How to drive birds out from under the roof of a house: 5 proven methods

“Flying rats” is the ugly name French townspeople call birds. And there is some truth in this: the harm from these feathered guests is no less than from the tailed ones. They dirty roofs, constantly make annoying noise and scratch surfaces with their claws - they really cause a lot of problems.

But you can only get rid of birds from the roof using humane and legally permitted methods. For example, the same poisoned food can be swallowed by a domestic cat, and shooting does not solve the problem at all. Therefore, it is easier to scare them or create not the most comfortable living conditions for them.

And there are really many ways to drive birds out from under the roof of a house. All of them are effective in different cases. And each of them has its own disadvantages and advantages, which we will now discuss.

Types and their application features

There are a large number of different devices and devices designed to prevent the accumulation of birds in various places of human activity.
After all, large flocks of them can harm not only gardens and vegetable gardens, but also complicate the work of airports and some industrial enterprises. To prevent bird attacks on various objects, special devices are used. These can range from the most primitive homemade bird scarers to complex technical devices. Moreover, modern devices are the most effective. They are divided into several main types:

  1. Electronic;
  2. UZ;
  3. Bioacoustic.

Repellers of the first type are considered the most powerful. They are capable of producing sharp and quite loud sounds that travel over long distances.

The use of such devices in personal plots is inappropriate, since the device is capable of generating strong sound waves. However, the use of electronic acoustic repellers at airfields allows you to quickly get rid of birds that often interfere with aircraft flights.

Let's watch the video, the principle of operation of the bioacoustic bird repeller:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=uYheRddIyJU

Bioacoustic devices also produce sounds. Only, unlike electronic ones, they resemble not a shot, but the alarming cries of birds recorded in extreme situations. By scrolling through the recording you can get rid of uninvited guests, as it will warn them of danger. Such equipment can be used in private gardens; it does not harm the health of birds, but only scares them away. In this case, the volume can be adjusted independently.

Various operating modes are provided for such devices:

  • Standard;
  • User defined;
  • Detector.

Ultrasonic pigeon repellers produce sounds at a frequency that is inaudible to humans, but unpleasant to birds. Some models of such devices have a visual deterrent system. In this case, along with the ultrasonic signal created by the bird repeller, a flash of bright light also appears. This function is activated when the bird moves, but with the same success it can protect the territory from stray animals. Such devices are among the most compact and can be placed either on the roof or wall of a building, or on a special leg dug into the ground.

However, a person’s desire to protect his crops from uninvited guests forces scientists to develop new and modify existing devices. This has led to the emergence of bioacoustic bird scarers equipped with powerful sirens and LEDs that can be turned off at the owner’s request.

Alternative ways to scare away pigeons

1. It is enough to take a “cold shower” a couple of times. Some water the birds with a hose, others use a garden sprayer - in any case, the birds will not dare to return to uncomfortable conditions.

2. Sprinkle a thin layer of sharp-smelling spices on the balcony, windowsill or attic: black or cayenne pepper, ground ginger or cinnamon, dry mustard. Don't forget to update the repeller regularly.

3. A figurine or stuffed animal of a predator (owl, eagle owl, crow) is not found in every home, but it can scare persistent birds.

4. If you find an empty (!) nest, place “dummies” of pigeon eggs in it. For birds this will be a signal: “the place is occupied!”

5. The most “advanced” device is considered to be an ultrasonic repeller. Producing ultrasound that is imperceptible to people and pets, but unpleasant to birds, the device operates as quickly and efficiently as possible.

How harmful are birds in a summer cottage?

From childhood we are taught that birds are protectors of gardens. They destroy harmful bark beetles, leaf-eating caterpillars, aphids and other insects that harm vegetable crops, fruits, and trees. However, for some reason no one remembers that beneficial birds turn out to be dangerous pests, destroying the grown crops if a bird repeller made from a plastic bottle is not installed in the garden.

Crow

And this is not the only harmful act committed by birds:

  • Nimble gray sparrows quickly notice when fresh lawns are seeded. They immediately appear on the plot as a friendly family and quickly peck the seeds.
  • Flocks of birds trampling on the grass damage young, immature lawns.
  • Jackdaws love to eat vegetable seeds. They dig up freshly dug beds and look for prey.
  • Crows, starlings, and pigeons are not at all afraid of human proximity. Given the opportunity, they are not averse to flying onto the balcony, into a gazebo in the country, stealing something edible or crap on the table or other garden furniture.
  • Sometimes birds like to land on film greenhouses to rest. Flying up, they tear the film with their claws.

Making a bird repeller from a plastic bottle with your own hands

For many years, homemade scarecrows have been used in gardens to scare away birds, shiny disks have been hung, and magnetic film from cassettes has been stretched.

Modern “Kulibins” have figured out how to make a bird repeller from a plastic bottle.

The simplest and most successful example was demonstrated by the hosts of the program “While Everyone is Home.” Timur Kizyakov and his engineer friend Andrei Bakhmetyev in a matter of minutes made a device that conquered the world and saved crops. Their experience is worthy of study.

Sequence of actions step by step

Before you learn how to make a bird repeller from a bottle, you need to prepare materials and tools.

To work you will need:

  • plastic bottle;
  • pieces of foil;
  • scotch;
  • knife-cutter;
  • small washer;
  • glue or liquid nails;
  • felt-tip pen;
  • a piece of thick wire;
  • stick holder.

We begin to assemble a bird repeller with our own hands from plastic bottles according to the instructions:

  1. Drill a hole in the lid and bottom, placing them opposite each other. The diameter must be such that the prepared wire or electrode can pass freely.
  2. Make markings for future blades with a felt-tip pen. Divide the surface vertically into four parts, draw straight lines. Add two horizontal lines to each vertical line to make four “C” letters.
  3. Make slits along the marked stripes with a knife. The result is 4 blade doors that open outward.
  4. Glue a washer onto the wire at a distance of 1 cm from the end.
  5. Place the wire in the bottle, directing it into the hole made in the bottom. The washer holds the bottle, spins, and does not fall down.
  6. Screw the lid on, passing the second end of the wire into the hole.
  7. To frighten birds, you can glue pieces of shiny foil to the blades.
  8. If the length of the wire is at least 1 m, then the repeller can be mounted on it. If you don’t have a long steel wire at home, it is recommended to attach the finished product to a stick.

It's time to take the device out into the garden and test it in practice. Even a small breeze will spin it, which means the task is completed.

Conclusion

A do-it-yourself bird repeller made from plastic liter or one and a half liter bottles is the simplest means of helping to preserve the harvest and drive away uninvited guests from the site.

It is installed for times when protection is required. In autumn, rooks, sparrows, tits and pigeons will return to the gardens, sing songs, and destroy real pests.

Why are pigeons undesirable guests in human habitation?

How to get rid of pigeons on the balcony? Effective methods of control

But this coin, like any other, has two sides. And the dark side of this neighborhood is that these city birds are carriers of more than 90 diseases, 10 of which are dangerous to humans. The most common of them: psittacosis, salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, Newcastle disease. In addition to infectious diseases, you can “catch” fleas, ticks and other parasites from pigeons. This is the first thing.

Secondly, they try to settle in areas adjacent to housing: balconies, window sills, attics and terraces, after which they become unsuitable for use, as they are covered with droppings, feathers, fluff and scratches from claws. As they say in an old joke: “Don’t confuse tourism with emigration.” It’s one thing to feed sociable birds on your windowsill and a completely different thing to wipe it off afterwards from traces of their presence.

Why do pigeons prefer architectural excesses to trees and leaves in dew? Because living there is more convenient, safer and more satisfying. This means that in order to get rid of an unwanted neighborhood, you need to turn these advantages into disadvantages.

Pigeons are carriers of diseases dangerous to humans, so you need to limit your proximity to them

There are many ways to get rid of unwanted pigeon intrusions. We have divided them into three types based on the reasons we have established for this invasion: elimination of convenience, security and access to food.

We make the balcony, attic, cornice, etc. inconvenient for birds to live and spend time

Pigeons, like any birds, are shy. They do not like sharp sounds and smells, bright light and proximity to other animals, especially predators. How to make your home and surrounding areas inconvenient for birds to use?

The balcony can be protected using reflective film, foil (cut into strips 5–7 cm wide and attached to the balcony railing) or old CDs. All this glares well in the sun, and bright spots of light scare away birds. If you happen to have cassette tapes left, hang them in any form. They will rustle and reflect light. There is also an option with tin cans, which, when suspended, will both shine and make noise, but there is a danger that family members will run away from the house along with the pigeons.

An effective sound method for controlling pigeons indoors is to place an ultrasonic bird repeller. This device can be purchased at a hardware store, in the pest control section. A clear advantage over the previous method is complete invisibility for people, since ultrasound is not detected by the human ear.

Human-safe ultrasonic bird repeller

How to choose the right repellent system: useful tips

To protect a private house with a small area from pests, it is recommended to purchase an ultrasonic repeller. To use such a system in a large open area, it is necessary to select a device with a high degree of climate protection. Bioacoustic systems will help get rid of pests on large objects and vast areas of land.

In places where there are large crowds of people, it is recommended to use a combined repellent system: use ultrasound, laser, and bioacoustics alternately. Some argue that ultrasound will be better, but do not forget that with prolonged use, people may develop health problems.

Radical methods of struggle

If all methods of scaring away birds do not bring results, and a person no longer knows how to deal with them further, then one can move on to the most radical measures. In extreme cases, poison will help remove pigeons from your balcony.

The most widely used drug is diazinon from pigeons. This product is highly effective and is sold as a liquid inside plastic bottles. It is an intestinal insecticide. Such solutions are used to process grain mixtures and feed that are fed to birds.

The drug is safe for humans, but kills birds. As a result, other pigeons avoid such feeding areas.

Representatives of the pigeon family are destroyed by adding sawdust to the food. Inside the bird's crop, they swell and block the passage of food. As a result of decomposition, birds are poisoned by decay products. You can also kill pigeons with a concentrated solution of potassium permanganate, the amount of which is prepared at the rate of 2 g of manganese per 1 kg of live weight.

In any case, bird corpses must be disposed of immediately by burning them.

Barriers

The mechanical method allows you to get rid of pigeons landing on window sills and balcony railings, but such a palisade does not look very aesthetically pleasing. However, the advantages of barriers outweigh the disadvantages.

The barrier looks like plastic tape. On one side it is covered with an adhesive substance, on the other it is equipped with a palisade of plastic spikes. Stick it on horizontal surfaces. Sometimes you can find a modification of such a barrier, attached with screws.

Before purchasing a barrier, you will have to measure the length of the surface that needs to be protected.

The chemical version of the barrier repeats the old Russian method of protecting wooden fortresses in winter. Instead of water, window sills and railings are lubricated with compounds that make the horizontal surface very slippery. This way you can get rid of all the pigeons that have occupied the balcony. But the balcony canopy is inconvenient to handle.

The manual indicates the duration of action of the composition and the required proportions.

Pigeon repeller device

Doves have always been considered a symbol of peace and tranquility. With their help, people used to send messages to each other and used them as a source of food. Today the situation has changed, and the once revered bird has become equated with a cesspool rat. It is quite unpleasant when a pigeon, spending half a day in a garbage can, then sits on the balcony and leaves its excrement there.

DIY pigeon repeller

A pigeon repeller is currently quite a popular item, because the population of birds is growing every day and occupies more and more new territories, and meanwhile the bird is a carrier of many diseases that are extremely dangerous to the human body.

Why are pigeons dangerous?

The presence of a flock produces a large amount of droppings, which is not only unsightly, but also harmful - plants die, metal rusts. At agricultural enterprises, pigeons can heavily contaminate grain. In addition, pigeons are carriers of serious diseases (ornithosis, encephalitis, salmonellosis). However, scientists from the University of Missouri consider the likelihood of human infection to be low.

However, few people know that a thick layer of pigeon droppings on the eaves is a source of fungal infection. Histoplasmosis affects a person's lungs and sometimes leads to death.

Obviously, the excessive importunity of pigeons needs to be combated. At the very least, you shouldn’t feed them on the balcony, as some city dwellers do. To avoid nesting, do not leave trash or old furniture in areas accessible to birds. Farmers need to take care to properly store grain and, if possible, make it difficult for birds to access water.

Active methods: effects on the senses

So, if neither scarecrows nor passive protection give 100% results due to the characteristics of your area, where birds on the roof of a house are a pressing problem, proceed to active action. Let's put it this way: birds have been living with people for a long time. They have adapted to humans and even city noise does not bother them, and therefore sometimes the listed methods are not enough. Then “heavy artillery” comes into play in the form of special installations, the operation of which requires electricity. Abroad, for example, it is popular to conduct a small current through the roof. It doesn't kill birds, but it doesn't create a pleasant feeling for them. True, such work requires certain qualifications and is not always safe:

Therefore, if a little noise from the eyes of predators is not enough, then you should trust modern technology. When choosing a bird repeller for the roof for your home, focus on indicators such as:

  • range of action, which will depend on your territory;
  • scope of use (whether you choose a model for an industrial complex or your small suburban area);
  • way of eating. For example, all acoustic and ultrasonic models must be plugged into an outlet.

Let's look at their types and popular models.

Most often, bioacoustic repellers are used against pigeons and their comrades. They repeat special sounds to scare away birds - the calls of feathered predators, gunshots or the like.

Let's look at some models:

Modern ultrasonic devices detect the presence of birds at a distance of up to 15 meters. They react to movement in the atmosphere, although they do not always work well in closed areas.

There are also laser devices that are mostly used in closed areas. The next option is propane guns, but they are not very popular for use on residential roofs.

And in the most difficult cases, experts advise using complex devices that allow you to both get rid of birds under the roof of a house and scare them away in an open area. True, they are large in size and will consume a lot of electricity. But sometimes you can’t do without them, unfortunately.

How do you deal with these uninvited guests?

Why is it necessary to protect your roof from birds?

Who doesn't dream of a country house? The proximity of nature, pleasant coolness in the heat, the chirping of birds and clean air. But with birds you can get not only singing in the morning, but also certain problems, of which unsanitary conditions and dirt are not all of them.

Damage to roof and gutters

Sometimes these winged creatures gather in flocks on roofs and are especially dangerous for metal roofs. Due to scratches, the protective zinc layer is damaged and the sheets begin to rust. It all looks disastrous later.

Birds also carry dangerous diseases for people, and it is not necessary to touch them - it is enough that their excrement is washed off the roof by rain into the drain and ends up in the soil of the garden. Moreover, bird waste is also chemically active, which does not have the best effect on the life of roofing materials. And the dirt on the roof itself is unlikely to make anyone happy.

Nests and birds under the roof

Birds love not only to sit on the roof, but also to build their nests on the facade, in those places where the cladding adjoins the walls and other convenient corners. The situation is especially dangerous if the bird decided to leave its nest right in the chimney, and you did not know about it. In this case, a fire may occur at the first kindling. Not to mention that the ashes from the nest contain resin and remain on the walls of the chimney for a long time. Also, if the nest is large enough, the smoke will immediately go into the room, because will not find a way out of the pipe. And in this case, people may already suffer.

But destroying nests is a cruel method and prohibited by law. It’s better to take care of something else: how to drive birds out from under the roof of a house humanely, reliably and safely for the illegal occupants themselves:

Why isn’t it enough to just scare these creatures a couple of times? And what’s really bad about a couple of regulars who have taken a fancy to the roof of your house? Believe me, not a single roofing manufacturer ever expects their product to be scratched with dirty claws, spoiled with something caustic, and tried to tear off a piece with a sharp beak. By doing nothing, you not only endanger your health, but also significantly reduce the service life of the roof and its additional elements. And the most vulnerable place for bird droppings in a house is the facades. They are extremely difficult to clean after such contamination.

But we hasten to reassure you: all modern methods that allow us to solve the problem of how to protect a roof from birds are quite civilized and environmentally friendly. All methods of bird protection for the roof of a residential building can be divided into two main groups: active and passive. In the case of passive ones, everything must be done to ensure that the roof of your house is no longer attractive to birds. Active methods involve exposing birds to sounds, electric shocks, or more technologically advanced repellers:

Several methods to evict pigeons from windowsills and balconies

1. To drive away annoying pigeons from the balcony, install a mosquito net. Then they will not be able to fly inside through the open door.

2. Foil is an effective and affordable method to scare away pigeons from the windowsill. Cut the material into strips and hang around the perimeter at a height of five centimeters. The foil will rustle and give off glare, which will scare and discourage annoying birds.

3. Instead of foil, you can use CDs or DVDs. They also emit glare that scares away birds. Make a garland or other similar decoration from the products and hang it inside and outside the balcony or window sill.

4. Bring a device with loud music near the pigeons. It could be a phone, speaker, tablet, and so on. Loud and heavy music scares away birds.

5. Cats and cats will help protect your balcony from birds. Birds really don't like such pets. And even if the cat is not hunting, the birds will still sense danger and fly away. If your pet hunts and plays, be careful. Be sure to put strong nets on the windows so that the cat does not accidentally fall out of the balcony.

6. Several powerful jets of water can drive away the pigeons. After such a shower and water procedures, they will not want to settle on the balcony or windowsill.

7. Install an aromatic air freshener with a citrus or other strong scent.

8. Attach a slinky toy to the canopy of a balcony or window in the form of a spiral with turns over three centimeters. Then the birds will feel uncomfortable sitting.

9. Place mothballs on the windowsill. Interestingly, they repel both moths and pigeons. It turns out that the latter also cannot stand the smell of mothballs. However, in a strong wind, the balls will immediately be blown away.

10. You can make a hunting noose from strong thread. Place grain next to the trap. When the bird flies, catch it and then release it through another window. When you catch two or three pigeons in this way, they will not return here again.

11. Try to trick the birds and instead of grain, add hot spices, such as pepper or dry mustard. Sprinkle the products in areas where pigeons often roost. Such deception will disappoint the birds, and they will not return here.

12. Hang several tin cans along the windowsill or balcony. They will hit each other, rattle and make an unpleasant sound for the pigeons.

13. Scarecrow is an old and proven method of fighting pigeons and other birds. It will be useful not only in the field and in the garden. A small scarecrow can also be built for the balcony. Take an old soft toy with shiny glass eyes. Artificial stuffed crows or birds of prey (owl, hawk) are perfect, since pigeons are not friendly with these types of birds.

It is important that the scarecrow is more than one and a half meters high

14. A bird repeller is a special device that looks like a radio. It makes unpleasant sounds that scare away pigeons and sparrows, crows, starlings and other types of birds. This is a very effective, albeit expensive, method of weaning pigeons from sitting on the windowsill.

15. Spread the balcony canopy or window sill with Vaseline or vegetable oil. When landing, the birds will begin to slide and will not be able to land properly.

16. Red pepper helps a lot. Sprinkle it on the visor and the birds will not fly.

17. Paint the window sill with silver paint. It glitters in the sun, which scares away birds. They won't even sit on the window.

18. If you have started the problem and the pigeons have built a nest on the balcony, experts advise replacing the eggs with similar objects. These can be light stones or pieces of chalk. You can destroy the nest. In both cases, the birds will simply fly away and are unlikely to return.

Visual Aids

Theoretically, they should instill fear in pigeons with just their appearance. Such means include:

  • reflective tapes;
  • shiny metal rods suspended freely from the balcony roof;
  • windmills with mirrors;
  • balloons with painted eyes filled with helium;
  • stuffed animals or models of birds of prey;
  • cat.

A cat has a very indirect relationship with visual aids. At first, seeing her through the glass, the pigeons will be scared. Then they will figure it out and stop being afraid. If the cat is a hunter, and goes from a visual medium to a material one, there is a risk of losing the animal. Many cats fall from balconies because they try to catch pigeons.

How to get rid of pigeons

City birds are practically not afraid of people, so the question of how to repel pigeons from the windowsill is far from idle. Decisive measures do not always give quick results; the fight against birds can drag on. There are several effective methods to help rid people of unpleasant neighborhoods.

Repellent

City pigeons are inquisitive, and under certain circumstances they show ostentatious impudence. Despite this, they are afraid of loud and sharp sounds, shiny objects and predators. Your own imagination will tell you how to scare away pigeons from the windowsill.

To prevent birds from landing on the canopy, you can do the following:

  1. attach shiny CDs under the window;
  2. stick a fringe of shiny foil onto the surface;
  3. install a stuffed hawk on the visor;
  4. install acoustic speakers.

Music should be used with caution as an irritant. Loud noises may disturb neighbors

An ultrasonic pigeon repeller is ideal as a deterrent. The device emits high-frequency radiation, which birds cannot tolerate. Ultrasound is safe for human health. The device can be purchased at a specialized pet store.

Discomfort

To prevent pigeons from landing on the windowsill, you need to make its surface inconvenient for landing. A fishing line or sharp wire stretched along the visor will help make it difficult for birds to land softly. The surface of the window sill can be coated with slippery oil or Vaseline. You can also sprinkle hot spices (pepper, mustard) over the surface of the visor. From time to time, spices need to be replaced with fresh ones.

Birds often fly from a nearby attic or loggia. City dwellers often think about how to get rid of pigeons in the attic. You can sprinkle poison in the attic, or put a cat there.

Radical methods of fighting pigeons

Radical measures should be used only in cases where other methods do not help. In urban environments, shooting birds and animals is prohibited. These measures are not humane, and a dead bird may fall into a hard-to-reach area. During decomposition, the carcass becomes a source of infection.

The townspeople do not know how to poison the pigeons without harming others. The following agents are used as poisons:

  1. intestinal insecticide Diazinon;
  2. drug Granozan;
  3. salt;
  4. sawdust;
  5. nicotine sulfate solution;
  6. concentrated solution of potassium permanganate.

To prepare the poison, it is enough to treat the grain intended for birds with Diazinon or a solution of potassium permanganate. If you add sawdust to your food, you can effectively get rid of birds. When sawdust gets into the crop, it swells, blocking the flow of food into the stomach. The bird dies from poisoning by food breakdown products. You can poison birds with a solution of nicotine sulfate; to do this, just treat the surface of the window sill with it.

Often, apartment owners do not know how to deal with pigeons that have taken a liking to the windowsill and do not want to leave their homes. These birds are quite smart. It is enough to catch one pigeon, the others will learn their lesson and stop flying to the windowsill.

You can use the recommendation on how to make a pigeon trap with your own hands. A loop made from ordinary fishing line is suitable as a trap. You should place the food on top of the loop under the window and wait for the bird to climb into the trap. A tight loop will prevent it from flying away. To prevent the bird from flying away, you can throw a blanket and blanket over it.

Specialized stores sell ready-made traps that can be used to quickly catch a bird.

Any of the above methods should help get rid of the birds. If all else fails, as a last resort you can contact a specialized service. Bird catching services are not cheap, but pigeons will never fly to the windowsill again.

Prevention

To prevent pigeons from choosing a particular place where a person lives, it is better to prevent their appearance in advance. To do this, it is important to carry out the following activities.

  • Cleaning the area from debris and grains. Timely cleaning of areas where pigeons like to be will help prevent their reappearance. Nests under construction must be discarded immediately. All branches, grains, and feathers must be disposed of. Then there will be no smell, which is what pigeons fly to in the future.
  • Protection of rooms and attics. It is better to protect all windows, cracks, and ventilation ducts with grilles. Then the birds will not be able to get inside and make a mess. A simple mesh is very cheap, but can make life much easier for the owners of the premises.
  • Purity. It’s a paradox, but pigeons land more often on a dusty and cluttered windowsill or balcony. It is possible that they see food everywhere. Therefore, in order to protect your home from these birds, you need to try to keep everything clean.

Fighting pigeons can be difficult, but if you act systematically and persistently, the birds will soon stop flying. Don’t lose hope and use the suggested methods, and they will definitely help you.

To learn how to get rid of pigeons, watch the following video.

A serious problem in almost all cities of the world is large flocks of rock pigeons, which are difficult to get rid of. Initially, this synanthropic bird species nested in rocks. After the emergence of cities, birds decided that houses with attics, balconies and protective canopies were not inferior to rocks, and in some ways even superior. Today it is almost impossible to get rid of pigeons who have decided to exchange rocks for city houses. In the city, the pigeon has everything: places for nesting and dumps for obtaining food. But pigeons are dangerous neighbors who are best admired from afar, rather than on your own balcony.

Basic parameters when choosing

The choice of bird repellers is huge

So that buyers do not get confused when purchasing, they should pay attention to several nuances:

  1. First of all, you need to consider the range of the device. This information can be found directly on the packaging or on the manufacturer's website.
  2. Not all devices are easy to use. While most of them are easy to install and turn on without even looking at the instructions, a small part of them still require special care, which only a professional can do. In order to avoid unnecessary expenses, it is better to choose a simple model.
  3. If the region experiences very cold winters or heavy rains, which not every device can withstand. Devices that are not waterproof must be additionally protected with a canopy.
  4. Where the bird repellent is powered can also matter. All of them can be divided into three categories: portable, stationary and autonomous. The latter appeared relatively recently, they are powered by solar panels. Portable devices are powered by batteries, which need to be changed, but not often. Stationary ones require connection to an electrical outlet, which may not be located near the site or field.
  5. If the gadget can adjust the power, this is a plus. In a small area, the signal strength can be reduced, thereby saving battery energy.

You should pay attention to which birds the repeller works on.

Repellents

Pigeons are not bedbugs, but they can also be scared by the smell of spices. Birds may not like strong smells. It is guaranteed that they will not like it if you pour spices directly into the nest. But getting rid of guests on the railing will be more difficult. The main problem is that spices will not last long on narrow surfaces on the street side. They need to be “fixed” somehow. You can make a paste and apply it to the railings.

After the rain, the balcony with “repellents” will look very dirty, and it is unlikely that you will be able to get rid of the birds.

Ways to scare away birds

First of all, you should understand the reasons for the increased interest of birds in your area. It is quite possible that your family members or neighbors feed them. If the cause of constant pigeon raids is not the provoking behavior of people, then you will need to take serious care in purchasing repellents and installing them on the site.

Such devices, depending on the principle of their operation, can be divided into several types:

  • visual bird repeller
  • ultrasonic, the principle of which is to produce high-frequency sounds
  • bioacoustic
  • sound

Of course, all these devices have different types, dimensions and costs.

Bioacoustic repellent systems

An electronic device that records an alarming bird message is called a bioacoustic repeller. It can be designed for a specific type of bird, or it can be universal. The device reproduces sounds that were recorded in real conditions through special moisture-resistant speakers, which allows you to use the device in any weather conditions. Used to repel birds from:

  • balcony;
  • architectural structures;
  • residential, office buildings;
  • food industry enterprises;
  • private farms where livestock are raised.

The most effective ways

Loud noise is an effective remedy; pigeons cannot tolerate it. You can just open the door and shout at the pigeons. But be careful, you might scare your neighbors. Another good way is to throw firecrackers, but they can also cause discomfort to other residents.

An effective, but quite noisy way is loud music. Place the tape recorder on the balcony and turn it on full blast. Choose music that is as loud and heavy as possible, such as rock. Birds will definitely fly as far as possible from your balcony. Loud sounds create discomfort for birds. We recommend performing sound therapy periodically to get rid of annoying birds forever. But don't scare the neighbors.

If your neighbors don't like noisy people, buy a laser pointer. The beam will cause unbearable irritation to the birds. They will fly away immediately. Such devices are used at airports for the same purposes, so you can be sure of their effectiveness. In addition, using such pointers is quite simple - you can drive away birds while on the balcony or the ground. You can even drive away those who have settled on the roof.

Use a toy gun spraying a thin stream of water. The disadvantage of this method is that each bird needs to be shot several times in order to completely discourage it from settling on your balcony.

Usually 3 hits are enough, but note that the birds may return tomorrow. You have to pour water on them for several days

There are also homemade things to scare away. Take the foil and cut the bottom part into a fringe shape. Hang the foil on the balcony, preferably several pieces of material at once. This creates an unpleasant sound that scares away birds. And the foil glitters in the sun, which pigeons cannot stand.

Another unusual option is to use an audio cassette tape. We tie it on a rope, making it into a curtain shape. You can place the film randomly. Not only will the film reflect glare that is unpleasant for pigeons, but it will also rustle. The pigeons will definitely be scared. A good use for unwanted cassettes.

The next method is quite funny and children will definitely like it. You can buy some balloons, blow them up and draw scary faces on them. Ask the children, they will definitely cope with this. Hang balloons around the balcony. Oddly enough, these faces scare pigeons.

You can buy moisture-resistant tape and stick it to the place where the pigeons land. Leave it for a while. The pigeons will feel uncomfortable sitting on it and will fly away.

There are special drugs against pigeons. You can smear them on the area where the birds sit. The surface may become too slippery or produce an odor that is unbearable for birds.

If it is not possible to install objects on the balcony

Sometimes there is no opportunity or desire to use objects to scare away pigeons. In such cases, you can create unbearable conditions for them that will force the birds to fly away on their own.

An effective way is to smear Vaseline on the places where pigeons constantly sit. The smeared product will cause the bird's paws to slip. Unbearable conditions will simply force uninvited guests to look for another place.

Another effective method is to sprinkle spices around the room. For example, cinnamon, cloves or various types of peppers. Such odors cause severe irritation in birds. The advantages of this method are that the spices do not harm either people or animals, and it is easier to remove a mixture of dry pepper from the balcony than the remains of birds.

Another way is to stretch the line 50mm above where the pigeons are sitting. This humane method will simply prevent the birds from landing. They will fly away in search of a place where there are no obstacles to sit

The best method is a pet. Your cat or dog will be happy to protect their favorite balcony, especially if they like to sleep on it in the summer. If birds often see pets on the balcony, they will not settle in it; they are smart enough and know how dangerous predatory animals are.

Passive methods: restriction and protection from birds

Almost all active methods of protecting birds are either expensive, or look ridiculous on the roof, or interfere with people’s lives too. Therefore, if your problem is one or two frequent birds, try to get by with small expenses and crafts from improvised means.

It’s simple: in total, all birds always choose places for themselves not only to live, but also to breed their offspring there. Therefore, the more difficulties you create for them, the less they will want to fly to you.

Wire and mesh over the roof

First of all, try to prevent the birds from simply landing on the roof. To do this, as an option, a fishing line or wire is pulled at a height of 5 cm from the surface of the roofing, and this provides good protection for the roof from birds. In addition, it is quite difficult for birds to stay on such thin threads.

Sometimes voluminous bird protection nets are needed for the roof of a house, with large or small cells, made of plastic or metal. But they often do not look entirely aesthetically pleasing. Although sometimes there is no other way out, and such obstacles do not always have to hang constantly.

The installation principle of this material is simple: a special bird protection net is stretched directly over the roof and secured to special posts.

Anti-seize spikes

These are point devices that allow you to completely solve the problem of getting rid of birds on the roof - namely on the ridge and eaves. Today, special tapes with spikes on a metal or polymer base are sold. They are invisible on the roof, and it is safe for the birds themselves. When they fly up to the roof, they will see the spikes and simply will not sit on them.

This bird protection device consists of sections, usually 25 cm long, and on each of them, pieces of metal wire in the shape of the letter V are located in two rows:

These devices are fixed to the cornice and ridge using self-tapping screws or special glue. However, for such an installation you need to have experience working at heights. If you feel unsure even on a stepladder, then the installation of spikes can be ordered from specialized companies.

Due to the fact that the base of the spikes is made of flexible plastic, such an element can be mounted on any surface. These devices do not need to be plugged into an outlet, and the plastic base is usually transparent enough to be invisible on the surface of the roof and not spoil its appearance.

Also, anti-spike spikes are durable, withstand exposure to open atmosphere, and are not afraid of temperature changes, rain or snow. Both plastic and steel needles last at least 3 years:

Optical gel with oils

The next type of bird repeller is gel. It is also called optical. This liquid is made from completely natural ingredients that do not harm either the environment or the birds themselves:

The optical gel is based on an oil-based composite base that is resistant enough to wind, snow or rain. Oils, due to their special structure, create a thin impermeable film that allows the composition not to evaporate in the heat. Such repellers are successfully used in conditions of heavy rainfall and 30-degree frosts.

Ventilation outlet protection

In addition to the roof surface itself, birds love to enter the attic space through eaves, valleys, dormer windows and ridges. Therefore, it is important to carefully close all the openings, install blinds on the dormer windows, hem the overhang of the cornice and close the vents with grilles. And for eaves today, a special roofing mesh against insects and birds with a fine-mesh structure is sold. It is also called ventilation tape, and it is good because it provides reliable protection for the roof, but does not interfere with air flow in the under-roof space.

But a lot depends on the material used. Thus, a plastic bird net for roofing is similar to perforated tape and is also used to get rid of insects, but is limited in width - only 7 cm:

Bird netting for roofing made of stainless steel, with small cells of 2-3 mm, is considered more practical. For ridges and junctions, it is better to take material 15-25 cm wide. Professional bird netting for roofing is also sold: it will not be difficult to buy one at any building materials store. But for curtain rods you need to take a roll at least a meter wide. This is fixed using self-tapping screws with a press washer or nails with a wide head.

Stainless steel bird netting for roofing is more durable and not subject to corrosion, but will cost more than plastic netting. And steel is not at all suitable for such tasks, since after some time it will begin to rust and rot, leaving unsightly streaks on the walls of the house.

Another option is to cover the eaves overhangs with painting mesh, especially where there are small gaps. It is laid overlapping and attached to the wooden elements of the roof. As a budget option, it is also suitable for air skates. The truth does not last long, and the birds themselves manage to tear it. By the way, ventilation elements for ridges and overhangs are good not only as a passive repellent for birds, but also as a barrier to such unpleasant insects as hornets or wasps. They also like to organize a nest for themselves and breed offspring in a dry, warm hiding place.

A good alternative to eaves mesh is a special comb for eaves overhangs:

Modern soffit made of metal or plastic will also help protect the cornices. This is an element of the roofing system that represents a whole system of slats and covers the lower part of the roof, giving it a finished look. It looks much more solid than mesh and has a variety of materials and designs. It also allows you to mount lighting inside, which is especially convenient:

Rustle and glare near the roof

Sometimes special silver ribbons are used for the roof, which rustle in the wind and shimmer brightly in the sun. They scare birds with their rustle and shine, but they only work effectively in sunny weather. But during periods of cloudiness and rain, they are of little use.

In addition, only forest birds, small field birds, starlings and thrushes do not like such “decorations”. But pigeons, crows, sparrows and rooks do not react to them at all. Also good in this regard is a special pinwheel for scaring away birds, or its budget version - a craft made from a plastic bottle. It is cut out in the center and the blades are bent. It turns out to be a good craft, with foil ribbons glued to the blades and mounted on a wooden stick.

Under the influence of the wind, the turntable rotates and a good roof protection against birds comes out from scrap materials. Especially if the problem is not acute.

Balls with eyes among the foliage

Another popular approach is to play with the birds. For every animal there is always an even more dangerous one, and often from its own species - this is what the laws of nature say. And birds have their enemies, also among the birds. This is a kite, a hawk, an owl. But it doesn’t have to be about him, it’s enough just to imitate his presence. For example, hang three-dimensional 3D images on a tree near the roof. We are talking about vinyl balls of different colors and patterns that imitate the eyes of predators. Such toys are especially popular in the USA and Europe, where they like to hang gardens and areas around the house with them.

But this is not exactly protection specifically for the roof - rather for the garden and its fruits, but it helps to repel “guests” from the entire site with the house in addition. Additionally, for a special effect, eyeballs are hung near the speakers, from where the cries of birds of prey are heard.

Figures on the corners of the roof

Another way is to make or buy a model of a feathered predator and install it in the right places on the roof. These should be life-size figurines of a hawk, owl or eagle owl. Birds see such silhouettes even from the height of their flight. By the way, summer residents often make models themselves, for example, from polystyrene foam or wood, at the same time devoting their souls to pleasant creativity:

But, as practice shows, this method is the least effective of all existing ones. Even timid tits quickly realize that the enemy is not real and happily sit on these stuffed animals’ heads. The whole problem is that the layouts are motionless, and therefore do not scare anyone away.

Surprised? Yes, the range of sensory perception of a bird is not similar to that of a human, but birds also have intelligence, and therefore they are not so easy to deceive!

But how to get rid of birds under the roof of a house if passive methods do not help? Okay, two or three birds who for some reason like to visit you, but sometimes you have to deal with a whole flock. Then, as an option, sometimes they even call a special ornithological service to rid the roof of birds. But constantly using its services is expensive. Therefore, try something more effective than trying to block access to the roof.

Antibiotic Rodotium - your pigeons are protected from diseases!
Cross monks - noble representatives of the German breed of pigeons Grivuna - a diamond decoration of the sky loona: What idiocy! Poison, thorns, needles. Where did you grow up and what kind of non-humans were you brought up with? Disgrace! The old lady next door feeds these winged rats on her windowsill! The glass and window sills of other residents' apartments are dirty with these creatures. I destroyed several scum with a stick (since they are stupid). We tell grandma to feed them somewhere on the street, but the old cat doesn’t understand anything and continues her work... So you, defender of fucking pigeons, breed them in your apartment and enjoy heaps of crap.

The same bullshit, only I’m also on the 1st floor, and everyone from above is feeding these pigeons. I hate their hooting and constantly crap windows(((

I bought a Bird Away ultrasonic device for testing, placed it outside the window, it seems like the seals have stopped landing on the visor for a week or two, while there is no more running around the visor, the landings have stopped and the humming has stopped. As soon as it begins to get light, they are already warming up along the canopy, I will continue to watch if I can scare them off. I bought a second such device in the same online store, for the other side of the apartment, but so far I have enough of one, in this online store there are a lot of different ultrasonic devices from different birds right up to anti-landing spokes for visors...

For me, the most effective thing was to install the sititek Pegasus ultrasonic repeller with a motion sensor. In addition, the solar battery allows you to work all summer without recharging. For a long time I tried to persuade my neighbor not to feed the pigeons, but I couldn’t persuade her. Now she feeds them in front of the entrance, because now they don’t fly up to the balcony.

And besides all of the above, fleas spill from them into the apartment. I was tired of doing sanitation, at first I didn’t understand where from? And somehow I saw it myself - they were jumping back and forth through the mosquito net! That's right - these are not birds, these are flying rats - flea-filled and crusty!

Kind people. HOW SORRY I AM FOR YOU ALL. I hope LIFE punishes you all. With your bullying, and rats, as you say. I have two dovecotes. And I know that birds are much more humane than people like you.

A little about pigeons

So that you know the enemy by sight. Pigeons live in cities all year round, do not fly anywhere and try to stay close to people - where there is food.

  • They make nests in residential buildings, on roofs, under bridges, and in fire chimneys. Not in the trees.
  • In large cities, flocks of pigeons number from 500 to 1000 individuals.
  • Pigeons are called “flying rats” , since they are also difficult to exterminate (although it already seems that rats are easier), the droppings are difficult to wipe off and pollute sidewalks, roads, houses, monuments, etc.
  • The average life expectancy of a pigeon in the city is only 5 years. These data are due to risk factors. Pigeons are hunted by animals, they often get hit by cars, etc. In captivity (in a dovecote), an adult bird can live 15 years or more.

Why are there so many pigeons on the city streets?

If you live with this problem, you have probably asked yourself this question. After all, the pigeon flies specifically to you (or to your house), since there are many of them in your area.

Kind people feed the birds. There is a lot of food near the garbage containers. Pigeons sit on wires, shitting on cars and people.

But what to do with them? They're pigeons! You won't punish me.

Therefore, the problem is truly all-Russian.

Stuffed animals and dummies of birds of prey

Many wrote that it helped them. Give it a try.

My pigeons were afraid for the first 30 minutes. Then they sat next to the plastic crow like good old friends.

It is necessary to place not just a figurine of a bird, but a predatory one (owl, crow, kite, eagle, etc.). Those who are afraid of pigeons.
