Urgently on a date: how to remove the smell of garlic from your mouth and hands?

Hi all!

Today I will talk about how to get rid of the smell of garlic in a variety of situations - if you ate garlic and now your breath smells, if you made a hair mask and now your scalp smells, if you cooked something, cut garlic, and now there is a pungent smell coming from your hands, and you urgently need to run to an important interview, etc.

As you can see, there can be many situations where the smell of garlic, pleasant in some cases, may turn out to be unnecessary and even detrimental to your reputation. Let's figure out how you can easily remove the smell of garlic both from your body and in the apartment (if necessary). Naturally, all the recipes under consideration for fighting this insidious enemy will be easily implementable at home, otherwise what’s the point of studying them, right?

Causes of odor

Scientists are still arguing about the exact reasons for the smell of garlic on the breath. Yes, yes, such a seemingly unscientific fact as the long-lasting smell of garlic in the mouth and on the skin has attracted the attention of chemists and physiologists.

A few words about the composition of garlic, so that it is clear what we will be fighting. This amazing natural gift contains large quantities of sulfur compounds: alliin and isoalliin.

If you have noticed, intact garlic has almost no odor, but when you start cutting it... But the fact is that when the integrity of the tissues is mechanically damaged, that is, when garlic is cut, the enzyme alliinase is released (by the way, something similar happens in fresh onions), which provokes chemical reactions and produces allicin, the main source of the characteristic “garlic” smell.

Why does this amber “stick” to a person so much that it lasts for a very long time? Research has identified several possible reasons:

1. The very first and also the simplest - pieces of food remain in the mouth, including garlic.

2. Sulfur-containing substances enter into a chemical reaction with bacteria living in the oral cavity, and thus the unpleasant odor “lingers” in the mouth.

3. Sulfur-containing substances, having entered the stomach in food, and then into the intestines, then enter the blood, which carries them throughout the body, including the lungs. And from them they are released along with the exhaled air. That is why it is quite difficult to get rid of the harmful stench, because it is everywhere, in all human organs. If you've been paying attention, even your skin can sometimes smell like garlic.

Why does intact garlic have almost no smell?

Garlic is probably in every kitchen and it doesn’t smell at all. But as soon as you cut a piece, a pungent smell appears that quickly fills the entire room. This is due to the protective function of garlic. It contains a substance called allicin; when damaged, its two enzymes that were previously separated are combined. A chemical reaction occurs, and we smell it.

Thanks to this protective reaction, it perfectly repels rodents and all kinds of mushrooms. People use this property to combat fungus and mold.

At the slightest damage to cells, an aroma is released. If the vegetable is cut into pieces or ground, the smell becomes much more intense.

Each cell of garlic contains alliin and alliinase, they are placed in such a way that they do not contact each other. When the cell is destroyed, they mix

Getting rid of bad breath

I think many garlic lovers (I am one of them too) have encountered the fact that the garlic spirit lasts for a very long time and can sometimes be felt even the next day. What can be done to reduce its manifestation? Here are some ways. They will help you:

  • fresh parsley (greens and roots)
  • walnuts,
  • almonds,
  • Pine nuts,
  • citrus fruits (lemon, orange, tangerine, lime),
  • fresh apples,
  • cardamom seeds,
  • cloves (seasoning),
  • cinnamon,
  • fennel seeds,
  • green tea,
  • herbal tea (especially mint),
  • fermented milk products (ryazhenka, kefir, yoghurts).

What to do with nuts? Chew them thoroughly, moistening them with saliva, until they turn into pulp and spit them out. Repeat this procedure two to three times. The same goes for seasonings - parsley, cinnamon, cloves, fennel and cardamom.

For citrus fruits, you only need the peel - you also need to chew it (if you have the courage), which cannot be said about apples - they need to be eaten whole in order for the smell to disappear successfully and quickly.

We simply enjoy drinking fermented milk products and green tea.

Well, in addition to traditional methods, do not forget about the standard “chemical” methods - thoroughly brush your teeth and/or use a mouth rinse/spray/mouth freshener. The main thing is that the packaging indicates that this product helps eliminate “fragrances” from garlic or onions.

The pharmacy method using the “anti-policeman” is also a good assistant in the fight for clean breath.

And finally, after all these manipulations, chew mint and menthol gum or candy.

My personal experience (I haven’t found such a recommendation anywhere yet) shows that a few shares of dark chocolate after a meal almost completely neutralizes unnecessary garlic flavors. Only chocolate must be of high quality, with a cocoa content of at least 50 percent.

The fight for fresh breath at home and on the street

What is the easiest way to get rid of garlic smell? Of course, while at home. A full range of products is at your disposal. The very first thing you should do is brush your teeth with mint paste. This does not always help, so to ensure a guaranteed result you will have to torture yourself. Take a bay leaf and chew it. It's not pleasant and even a little disgusting, but the refreshing effect is worth it.

If you want garlic but need to go visit soon, milk will help. Drink one glass of milk half an hour before meals. Now feel free to eat garlic but don’t overdo it, it’s still good to know when to stop. After consumption, yogurt, kefir or fermented baked milk will not be amiss.

If you are not at home, you will have to buy refreshing chewing gum, spray or mouthwash. To avoid spending money every time, learn to carry some of this with you everywhere.

Getting rid of hand odor

It is a little easier to get rid of the fragrance from your hands and body (well, anything can happen) than from your mouth, although the hydrogen sulfide components of garlic are well absorbed into the skin.

The simplest and first thing you can do is wash your hands thoroughly with soap (you can also use dishwashing detergent), and then wipe with fresh lemon juice. So, if you are a garlic lover, I advise you to always have lemon at home.

A good way might be to rub your hands with vegetable oil, such as olive oil. But if you don’t have one, then any will do. Only this measure is short-term - you won’t go on a date like that, in any case, after a few minutes the oil will have to be washed off (hopefully, along with the remnants of hydrogen sulfide compounds of garlic).

You can combine the first and second tips - wash your hands with soap, lightly grease them with vegetable oil, hold them there for a while, rinse them off, and then apply hand cream to your skin.

If you have milk that you don't mind, great. Rub your hands with lemon juice, then apply fine table salt, then wash off this mess with milk, and then treat your skin with vegetable oil.

Regular baking soda will also help. Mix it with liquid soap or dishwashing liquid and wash your hands with this mixture under running water.

Just like with removing bad breath, you will need a mouthwash. Rinse your hands with it - the annoying aroma should disappear.

Not after, but before

You won’t have to “wash” the garlic off your hands if the smell doesn’t stick to the skin at all.

  • To “painlessly” chop garlic, before starting work you should lightly grease your fingers with butter . But don't overdo it—if your hands become too slippery, you'll find it difficult to cook.
  • Olive oil will have the same protective effect .
  • Well, and of course, no one canceled rubber gloves . It’s not very convenient to work in them (especially with small garlic cloves), but after work you won’t have to wash off any smell.

Getting rid of odor from hair

If you made a medicinal hair mask that included garlic, your head will inevitably have a corresponding smell. In order not to scare away all the fans and not make life difficult for colleagues at work, you will have to work hard to remove this stench.

First, wash your hair with shampoo, then you will need apple cider vinegar (preferably natural). Mix a quarter cup of vinegar with one glass of water and rinse your hair with this solution. Then rinse your hair with cool water.

Essential oil can be your second assistant in the fight for a pleasant aroma. Any oil you like, but the most effective at combating odors are mint, lavender, orange and rose oils.

You need to first rinse your hair thoroughly with shampoo, then carefully apply a little oil to your hair and distribute the oil well along the entire length of your hair. It is advisable not to apply it to the roots, otherwise they will quickly become dirty and the hair will become heavy.

Leave the oil for 15-20 minutes, then blot with a towel, removing excess, and comb and dry your hair well. No need to rinse off. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated.

Another way is to use lemon juice. You need to take two tablespoons of juice per liter of water and rinse your hair with this solution.

However, the juice of other citrus fruits - orange and tangerine - acts similarly.

Mustard powder also helps well if you dissolve 1 tablespoon of the powder in 1 liter of water and rinse your hair with it. Naturally, all these procedures are done only after washing your hair with shampoo.

A combined method is to use several components. For example, slightly heat kefir (the drier your hair, the higher the fat content of kefir), add mustard and a few drops of essential oil. Apply this mask to your hair for 5 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

If possible, use herbal decoctions - nettle, burdock, chamomile - to rinse your hair. They also remove odor from hair well.

A somewhat controversial method is to apply colorless henna to your hair for five minutes. Unfortunately, unlike the previous ones, this method is not suitable for everyone, for example, if you already have chemical hair coloring.

Let's summarize

  • The most popular way to refresh the skin of your palms is lemon - you can quickly rub your hands with a piece.
  • Coffee, soda, milk, and “vigorous” mint toothpaste will also help “wash” garlic from the skin.
  • Well, people of science claim that foreign odors can be removed from your hands by rinsing your palms with a piece of stainless steel.
  • Alternatively, lubricate your hands with butter or olive oil before working, and the smell will not “stick”.

What is hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is one of the symptoms that appears along with one of the diseases. Sometimes excessive sweating is a consequence of a separate illness and is a physiological pathology at the genetic level. For all other cases, hyperhidrosis manifests itself in certain diseases.

Very often, this manifestation occurs when there is a disruption in the functioning of the endocrine system. The speed of metabolic processes changes, skin vessels dilate, the speed of blood flow increases, which means the heat exchange process will become different, along with which sweating accelerates.

The appearance of hyperhidrosis can be observed in various diseases, which are based on infection - these can be colds, pneumonia. In this case, along with the recovery of the body, increased sweating will also pass.

Fungal disease leads to the appearance of an unpleasant odor. Hyperhidrosis can be observed with cancer problems, cardiovascular diseases, malfunctions of the digestive system and other severe cases.
