How to store coconut oil (before and after opening): humidity, expiration date, temperature, refrigerator storage container

Coconut oil is a versatile and healthy product. It can be used as a cosmetic for skin, hair and nails, and can be eaten by frying organic vegetables, meats and adding it to porridges. It is not capricious in storage, but you still need to follow certain rules so that the oil does not lose its properties before the expiration date. The article provides details on how to store and select coconut oil.

Types of Coconut Oil

Before sealing this product in cans or bottles and sending it to stores, manufacturers subject it to various treatments. Their main goal is to extend shelf life.

Main types of coconut oil:

  • Refined. This is the type sold in most stores. It will be obtained by cold pressing. The product is subjected to minor processing, during which it is purified from various impurities. You can only smell it a little. This oil can be kept for several months at room or cool temperature.
  • Unrefined oil. This is an oil that is also cold pressed, but it does not undergo special purification procedures. The oil has a smell, yellowish color and heterogeneous consistency. This product is stored for literally several days, so it can only be found directly in production.
  • Canned. This oil has a longer shelf life than refined oil. It undergoes fewer purification processes, but has a homogeneous structure. To increase the shelf life of the oil, various chemical preservatives are added to it. However, this method of oil production is used extremely rarely. This oil can be stored for several years.

In most cases, the refined type is found on sale, so this is what we will talk about. But all the tips for a refined product also apply to canned oil.

Important! The melting point of this oil is 23-25 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it can acquire different consistencies: liquid or solid. If the air cools below 22 degrees, the oil hardens. In summer, in hot weather above 25 degrees, the oil becomes liquid. This is normal and does not indicate its damage at all.

Storage conditions for coconut oil

On any package of oil, manufacturers indicate the date of manufacture and expiration date. For a coconut product, this can range from 18 to 36 months. However, if storage conditions are not followed, the product may deteriorate even earlier.

Important! Regardless of the expiration date, once the package is opened, the shelf life of coconut oil is reduced to 12 months. It is better not to store opened oil for longer than this period.

In order not to throw out expired oil, you should take it based on the volume of use. It is also more convenient to buy coconut product in small jars of 200-400 ml. In any case, it is important to adhere to basic storage conditions.

Temperature

Coconut oil can be stored safely at room temperature. The only caveat is that depending on the temperature, it can change its consistency.

  • At temperatures above 25 degrees, it becomes liquid, like olive or sunflower oil.
  • At temperatures from 10 to 25 degrees it has a consistency similar to jelly. Very pleasant to the touch.
  • At temperatures below 10 degrees, its consistency becomes similar to a piece of lard. This oil is inconvenient to use.

The butter can be stored in the refrigerator, but in this case it will need to be melted each time. But it will keep longer in the refrigerator. Therefore, it is better to put some of the product in the cold.

Everyone chooses their oil consistency differently. Some people find it convenient to pour it out of a bottle, while others find it convenient to scoop it up with a stick or spoon. If it is more convenient to use solid oil, then it should be taken into account that regular contact with external objects reduces the shelf life of the product.

It is not recommended to move oil from a warm room to a cold one, nor is it recommended to store it in the bathroom. Temperature changes reduce the shelf life of oil.

Humidity

High humidity leads to the growth and reproduction of various bacteria. This, in turn, leads to oil deterioration: rancidity and rotting. Also, due to increased humidity, mold may appear.

Therefore, you should not store oil in the bathroom, or open it in this room. If you need to use the product in the bathroom, you can pour it into a small open container, the volume of which is enough for 1-2 times.

Light

Light inevitably enhances chemical reactions in any product, especially oxidation. Because of this, most oils are sold in dark, opaque containers.

The strongest reactions occur in oil under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, so the oil should be protected from sunlight. This is especially important to consider if the oil is used as a sunscreen - after use, the bottle should be immediately put away in a bag or other dark place. The shadow just won't work for this.

It is better to constantly store oil in a dark place.

Melting/thickening/smoke points

Coconut oil is stored at room temperature or colder, such as on a refrigerator shelf. At +25⁰С and above it melts and becomes liquid. At lower temperatures it becomes solid. The beneficial properties and quality of the product do not change in both states. High temperatures have a negative effect, for example, when heated by direct sunlight. The optimal range for storage is from +4 to +25⁰С.

The smoke point of coconut oil is 177⁰C. After reaching this point, you should not eat the product, as it produces carcinogens that contribute to the development of cancer.

Coconut oil storage container

The ease of use of the oil also depends on the packaging. To select containers for storage, you must first decide under what conditions the oil will be used.

If you plan to use it in rooms where the temperature is below 23 degrees, then it is better to store it in a jar, since it is more convenient to scoop up solid oil from there. If you intend to use the oil in the heat, then you should choose a bottle for storage.

It is better not to store coconut oil in plastic or metal containers. The most suitable materials for such containers:

  • Glass
  • Ceramics
  • Porcelain
  • Faience.

It is better not to store the product in a bulky, large container, for example, in a liter or half-liter jar or bottle. Buying oil in such containers is, of course, much cheaper. But after opening the package, it is better to pour it into small containers.

This option has many advantages:

  • Liquids used for cosmetic and food purposes do not overlap.
  • Not the entire volume of a substance is immediately in contact with the external environment and other objects.
  • Oil can be used in portions.
  • It is more convenient to take the oil with you on the road.
  • This makes it more convenient to store the product where it will be used - in a cabinet in the kitchen or in the room.

Storage containers must be closed, since contact with air promotes oxidation and, as a result, rancidity.

How to determine if a product has gone bad

The suitability of an oil can be determined by two criteria:

  • Unhealthy whitish tint and traces of mold on the oil. However, the white color should not be confused with the natural shade of the oil.
  • An unpleasant, rotten or rancid odor that can occur even in oil in its solid state.

You definitely cannot use a spoiled product, as this can cause harm to the body.

When stored properly, coconut oil provides a lot of pleasure in both cooking recipes and as cosmetics.

Beneficial features

Coconut juice, which contains 80% triglycides, is a source of energy. The calorie content of 100 g of product is 899 kcal. Lauric and caprylic saturated fatty acids in the composition increase the level of “good” cholesterol, prevent the development of heart failure and vascular pathologies.

Other benefits of coconut oil:

  • gives a feeling of quick satiety, suppresses appetite;
  • treats eczema, dermatitis;
  • strengthens the immune defense, increases the body's resistance to seasonal colds;
  • helps calcium absorption;
  • partially restores the cognitive abilities of the brain in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease;
  • prevents the development of hypertension;
  • medium chain triglycides accelerate metabolic reactions by breaking down lipids;
  • lauric acid fights bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Coconut oil, containing vitamin E and myristic acid, maintains youthful skin and softens hair.
