How to properly wash a flannelette blanket in a washing machine

The flannelette blanket has a natural composition and soft texture.
It is often used for children, including newborns, as it is hypoallergenic and soft. In order for the item to retain its qualities and not pose a threat to health, flannelette blankets must be properly cared for.

In this article we will tell you whether and how to wash a flannelette blanket (including for newborns) by hand and in a washing machine, and which washing detergent is best suited.

Effectively clean blankets made from various materials and fillings

It is recommended to wash blankets at least once a year, and children’s blankets more often. To extend the life of the product, cleaning and washing should be carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions on the label. If the information has not been preserved and the item needs cleaning, it is recommended to use general rules specific to each type of material and filler.

Sintepon or holofiber

Synthetic winterizer, with holofiber filling. Bedspreads with synthetic fillers tolerate dry cleaning, hand and machine washing. For machine washing, it is recommended to use laundry balls or their equivalent – tennis balls – in the drum, which prevent the filler from clumping into clumps. Liquid gels or powders for delicate fabrics are used as a detergent.

Flannelette, patchwork

Flannelette and patchwork blankets are made from natural fabrics, incl. cotton The materials can easily be cleaned in an automatic machine and dry quickly. They do not require special gels for washing delicate fabrics or the use of special balls and tennis balls. You can dry it on a line or in a horizontal position.

Down, silk

Down, silk. It is better to dry clean them; if washed incorrectly, silk will lose its attractive appearance. Some blankets have a cover that can be easily removed and washed separately from the filling. If you can’t dry clean your down product, you should try washing it at home. Down is a capricious material, it doesn’t wash well, it rolls into clumps, which makes it difficult to dry and leads to the formation of a moldy smell. The down is machine washable at low temperatures using delicate detergents and balls. Dry on a horizontal surface, periodically turning over and breaking up fluffy lumps.

Wool or bamboo

Woolen, bamboo blankets, and fleece blankets are all-woven, they can be washed in a machine without the use of special laundry balls. Dry in a horizontal position to prevent deformation and stretching. Fleece items are not subject to vertical drying. Hand wash allowed. To protect the hair structure of sheep, camel, merino or llama wool, it is worth purchasing special detergents.

The range of blankets in most bedding stores consists of holofiber, padding polyester, bamboo; cotton ones are less common. You won't be able to wash them at home. Cotton wool absorbs water and does not dry well; during the washing process it clumps into clumps that cannot be broken and dried. As a result, the cotton filling will become damp, moldy and acquire an unpleasant odor. Cotton blankets are beaten, dry cleaned at home using special chemicals, and dry cleaned. Dry on a horizontal surface so that the product does not deform.

Blankets with exotic fillings (eucalyptus, seaweed) are subject to hygienic treatment only by dry cleaning, unless otherwise indicated on the label.

Blankets designed to preserve car heat are cleaned using laundry soap and a sponge. If you need to remove deep stains from traces of the petrochemical industry, it is better to do it by dry cleaning or manually, so as not to damage the automatic machine.

The requirements for them are quite strict:

  • hypoallergenic composition;
  • high efficiency;
  • safety;
  • good solubility;
  • easy rinsing;
  • lack of pronounced aroma.

If the flannelette blanket is intended for an adult, then the choice of detergent will be much wider, but you can also use those recommended for children.

Removing stains

Any stain that appears on the product must be removed as soon as possible so that it does not become deeply absorbed into the fibers and become old.

If the stain is small, affecting only the top layer, it is not necessary to wash the entire blanket - it is enough to treat only the stain. If there are traces of significant size, washing the entire item cannot be avoided.

If the stain has just appeared, it is recommended to moisten the affected area with cold water to prevent its spread. If you know what exactly caused the stain, it will be much easier to deal with it.

Fat

Grease stains are one of the most common types of stains, especially in children. Residues from “goodies” can be neutralized with dishwashing detergent:

  • in a separate bowl it is diluted with a small amount of water to obtain a solution of high concentration;
  • foam;
  • using a sponge, apply to the stain;
  • let the blanket lie there;
  • wash the affected area or rewash the entire item if the area is large enough.

This article will tell you more about how to remove grease stains from fabric.

Urine

You can remove urine stains from a blanket if you follow this algorithm:

  1. Blot the surface with napkins.
  2. Dilute vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:3.
  3. Spray the resulting solution onto the blanket using a spray bottle.
  4. Blot with a napkin.
  5. If there is a lot of moisture, then pour baking soda onto the stain and leave it for a quarter of an hour.
  6. Dilute hydrogen peroxide with water in a ratio of 1:2.
  7. Spray baking soda directly onto the stain. When soda and peroxide are combined, a chemical reaction will occur to form foam.
  8. Leave for 2 hours.
  9. Blot, clean.
  10. Wash the blanket.

Blood

You can neutralize a fresh stain by washing it with cold water and treating it with hydrogen peroxide. When the reaction is over, the stain is washed away.

If a large area is affected, then a full wash will be required after treatment. Read about ways to remove blood stains from fabric here.

Yellowed areas

Yellow stains on a blanket can be eliminated using a vinegar solution (diluted in water 1:1) or lemon juice:

  • apply the stain removing liquid to the stain with a sponge or sponge;
  • stand for a quarter of an hour;
  • washed away;
  • if the stain remains, the process is repeated;
  • the blanket is washed.

One method of prevention is proper washing and drying. Moisture should not be allowed to stagnate and accumulate while drying the item.

Alcoholic drinks

If a lot of liquid has been spilled, you should use napkins and blot the stain. A solvent is an alcohol solution that will help remove traces of a drink. You can use alcohol, diluting it with water (1:1) or vodka.

The sponge is moistened in the solution and the stain is blotted from the edges to the middle. After the stain has disappeared, the blanket should be washed.

To remove stains, it is advisable to use only alcohol or vodka, which do not have a tint. Any other alcohol-containing drinks are not suitable, as they themselves may leave stains.

How to wash a blanket with wool added

Washing such a product should be more delicate. It is better to wash it by hand using special liquid powders for woolen items.

Fill a large bowl with warm water, dissolve the detergent and soak the item. Leave it for half an hour, gently rub it with your hands, drain the water and rinse. Place the blanket in the sink and wait for it to drain.

Then carefully remove excess moisture with your palms and lay the item on a flat surface. Turn the product over periodically and, when it is thoroughly dry, hang it in a draft to allow it to dry completely. Iron at minimum temperature through cheesecloth.. When you don’t have time to clean with your hands, don’t despair and wonder if it’s possible to machine wash a flannelette blanket with added wool.

This is allowed if you follow some rules

When you don't have time to clean by hand, don't despair and don't wonder if a flannelette blanket with added wool can be machine washed. This is allowed if you follow some rules.

Don't get confused about what temperature to wash your flannelette blanket at. In no case should it exceed 40C, otherwise the wool may mat or shrink. If your machine has a Wool mode, select it. When it is missing, “Delicate Wash” will do. Throw a few tennis balls into the drum and skip the spin cycle entirely. Twist and dry in the same way as after washing by hand.

With proper care, a flannelette blanket will retain its shape, softness and color for many years, so treat it with love and care.

The mother's clothing, which the baby comes into contact with, must be carefully treated with safe products.

Storage rules

Storing and caring for a flannel blanket is quite easy.

You can read about how to properly care for the purchased item on the label containing short symbols. The flannelette blanket is easy to care for, so all the housewife’s efforts come down to timely washing, drying and creating suitable conditions for storage. How to do this correctly?

After returning from the store with your purchase, you need to remove the blanket from the packaging and unwrap it. It will absorb oxygen and gain the required volume. When using this linen item, to maintain its impeccable appearance, do not forget about the following:

  1. Shake. It’s better every day - this way it won’t accumulate dust or other contaminants. In addition, this is very beneficial for the baby’s health, since dust particles can cause allergies.
  2. Dry in fresh air. The hygroscopic properties of the material contribute to the absorption of moisture that evaporates from the surface of the skin, so as often as possible it should be taken out onto the balcony, into the yard or into a well-ventilated area. It is not advisable to leave it in direct sunlight.
  3. Put on a duvet cover. The blanket will be protected from dirt as much as possible, so it will last a long time. This is especially true if there are children in the house.
  4. Find a good storage location. If the blanket is not in use, it must be packed in a special case, which is made of “breathable” fabrics, and sent to the shelf. If such a cover is not available, you can simply wrap it in a sheet. The room where laundry is stored must be dry and well ventilated.

Is it possible to iron?

After the flannelette blanket has been washed, it needs to be dried properly. To do this, take it out of the drum, shake it and hang it in the shade in the fresh air, carefully smoothing out all the wrinkles.

When it dries completely, the pile may become harsh. An iron will help correct the situation. Preheat it to 150C and carefully iron the blanket on both sides. Then take a soft-bristled brush and comb the blanket properly, trying to lift the unruly fibers. This will give the product volume and softness.

Manufacturing

In the modern world of synthetic fibers, a flannelette blanket is an island of naturalness and waste-free production.

The production of a bike begins at the stage of selecting raw materials. Any raw cotton is suitable for it, not necessarily the highest grade, so what is often sent for processing is what is not suitable for other fabrics. But the essence of the manufacturing process is to clean the prepared material as much as possible. For this purpose, washing and carding machines are used.

The threads are not twisted, but shaped by the roving. Thanks to this, it is possible to achieve a unique softness of the finished product. Cotton is dyed in different ways, sometimes at the stage of prepared yarn, sometimes by stamping on the finished fabric.

Product advantages

The product is characterized by its versatility. Suitable for all occasions, starting from the first days of life. It is laid on a changing table to cover the baby during travel, picnics, or going to the clinic. After swimming, you can dry yourself with a flannel cloth; it absorbs moisture perfectly.

Production technology allows us to produce flannelette blankets for children in various colors. May have interesting drawings. The product can be used without a duvet cover. It will decorate any interior.

  5. Ease. The blanket does not create strong pressure on the baby and does not hinder movement.
  6. Long period of operation. The traditional method of weaving the fibers and the sufficient density of the material ensure that even after frequent washing the fabric will not become rough.
  7. Softness. There is no discomfort upon contact, the fabric is pleasant to the touch, and there is no lint that irritates the skin.
  8. Easy to care for. Easy to wash with ordinary inexpensive soaps; machine washable. First you just need to read the manufacturers' recommendations on the label.

Due to its low cost, all parents with any income level can afford to buy a flannelette blanket. When the child grows up, the product can be placed in the stroller while walking outside. It is convenient to put in a playpen and a child car seat.

The blanket can be laid on the floor as a comfortable mat for the child to play on. This beautiful product is also suitable for releasing a newborn from the hospital. This will help save money on purchasing an expensive discharge kit.

Bike models are mainly chosen for the summer or as a demi-season option. But if the house is warm in winter, then you can use it all year round.

What sizes are there?

Based on their size, bike products are divided into three groups:

  • Children's. Size 100x90 cm. Modern blankets for newborns are produced with colored prints, but they are all soft pastel colors so as not to attract the baby’s attention while rocking. For older children, you can purchase a model with bright patterns. It is advisable that the blanket harmonizes well with the child's bedding.
  • One and a half sleepers. Size 150x200 cm. Blankets of this size can be used by teenagers or adults. The colors include patterns or checkered patterns. May be tricolor.
  • Double. Size 200x200 cm. Purchased for double beds, often in the form of a bedspread. A modern 2-bed product looks more like a colored blanket than a blanket. The colors are dominated by patterns or checks.

Machine washing instructions

First of all, pay attention to the tag on the blanket. As a rule, the main parameters for washing a flannelette blanket are indicated there.

If there is no such label on your item, follow the simple instructions.

  1. If the item has heavy stains that are difficult to remove, it is better to soak it in water with a detergent such as laundry soap or liquid powder before washing. Do not use aggressive drugs under any circumstances.
  2. Load the blanket into the machine. It is not forbidden to wash it with other things, but it is better to refrain from doing so.
  3. The washing mode is selected based on the material: wool blankets are washed using the wool program, and for all others you can select a delicate program.
  4. To prevent the blanket from shrinking and deforming, the water should not be hot, so 40 degrees is the maximum allowable value.
  5. It is best to wring out a blanket manually by rolling it into a roll, but if you are afraid that you will not be able to, set the machine to the lowest possible speed. Such products do not accept aggressive spinning.
  6. It is better to dry the blanket unfolded, after straightening out all the folds and getting rid of creases. The room should be well ventilated, and it is better to dry the item in the open air.

If your blanket suddenly becomes stiff after the washing process, steam it with an iron, and then run a comb over it on both sides to fluff up the pile of the product.

Important! When washing blankets with wool fibers, place either tennis balls or special laundry balls in the drum. Well, so in the end, is it possible to use automatic washing? You can safely give a positive answer

Well, so in the end, is it possible to use automatic washing? You can safely give a positive answer.

Washing rules

You can wash a blanket made of wool either by hand or in an automatic washing machine. If automatic washing is acceptable, then check that the blanket fits freely in the drum of your washing machine. If it is difficult to fit into the machine, then it is better to refuse such washing, so as not to overload the equipment. For best washing results, the machine must have a load of at least 6 kg. And even in this case, it is worth checking whether a double blanket will fit into it.

So, to wash this bedding in an automatic washing machine, you need to:

  1. load blanket;
  2. pour gel into the cuvette, designed specifically for washing woolen items;
  3. select the washing program called “Wool”, making sure that the machine does not heat the water more than 30 degrees;
  4. turn off the spin;
  5. start the wash.

After stopping the washing machine, you can let the blanket lie in the drum for a few minutes so that some of the water drains into the tank. Then take it out, straighten it and hang it to dry, turning it over during the drying process. It is best to dry outside in the shade, so that direct sunlight does not hit the product.

If machine washing is prohibited, the blanket must be washed by hand. They do this procedure in the bathroom, taking in a lot of cool water, since a wool blanket absorbs a lot of water, unlike a holofiber blanket. Hand washing consists of the following:

  • dissolve a special product or regular shampoo in water, whisking the product well into a foam;
  • immerse the product in water and leave it for several minutes;
  • then they turn it over, carefully lift it and lower it so that dirt and dust come out of the product into the water, but you should not rub the blanket, otherwise it will lose its shape;
  • Then the product is rinsed, changing the water several times;
  • drain the water from the bath and allow the water to flow out of the woolen product. In this case, the item should not be squeezed, crushed or twisted too much;
  • then lay it out to dry in a horizontal position and let it dry; when the blanket stops dripping, you can hang it on a rope.

Cleaning

In some cases, professional dry cleaning can be replaced by cleaning at home. Unlike a full wash, it is easier to carry out. To do this, you need to purchase a gel that contains lanolin. Clean the blanket like this:

  1. foam the detergent into a thick foam in a small amount of water;
  2. apply foam to contaminated areas;
  3. after a couple of minutes, remove the foam clouds with a clean cloth or sponge;
  4. dry the blanket in the fresh air.

This procedure will remove stench and dirt. Of course, if you accidentally spill a mug of coffee, you won’t be able to remove the stain, but you can refresh the blanket in this way.

Facilities

To wash such a blanket, you can only use special products. They usually contain lanolin, a substance that preserves the structure of wool fibers. Here are some popular remedies:

  • Henkel Wool Caress is a wool washing liquid that keeps wool soft and airy and is easy to rinse.
  • Wool Care from Miele is a balm for washing woolen items from a well-known manufacturer of washing machines. It prevents wool fibers from pilling and is effective for washing in cold water.
  • Vorsinka is an inexpensive liquid product made in Russia, suitable for hand washing, as well as washing in an automatic machine.
  • AlmaWin is a concentrated plant-based product. It is suitable not only for washing a wool blanket, but also for delicate clothes.
  • Domal – washing balm with lanolin.

Features of washing in a washing machine

The easiest way to wash a flannelette blanket is in a washing machine. Before loading, you need to take it out of the duvet cover and shake it thoroughly to get rid of dust.

At what temperature?

Setting the correct temperature is a very important point. The optimal value for a bike is from +35ºС to +40ºС.

Hot water should not be used, as it may damage the item:

  • acquisition of roughness and rigidity by the material;
  • loss of edema;
  • deformation.

Mode selection and spin

The best washing modes are:

  • "delicate wash";
  • "cotton";
  • “wool” - if the material contains wool fibers and the manufacturer allows automatic processing.

Since the processing should not be intensive, a gentle spin is recommended - up to 600 rpm. For a bike with wool – no more than 400 rpm, or disable this mode completely.

Processing order

The flannel blanket should be put into the washing machine only after shaking out and removing stains, if any, on it.

Progress:

  1. Place the item in the drum of the machine.
  2. Pour the selected powder into the detergent container.
  3. Pour laundry softener into the compartment provided for it.
  4. Set the “delicate wash” or “cotton” mode.
  5. Set the temperature.
  6. Set the spin speed to 400-500 rpm.
  7. Start the wash.

Is it possible?

The peculiarity of the composition of a flannelette blanket is the inclusion of natural cotton fibers, twisted in a special way. Such a thing is created using a special jacquard and napping machine.

Density and better heat retention are achieved by including auxiliary materials - wool, viscose. This composition of the material should be taken into account when choosing a method for washing a blanket.

First you need to study the product label. On it, the manufacturer indicates the fabric composition, washability, optimal processing temperature and other useful information.

Almost all flannelette products can be washed both in a machine and by hand. Restrictions on care may be found mainly in products that contain wool. Improper care can ruin the item.

General recommendations for washing blankets

There are three washing options:

  • manual;
  • in the typewriter;
  • dry.

You can also use dry cleaning services. But, according to many housewives, the cost of such cleaning is comparable to the price of a new blanket. Before washing, carefully read the information on the blanket label, which contains the necessary information about proper care of the product. Some materials require dry cleaning only, others have restrictions on temperature, spinning or drying. Compliance with these recommendations is a guarantee of quality results.

The blanket label contains all the necessary information on caring for the product.

Preliminary preparation

Immediately before washing:

  1. Check the integrity of the cover. If there are holes or loose seams, sew them up or put patches on them, otherwise during washing the fabric may tear even more, and the filling will come out through the holes and become deformed. Putting it back in and straightening it out will be difficult, and in the case of a duvet, impossible.
  2. In quilted products, quilting not only performs a decorative function, but also fixes the filling. If the seam is torn, it must be repaired before washing, otherwise the filler will clump together.
  3. Check the blanket for stains. If necessary, treat them with special means. Be sure to follow the instructions for use and dosage indicated on the package.

Machine washable

If the blanket can, in principle, be washed in a machine, compare the maximum load of the device indicated in the passport with the actual weight of the product. If the weight (usually indicated on the label) is less than the maximum permissible number of kilograms, the blanket can be washed in this machine.

Another way is to compare volume. If after loading the blanket there is a little free space left in the drum of the washing machine, you can wash it.

Roll up the blanket: fold it 3-4 times to make a long and narrow rectangle no wider than the depth of the machine drum, then roll it into a roller and load it into the drum in this position

Expanding naturally during washing, the product will adhere to the walls and create an even load on the drum of the washing machine. To create an even load on the machine drum when washing a blanket, it is important to roll it correctly

Load detergents into the container compartments. For the main wash, use liquid powders or gels, which dissolve better in water and rinse well, which means they will not cause allergic reactions, which is important for bedding

Add conditioner to the rinse compartment to soften the fibers of the blanket. Set the temperature, spin and drying in accordance with the recommendations on the product label and select an additional rinse.

Handwash

If machine washing is not possible, you will have to wash the blanket by hand. This can only be done in the bathtub, since no basins can accommodate a large product. The process is not easy: once wet, the blanket becomes very heavy, it is difficult to lift it and wash it like an ordinary thing. To make the task easier, let’s approach the process in a non-standard way.

  1. Fill the bathtub with water. There should be enough of it so that the blanket is completely submerged in water, but not too much. Temperature - according to the recommendations on the product label.
  2. Add detergent to the water and stir well. It should completely dissolve.
  3. Immerse the blanket in the cleaning solution.
    Hand washing a blanket should be done in the bathtub
  4. Next, start washing. The traditional approach involves “knocking out” the product, intensive lifting and lowering for 10–20 minutes, which, due to the large and heavy product, is not at all easy, requires effort and not weak physical fitness. But there is also an original way - to wash a blanket with your feet: stand on the blanket in the bath and dance on it for 10-20 minutes or just step over it, as you used to crush grapes with your feet in a barrel. Labor costs are much less, but the effect is the same - a clean blanket.
  5. Rinse the blanket several times in the same way until the water is clear after rinsing.
  6. The next stage is spinning. It is clear that it is impossible to squeeze it in the traditional way. And here's another life hack. Drain the water from the bathtub, press down the blanket with your hands or feet so that as little water remains in it as possible, then move it to the edge of the bathtub. Place two stools in the bathtub, place the product on them and sit on top of the blanket. The water that is still in it will flow down to the bottom of the bath. Leave it on the stools for a while longer: some of the water will drain, and the blanket will dry out and become lighter.
  7. Rearrange and straighten the product for complete drying.

Advantages and disadvantages

Flannelette blankets have long won a place in the hearts of consumers. Of course, price is important: textiles made from raw cotton are cheap, so they are available to everyone. However, its functionality is beyond praise. A warm and soft blanket will warm and protect a child, patronage nurses never tire of repeating this, and an adult flannelette blanket can be used as a bedspread.

Flannelette blankets:

  • pleasant to the touch;
  • allow the skin to breathe;
  • safe for children;
  • wear-resistant;
  • lightweight, easy to carry;
  • hypoallergenic, do not cause contact dermatitis;
  • are not electrified;
  • Can be washed at home, no need to take it to the cleaners.

However, like any product made of cotton, especially roving torsion, flannelette shrinks and is damaged by pests (several types of indoor moths).

Reason for popularity

The thing is that the material is light, warm and durable. These are the main advantages of cotton. No one can boast of such properties. Flannelette blankets are easy to wash and dry. They do not require ironing, as they do not wrinkle during use.

Flannelette products are used on the train, in cold weather, they are taken outdoors, as a blanket for a picnic. They can be used for shelter in winter and summer. Thanks to excellent thermoregulation, a thick blanket reliably protects against cold and sun rays. Models made from yarn with the addition of six are used in the army, but they are denser and stiffer than for home use. Hospitals and childcare centers also stock such blankets. More often they are purchased in bulk due to their favorable prices.

Another purpose of a flannel jacket is its use for yoga or gymnastics. Of course, it is better to practice on special rubberized mats, but at home, blankets 200x200 cm placed on the floor will also work.

In children's rooms, instead of a blanket or rug, they usually lay a yarn. This is practical, since the blanket can become wrinkled and the carpet can get dirty. The blanket can withstand anything.

Handwash

It is best to wash woolen items by hand. This especially applies to delicate and delicate products made from cashmere, mohair, alpaca, and angora. Trying to wash them in the machine incorrectly, even a delicate program can damage them. The temperature regime is also important: the water temperature should not be higher than 30C. The detergent can be either a special liquid for washing delicate fabrics or regular hair shampoo. To keep things soft, add a little glycerin to the water, about a teaspoon. For aromatization, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil.

If you want to use natural remedies in your home, mustard will come in handy. It is good not only for washing hair and dishes, but is also great for washing woolen products. To prepare the solution, take 15 grams of mustard powder for every liter of water, fill it with warm water and leave for 2 hours. The powder particles will settle to the bottom, and you will need to carefully drain the water so as not to stir up the particles and prevent them from getting into the wash basin, otherwise you will have to rinse the item for a long time to get rid of the powder. Dilute the drained solution with hot water so that the temperature is low. Now you can wash your things. You can add water to the grounds that remain and make a solution again.

Before hand washing woolen items, check them for stains. First you need to get rid of them, then wash the entire thing. The most affordable stain removers are hydrogen peroxide or vinegar. By the way, it’s good to add a couple of tablespoons of 9% vinegar while rinsing. It is able to make the fibers softer, and the item will not prick.

Strong friction is contraindicated for such products, especially against a washboard. So the fibers fall off, become coarse and dense, and the soft thing loses its original appearance.

To properly wash wool, including sheep’s wool, make smooth and careful movements with your hands: you need to gently wrinkle the item, wring it out without twisting it. Drying clothes by hanging them on a line is not correct. To prevent things from stretching, you need to dry them by laying them out on a flat surface in a room with good ventilation. General rules for washing woolen items by hand:

  • There should be a lot of water;
  • To prevent clothes from shrinking, the water temperature should be no higher than 40C;
  • Use a special gel, soap solution or regular hair shampoo as a detergent;
  • Do not rub the product, especially on a washboard;
  • When rinsing, use regular table vinegar. It softens the barb;
  • Do not use chlorine-containing bleaches;
  • There is no need to twist wool products. Leave them and let the water drain;

Removing stains

Fresh stains are easiest to clean, so don’t delay getting rid of them. Traces must be removed before washing. To do this, rub the contaminated areas with laundry soap and leave the cloth in warm water for a while.
