How to clean a sink: types of dirt and cleaning products

I think this is familiar to most of us. Hard water and soap make the surface of ceramic tiles or glass dull and unsightly. Of course, there are plenty of products that promise to get rid of this plaque plaguing your bathroom, but most of them contain some pretty harsh chemicals. In addition, soap scum returns over time.

I'll tell you how to get rid of soap scum without using a gas mask when cleaning a shower stall or bathroom. This recipe will make your walls flawless.

By the way, the materials that will be used may already be at home.

Let's start!

Anti-limescale agents

Bathroom sinks and kitchen sinks are made from different materials: enamel, earthenware, steel, acrylic stone. Each option requires its own tool. But there are general requirements :

  • It is not allowed to clean surfaces with metal brushes and sponges;
  • You must follow the recommended concentration of the drug when washing.

This applies to both special factory formulations and folk ones.

Specialized

They produce liquid, gel and powder formulations. The former are safer, the latter are more effective, but are recommended only for severe contamination.

  • Cif is a universal product for all types of sinks. Removes limescale in 10–15 minutes.
  • Cillit Bang – recommended for cleaning sanitary ware and porcelain.
  • Domestos is an option for sinks made of artificial stone, including acrylic. A gel is used, not a powder.
  • HG Wash&Shine – gel for washing sinks made of natural stone. Leaves behind a protective film.
  • TOP HOUSE – a product for cleaning stainless steel sinks, as well as any metal parts.

Dirty glass washbasins can be cleaned with regular glass cleaner. Any will do.

Folk

Available household products can easily cope with minor stains. They are easier to use and cheaper.

Citric acid in a ratio of 50 g to 2 glasses of water will help clean the sink from limescale Universal product for washbasins with enamel coating. It is also used to clean acrylic sinks, but using a different technology. Plug the drain hole, take in water and dissolve 100 g of citric acid in it. After 3 hours the washbasin is clean.

The best solution for stainless steel is 9% vinegar . It is mixed with hydrogen peroxide and water in a 2:1 ratio. Spray the solution onto washbasins from a spray bottle and leave for 30 minutes. Particularly contaminated areas are wiped with a toothbrush.

Sinks made of natural and artificial stone cannot be cleaned with folk remedies. Special formulations are required.

Rules for cleaning a shower stall at home

When focusing on a particular brand of household chemicals, you should choose one that has already been tested. This way you can be sure that the surface being cleaned will not be damaged by the acids and abrasives contained in such products.

It is also worth considering the material that needs to be restored to its original appearance, and not just the origin of the contamination. It is best to choose not a universal product, but one suitable for each surface; with this approach, the effectiveness will be higher.

To remove limescale, it is not necessary to use expensive purchased products; you can also use acids available in any kitchen. After all, the main cleansing mechanism is the interaction of salt deposits with, for example, acetic acid, which penetrates inside and dissolves them.

To tidy up your shower head, you can immerse it overnight in table vinegar diluted 1:1 with water.

Remedies for yellowness

Yellowness is the result of the interaction of rust particles from tap water and the surface material. Enamel or sanitaryware is quite porous, so iron oxide particles are absorbed into the pores over time. The steel surface does not have pores, but if even the thinnest layer of grease or lime has formed on it, brown rusty spots also appear.

Specialized

The following products are used for cleaning.

  • Unicum – composition for acrylic and enamel surfaces. The spray penetrates the pores and dissolves rust and limescale deposits.
  • Dirtoff San Pro is a universal composition for ceramic, enamel and acrylic sinks. Does not contain aggressive substances and has an antibacterial effect.
  • Neomid Anti-Rust is a strong acid composition, especially for enamel sinks.
  • Pufas Glutoclean is an anti-rust spray for any type of sink, except for products made of natural stone. Apply only to dry surfaces.
  • Brand Professional used for cleaning stainless steel and enamel washbasins.

Folk

A thin yellow coating or small stains can be removed using improvised means.

  • For a steel sink, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia is ideal . Apply the liquid with a brush to the damaged areas and wash off after half an hour with a soap solution.
  • To clean acrylic and earthenware sinks, use baking soda . The powder is diluted with water to obtain a paste. Treat the sink with this mixture and wash it off after half an hour. If you need to return the white color to the sink, add vinegar to the soda.
  • Rusty stains on a marble or granite sink are very rare, but if plaque appears, it can be easily washed off with regular dishwashing detergent . You can wipe off severe stains with dry baking soda or mustard powder .
  • Citric acid is used to clean enamel surfaces , since enamel is more sensitive. Dry soda or mustard powder gives good results . Rub the mixture onto the sink and wash it off after half an hour.

When choosing a cleaning product, take into account the material of the sink and sewer pipes.

Removing fungus from bathroom tiles

In the restroom, conditions for the development of fungus are very favorable. Therefore, you may notice black or green spots on the tiles, in the seams, near the sides of the bathtub or tray. This is not only an aesthetic drawback: mold spores are fraught with allergies, asthma, and dermatosis.

A few precautions:

  • Do not allow humidity in the room to increase. Wipe up any puddles of water left after swimming and ensure that the plumbing is in good working order. After bathing, turn on the fan or leave the bathroom doors open.
  • Don't dry things in the bathroom.
  • Get rid of all pockets of fungus. Even a few undetected specks can spread into huge colonies throughout the room.
  • There are special antiseptics on the market that effectively deal with mold. Some people prefer proven folk remedies. In any case, work with solutions wearing gloves and a respirator.

    The first spots of mold can be removed with a construction knife, and the area can be treated with an antiseptic or plumbing product. To get rid of a small lesion, use the following home remedies:

  • hydrogen peroxide;
  • vinegar;
  • baking soda;
  • household chemicals with chlorine;
  • ammonia.
  • When working with alcohol, do not close yourself indoors. Vapors may cause poisoning. Ammonia removes mold only from the surface of the tile. For seams you will have to choose a different method.

    Also remember that it is contraindicated to clean glossy tiles with a hard brush or abrasives. Otherwise, small scratches will appear on it, it will stop shining and become dull. To make the job easier, you can brush between the seams, removing mold, and only then begin processing.

    Large areas of fungus cannot be removed using improvised means. They use aggressive household chemicals. You may have to process the room several times. Izocid, SikaGard and other antifungal products are popular.

    You need to work with the products only according to the instructions provided. The bathroom is a high-humidity area, so plaque or mold often appears on the tiles. It is much easier to regularly monitor cleanliness than to buy special products later. If you don’t want to spend money on household chemicals, try folk recipes with vinegar, ammonia or soda.

    How to remove soap scum

    Residues of surfactants and dirt have an alkaline reaction and are easily washed off with any product containing acid.

    • Vinegar with soda is used for stainless steel and ceramics . Soda is diluted to make a paste, and the surface is rubbed with this mixture. When the composition dries completely, it is washed off.
    • A gentle but effective remedy for acrylic and enamel sinks is medical alcohol . Soak a soft cloth or cotton pad in the liquid and wipe the surface. The same product is used to clean glass washbasins and bathtubs.
    • Dishwashing liquid is a universal option for washing made of any material , including natural stone. The composition necessarily includes substances that dissolve fat and surfactants, so you can get rid of soap scum and stone without effort.

    To remove soap scum, you can use any professional acidic product.

    Methods for restoring grout

    If the condition of the grout is generally satisfactory, but the seams have lost their original appearance, they can be updated using the following methods:

      Apply a bleaching pencil or seam marker. Often these pencils contain antifungal additives and can temporarily refresh the grout and protect it from mold.
  • Apply waterproof paint. The method is short-lived, but the grout will look neat for several months.
  • Partial renovation of grout with replacement of the top layer.
  • In case of deeply ingrained dirt and severe fungal infection, the old grout is completely removed and replaced with a new mixture. The new composition must contain biocidal additives that protect the seams from mold damage.
