In summer, water in the gas tank usually does not make itself felt. But in the cold season it can create a lot of problems for the driver. A car that has been parked on the street all night may simply not start. This is because moisture from the tank often gets into the fuel line and freezes there, preventing the circulation of fuel. Therefore, care should be taken to remove it from the system in advance - before the onset of frost. So how do you do this?
Most often, the situation with the accumulation of gasoline and water in the fuel tank occurs in the off-season and in the cold season. The fuel that returns to the tank from the system has time to heat up and gradually warms up the remaining fuel. The moisture that is in the atmospheric air (it enters through the neck cover) comes into contact with the elevated temperature and condenses on the walls. Due to the difference in density of the two fluids, excess accumulates at the bottom and can enter the fuel system.
Water entering the fuel supply system threatens, first of all, with damage to electronic dosing systems - sensors, as well as injectors. Therefore, it is important to promptly detect the presence of water in the tank, as well as remove it from there. To do this, you will have to separate water and gasoline.

How to clean diesel fuel from water
Method 1. You need to let the diesel fuel settle
After the water has settled (it is recommended to stand for at least 10 days) and collected at the bottom, the fuel can be drained with a hose.
Method 2. Filters
A fine filter, a fuel separator, and even a protective “mesh” can help in this matter (but not a water filter). Modern filters are capable of filtering out about 95% of bound and free water. The advantage of filters is the screening out of microparticles, the size of which depends on the filter model.
How to clean a plastic barrel of diesel fuel for a summer shower
- Place a piece of cardboard behind the stain on your item of clothing.
- Apply dishwashing liquid to break up oil and grease.
- Spray the baking soda solution to remove the stain from the fabric. For 1 liter of water add 2 tbsp.
- Use a toothbrush to get the baking soda deep into the fibers.
- After waiting five to ten minutes, place the item in the washing machine as usual.
To remove a large stain or a small contaminated area, you can use not only modern chemical products. The tools available in most farms will provide a good service.
How to clean paraffin from diesel fuel
The above filters will be ineffective due to the fact that the paraffin particle size can be less than 1 micron.
Method 1. Freezing
At low temperatures, paraffin will form “crystals” that are much easier to remove. The process can be speeded up by stirring/shaking.
Method 2. Additives
If the need to remove paraffin from diesel fuel is due to the sedimentation of paraffin at low temperatures, then adding kerosene (TS-1) or special defrosters from a store with auto chemical goods to the diesel fuel will help.
Fuel filter-separator, purpose, principle of operation
The operation of a diesel engine is greatly influenced by water entering the vehicle's fuel system. This liquid, when mixed with diesel fuel, can damage many elements of the fuel system in a short period of time. Installing a fuel filter-separator allows you to clean the fuel from water, extending the life of the engine and fuel supply system.

Purpose
Rust particles and various microorganisms in the separator water separator
The European classification system divides heavy fuel into several categories, depending on the temperature at which the fuel can be used. This classification is also used in Russia; according to it, fuel is divided into the following grades:
- used in a temperature range of at least 00C - summer;
- used at temperatures less than -200C - winter;
- withstands temperatures of about -500C - arctic.
Sometimes at a gas station they may fill you with summer fuel instead of winter fuel. Such situations arise due to the high cost of fuel intended for the winter period. Its production involves the use of complex technologies and technical processes that require certain capital costs. Therefore, the cost of these products is higher than that of the summer brand of fuel.
The main difference between the summer and winter classes of diesel fuel is the mass fraction of paraffin included in the mixture. If there is more paraffin than the permissible norm, then in severe frosts it will begin to crystallize, then its crystals will form larger clumps that can clog the fuel filter or elements of the fuel supply system.
Diesel fuel of any quality contains the following harmful impurities:
- Elements of organic and inorganic origin. During the production and transportation of diesel fuel, particles of dust, soot, paint, plant debris, pollen, and so on are mixed into its composition.
- Microorganisms. Microbes are found in water, but they can feed on diesel fuel and actively multiply in the fuel-water environment. A favorable condition for their reproduction is the presence of diesel fuel in a static state (without mixing). The result of the active activity of microorganisms is the release of a certain amount of acid, which contributes to the occurrence of corrosion of fuel tanks and other metal elements of the system.
- Water. The specified liquid can enter the diesel fuel during its transportation or storage processes. The formation of water in the gas tank is also facilitated by air penetrating into the empty gas tank and condensing inside. Water significantly accelerates the process of corrosion of system elements, leading to their breakdown.
You can clean diesel fuel from harmful components using the following devices:
- filter separator;
- heated filter separator.
Advantages from the use of these separators:
- Increasing the operating life of the engine.
- Savings on purchasing depressant additives. The purpose of these additives is to prevent the formation of paraffin agglomerates.
- Preservation of battery energy resources.
- Purification of fuel from contaminants and water.
We recommend watching a video about filter units equipped with a heating system:
Purification stages
Fuel filter - separator
The specified device operates according to the following scheme, including three stages of cleaning:
- The fuel enters the filter unit, then passing through special channels, it begins to spin like in a centrifuge. Water and mechanical impurities of pollution fall on the walls of the sump, then slowly flow down to the bottom. In this case, the filtered fuel enters the diesel system.
- During the second stage of cleaning, the fuel mixture rises upward thanks to a special blade system. After this, the flow direction changes. The flow begins to move along two blades. In this case, small contaminants are deposited on the flask, and larger ones fall to the bottom of the product.
- The final stage of filtration, in which the fuel is cleaned thanks to the filter element and enters the discharge line.
Using the described method, the filter separator cleans the fuel and improves its quality.
A filter-separator equipped with heating works on a similar principle, but at the same time has a special heating device. This unit is best used in winter; it allows you to continuously heat the fuel and prevents the formation of the crystallization process of paraffin compounds. The specified device can be connected to automatic or manual control.
This filter has special rods that are capable of releasing heat; with their help, the fuel temperature is regulated, eliminating the possibility of underheating or overheating of the fuel mixture.
What you should pay attention to?
When choosing a fuel filter-separator, you need to consider the following parameters:
- fuel consumption of the machine;
- characteristics of the heating element (power, required voltage for power supply);
- degree of filtration;
- device dimensions;
- what type of vehicle is the product designed for (trucks or cars);
- presence of a pump for additional fuel pumping.
The presence of additional functions affects the price of the product. In most cases, additional features are aimed at simplifying device maintenance, but not at the degree of filtration. Please note that these fuel separators can be installed independently, without the involvement of specialists.
How to remove sulfur from diesel fuel
As for the removal of sulfur (more precisely, sulfur compounds), on the one hand, this leads to more environmentally friendly exhaust gases (for this reason, the sulfur content in the fuel is standardized), and on the other hand, the removal of sulfur from the fuel reduces its lubricity, and To compensate for this effect, special additives are required. There is a clean and renewable solution - biodiesel: adding just 1% biodiesel to diesel can eliminate certain lubricity problems caused by desulfurization.

How to clean diesel fuel at home
Purification of diesel fuel is a technological operation, the need for which arises after it is contaminated with various impurities.
Loss of quality of diesel fuel due to its long storage is not a new problem, but quite relevant. Many vehicle owners, trying to insure themselves against possible price increases for this petroleum product, purchase it in large quantities and store it in garages. The saving measure is correct, but it can only give the desired effect when the necessary storage conditions for diesel fuel are fully met. In fact, containers may not always be sealed, due to which various mechanical substances penetrate into the oil product and it begins to come into contact with atmospheric oxygen. As a result, the fuel oxidizes, darkens and loses its performance properties. Driving with such fuel can be dangerous for the engine and fuel system of the car.
Specifics of operation of diesel engine injectors
Injector flushing should be done as often as possible to ensure stable engine operation and avoid financial costs for unforeseen breakdowns. To protect the injectors, it is also worth installing special filter elements that do not allow microparticles larger than 15 microns to pass through. These filters are installed directly in the injector itself, as well as in the fuel system of the vehicle engine.
Before flushing, it is necessary to prepare a special device that will supply voltage to the nozzle. This device consists of a 12-volt power source (power supply or “crown”), a switch and wires.
The wires from the power supply must be connected to the switch, and two free leads must be made from it, which will be attached to the injector contacts. The entire system must supply current to the injector when the switch button is pressed.
Along with this device, you only need carburetor cleaning fluid. An important point when choosing such a liquid is the diameter of the extension on the cap. It should fit tightly into the nozzle hole, forming a tight connection. The cost of all equipment will not exceed 100 rubles.
Current standards
Each type of diesel fuel requires a certain level of content of various elements , including sulfur and sulfur compounds. In addition to many other characteristics (cetane number, distillation temperature, kinematic viscosity, etc.), the purity class, that is, not exceeding the standard of impurities or pollutants, is a key indicator of the quality of diesel fuel.
Today, experts note the low quality of diesel fuel produced by domestic manufacturers.
According to European standards , in first class diesel fuel the maximum permissible sulfur concentration should not exceed 50 mg/kg of product. However, despite this, manufacturers in the CIS countries allow the amount of sulfur in diesel fuel to be up to 0.01%. This causes fuel contamination and engine problems.
Cleaning diesel fuel at home
It is not difficult to notice a loss in the quality of a petroleum product, but how to correct the situation so as not to lose the money previously invested in the purchase? Using special cleaning equipment for relatively small batches of product is not economically feasible, so you will have to think about cleaning diesel fuel at home. To do this, you can use several methods at once. They are not particularly original or innovative, but in many cases they can help.
Diesel fuel purification process
Diesel fuel can be purified using a simple separator that operates on the principle of a centrifuge. This device was very popular at one time, but over time it was replaced by fuel and oil filters, which provide a higher quality of cleaning. Diesel fuel is forced through a separator, after which it is allowed to settle for a certain time. An indicator of the beginning of further actions is the appearance of a cloudy precipitate. Next, you need to slowly pour the fuel through cheesecloth into clean, washed dishes.
Diesel fuel is purified by freezing with sulfuric acid . Considering its features, this method can be considered quite risky. But since such cleaning is theoretically possible, we cannot help but mention it. To implement this approach, sulfuric acid is very carefully poured into a container with diesel fuel. The ratio is 1:10. After this, the container is shaken (shaken) and the resulting mixture is allowed to settle. A day is enough. If everything was done correctly, then after settling at the bottom of the container you can see a dark sediment. After this, you need to perform the already familiar procedure: pouring the fuel into a clean container through gauze.
As a result of a chemical reaction during oil refining in 1896-1897, a product was obtained called diesel, after the name of the German scientist Rudolf Diesel.
The third method is the simplest. But at the same time it is also financially costly. It consists of adding special additives designed to increase the cetane number, displace water from the fuel, clean injectors, prevent carbon deposits, condensation formation, etc.
We fight old pollution
In cases where it was not possible to get rid of diesel fuel from clothes in the shortest possible time, then you should resort to one of the methods described below:
- Start the machine in intensive wash mode and high temperature. First add stain remover to it. To enhance the effect, you can apply a little stain remover to the necessary areas before washing and wash them.
- We remove diesel fuel from durable fabrics using gasoline. To do this, apply a little gasoline to a cotton cloth and rub the stain. Repeat the procedure until the dirt is completely destroyed and change the cloth if necessary. The main disadvantage of this method is the unpleasant, toxic odor that gasoline has. It is best to carry out such procedures in the fresh air, and then use tips for removing fuel odor from clothes.
- Dilute ordinary ammonia (as an analogue - ammonia) with water in a ratio of at least 1/7 and soak the fabric in it. It takes about 12 hours to completely remove a diesel stain. This method is not recommended for items that are too bright, as they may fade after washing.
- Diesel stains are easily removed using high temperatures. To clean, use an iron and paper (or several napkins), which you place over the stained area. Iron with a hot iron over the stain. This will help transfer traces of diesel fuel onto the paper.
Industrial cleaning methods
Partial purification of diesel fuel can be achieved through a mesh filter . It can trap particles larger than 80 microns. If the size is smaller than specified, then impurities can easily pass through the filter, which still leads to complete contamination of the diesel fuel.
Diesel fuel can be purified through filtration . Carrying out this operation is very important because it allows you to clean the fuel from dust that may enter the tank during refueling. The presence of dust leads to a lack of fuel in the combustion chamber and a subsequent drop in engine power. Structurally, filters are made of a housing in which the filter element is placed. More complex models, in addition to solid particles, can also retain water, which improves the performance of diesel fuel.
Do I need a separator for heated diesel fuel and the price issue?
Difficulty starting the engine, interruptions in operation and a drop in power in winter - all these factors have long been known to owners of diesel engines not only in the northern regions of Russia, but also in its central regions. In most cases, the reason is the quality and seasonality of the fuel.
An effective way out of this situation is considered to be the organization of heating of the fuel system. In this regard, filter separators with heating elements have performed well. Moreover, it is quite possible for an experienced motorist to install a separator for diesel fuel with his own hands.
Diesel fuel purification equipment
Diesel fuel purification unit UVR GlobeCore
Recently, modern equipment manufacturing companies have taken leading positions in this market thanks to the constant improvement of existing installations and the introduction of new developments. Such enterprises include the company GlobeCore , which offers equipment that has proven its effectiveness in solving such problems as diesel fuel purification .
In addition, the company enjoys authority and trust among factories that use modern technology.
The presented range of high-quality products includes multifunctional units for purifying diesel fuel. Enterprises operating in the oil refining industry are increasingly including in their production process flow a vacuum regeneration and purification unit for clarification and purification, as well as removal of aromatics from fuels and petroleum products. The equipment does not significantly, but reduces the sulfur level in the fuel. GlobeCore brand UVR installation ensures the highest degree of purification of diesel fuel after its exhaustion. As a result, the mixture acquires a relatively higher class of purity, comparable to the original one, remains stable and does not undergo oxidation over a long period. In fact, the UVR installation for purifying diesel fuel returns its original properties and characteristics, allowing re-use in production.
This equipment has the following advantages:
- the ability to work in automatic and semi-automatic mode, which eliminates the constant presence of an operator. Human participation is only necessary when starting and stopping the UVR installation, as well as replacing the adsorbent;
- minimal energy consumption;
- versatility of application. Using UVR installations, it is possible to purify not only diesel, but also heating fuels, gasoline, kerosene, and various mineral oils (transformer, turbine, industrial, etc.). The transition from one processed raw material to another does not require complex manipulations. It is enough to simply switch the installation to manual control mode, pump out the remaining oil products from the system, and also replace the adsorbent and filters.

Sources of the problem of difficulty starting a diesel engine in winter
Despite the fact that Russia has switched to the European classification system, among consumers heavy fuel is divided according to Soviet standards into the following grades:
- Summer - for use at ambient temperatures not lower than 0°C.
- Winter - used at temperatures not lower than -20°C.
- Arctic – used at temperatures down to -50°C.
The situation with energy-laden fuel at our gas stations is gradually returning to normal. However, some gas stations can still sell summer diesel instead of winter. This is explained simply - diesel fuel for winter is more expensive, because more complex technological processes are used when refining oil. The consistency after distillation consists of hydrocarbons:
- naphthenic;
- aromatic;
- paraffin
It is the concentration of the last component that determines the limit of the onset of crystallization, which for summer fuel starts already at 0°C.
As the temperature decreases, the fuel becomes cloudy, which indicates the transition of paraffins to a solid state with subsequent precipitation.
But this stage is not yet dangerous until the agglomeration process begins, when paraffin molecules combine into large clumps.
Solutions
As soon as the agglomerates are commensurate with the micropores of the fine filter element, the filter will be blocked, after which the supply of fuel will become impossible.
A rational way out of this situation would be to install additional equipment.
This, of course, leads to financial costs, but a heated diesel fuel separator and the cost of repairing a power unit are incommensurable things.
There is also a technique for using depressant additives that prevent paraffin crystals from forming large agglomerates. But upgrading the fuel system using a separator filter looks more economical:
- increase in engine service life;
- savings on the purchase of additives;
- saving battery energy resources.
A filter separator with a heating system allows you not only to leave your car in an open parking lot in winter, but also eliminates cold start problems. For commercial vehicles, this also means timely delivery of cargo, and therefore no material losses.
The tasks of the separator filter and the principle of its operation
Some motorists confuse a mechanical separation device with a filter settling tank or a coarse filter.
Mechanical cleaning allows you to isolate foreign impurities in heavy fuel and prevent them from entering the vehicle’s fuel system.
Another important fact: installing a separator for filtering diesel fuel is quite possible with your own hands, without the cost of specialist work.
The main functions of the separation device are as follows:
- Defect of foreign particles.
- Release of water from the emulsion.
The device is capable of removing up to 99% of water and up to 95% of mechanical impurities from diesel fuel, even if the concentration of these components is quite high. Heating additionally prevents crystallization of water and waxing of diesel fuel at low temperatures. The fuel purification process follows the following scheme:
- Centrifugal purification of the emulsion using a depressurizer or a stationary centrifuge, depending on the model. At this stage, water and solids settle in the settling flask.
- An intermediate process of coalescing when changing the direction of flow. Its essence is to separate a smaller fraction than at the first stage of purification.
- Final filtration of fuel from microparticles through a corrugated cartridge with subsequent supply to the fuel pump.
The presence of a heating element contributes to high-quality cleaning - paraffins do not crystallize, but dissolve in the emulsion. Thanks to this, fuel system components can operate in comfortable conditions, which extends their service life.
What should you consider when choosing a separator filter?
To ensure optimal operation of the water separator, it is necessary to take into account the technical parameters of the individual motor. First of all, pay attention to the following factors:
- Average fuel consumption of a car.
- Supply voltage and power of the heating element.
- Availability of heating switching control and water sensor.
- Availability of an additional fuel pump.
- Filtration fineness (5-30 microns).
- Product dimensions.
The presence of additional options, of course, affects the price of a separator for diesel fuel with local heating, but they also make servicing the unit easier.
In a store, unscrupulous or incompetent sellers can “sell” an expensive device, citing the high quality of cleaning. At the same time, the fact that the model is adapted to the fuel consumption of a truck, but not that of a passenger car, is absolutely not taken into account.
But with a large working cross-section and low flow rate, there will be no centrifugal effect, that is, the filter-separator will turn into a regular sump.
Another important point is the pore size of the filter element. Some manufacturers recommend using components with a filtration fineness of 2 microns for the summer, and 10 for winter.
It would seem that the smaller the pores, the better the fuel is cleaned, but they also become dirty faster, thereby increasing the hydraulic resistance of the system.
In any case, before purchasing, you should independently carefully study the manufacturer’s recommendations and tables of correspondence of filtering devices to certain engines.
What separators for heated diesel fuel can be found in Russia and the price of some models
Over the past decade, the range of models for active purification of heavy fuels has expanded significantly. Today on the market there are products from well-known manufacturers:
- Baldwin Filters (USA);
- Stanadine (USA);
- Griffin Group (Singapore);
- Cummins Filtration (USA);
- Willibrord Lösing Produktion GmbH (Germany);
- Parker-Racor (USA);
- Mann+Hummel (Germany).
It is worth noting the trend that the domestic auto industry has adopted - the wider introduction of fuel separator purification devices with built-in heating. For example, Separ 2000 and Mann-Filter filters have found their place in the fuel system of KAMAZ vehicles of the new family.
Experienced motorists can easily install a separator for filtering diesel fuel with their own hands, thereby creating favorable conditions for the operation of the power plant.
Let's look at several popular models that have proven their effectiveness in use in passenger cars, SUVs and minibuses.
Dahl 65
Products from Baldwin Filters occupy a leading position in terms of the number of uses on equipment with a diesel unit. The device is actively installed on cars where:
- limited engine compartment space;
- low consumption economical engine.
The operating principle of this filter-separator is practically independent of the intensity of fuel consumption. The separation of fractions occurs on the surface of the depressurizer cone. The degree of purification can be adjusted by selecting a replacement filter - 2, 10, 30 and 60 microns.
The heating element is powered from the on-board 12 or 24 Volt network. The heating process is controlled by a special relay:
- the element is switched on at a fuel temperature below +5°C;
- The device switches off at a temperature of +10°C.
The throughput capacity of the Dahl 65 fuel purification device is 76 l/hour, so the manufacturer recommends equipping it with cars with power up to 120 hp. The average cost of the model is 21,000 rubles.
Separ -2000/5/50H
The German concern Willibrord Lösing Produktion GmbH has long been known among professional drivers for its separation devices under the Separ -2000 brand. Model 2000/5/50H is designed for the fuel system of engines up to 250 hp. and has a throughput of 5 liters per minute. Index H indicates the presence of heating.
The base price of a separator for purifying diesel fuel with heating is in the range of 28,500 - 30,000 rubles. In addition to the product, the kit includes:
- 30 micron filter element;
- warning lamp;
- circuit breakers;
- wires;
- relay.
The patented fraction separation mode is implemented due to the centrifugal effect, which depends on the intensity of the fuel flow. It is impossible to completely get rid of this dependence, if only for the reason that fuel consumption varies depending on engine operating modes.
A pre-start fuel heating mode is possible for 3-5 minutes after the ignition is turned on. Due to its large dimensions, this separator filter is rarely used in passenger cars.
PreLine 150
One of the most compact separators from the German manufacturer Mann+Hummel, designed for motors with power up to 250 kW. The fuel flow for separation does not exceed 2.5 liters per minute. Despite its small size, the sample does not lag behind its more powerful counterparts under the indexes 270 and 420 in terms of functionality:
- booster pump for releasing air when replacing the filter element;
- chamber for settling water and dirt;
- drain plug;
- Possibility of connecting a water indicator sensor.
The DH32 heating element operates from a standard voltage of 9-32 V and provides a power of 190 W. Automation turns on the heating system at -4°C and turns off at +20°C. The cost of PreLine 150 in Russian auto stores is in the range of 13-15 thousand rubles.
If desired, you can replace the drain element in a plastic case with a larger 350 W thermocouple in an aluminum shell. Such products under the PS-100 and PS-200 brands are made by the Belarusian plant Nomakon.
How to install a separator for filtering diesel fuel with your own hands?
A device for filtering diesel fuel is mounted on the supply line between the tank and the fuel pump. At the same time, manufacturers recommend removing the standard coarse filter if this does not violate the warranty terms.
It is advisable to install a separator for filtering diesel fuel with your own hands at the same level as the fuel pump. It is also preferable for the filter inlet to be level with the top line of the tank.
However, it is not always possible to meet these requirements, so options are possible in which the separator filter is located above or below the fuel tank.
In each of these cases, it is necessary to install a shut-off valve in the line between the tank and the separation device.
Schematically, the installation process consists of several transitions:
- Selecting a location and drilling installation holes.
- Fixing the device in the selected location using bolts.
- Connecting fittings and pipes.
- Eliminate sharp bends in fuel lines.
- Laying 2.5 mm² wiring and connecting the fuse, controls and alarms in the cabin, as well as connecting power to the heating element.
- Fill the filter with fuel and test run the power unit.
Important Tips
- To secure fuel hoses, use only metal clamps.
- To prevent damage, the wiring should be laid in a corrugated pipe.
- It is recommended to check the presence of sludge daily, and in cold weather drain the condensate after each trip.
- The filter element is replaced after 15-20 thousand km, but if necessary, the time frame can be reduced.

How to separate gasoline and water: methods and nuances of the procedure
- To make it easier to remove diesel fuel stains, generously sprinkle the contaminated area with table salt and rub it in with a brush or rag. It takes time for diesel fuel to be absorbed. This may take about 40 minutes. Please ensure that diesel fuel does not come into contact with other things, as such stains are very easily transferred.
- Detergents. You can remove a solarium stain using dish soap. It is necessary to dilute a small amount of detergent with warm water and rub into the contaminated area of the fabric. Be sure to ensure that your items are suitable for this stain removal method. Some strong detergents can permanently damage your items.
- Using a simple mixture of lemon juice and vegetable oil to remove diesel stains, it is possible to remove very strong stains. To do this, mix oil and lemon juice (citric acid concentrate will also work) in equal parts, and then rub the resulting solution into the stain using a cotton swab or cloth. After 10 minutes, the clothes must be washed.
- Hydrogen peroxide purchased at a pharmacy removes fresh diesel stains from fabric. To enhance the effect, you can add it to a mixture of lemon juice and oil.
- Hand paste. All auto mechanics know that cleaning paste can be used not only on hands, but also on clothes. Rub the paste into the stain for about 15 minutes, and then rinse the item well.
- A miracle remedy that our grandmothers used is a mixture of laundry soap, soda and detergent. Mix all parts equally. For convenience, grind the laundry soap on a grater and fill all the ingredients with warm water.
- Soak the stained item for several hours and then wash it using powder and conditioner. This method can be used to remove not only diesel fuel stains, but also many other contaminants.
The main method of separation is based on the physicochemical properties of these two liquids. There are several of these properties:
How to clean diesel fuel?
Despite the fact that modern cars have special mesh filters in tanks, as well as fine fuel filters, diesel fuel can clog the injectors in the engine, which leads to unstable operation of the latter.
1. How to clean diesel fuel - at large enterprises using equipment running on this type of fuel, it is advisable to use the separation method to clean diesel fuel. Cleaning diesel fuel is carried out in a special centrifuge; under the influence of centrifugal force, all solids, as well as water, settle in the center of the machine.
Cleaning fuel at home
And so let's get started, is it possible to clean fuel at home? There are several ways to purify diesel fuel.
First. To purify diesel fuel, you need to buy a separator that works on the principle of a centrifuge. It is used to purify diesel fuel and not only for fuel but to purify other liquids from the heaviest elements. A very similar method was often used in the USSR, due to the fact that at that time good quality fuel and oil filters were not yet produced. The most famous separator, which was installed on the ZIL 130 car.
Now let's look at how this device works. We fill in the diesel fuel, run the diesel fuel through it, after which the diesel fuel needs to sit for a while until a slightly cloudy residue appears that forms on the vessel. After this, through a shallow ladle, or even better, through cheesecloth, slowly pour diesel fuel into cleanly washed dishes.
Now the second method. Freezing method with sulfuric acid.
This requires sulfuric acid. It is necessary to very carefully pour the sulfuric acid into a container (barrel) with diesel fuel, the ratio should be 1 to 10. Do not forget that sulfuric acid is a very dangerous product. Therefore, sulfuric acid must be poured in a very thin stream. After the sulfuric acid has entered the diesel fuel, the barrel must be shaken (shaken) for several minutes, after all this the barrel of fuel must be allowed to stand for about a day. After all this has settled, a cloudy (dark) sediment should form at the bottom of the barrel. Next, we also pour the fuel into a clean container through cheesecloth.
Third way. Probably the easiest to use, but not the cheapest. Currently, our stores sell a lot of various additives for diesel fuel and gasoline, which are capable of increasing the octane number in diesel engines with a cetane number, very well displace water from the fuel, clean injectors, and are good at preventing soot deposits, condensation formation and fuel thickening in winter.
Well, the fourth way. How to get rid of water in fuel. This method is very suitable in winter in good frost. What is needed for this? We pour diesel fuel into the container and leave it in the cold for some time, depending on the frost; in the cold, as you know, water freezes. And also pour into a clean, dry container through gauze.
All these procedures can be repeated with gasoline, kerosene and other flammable materials.

Methods for purifying diesel fuel from water, including its removal from diesel fuel at home
Many people regularly face a situation where they need to clean diesel fuel from water. In addition, this situation is not alien to large companies, whose volumes of stored fuel can exceed tens of tons. In each individual case, you need to choose a method that will help achieve the desired result and will not lead to particularly large costs.
Ways to remove water and air from diesel fuel
There are several common methods for purifying diesel fuel from water. Each of them is effective, but also has special weaknesses:
- settling is suitable for preparing for work and removing the main set of impurities;
- Fiber and coalescent filters remove almost all water and are suitable for home use;
- vacuum spray drying removes all water, but the process is quite long and cannot cope with mechanical impurities;
- synthetic zeolites (molecular sieves) effectively remove water, but their use requires particularly precise selection of temperature conditions.
Proper purification of diesel fuel is often carried out in several stages, thereby achieving complete removal of all unwanted impurities, including water, air and heavier fractions. Such fuel can then be used without restrictions.
Oil refineries use a special purification system based on destabilization of the emulsion. The process uses the following approaches: electrical, centrifugal, gravity and chemical, with additional filtration at the very end.

The main advantages of MPM "DITO" are:
- The ability to completely remove water, mechanical impurities and resins from the fuel immediately before refueling a vehicle or filling a fuel tanker. Many motor transport, construction, mining and other industrial enterprises, oil depots, mobile refineries and gas stations need this kind of diesel fuel purification. MMM "DITO" is equipment that has proven itself in practice. This production complex ensures the purification of diesel fuel and guaranteed improvement of its quality to European standards.
- Purification of diesel fuel in a small-sized production module "DITO" allows you to improve the basic physicochemical, operational and environmental parameters of diesel fuel, for example, ash content, coking capacity, filterability, cetane number, lubricating properties. As a result, the efficiency and service life of fuel equipment increase significantly. Thus, using diesel fuel purified using our technology, vehicle owners have the opportunity to reduce their costs for the purchase of fuel and repair work.
- The technology for purifying diesel fuel in the DITO MPM makes it possible to obtain winter diesel fuel from summer fuel and save significant money on this.
- The ability to reduce the content of resins by 10 times and mechanical impurities by 50 times as a result of cleaning makes it possible to improve the color of the fuel by 2–3 times. Thanks to this high indicator, it is possible to obtain a standard DTL of 0.035-55 from light stove fuel. By passing through filtration through the production module we offer, stove light and other contaminated fuels become a clean product.
- The use of fuel purified in the DITO MPM makes it possible to improve the environment, since the danger of exhaust gases from internal combustion engines is significantly reduced. This is especially true for quarry equipment of mining enterprises.
Almost always, diesel fuel encounters some kind of contaminants and water, which causes a lot of grief and trouble, since it is a difficult-to-burn liquid and the entire piston system wears out over time. In addition, statistics indicate that in Russia the amount of sulfur is 0.01% in diesel fuel. As a result, the cylinder walls quickly become dirty and the fuel injectors become clogged.
At professional treatment plants, a centrifuge is used, with the help of which water and heavy elements are separated from diesel fuel and its dehydrated version is obtained at the output. After this, it is treated with chemical elements and refined.
So how to clean it yourself at home?
There are several methods for such cleaning:
- method of settling: it is necessary to place the canister or tank with diesel fuel in a dark place for a month, as a result, the amount of solid particles will settle to the bottom, the upper part of the fuel should be carefully drained;
- freezing using sulfuric acid: for this, the acid is carefully poured into a container with diesel fuel in a ratio of 1:10, it must be poured in a thin stream, as it is very dangerous, after screwing on the lid, this container should be shaken for two minutes and left alone for a day, every other day there will be a cloudy sediment at the bottom of the vessel, so carefully drain the clean liquid without sediment;
- To filter this material in the car, you should install a special separator in the fuel system, which will effectively clean the fuel from various contaminants.
Separators can be chemical or mechanical, differing in their operating principle; they will separate water and deposit it at the bottom of the purifier. More expensive devices have a special paper layer that can retain a very large volume of water.
The service life of the entire fuel system of a car directly depends on the purity and quality of diesel fuel; water specifically leads to the formation of rust and causes corrosion of the system.
In winter, the water in the pipeline may freeze and, as a result, the engine will work intermittently or even stall at a crucial moment.
In the summer, microorganisms can live and multiply in the water, feed on diesel fuel and clog the fuel filter in large quantities. In addition, with high injection pressure, water in the fuel can lead to cavitation processes, which lead to metal erosion, wear of injector nozzles, and ultimately, diesel fuel consumption increases and the economic characteristics of the engine deteriorate. This is why it is so important to use only clean diesel fuel.
We offer you an article from the magazine “Autoperozchik” 2006 No. 4 (67).

Water and diesel fuel are inseparable “friends,” although this “friendship” is very dubious. There are other pollutants in diesel fuel, but it is water that causes the most problems: conventional filters do not retain it, and separator filters, which replaced settling tanks and are designed to separate water from fuel, do not always do this as well as we would like.
It has long been no secret to anyone that the service life of fuel equipment depends, first of all, on the quality of diesel fuel and, to a large extent, on its purity. As for the main pollutants in the fuel system of diesel cars, they are well known - these are organic and inorganic substances, and of course water. Moreover, it is precisely this, which is not retained by a conventional fuel filter, that causes the most serious trouble.
No matter how clean the fuel you pour into the tank, there will always be some amount of dirt and definitely water with its indispensable companions - rust and microorganisms. As for low-quality fuel, it may also contain heavy hydrocarbons, asphaltenes, which leave black deposits on the filter. It is these “inclusions” that clog the fuel filter, sometimes too quickly. But that’s why it is installed, to extract all kinds of impurities from the fuel, while developing its resource the faster, the more dirt there is.
The many-sided “predator”
Water in diesel fuel has never been considered harmless, causing corrosion of the fuel system and the formation of rust. In addition, in winter, water may freeze somewhere in the pipeline, and then the engine will operate unstably or stall altogether. Microorganisms that feed on diesel fuel can also live in the water (they cause the most problems in the warm season, when they begin to multiply intensively, often completely clogging the fuel filter).
Microorganisms multiply especially rapidly in the fuel system during the warm season and can then completely clog fuel filters
Heavy hydrocarbons asphaltenes, which may be present in low-quality fuel, leave black deposits on the filter
But few people know that the greatest damage to fuel equipment is caused by the water present in diesel fuel - at high injection pressure, it causes cavitation processes leading to active erosion of the metal, which causes accelerated wear of calibrated injector nozzles. And this, in turn, leads to an increase in fuel consumption and, accordingly, to a deterioration in the environmental and economic characteristics of the engine.
At the same time, the especially negative role of water manifests itself during the transition to higher environmental standards, and the damage caused by water to fuel equipment increases in direct proportion. And if for better atomization of fuel it was necessary to increase the accuracy and pressure of injection, then wear of the nozzles of the nozzles, caused by water in the fuel, occurs in a quadratic dependence on the injection pressure. So, if the fuel pressure in the area of the plunger pair in Euro-2 engines averaged 120 kg/cm 2, then in Euro-3 it increased to 150, and in Euro-4 - to 180-200. Therefore, when using fuel with the same water content, injectors on a Euro-3 engine will last one and a half times less than on Euro-2, and on Euro-4 their full service life is reduced by almost three times.
Table 1.
Average injection pressure for different engines and relative wear of injectors in the presence of the same amount of water in diesel fuel
At the same time, pump injectors installed on modern engines, which primarily suffer from water, are very expensive (replacing a set of them can cost the owner several thousand euros, not counting losses due to vehicle downtime). Therefore, as engines and their fuel equipment improve, the problem of purifying diesel fuel from water becomes more and more urgent. And for this, the vast majority of companies producing cars with diesel engines are required to install separator filters, the task of which is to separate water from diesel fuel, since conventional fuel filters only retain free water, and even not completely (however, separator filters do not always cope with the task assigned to them effectively enough).
Graph 1. Dependence of wear of fuel equipment on the quality of diesel fuel filtration
Therefore, we want to introduce readers to new developments in this area - in particular, with the products of the American company Fleetguard, which is one of the world leaders in the production of filter separators.
What are the dangers of water in diesel fuel?
Water found in diesel fuel can be divided into two types: free and emulsified. Free water, as a rule, is always present in the fuel tank (usually it gets there in two ways: with fuel during refueling and in the form of condensate formed due to temperature changes).
With the transition to the Euro-3 standard, the temperature regime of the engine became more stringent - the fuel supplied to the engine power system began to more actively perform its cooling function. After all, a significant part of the diesel fuel pumped out of the fuel tank soon returns there again, but warmer. As the temperature difference between the outside and inside of the fuel tank increases, the moisture from the air there condenses, the resulting small drops partially flow to the bottom (180-260 µ in size), and drops with a diameter of 5-180 µ, partially mixing with diesel fuel, form an emulsion with it, which can remain in the fuel for quite a long time. Thus, sooner or later water will appear in any fuel tank, and anyone who believes that by purchasing fuel from reputable companies will thereby protect their fuel system from water is mistaken.
At the same time, the fuel pump, pumping diesel fuel from the tank, simultaneously picks up the settled water that has accumulated below, which, having mixed with diesel fuel, partially turns back into an emulsified state
.
Today, a typical diesel engine fuel system consists of a fuel filter (the so-called fine filter) and a separator filter (usually installed first). Heating is usually connected to the latter in order to avoid blocking the filter element with paraffins and frozen water in cold weather.
The Fleetguard company, for example, has supplemented existing systems with a special thermistor electric heater, which is a washer about a centimeter thick and is installed between the head and the filter in the form of a gasket (power supply is from the vehicle’s on-board network). The heating element is barium titanate, which changes its resistance depending on the temperature, and when the temperature of the heating element reaches 50ºC, its resistance increases greatly, and the current in the circuit decreases. Thanks to this, there is no danger of fuel overheating, and a thermostat is not needed. And since the thermistor is self-regulating, it can be constantly turned on in winter when the engine is running.
The separator filter, the “grandnephew” of the settling filter, must be equipped with a valve or plug for draining water. And you shouldn’t forget to drain the water from there, otherwise the filter will fill with water and stop passing fuel, or the water will go into the fuel line. And since water is the most dangerous for injection systems, it is because of them that developers set particularly stringent requirements for filter separators (in particular, the Bosch company requires that the separator separate at least 93% of the nominal water flow from the supplied fuel, including free and emulsified).
How much water can a separator filter retain?
Today, some companies claim that their separators are capable of retaining 100% of water. Alas, such an achievement still belongs to the realm of science fiction - there are still no such ideal materials that could retain all the emulsified water. But it is much easier to separate free water, although this is quite difficult to do completely. Therefore, those who claim that their filter separators separate 100% of water are wishful thinking, even if we are talking about free water. Their representatives prefer not to mention the share of the total water flow retained by the products of such companies. As a rule, for the simple reason that many separator filters either do not retain emulsified water at all or retain it in extremely small quantities.

As for the real numbers, as can be seen from table. 2, the best performance in purifying fuel from water today belongs to the Fleetguard company, whose separator filters separate at least 95% of the water in the system, including free and emulsified water. Such a high level of fuel purification was made possible primarily due to the use of synthetic material StrataPore, a proprietary development of Fleetguard, in the manufacture of filter elements.
Scheme of operation of the StrataPore filter material
StrataPore material under a microscope
The peculiarity of filters made using this material is that their filter elements consist of five layers. The two outer layers are made using traditional technologies (from cellulose and fiberglass), and the three inner layers are made from non-woven water-repellent synthetic fiber (the latter being connected to each other using ultrasound). Moreover, each subsequent layer retains contaminants of smaller and smaller sizes and works independently of the others (particles up to 2 microns in size are retained), which is beyond the capabilities of a conventional paper element. And since all five layers work simultaneously, the capacity of this filter is much higher than that of a similar size filter made using cellulose.
All Fleetguard filter separators are made using
StrataPore material;
layers of a filter element made using StrataPore material. But no less important, and perhaps the main advantage of the StrataPore material is the non-wetting of its polyester layers. Due to their water-repellent properties, unlike cellulose, they allow water to pass through much worse, much of which is retained by the filter and flows into the sump.
In addition, the production technology allows StrataPore to be produced with stable pore sizes. And this makes it possible to produce filters with a precisely specified level of purification, which determines the size of particles they can retain. It should be noted here that the pore size (or, as experts say, “micronage”) of the filter is selected depending on its purpose. And the principle “the less the better” does not work in this case. But more on that later.
Filter resource is a conditional concept
Sadly, although filter elements made from StrataPore are said to be three times more efficient than conventional filter elements, under certain circumstances their lifespan can be comparable to that of an original cellulose filter. After all, StrataPore, despite its large capacity, retains much more dirt, as it has better cleaning quality. By the way, the prevailing opinion that the filter (and filter separator as well) is better the longer it can work without replacement, is wrong. It is easy to verify this using such a simple example: a filter without a filter element will never clog and will work forever. But what's the use of it? At the same time, a filter with a capacity of 75 g (designed to retain 75 g of contaminants) will last only as long as it takes to remove the specified amount of dirt from the fuel. And this time will depend solely on the purity of the fuel. After all, the purpose of the filter is to trap contaminants, which means that the better the filter does its job, the more often it requires replacement.
Graph 2. Dependence of water separation efficiency (%) on time (min)
Now the Fleetguard company produces fuel filters and separator filters for all diesel engines of trucks and cars (more than 12 thousand items in total). However, so far only overseas manufacturers use them as original ones, and such filters come to Europe as spare parts. True, Scania, the first European automaker, has already expressed its intention to install Fleetguard filters on its trucks; Some other European automakers are also negotiating this.
Such successes of Fleetguard are not accidental. Half a century ago, it was founded by the world leader in the production of diesel engines with power over 50 hp. With. - American company Cummins. And all these years, the company’s engineers have been developing and improving, at the production base of their founder, technologies for filtering fuel, oil, air and technical fluids for commercial diesel engines.
As for the prices for Fleetguard filter separators, they are quite comparable with the prices for products of similar purposes from other manufacturers. And with the delivery of such systems to the assembly line, their price is expected to decrease further.
