How to conveniently arrange things in a closet?
Your “Nothing to Wear” has nowhere to put it!
A phrase that every husband will subscribe to.
I have written more than one useful article about wardrobe revision and analysis! Today we’ll talk about whether order in the closet is achievable and exactly how you can arrange and hang all things and accessories on shelves and hangers so that all the necessary clothes are always at hand!
Every girl is familiar with Narnia. And he knows exactly where this very Narnia is. In her closet with clothes. That’s for sure - a magical world in which it is unclear what goes where and where everything is. In the most severe cases, unable to withstand the pressure of magic from within, the doors of the closet fall off or the shelves collapse. This happened to me with my shoe closet.
How many times when going through your wardrobe do you say: “Oh, what a cute blouse-skirt-sandals! Wow, I completely forgot about them!” Or, having acquired another new thing, you remember that somewhere in the depths... on the farthest shelf... the new is the well-forgotten old, yeah. Now in duplicate.
It doesn't matter what you wear, it matters how you feel
“I want to die in my blue jeans,” said Andy Warhol. In a sense, our whole life is a constant creativity, and the choice of clothes is no exception. We choose what to buy and how to wear it, and the main criterion is truly pleasure. You should be pleased with what is stored in your closets, so that when you open the door, your eye will immediately catch the “same” thing. Clear out the closets in your apartment with the Attic and start creating!
VISIBLE SPOT
The saying “out of sight, out of mind” also affects memory when it comes to wardrobe. If you don't see a thing, then, as a rule, you don't remember it. And the result is the same sets of things that are constantly in sight. Boring. All you have to do is arrange things so that they can be seen. This, in my opinion, is the main purpose of organizing your wardrobe.
A clothing dump can bring another unpleasant surprise: suppose you suddenly remember a beautiful cardigan that hasn’t been worn for a hundred years. And we decided to take him for a walk. And when they took it out of the deposits, they discovered that it was all crumpled and there were no buttons. It’s good if you have time to put it in order and a button, but what if not? In this case, the item is very often sent back to the pile, where it will lie until it is thrown away or given away. And you could wear it with pleasure.
Do you think this is a rather bleak picture?
So, let's begin to restore world harmony within the framework of a single wardrobe. First you need to determine in what position each item will be stored. Will it hang on a hanger, put it on a shelf, or be stored in a box? The storage method depends, first of all, on the purpose of the item, the type of material and frequency of use.
Where do unnecessary things come from?
For different people, the “extra” category may include things that differ in style and purpose. What one person won’t wear may become another’s favorite clothing. Therefore, we will consider as superfluous that thing that for some reason does not find use and simply lies in the closet.
Often such clothes are bought spontaneously: for example, they simply liked them, they were sold at a big discount, they were received in a store instead of change, or they could be the second and third items purchased on a promotion.
The opposite situation: washed out but favorite jeans, a stretched out cozy sweater, a dress from a “past life”. You don’t want to part with such things; they remind you of pleasant events or people, especially if you received them as a gift.
Often, deposits in the wardrobe are formed from clothes put aside for the moment “when I lose weight”, “when I go to the sea”, “what if it comes in handy”, “I’ll fix it and wear it”, etc.
To clean up the mess in things, you first need to put your thoughts in order.
HANGERS
Now let’s take hold of the hangers and throw out all the wire misunderstandings, slanted planks and plastic monsters 3 sizes too large that have crept into your closet. This trinity can cause irreparable damage to delicate and thin tissues or skin. Wire hangers are needed to bring clothes from the dry cleaner or workshop. All. You cannot store clothes on them! Under its own weight, the fabric stretches, and the thin frame of the hanger is very easily deformed. And, once again taking out your favorite jacket, you may find “ears” on the shoulders or sleeves (if the hanger is the wrong size), similar in shape to the ugly bubbles of sweatpants, only small. I'm not even talking about the exquisitely colored rust stains on a light jacket, for example.
Option two - wooden hangers. Just please, not the creepy two-plank designs that remember your mother’s prom dress. But wide ones with rounded ends are what you need. The only thing is that things can easily slip off from patent-leather hangers, so fasten the buttons. The advantages of such hangers are at the same time their disadvantage: they are solid, beautiful, take up a lot of space in the closet and are expensive. Such a Bentley among hangers. This category, very beautiful and very expensive, includes hangers covered with leather.
If functionality is most important to you, then welcome to the world of plastic hangers. But not powerful cast monsters on which you can hang knight's armor, and nothing will survive. The crossbar next to the closet will probably break. Plastic hangers are very convenient for putting things in order. Lightweight, functional, for delicate thin fabrics there are silicone pads so that silk or cambric does not slip off.
The most ideal, in my experience, are vinyl coated hangers. If anyone is sad about the thinness of wire, this is the place for you. They are almost as thin, but they no longer pull clothes because of their size, a lot of them can fit in a closet, and the special coating, that same vinyl (yes, it turns out that not only records are made from it), does not allow them to slip and become deformed even the thinnest and most delicate fabrics.
A general rule for all hangers: they should be the right size for you! It is necessary. Too large will cause bubbles on the sleeves, and too small will cause bubbles on the shoulders.
It is also recommended that all hangers be the same, so that when you open the closet, you see an orderly row of hanging clothes, and not sleeves and shoulders sticking out at random.
A few words about fabric hangers: they look very cute, ideal for thin blouses, but take up a lot of space. One way out: take out one or two shelves in a closet with shelves, nail a crossbar in the resulting space and hang soft hangers with blouses on it.
A general rule for everyone: hangers should be smooth, with recesses for straps or special loops for skirts or dresses. Some models have a crossbar or tucks for trousers. Whether you use them or not is up to you. Just keep in mind that in this position the trousers may wrinkle.
If ironing is not so scary for you, then you can save space by purchasing these hangers for your trousers.
What is not recommended to be stored on hangers is knitwear, especially thin ones, woolen sweaters, cardigans and other fabrics that can deform under their own weight. It is best to fold them in neat piles, sorted by density.
A little trick: alternate in one pile, say, sweaters or tops, bright and dark. This way they will be more noticeable and will not merge with each other. The same stacks are convenient for storing jeans.
Some people prefer to store knitted items vertically in a chest of drawers or drawers, as the Japanese do. To learn more about this method, read Marie Kondo's book The Magic of Tidying Up. But let me note right away that this method is not suitable for everyone. Didn't suit me. Things get very wrinkled
And this is a life hack for girls who especially like to plan everything. I learned about it from my basic course student, who approached all tasks very responsibly.
After a total revision of her wardrobe, she photographed ALL her looks, sent them to me, we adjusted them a little, and then she just took and hung her photos on the inside of the closet doors. She no longer faced the question of “what to wear.”
I think it's brilliant!
Out of sight, out of mind!
First of all, you need to audit your wardrobe. But how do you know what to keep, what to give away, what to give away, what to sell, and what to put in storage? We act boldly and decisively. To organize a new clothing storage system, you need to demolish the old one. Take all the clothes out of all the closets onto the floor of the room. Done? Now go to the pantry, to the balcony, climb onto the mezzanine and don’t forget about the dryer - you need to find absolutely all the clothes in the house.
What to do next? Distribute all clothes into 4 groups:
1. Broken, overly soiled, torn and worn-out clothes that cannot be repaired or washed - all this should be thrown into the trash.
2. Clothes in good condition, but which either don’t fit you, or you don’t like anymore (remember that clothes should bring pleasure), or you’ve already bought a more fashionable and new item of the same style as a replacement. Items from this group can be donated to a charity shop, given to friends or family, or sold online.
3. Seasonal clothing - separately summer items and separately all winter items. Everything that is irrelevant for the current season should be put into storage, but under no circumstances should you temporarily fill the shelves of your closets with excess clothes - you will need them for something else!
4. The fourth group is all other items of clothing. Test yourself with a simple list of questions:
- Do I like this thing?
- Do I wear it at least once every one to two weeks?
- Does it fit my current style and can easily be combined with other items?
- Is this item seasonal?
If your answer to all questions is “yes,” then these clothes need to be included in the new storage system.
BAGS: HOW TO STORE IN THE CLOSET?
In the lower (or upper) part of the cabinet, in special cases, stuffed with paper inside. This way, creases do not form on them, and the surface does not get dirty.
Of course, there is not always enough space in the closet for bags. There will be much more space for them in a full-fledged dressing room.
Small bags and crossbody can be conveniently hung on hooks. You can use a regular scarf hanger or special hangers, like in the picture on the right.
Or order such hanging organizers on AliExpress
Belts, scarves, shawls. Welcome to IKEA! This is truly a paradise for lovers of order. Hangers, rails, boxes for accessories, storage modules, drawers with dividers - a paradise for those who like to organize everything.
Using organizers
Now it has become fashionable to store things in special organizers. In addition to the fact that they save space, sets of underwear, socks, and shoes placed in them look aesthetically pleasing.
There are different types of organizers:
- For storing bras, the best option is a container with a special liner.
- Organizers with divided small cells are suitable for storing hosiery.
- Before putting towels and bed linen in a rectangular fabric or cardboard organizer, it is recommended to sort them by size.
- It is optimal to store shoes in hanging organizers with individual pockets for each pair of shoes.
If the house has one closet or a modular system, it is advisable to store seasonal items in distant compartments. This is the only way to maximize the interior space in the closet.
HOW TO HANG SCARFS?
The main task is still the same: they must be visible, so boxes and crates are not suitable for this purpose; a moth will get to the scarf lying at the bottom of the box much faster than you. So, either in a stack on a shelf, or, if there are not many of them, hang them on special structures, of which there are many on sale.
Advantages of the Attic
The attic is a modern, warm warehouse that, among other things, stores clothes. It can store clothes made from various fabrics and materials. Its undeniable advantages:
- stable temperature of +20 degrees Celsius at any time of the year, even in winter;
- correct level of humidity thanks to ventilation;
- constant cleaning and ventilation - the warehouse is always clean;
- reliable security system, video surveillance without blind spots, access control for movers;
- comfortable service - you can return clothes in one click through the application, you do not overpay extra money - in the Attic you pay exactly for the volume of your items, and not for the volume of a certain cell.
Warehouse storage of clothes in Moscow has become simple and convenient - Attic movers come home themselves, pack everything in special wardrobe boxes and take them to a warm warehouse. All you need to do is simply empty your closets of temporarily unnecessary items and get ready for a renovated home full of free space!
BELTS AND TIES
This is where the delimiter module comes in handy. Their cells can accommodate the entire collection. Roll into a ring, not too tightly, with the buckle facing outward to avoid creases. And each one in a separate cell. Wide ones, if space allows, can be laid out flat, and corset ones can be placed vertically.
Another option is to hang them on special hangers. A belt hanger can be attached to a closet door, provided that the belts do not touch clothing (otherwise, hello, puffs!)
How to fold a T-shirt
The T-shirt will also wrinkle when stored in the closet if it is not folded correctly. Therefore, in order to save yourself from the need to once again work with an iron at the ironing board, it is better to put things in the closet neatly. And detailed instructions on how to do it correctly will help with this.
- First you need to lay the clothes on a flat surface and straighten them so that there are no wrinkles.
- Then roll the sleeves towards the center.
- After this, fold the T-shirt first along and then across.
The next method is as simple as the first:
- After laying the T-shirt on a flat surface, fold it in half lengthwise.
- Then we roll up the sleeves.
- All that remains is to fold the clothes in two or three times and put them in the closet.
UNDERWEAR AND STOCKINGS
For stockings and socks, dividers will again come in handy. Place one of these in a drawer of the chest of drawers and the socks living there will no longer resemble a multi-colored lump of who knows what it’s made of. It is very advisable to arrange stockings and socks according to “sameness”, so that in search of the twin brother of one stocking you do not empty out the entire drawer.
With linen everything is simple. Fold the bras one cup into the other, you can put panties in the top of the set folded in this way, put the next set in the resulting structure, and so on until you run out. It is convenient to store individual items in boxes without a top, so they do not spread throughout the closet or chest of drawers.

How to organize your closet. Storing clothes in a closet
A cluttered closet is a sign of improper organization of things.
How to properly organize clothing storage
If you have one closet and it stores things from all seasons, then be sure to put things that are not suitable for the season in special containers (transparent ones are most convenient) and put them either on the lowest or on the top shelf so that they do not get in the way. Containers are much more convenient than bags because, having a rigid shape, they allow you to neatly create space in the closet. Thus, things that are currently unnecessary will take up less space and will not be an “eyesore,” making it difficult to resolve the eternal problem of “what to wear?” Make sure that there are holes in the container for air to enter, because even clean clothes, when kept in a closed plastic box, acquire a stale smell over time.
If you don't use your suitcase often, you can store rarely used items in it to save space.
Store only particularly wrinkled items on the hanger bar without creating crowding; everything else is on the shelves.
Never hang several items on top of each other on the same coat hanger. This will not save space in the closet, but it will wrinkle the clothes hanging below. And in the depths, the hung things are hidden from view, and you may forget about them or not see them at the right moment, forming an image. If the closet is small, then it is better to use thin hangers for things that save space as much as possible.
Pay attention to the quality of clothes hangers; they should be smooth on all sides so as not to leave snags on the fabrics.
If you wear a small clothing size, then pay attention to the fact that standard size hangers can stretch things, so it is better to choose small ones.
Group items into categories, separately all skirts, all trousers, all blouses, shirts and dresses. It also makes sense to separate trouser and skirt sets, because this way it will be more convenient for you to create new looks using the top or bottom separately from the set. In each group, hang things according to color scheme from dark to light.
Items with beadwork, as well as expensive vintage items, are best stored in boxes.
Tights can be placed in small paper bags, arranged by color.
How to Store Sunglasses in a Closet
Sunglasses can be stored in a transparent lunch box, as long as you choose the right size container. For example, a container measuring 29x19 cm and 6 cm high can easily fit 7 pairs of glasses. Containers with a clamp are the most convenient; they are easier to open.
Ways to store jewelry
By the way, when there is a lot of jewelry, a large number of different boxes is not as convenient as the same plastic containers for “breakfast” or transparent containers for household small items. Since they are transparent, the contents are clearly visible in them and it is easy to find the necessary accessory, and thanks to the same format and flat surface, they are convenient to stack on top of each other, which again saves space and creates order. It is possible to store jewelry in special transparent pockets attached to the inside of the cabinet door, the main thing is that the jewelry does not get tangled or scratched on the surface. If it is not possible to attach an organizer with pockets to the door, then there is a very convenient option on a dress-shaped hanger.
How to hang clothes
Before storing an item, be sure to clean it, because moths love dirty things. When using covers for outerwear, choose covers made of breathable material (to ventilate clothes) with a transparent polyethylene insert, this will make it easier to find the right item. Don't forget to put an odorless moth repellent in the case, it won't be amiss.
Knitted items should be stored folded on a shelf to prevent them from stretching out.
Some people mistakenly think that a thin ribbon sewn on the wrong side of the blouse neckline serves to prevent the neckline from stretching. But this is not so, it is sewn only so that the item does not slip off the hanger. This is convenient for stores, but when you buy this item, it is better to cut off the ribbons immediately, because when worn they tend to come out from under the clothes.
It is more convenient to store items made of silk and other slippery fabrics on rubberized hangers; they will not slide off them.
It is better to hang dresses and blouses made of delicate fabrics on soft hangers to avoid accidental snagging on the rough surface of a low-quality wooden or plastic hanger. Elegant dresses that are rarely used are best stored in a case.
By the way, if you show your imagination, you can beautifully decorate old wooden hangers using the decoupage technique and they will romantically decorate a girl’s closet. Or you can purchase ready-made decorated hangers for clothes, made by hand by private craftsmen.
It is convenient to hang clothes with straps on hangers with loops at the ends that prevent them from slipping. You can also place vests on them.
There must be aromatic sachets on the shelves; they will give things a subtle, pleasant aroma and repel moths. Synthetic fillers for sachets are not so durable, it is better to choose natural ones.
You can make the sachet yourself. For example, take a small organza bag and pour lavender flowers into it, this flavoring will last a long time, and when the smell begins to weaken, you can drop a few drops of essential oil onto the dry flowers and the sachet will smell fragrant again.
You can also add a pleasant aroma to your closet using an aroma diffuser, which can be placed on the bottom shelf.
Additionally, you can add special anti-moth products, but it is better to choose one without a scent, because synthetic fragrances added to such products can be too harsh and intrusive.
How to store trousers and skirts in the closet. Using multi-tiered clothes hangers
Jeans and denim trousers are best stored folded on a shelf.
You should not hang your trousers on the crossbar of a universal hanger, it is not practical.
It is most convenient to place classic trousers with creases on a hanger with a clip, holding the bottom of both legs. The rubberized clip hanger is more convenient. By the way, it is most rational to dry washed trousers on such a hanger; they are easier to iron later.
Trouser hangers with clips are inconvenient, but they are perfect for storing skirts.
You can use special pants.
There are also multi-tiered trouser racks (hangers-crossbars). But their convenience is ambiguous. Despite the retractable crossbars, removing trousers from the lower tiers is very problematic (by the way, when hanging trousers on such a hanger, you need to start from the lower tier) and on such devices the trousers will wrinkle more.
Multi-tiered hangers with more than two crossbars do not save space in the closet, because things are layered on top of each other, thereby taking up even more space in width. The best option for such a device is a two-tier hanger with retractable bars, but even on them it is better to place thin and wrinkle-free trousers.
A multi-tier trouser rack can be adapted to store scarves or ties when there are a lot of them.
Storage of jackets and cardigans
Multi-tiered hangers for shirts are even less convenient to use and are more suitable for seasonal items (which cannot be wrinkled), put away for long-term storage in the far corner of the closet.
Jackets and suits should be hung on hangers with wide hangers to maintain the shape of the item.
If at work you need to wear a jacket or jacket (in the case of women), and you travel by car, then be sure to purchase a car hanger that is attached to the seat, so you will not wrinkle the suit on the road.
How to Store Garment Belts
It is most convenient to hang clothing belts on a special hanger with many hooks.
And a separate hook for belts is not very convenient, because every time you need to get a belt from the middle, you will have to remove all previously hanging belts from the hanger. It is more convenient to hang thin sashes and belts without buckles on such a hook.
How to store shoes
It is most convenient to store shoes that are not suitable for the season in boxes. If it is a cardboard box, then you must sign on the end information about the pair of shoes in the box; for clarity, you can even sketch out the style or paste a photo of the shoes. Transparent shoe containers are very convenient. Shoes on a shoe rack without a box will gather dust.
Hanging shoe covers are needed in the summer, when there are more shoes in use (and they are not tall), so that they do not gather dust on open shelves (and it is also inconvenient to take them out of the box every time).
It is convenient to store underwear and socks in drawers, sorted into sections in laundry trunks. Choose saddlebags made from breathable materials, not plastic.
An audit of the closet should be carried out every season so that the closet does not become cluttered.

SHOES
There are two options: either in original boxes, with photographs pasted on them (what a pity that Polaroids are out of circulation).
Or buy boxes with transparent windows from IKEA.
Because the principle works with shoes like nothing else: if it is not visible, then it is not there.
And rummaging through all the boxes in search of the right pair is not a pleasant task. For a long life of your favorite shoes, learn the rule: if you decide to put them in a box, clean them first. And stuff it with paper to avoid deformation.
Proper space planning
Before you begin to properly place things, you need to think about the internal organization of the wardrobe space. The ideal solution would be to design a product strictly to suit your needs. Every person knows what and where it is convenient for him to store. If it is not possible to make furniture to order, choose modular systems.
Here are some tips on how to beautifully and competently plan the interior space of your closet:
- give up old things. Review your entire wardrobe; most likely you will find a lot of unused clothes there;
- if there is no closet, try to zone the room. Allocate some space for storing clothes and place racks with shelves there. The best option is to organize such a place in the bedroom;
- access to shoe boxes should be quick. Place stickers on them, where the names of the shoes and their color will be written down;
- choose thin metal hangers to compactly put things on hangers. They will not take up much space and can withstand heavy loads;
- to beautifully fold T-shirts, bed linen or other things - sort them by color;
- Narrow-height shelves will help you compactly fold your bed linen.
Don't forget to equip the closet with lighting to make it easy to access. Most often, built-in spots are used on the ceiling of the product.
DECORATIONS
For jewelry and jewelry, it is most convenient to splurge on a special chest of drawers or dividers with a larger number of sections. The more sections, the better!
Necklaces and chains can be hung on hooks; when lying down, they happily and quickly get mixed up with each other.
And glasses can also be hung on a hanger!
Decluttering the mezzanine
Many people put clothes that need to be repaired or are seasonal on the mezzanine. She bided her time. If you can’t repair it, then you don’t need to store it - throw it away immediately. The seasonal one also needs to be reviewed. Perhaps there is something that is out of fashion that you will never wear. Get rid of it without regret.
Wicker boxes and drawers are a very convenient place for storage. If you can't buy them, make them yourself. Divide the large box into several sections. This will make it more convenient to store socks, belts, underwear, and children's things. Moreover, they should be stored rolled up, and not stacked in a drawer. When rolled, they wrinkle less.
Where things are on shelves, leave one free. After wearing it, place another item on it. If it gets dirty, send it straight to the wash. Never fold dirty items of clothing.
OUTERWEAR
The problem with it is that half the time it is worn very actively, and the other half it is not taken out of the closet at all. Therefore, before putting it in the closet (fur - only in a closet or in a fabric case, it will “suffocate” in a plastic bag) - be sure to clean it and put in an anti-moth agent. Don't be afraid, they no longer smell like old mothballs. In general, in order to avoid a colony of these winged friends of humans, often go through clothes that have not been worn for a long time and do not forget to periodically change the tablets.
To be honest, organizing your wardrobe takes a lot of time and effort. But the result is visible immediately, you can use it for a long time, and for the titanic work done, you can treat yourself to, say, a new blouse. After all, you now know for sure that you don’t have exactly this one yet!
The secret that will make cleaning and storing home clothes easier
Remember the well-known wisdom that it is clean not where they clean, but where they don’t litter. Take this principle into account: do not buy clothes that you do not need, do not store excess. And be sure to review and sort your clothes once every six months or at least once a year. A fresh look at your wardrobe, changing seasons and fashion trends will help you understand what is too late in your closet. And things that are no longer needed can always be placed in charity shops, where they will find new owners and will make them happy.
Sort through the clothes you wear
When going through your wardrobe, pay attention to which dresses, skirts and blouses you wore only 2-3 times. Put them away. Perhaps, after thinking again, you will want to get rid of them. Get rid of it if the color doesn’t suit you, the style makes you look fat, and it’s uncomfortable to wear. Why do something unpleasant to yourself?
Very useful experience:
- Create several capsule kits to work with.
- Hang them on the right side of your wardrobe.
- After putting on one set in the morning, hang it on the left side in the evening or put it in the wash.
- The next day, wear the next set. This way there will be a daily change of outfit. Not only will you dress differently every day, but you won’t have to waste time searching for the right wardrobe items.
- Review your outfits from time to time and create new sets.
Installing shelves
If the filling of the cabinet was not thought out in advance, it is worth “pumping” it yourself. It happens that the shelves provided by the manufacturer are located at a great distance from each other. A stack of folded clothes ends up too high and quickly creates clutter.
Typically, shelves are made from laminated chipboard, sawed to fit the width and depth of the cabinet, protecting the ends with an edge and fixing them with screws and shelf holders.
