General recommendations
In order for the item to retain its good appearance and serve the owner for a long time, it is recommended to comply with all care requirements. Clothes made of genuine leather or leatherette can be ironed quickly and easily using household appliances or traditional methods.
You can iron a leather skirt yourself, but it is important to observe the temperature regime. Not only ironing, but also other methods will help remove cracks, creases, and folds.
To smooth your skin at home, you can use the following methods:
- Exposure to steam or temperature;
- Natural oil;
- Special professional sprays;
- Traditional methods.
It is important to understand that leather is a natural material; it can absorb some moisture, stretch, or, on the contrary, dry out over time.
Important! In order not to damage the product, pay attention to the tab; the recommendations written there should describe the care requirements. Almost always they indicate the permissible maximum temperature for ironing things. Heating the iron any higher is prohibited.
You can iron a leather jacket or skirt only through the fabric; if there are folds, go over them with steam from an iron or a steam generator. Do not forget to change the water in the iron, otherwise dirty stains may remain on the product.
How to deal with deep folds or creases
If a wrinkled jacket shows severe creases, you can lubricate it with grease, moisturizer, clear shoe polish, or leather spray. They will make the skin more flexible and it will smooth out better.
After this, you can carry out the steaming procedure, repeating it if necessary. If the folds are not eliminated, the leather jacket can be ironed, following all the necessary rules. In this case, you cannot increase the temperature above 100 degrees and increase the exposure time on the area. If heat treatment has no effect, it can be repeated only after the jacket has completely cooled.
Important: if folds or creases cannot be removed on your own, the clothes should be dry cleaned.
What not to do
Leather products are very demanding to care for. It’s worth knowing what not to do to avoid damage to your favorite trousers or dress.
What not to do | What is necessary |
Iron clothes right side out. | Iron a raincoat or skirt from the wrong side and through the fabric |
Store folded or tightly clamp it with things. This can lead to wrinkles and creases. | Hang on a hanger. |
Do not straighten wrinkled clothing with your hands; strong tension may cause the material to tear. | It is best to straighten a leather belt, remove wrinkles from a bag or things by steaming. |
Iron a product with stains | Before smoothing, treat to remove all dirt. |
Dry the skirt with hot air or on radiators. | The product should dry naturally, lying on a horizontal surface or vertically on a hanger. |
Important! The product must be smoothed out upon purchase; if there are folds or creases, ask the seller to steam it or replace it with a better one.
How to smooth out eco-leather on a jacket
Despite the fact that marketers are trying to convince us otherwise, eco-leather is also leatherette, just slightly improved. The basis of eco-leather is a backing fabric on which polyurethane is applied. Gradually wearing away, any hall turns into a crack that cannot be restored. Therefore, timely smoothing is not a whim of an esthete, but a necessity that will help extend the wear period.
Like all artificial substitutes containing polyurethane, the only thing eco-leather is afraid of is targeted exposure to high temperatures. Simply put, ironing with a hot iron is out of the question. But steam treatment is not only not prohibited, but even encouraged. The processing rules are similar to those listed above. To find out more precisely how to smooth out eco-leather on a jacket, the information provided on the product label will help.
Using an iron and steamer
The best way to solve the problem is to let it flatten out under its own weight on a hanger. If you don’t have time to wait, then you can iron your leather jacket using an iron.
There are rules that will help protect things from damage and deformation:
- The thing is turned inside out.
- The iron is set to the lowest temperature; if there is an acceptable temperature on the tongue, then they rely on it.
- The steam mode is turned off so as not to spoil the item.
- Iron leather clothing through several layers of gauze or clean cotton cloth.
The steamer is used only to smooth out advanced cases. The iron or steamer must be kept at a distance of at least 10 cm from the product. Do not allow the iron or steamer to come into contact with the skin, as this will instantly damage the item.
Before ironing the entire skirt, try it on a small area in an inconspicuous place. If there are no traces left, then you can start ironing; if the test does not pass, then it is better to abandon the iron.
How to iron a leatherette jacket
Contrary to erroneous belief, removing creases on leatherette is no less difficult than on natural leather. And primarily due to the incredible amount of innovative materials used in light industry. Therefore, before processing, carefully study the manufacturer's label. In 90 cases out of 100, it is the label that provides the most complete information on how to iron your leatherette jacket. But if the inscription on the label has worn off over time and you don’t know anything about the type of material, use universal time-tested methods.
- Iron. The principles of operation in this case are absolutely identical to those listed above. The only difference is the ban on heat treatment of the front side. In addition, we remind you: only clean items can be ironed. Of course, if the jacket is new, then cleaning is not required immediately after purchase. But if the item has been worn, washing is required.
- Steam generator or clothes steamer. But again, we are talking only about processing from the inside. By the way, a steamer is an ideal solution for ironing a down jacket made of leatherette or eco-leather. But do not forget to wash your worn item first. - Colorless water-repellent shoe polish works well even with serious creases. Apply the cream to the surface and leave to soak. If necessary, repeat the operation 2-3 times.
