, and during this time the female can lay 320 eggs. The more of them there are, the harder it is to get rid of the brood later.

Features of insects

Despite their differences in appearance, insects share six common characteristics.

  1. Smell. They do not tolerate strong odors.
  2. Endurance. They can go up to ten days without water and up to 45 days without food.
  3. Sensitivity to climate. Air temperatures above 50°C and below 5°C are detrimental to cockroaches.
  4. Nutrition. They eat any leftover human food. In conditions of food shortages, they can feed on paper, soap and particles of human skin.
  5. Lack of mutual assistance. In cockroach colonies there are no mechanisms by which other individuals can be warned of danger.
  6. Habitats. Most individuals live in the kitchen and bathroom, where there is access to food and water.

How to find a nest of cockroaches in an apartment

Cockroaches themselves are timid creatures; they try to stay away from human eyes and direct rays of light. Strong lighting directly signals them about danger, so they try to stay in the shade and live in dark, damp, cluttered places.

There is clearly no fight against cockroaches

To find out if there are cockroaches in the house, go into the kitchen or bathroom in the middle of the night. If there are insects, at least one will still catch your eye. And where there is one, there is a whole colony. You can also find the products of their vital activity - feces, they look like dark brown small spots. They can be seen in different drawers, at the joints of doors, under the sink. When a colony of cockroaches grows, a specific unpleasant odor appears in the apartment.

Since cockroaches need darkness, warmth, water and food, the best places to hide are the bathroom, toilet and, of course, the kitchen. In the kitchen, they most often live under the sink, refrigerator, inside kitchen furniture and some electrical appliances.

Their flattened body shape allows them to inhabit cracks in baseboards, floors, behind hanging cabinets, in ventilation, near pipes, under bathtubs and even under wallpaper. If the house is old, then there will be several times more cracks and other defects suitable for living parasites.

Since the first time after the “housewarming”, cockroaches are very careful, you need to carefully inspect every corner (not skipping the bedroom, the passer-by) for the presence of them or traces of their vital activity.

To kill cockroaches in hard-to-reach areas, you can use a steam generator.

Prevention

It is not easy to remove the Prussians from the apartment, but a guarantee is provided by special sanitary institutions that carry out systematic work.

To quickly get rid of pests, you must follow the following rules:

  • if you were unable to remove the cockroaches on your own, you must invite the SES;
  • in the apartment it is necessary to equip the trash can with a lid;
  • at night the water should be turned off;
  • Water should not be stored in the bathroom, it should be dry.

Food must be placed in the refrigerator or kitchen table. You should constantly clean your apartment using detergents and adding disinfectant solutions.

It is necessary to pay attention to the condition of the ventilation grilles if cockroaches have entered from a neighbor’s apartment. Before starting SES work, the owner is obliged to move furniture away from the surface of the walls and remove carpets.

Following simple methods of protection against pests will help the SES to treat the premises in a short time without harming the health of the owner.

Types of poison

If you have to deal with such nasty pests as cockroaches, then your war may be long. It is important to take into account the fact that they multiply very quickly and, in search of a better life, spread not only throughout the apartment, but throughout the entire residential complex!

Before poisoning cockroaches, you need to talk with your neighbors about their presence in other apartments. If you poison only in your apartment, then later your neighbors’ cockroaches will crawl to you. Therefore, everyone needs to start poisoning parasites at the same time.

To combat small pests there are many different means, both professional and inexpensive folk. They may be in the form:

  • gel;
  • pastes;
  • spray;
  • powder;
  • liquid product;
  • tablets;
  • microencapsulated products;
  • chalk.

Each of the means is good in its own way. We will discuss all their advantages and disadvantages below, but it is important not to forget that cockroaches reproduce quickly and adapt to harmful substances.

Why are cockroaches difficult to get rid of?

During evolution, these animals have developed resistance to stress and vitality. Biological features help them cope with the most difficult situations. Here are the benefits of synanthropes.

  • Omnivorous. Cockroaches eat everything. They prefer our food: meat, bread, sweets, fruits, etc. But unlike people, insects are not picky. They are satisfied with rotten meat, moldy cookies, overcooked burnt eggs. Everything that people throw in the trash can is food for cockroaches. Insects eat soap, dried wallpaper glue, and the wallpaper itself. Human hair and animal fur are also a source of nutrients. Pests will find food everywhere. In a critical situation, people become food for them.
  • They go without food for months. It is impossible to deprive these animals of food. They find food in cracks, under wallpaper, between floorboards, in linen, etc. But if you managed to cut off the cockroaches’ food source, don’t rush to celebrate. In laboratory conditions, parasites survived without food for three to four months. Those. It is not enough to liquidate products for a couple of days or weeks to get rid of them. Cockroaches will disappear only after six months without food.
  • Ready to travel and remember the route. Cockroaches travel long distances (for such small insects). So, they crawl without problems from the lower floor to the upper, from one house to another, from the first house in the private sector to the last. They navigate in space and remember the path. And if they don’t meet better conditions along the way, they will return to you.
  • Adapt to toxins. A defense mechanism is written into the DNA of cockroaches. Detoxification proteins neutralize poisons that enter the body with food. Over millions of years of evolution, these animals have received billions of doses of the toxin. A poison that does not kill the parasite makes it stronger. The insecticide is processed, analyzed, and the body develops immunity. Resistance to this type of poison is passed on to offspring. If the ancestors of the pest were poisoned with dichlorvos, dichlorvos will not harm the new population.

But even knowing how to get rid of cockroaches, you are taking a risk. After all, parasites can enter the apartment again.

Cockroaches have a hierarchy. Hunters, educators, guards and scouts coexist in the colony. Spies look for locations to settle in, inspect utilities, hoods, and ventilation ducts. They rely on temperature and smell. The aroma of food from kitchen hoods lures the scout.

The scout's task is to find a way into the room with food. He studies the ventilation shaft, gaps and cracks in the walls, and openings for utility lines. Penetrating into an apartment you like, the pest leaves a pheromone trail. This is a signpost for other cockroaches. They find their way to the apartment using the pheromone path. They can also go outside, wander in search of food and return back.

Important : you don’t need hordes of cockroaches to infest a house. One female and a male of reproductive age create an entire colony in a month. Pests multiply and spread from the focal apartment throughout the house. They are especially dangerous when carrying out insecticidal treatment. Cockroaches escape from one apartment and end up in another. And then, when the effect of the insecticide ends, they multiply in two places. You need to get rid of cockroaches together with your neighbors. Discuss the situation with them and decide how you will deal with cockroaches.

Household products

There are many household products that are inexpensive but still effective. Before treating surfaces, it is important to fix the taps, remove food and wipe all surfaces dry at night, since water is the main source of life for any living beings.

Let's look at popular cockroach repellents and some of their varieties.

Pastes

Paste is one of the best options of all cockroach repellents. It is not addictive to parasites and works 100% percent. The result can be seen in the first days, and the paste will do all the work in 2 weeks. It needs to be applied precisely near the cockroaches’ habitat. Most of all such products contain chlorpyrifos - this is an active substance that belongs to toxicity class 4. A good option is Globol paste.

Global paste is a proven effective remedy for cockroaches, and also very economical

Gels

Gel against cockroaches is the most effective in terms of time, which is why it is very popular. It can handle an entire colony in 7-14 days, which is a very short time considering the fact that it sometimes takes months. Available in special syringes, and more often in tubes. Its soft consistency, more liquid than that of a paste, and a thin tube attachment allow you to apply poison even into the most inaccessible crevices. The following gels have proven their effectiveness:

  • "Raptor" - kills the nervous system of the pest. When consumed, the cockroach remains paralyzed and quickly dies.
  • “Dokhlos” acts quickly and prevents a new generation from appearing. Belong to toxicity class 1 or 2.
  • “Killer” - it will not destroy an entire colony, but one tube is enough to treat a room of up to 25 square meters. m.
  • “Sturm” and “Fas” - contain 2 active ingredients (two different insecticides), which increase the strength of the gel on insects.

Sprays

When treating an apartment with a spray, it is advisable to wear protective clothing and a mask to prevent the occurrence of allergic reactions in the body. Children and household members should leave the premises at this time. The advantage of sprays is that they act quickly and after 24 hours you can remove dead cockroaches, carry out wet cleaning and ventilation. Works well against small and medium-sized parasite colonies. The best sprays for cockroaches are:

  • "Raptor".
  • "Baygon."
  • "Raid".
  • "Combat".
  • "Gett."

Sprays to control cockroaches

Powders

Powder products have both their advantages and disadvantages. This is not the newest type of poison for cockroaches, but they are often overlooked, but in vain. They are very often used when cockroaches have just settled. Additional treatment is desirable, as parasites quickly get used to the drug. This is a completely safe cockroach repellent for pets and children. Powder is always much easier to treat hard-to-reach areas. The best powders are:

  • "Tornado".
  • "Clean house".
  • "Clean world".

Liquid products

Treatment against parasites with such preparations is considered the most effective, since the liquid gets into almost any cracks and nooks and crannies. Since cockroaches most often hide in cracks, it will be enough to simply douse their habitats. Before choosing a liquid poison, it is important to familiarize yourself with its mechanism of action to understand whether it is suitable for your case.

  • “Cucaracha” is considered a professional remedy and it is very important to study the instructions before processing. The second class of toxicity of the drug (destroys pests instantly) involves processing exclusively in protective clothing.
  • "Tsifoks" is an instant cure for cockroaches. The parasites either die or leave the apartment. One big drawback among all the advantages is the duration of action, due to which you cannot stay in the apartment for the next 48 hours after use.

"Cucaracha" is a powerful remedy against cockroaches. Available not only in liquid form, but also in the form of spray and tablets

Pills

The tablets are not only an effective poison against cockroaches, but also a bait for them. Often manufacturers themselves call them lenses. It should be noted that they are quite effective and easy to use. There are tablets that are safe for both children and pets. The most popular are the following tablets:

  • "Delicia" - from a German manufacturer. It kills not only adults, but also young animals, as well as eggs.

    Boxing bait "Delicia"

  • Dupont Advion - may be hazardous to children and animals. These are traps of medium toxicity. The insect crawls into them and then dies.
  • "Adamant Tab" is considered a professional remedy for cockroaches. It has a moderate degree of toxicity - it can be used independently only if the instructions are fully followed.

Microcapsules

Another type of very effective means is the strongest chemicals against cockroaches. The beauty is that after the liquid dries, it will not leave annoying insects alone. The most lethal means are:

  • "Get" It is good because it acts upon direct contact with the cockroach and upon ingestion. Microcapsules remain on the legs and are transferred closer to the colony, quickly poisoning and killing all individuals.
  • “Delta zone” is completely similar in its effect to “Get”. This product is odorless and completely safe for pets.

    Insect repellent "Delta Zone"

    Insect repellent "Lamda zone"

  • “Lambda-Zone” is a drug that is harmless to animals and children and is not addictive to insects. The substance itself is placed in nanotubes, and is located in the microcapsules themselves.
  • “Xulat-25” is often used by professional parasite exterminators. The liquid is concentrated, you need to dilute it with water, following the instructions from the manufacturer. It is very toxic to cockroaches, but is safe for people and pets.

Crayons

This type of poison was used several generations ago. In the fight against a large colony of parasites, it is practically useless, and in comparison with more modern methods of control, the crayons are significantly inferior and losing ground. The most commonly chosen crayons are from the following manufacturers:

  • "Mashenka."
  • "Clean house".

Causes and signs of insects

Insects do not always choose old, littered rooms to live in. Of course, food remains on the floor, lack of wet cleaning, and clutter create favorable conditions for their existence, but there are other, not so obvious factors.

For example, few people know that mustachioed invaders need water more than food: a cockroach can live for about a month without food, while without water it can live no more than a week. Therefore, to live, insects choose places where there is constant unhindered access to moisture. In the kitchen, this could be leaking pipes or faucets.

Insects cannot live long without water, so they try to settle closer to sources of moisture

You can bring uninvited guests into the house with your own hands, for example, along with groceries from the store or when moving from another apartment inside packed things. If the situation is favorable, the insects will settle in a new place and it will not be easy to remove them. When returning from travel, you also need to carefully unpack your luggage and, if pests are found, destroy them immediately.

The occurrence of cockroach nests is not always the fault of the apartment owners. The presence of unclean neighbors, a clogged garbage chute, the proximity of a basement or grocery store warehouse are objective reasons for the proliferation of pests.

Another common reason for cockroach infestations is baiting in neighboring apartments. Unfortunately, not everyone understands that such targeted attacks on insects will force them to migrate temporarily, but will not solve the problem at the root. Sanitation must be carried out comprehensively, simultaneously in all rooms of an apartment building.

Insects try to avoid people, so their presence in the house cannot always be noticed immediately. However, the following signs are distinguished:

  • waste products in the form of small black dots. They can be anywhere - on the floor, kitchen surfaces and even on the walls;
  • an unpleasant odor, the source of which is dead individuals and chitinous cover shed by insects;
  • nests with clutches of eggs located in secluded places - behind furniture, in cracks and corners.

The presence of nests and an unpleasant odor indicates that the invaders have firmly established themselves in your home and their population is quite large. In any case, you need to start fighting insects immediately.

Folk remedies against cockroaches

In the case when cockroaches are replaced in small quantities, you can also resort to effective folk recipes in the fight against them. There are a large number of them, but the best home remedies are the following:

  • Boric acid is a very effective substance and works quickly from the first attempts. You can make the product yourself using the following recipe: Hard-boil eggs. Grind the yolk, add boric acid. Stir. Roll the mixture into balls and spread around the apartment. The cockroaches will feel itchy and will soon leave the apartment.
  • Vinegar. Many parasites do not like it. Ammonia and vinegar are often used in spray form. You need to dissolve a little liquid in water and wipe the surfaces every day.

Methods of disposal

For a comfortable life, cockroaches need water, food and warmth. These are the factors worth influencing.

First of all, limit access to food: cover the trash can, sweep and remove all crumbs from the table and floor, and store all edibles in an airtight container.

Next, you need to block the paths to the liquid: wipe all puddles and condensation from the pipes, eliminate leaks, close the drain holes.

However, it is unlikely to be limited to such methods, and one cannot do without toxic substances and repellents. Here you can use purchased products or turn to folk experience.

One of the proven products that can be easily purchased in a store or online is the GEKTOR bait gel. She looks like this:

If the number of unpleasant neighbors exceeds reasonable limits or none of the methods help eliminate them, then it is better to contact a special organization. Disinfectors will treat your home with a professional poison and, with a high degree of probability, will save you from trouble for a very reasonable fee.

Traditional methods

People have been trying to get rid of these parasites for a long time, and therefore an extensive database of recipes has accumulated to solve the problem.

Interesting video on the topic.

Freezing

By removing access to drinking and food, you can deprive the Prussians of warmth in winter. Freezing is used for destruction.

Turn off the heating system, open all windows and doors wide and allow the apartment and everything in it to freeze.

For the creatures to die, the temperature must drop to -10 degrees Celsius and remain this way for at least three hours.

This method is difficult to implement in a city apartment, since individual heating in such rooms is still rare.

In addition, it is difficult to qualitatively reduce the temperature here. Nothing will prevent some of the insects from hiding deeper in the ventilation, hiding in holes on the warm wall, and returning when the procedure is completed.

But in a private home or country house, such an event can be quite effective.

Homemade traps

Help reduce the population. They are placed in places where parasites are concentrated: under the sink, near the trash can, under cabinets, near the ventilation hole. They will have to be checked frequently, freeing them from dead individuals and renewing the bait. These effective methods are recommended.

  1. Adhesive tape – double-sided tape should be attached to the cardboard. You can drop sweet syrup, jam or honey into the middle to attract barbels.
  2. Jar with bait - you need to pour beer or something sweet into a half-liter jar, and grease the walls with Vaseline or vegetable oil so that the reptiles do not get out.
  3. Plastic bottle - you need to cut off the neck of the container, turn it over and insert it into the lower part to form a kind of funnel. The delicacy placed at the bottom will lure gluttons, but they will not be able to crawl back out.

The results will be better if you set several traps at once.

Be sure to remove all edibles! Otherwise, the cockroaches will not covet the treat in the trap.

Poison

There are proven substances that cause longhorned beetles to die when eaten. This is for example:

  • boric acid - so that the insects eat the poisonous drug, it is better to make a special “delicacy”. The powder is mixed with boiled egg yolk or potatoes, rolled into balls and laid out along the route of the insects;

You can make a mixture of borax with sugar or vanillin.

  • Pyrethrum is pureed chamomile inflorescences. It must be handled in the same way as in the previous method - make poisonous balls.

Repellers

Prussians have a developed sense of smell, and therefore do not like strong odors. This can be used against them in order not to let them under your roof and create uncomfortable conditions for those already settled. For this purpose the following are used:

Essential oils – lemon balm, eucalyptus, geranium, lemongrass, lemon tree seed. Oil is used to lubricate drain holes, edges of trash cans, and surfaces near cracks in floors and walls. You can add a couple of drops to water and wipe all the shelves in the kitchen with the composition. And cotton pads soaked in aromatic composition can be placed in the ventilation hole to repel scout cockroaches.

Plants – You can use live plants in pots, such as geraniums or mint. It would be nice to hang bundles of dried herbs around the room.

Ammonia - dissolve a small amount of ammonia in water and wash the floors as usual. The smell will soon disappear, but a small concentration will still remain and will repel parasites. If there are already uninvited tenants in your house, then it is advisable to do this every time you clean. For prevention, this procedure should be carried out periodically.

Vinegar – all surfaces are treated with a solution of acetic acid, and you can use a sprayer to go over the walls. A significant disadvantage is the persistent aroma of vinegar, which does not dissipate for a long time.

Kerosene and turpentine are a desperate method, since not only insects, but also people suffer due to the unpleasant and pungent odor. When using kerosene and turpentine, it is recommended to leave your native place for several days. To make a repellent mixture, you need to mix kerosene and turpentine and coat all baseboards, cracks, areas under the bathtub and near the trash can. After a couple of days, it is advisable to repeat the procedure. After fixing the problem, you need to do some general cleaning.

Special means

Folk recipes are, of course, good, but often they do not bring the desired result and do not allow you to completely get rid of the dominance of voracious creatures. Specially developed chemicals are much more powerful.

The form of release of such chemicals varies:

  1. Gel – has a rather liquid consistency, which thickens over time. Gels are applied with a dotted line at points of accumulation and along the route of cockroaches. They are convenient to apply due to the fact that they are packaged in syringes and tubes. The price of such compositions is usually low, and they give a good effect.
  2. The paste is similar in consumer qualities to the gel, but is characterized by a slightly different consistency.
  3. Powder is not the best option if it is not possible to leave your home for a while, since in the process a suspension is formed that enters the lungs of people and pets. And it’s not far from poisoning. There are drugs that are diluted in liquid: they are safer and more convenient.
  4. Chalk is a compressed powder impregnated with an insecticide solution. They need to outline all the surfaces the cockroaches love. The insects eat the chalk and soon die. This product costs a penny, but it successfully copes with the problem.
  5. Spray is the most practical form, since it can be used to deliver poison even to the most inaccessible places. Cockroaches die quickly, and you can even spray the composition directly onto the insect.
  6. Trap - above we already touched on the topic of traps and talked about homemade devices. You can also buy ready-made ones. Their operating principle is the same: to lure parasites inside and prevent them from getting out.

Be prepared for the fact that you are unlikely to be able to get by with just one product. Most likely, a whole range of measures will have to be applied. And more than once. For example, poison the main part of the colony with an aerosol, lure survivors into a trap, or treat them with poisoned gel. And to scare away those who survived even after such measures, you can use ammonia and essential oil.

There are also ultrasonic repellers on sale that reproduce sound at a frequency inaudible to humans. But cockroaches hear him perfectly well, and they don’t like him.

If the colony is small and there are no other conditions for a happy existence, then the survivors can pack their bags and go in search of a better life. This method will also help prevent new uninvited tenants from moving in after bullying.

Cockroach traps

Traps are often used for prevention. Small houses are placed in dark and warm corners of the house. Cockroaches, having eaten plenty of poison, return to their brothers and also infect them.

Some traps have an adhesive base inside, from which parasites can no longer escape. This method helps to get rid of a colony that is just emerging.

Advice from housewives and specialists

Residents of high-rise buildings who have repeatedly encountered infestations of cockroaches, as well as specialists studying these insects, have several tricks in their stock that make pest control more successful. Use these recommendations:

  • be sure to use protective equipment - rubber gloves, a respirator with a filter, especially if you use powerful toxic chemicals;
  • many housewives claim that cockroaches do not like the smell of citrus fruits, so they advise placing lemon slices or orange peels right in the kitchen;
  • Longhorned beetles are able to quickly adapt to toxic substances, so when baiting for a long time, use different means;
  • the favorite place for cockroaches is the back wall of the refrigerator, since there are wires there and it is always warm (be sure to treat it);
  • In order to create the most unfavorable conditions for cockroaches, it is enough to know about their vulnerable spots - lack of water, so wipe even pipes with cold water every day, as condensation forms on them;
  • Another weak point is photophobia, but if you leave the lamps on at night, the pests will quickly get used to it;
  • the third critical indicator is the loose fit of the doors to the container, the walls of hanging and floor cabinets, where cockroaches like to hide during the day, so do not leave gaps, but spray them if necessary;
  • Boric acid is considered the best remedy, because red-haired “tenants” do not know how to adapt to it.

Before you get rid of cockroaches on your own, carefully study all the methods and means, find a suitable option for yourself and be sure to take into account the presence of children and pets in the apartment.

Experts recommend not to pursue expensive drugs, but to give preference to those manufacturers who have long enjoyed a good reputation.

Ultrasonic repellers

In some cases, such devices can be the most effective means of controlling cockroaches, for example, in grocery stores and apartments. Ultrasound has a negative effect on them. The use of ultrasonic devices has its pros and cons:

Pros and cons of using electronic devices

The characteristics state that humans and large animals do not feel any effect on the body. However, low-quality devices can negatively affect the human body, causing unpleasant symptoms such as headaches and/or insomnia.

Smell repellent

The principle of operation of repellent recipes is based on the non-perception of emanating odors by insects. The duration of action depends on the persistence of the fragrances, but if the fragrances are removed after the “barbels” leave, they may return.

Essential oils

Aromatherapy is beneficial not only for health, but also for killing pests, since they cannot tolerate strong odors. It is beneficial to use essential oils - they retain their aroma for a long time. What ethers are cockroaches afraid of?

  • geranium;
  • lemongrass;
  • eucalyptus;
  • vetiver;
  • anise;
  • mint;
  • Melissa;
  • citruses;
  • cedar.

Various methods are used to repel insects with essential oils:

  • wipe all surfaces with a solution of 1 liter of water and 15 drops of oil;
  • spray the room with a mixture of 0.5 liters of water, 10 drops of ether and 2 tbsp. l. vinegar;
  • use an aroma lamp;
  • place 3-4 drops on a small piece of cotton wool and leave it in the room where the cockroaches are located.

It is advisable to treat every room with ethers, since pests escape from the kitchen with an unpleasant aroma into a room where there are no odors. Refresh the oil once every 3-4 weeks, but treat surfaces every 4-5 days.

Ammonia

The liquid has a high level of causticity, due to which the evaporating substance instantly penetrates the respiratory tract of cockroaches, which forces them to quickly leave the area. In addition, disorientation in space and irritation of the mucous membranes occur.

If ammonia gets on the body of a barbel, it receives a severe chemical burn.

Ammonia evaporates quickly, so it lasts 40-50 minutes. Leave the room at this time. Treat daily for 3-4 weeks minimum.

How to use:

  1. Pour 5 tsp into 5 liters of water. ammonia - wash the floor, wipe all surfaces in the kitchen.
  2. Pour ammonia onto rags, place them in different places - under the sink, table, on wall shelves and cabinets, in the bathroom, etc. (you can insert them into large cracks).
  3. Pour the substance into all drains (toilet, sink, bathtub).
  4. Pour a small amount of alcohol into disposable plates and place them around the apartment.
  5. Leave for at least 2 hours.

Vinegar

Treatment with vinegar is considered the most budget option, but it only lasts 20-30 minutes. To quickly expel cockroaches, carry out procedures 2-4 times a day. The liquid is considered completely safe for the human body; it is not necessary to leave the room.

Rules of application:

  • when used as an aid, wash the floors with vinegar (5 tbsp per 5 liters of water) 3-5 times a week;
  • wipe surfaces with undiluted table vinegar, but do not forget that the substance spoils varnished and painted objects;
  • spray a mixture of 200 ml water and 1 tbsp. l. vinegar in places where there are large concentrations of pests.

Despite the safety of use, be sure to wear a respirator, since close contact of the liquid with the mucous membranes can cause irritation from the fumes.

Kerosene, turpentine and gasoline

These are aggressive liquids that make cockroaches quickly run away. The main disadvantage of their use is the unpleasant odor for humans and pets, but on the other hand, the persistence of the aroma allows you to treat the room only once a week.

When working with kerosene, turpentine or gasoline, act with extreme caution, as the liquids are flammable, toxic petroleum products.

Processing instructions:

  1. Eliminate all sources of fire - turn off the gas, turn off electrical appliances.
  2. Remove dishes, dishcloths, etc. from the room.
  3. Pour kerosene/gasoline/turpentine into a container with a spray bottle.
  4. Spray the liquid on the floor, walls, and area under the sink.
  5. Pour 200 ml of the substance into separate containers and leave in the room.
  6. Leave the apartment for a day.

After returning, open all windows and ventilate for 5-6 hours. Be sure to do wet cleaning using detergents.

Bleaching

Bleach has been used by humanity for decades as a disinfectant, but not all people prefer to deal with it. The reason lies in the pungent unpleasant odor. For cockroaches, this substance is a powerful repeller.

The peculiarity is that you additionally disinfect the room, and many pests not only escape, but also die, since bleach fumes entering the delicate respiratory tract of insects instantly cause irritation and swelling, which leads to suffocation.

Rules of application:

  1. Dilute dry chlorine powder with water so that the concentration is no higher than 2%.
  2. Wipe all surfaces, remembering to use rubber gloves.
  3. Wash the floor thoroughly.

It is not necessary to leave the room at this concentration, but if you make it higher, for example, 5-10%, then leave the apartment for at least 60 minutes.

You can also use store-bought liquid bleach, as it is chlorine-based. To treat all surfaces, dilute it in 5 liters of water (350-400 ml). Other options:

  • Spray undiluted white on areas where pests accumulate, cracks, holes, ventilation holes, and the area under the sink;
  • Leave the container with the liquid open overnight (make sure that pets do not enter the kitchen).

When baiting and repelling with bleach, treat once every 2-3 days for 3-4 weeks. And to prevent cockroaches from coming back to you, add whiteness every time you wash the floor.

There are situations when, for various reasons, it is impossible to call disinfectants. In this case, you need to at least consult with them about the required drug and subsequent actions, and treat the apartment yourself.

In very difficult cases, when insects literally fall from the ceiling, you need advice from knowledgeable specialists. Professional workers know how to act correctly in such situations. After all, sometimes it may turn out that not just one family needs treatment of an apartment, but all the neighbors on the floor or in the entrance.

What do Prussians look like?

The cockroach has a small red abdomen hidden under its wings, although the insects do not fly. Its length is 15 mm, its color is heterogeneous - from light brown to yellow.

The female is different from the male. Her body is wide, equipped with mustaches that allow her to communicate with the outside world. If they are damaged, the pest dies, because it cannot exist without food, water and control contacts with other individuals. A bite from cockroaches is impossible, because they have underdeveloped jaws.
