After renovation there are always excess building materials left. Some of them cannot be useful in any way on the farm and are simply thrown away, while some, on the contrary, have many different applications that were invented by folk craftsmen. The latter also includes linoleum, the use of which, in fact, is the subject of this article.
If after repairs you still have pieces or even small trimmings of this flooring, do not rush to throw it away. Below I will tell you some interesting ideas for using it, and you will be convinced that this material is really useful in the household.
Crafts from linoleum
Useful crafts from leftover linoleum after renovation
If after renovation you have some linoleum left, do not rush to throw it in the trash.
The remains of this material can be put to good use at home or in the country. In this article, I will share with you some good ideas for using leftover linoleum. On my balcony there is a roll of linoleum that was left over after the renovation. It's not enough for the floor, but it's a shame to throw it away. Therefore, I began to look for ideas on how to usefully use the remains of this material. I share interesting and simple ideas with you.
So, most often builders use leftover linoleum to make good glue. If you finely cut pieces of linoleum, pour acetone over them and let them sit for 15 hours, you will get good superglue.
In terms of its qualities, this glue is not inferior to the famous Moment glue.
You can make a cute tray. Cups on such a tray will not slip and it is very pleasant to use. To do this, take a regular plastic tray. Cut or piece together a length of linoleum to completely cover the bottom of the tray. Now glue the linoleum to the tray using Moment glue or superglue. Leave until the glue hardens.
For the motorist
In this area it is possible to use scraps as:
№ | Use Cases | Methods of implementation |
1 | Bedding for motorists when repairing a car | You can use a long piece to lie on if you need to look under the car during repairs. |
2 | Car mat | A small piece of linoleum laid in the car helps keep the interior clean. This rug is easy to clean, you can simply shake the dust from it outside. |
You can also line the trunk of a car with linoleum, this will make cleaning much easier.
What can be made from leftover linoleum - 20+ crafts from scraps
There are more than 20 options for crafts made from pieces of linoleum. These are interesting ideas for home, garden, kindergarten and car. Even small scraps will be useful (let's try to make glue).
Let's figure out what can be made from leftover linoleum. So as not to throw away extra pieces after repair.
What is usually done with unnecessary trimmings:
- Take a photo and try to sell it. If there is a lot of material left. Such advertisements are often found on the Internet;
- Repair old floor. We make patches in case of cuts, burnt areas and holes on the linoleum;
Well, to make crafts you will need scissors, an awl, thread and needle, a hook, a pen and a glue stick. We also keep a blade handy for careful cutting.
We insulate the balcony
If the pieces of linoleum are large enough, they can be used to insulate the floors on the balcony. If you carefully trim and adjust the pieces to fit the size of the balcony, you will get a nice floor covering. This will decorate the appearance of the balcony, allow you to easily and effectively carry out wet cleaning on it, and insulate the floor. If the floors are very cold, you can put insulation under the linoleum.
My husband found old linoleum in the garage and made flower baskets for his dacha
We had old linoleum in our garage. In order not to throw it away, my husband made stylish and original flower beds and flower baskets from this flooring and pegs. Now our garden looks much more beautiful even without any landscaping, and all the neighbors are jealous of us and often come to look at the beauty we have created.
Moreover, the baskets are equipped with handles, so plants can be easily transported from one place to another.
Manufacturing process
The first step is to cut and install support pegs around the perimeter of the future flower bed. Next, strips about 10 centimeters wide are cut out of the old linoleum, from which a basket is subsequently woven. To increase its strength, they are additionally attached using a construction stapler. For handles, my husband used existing metal rods wrapped in burlap so they wouldn't cut his hands when carrying the portable flower beds. And it really turned out to be very convenient. You can also use plastic pipes.
I planted climbing plants in my basket beds because I really like them. Before filling them with soil and planting them, I laid a layer of sand at the bottom so that excess moisture would not stagnate and lead to rotting of the root system, but would move away from it.
Unusual use of linoleum in the country: advice from craftsmen
Materials such as linoleum are excellent for weed control. A practical solution would be to cover garden paths and rows in the greenhouse with it. Weeds do not make their way through the linoleum and the paths remain clean. The only drawback is that after rain the paths become slippery, which just needs to be taken into account when using them.
You can also use linoleum to get rid of weeds along the fence or in the area of the garden where it is necessary. You just need to spread pieces of linoleum in these places.
Base for various materials
Linoleum can serve as an excellent basis for placing various bulk materials on it in a summer cottage, such as a pile of sand or crushed stone. It can also be used as a base for an inflatable pool. It will prevent damage to the bottom of the pool and prevent weeds from growing around.
Flower garden or flowerbed
Using the remains of linoleum and PVC pipes, you can make an original flowerbed in the form of a basket. You can also use linoleum as a border for a flower garden.
Decor
Linoleum can be used to create decorative elements in the country house. A decorative pond that you can easily make with your own hands will look unusual and original. Elements of the future structure need to be cut out from pieces of linoleum and painted.
Then cover the resulting decorative pond with stones.
Such a pond will be an excellent decorative element in your summer cottage.
Furniture upholstery
A practical solution is to upholster country furniture with linoleum. With its help, you can update the appearance and protect furniture from rain if it is left outside. This coating is easy to clean and also extends the service life of country furniture.
Finishing a country toilet.
Another practical use of linoleum is the interior decoration of a country toilet. In addition to giving a beautiful appearance, it can be used to close gaps in the boards. This is not a complete list of ways to use linoleum in the country; if you use your imagination, you can come up with many more options for its use.
I offer several options for using linoleum from users with skillful hands:
There are many options for using leftover linomium. Small rectangular pieces can be used as a rug; such rugs are often used in country and country houses at the entrance to the entryway, bathhouse, or barn. There are motorists who put some kind of floor mats in the car interior instead of rubber ones.
For more difficult crafts, there are many master classes on the Internet and on television, for example, the well-known program Crazy Hands:
From small scraps of linoleum you can make a very reliable universal glue that can be used to glue most materials, from metal to porcelain and ceramic tiles. For glue, linoleum needs to be crushed, placed in a metal jar, and acetone added so that it completely covers the linoleum crumbs. Next, you need to close the jar with a lid and leave the glue to “marinate” for 15 hours. The glue turns out to be very strong, however, quite toxic. When used, you must make sure that the room is well ventilated.
Finally, I can’t help but remember my favorite option for using leftover linoleum from my childhood: a rectangular piece of linoleum is the perfect material for a homemade sled. You just need to bend one edge of the linoleum and you can roll down the mountain.
If small pieces of linoleum remain after repairs, do not rush to throw them away; they can be used around the house. If the pieces are large enough, they can be used for their intended purpose, for example, laid on a loggia or balcony; such a floor is easy to care for. Why not make a patchwork style floor from leftover natural linoleum in the kitchen or hallway. It is advisable to draw a sketch on the computer or by hand, see how to place all the pieces more economically and correctly.
Summer residents and owners of personal plots often lay pieces of linoleum between the beds. And to prevent slippery walking after rain, they cover the top with straw. You can also make comfortable paths; grass does not grow under the linoleum. First, level the paths, lay down pieces of linoleum, they can be secured along the perimeter with long nails; the nails easily enter the ground and hold securely.
Or cut long narrow strips and weave them into a basket, glued with superglue. Although superglue can be made from the same material. Chop small pieces of linoleum without backing, put in a jar, and fill with acetone. After a day, the glue is ready, it can be used to glue almost anything, even metal or tiles to the ceiling.
And if you add chalk to this cheap glue at a ratio of 1:1, mix thoroughly and get mastic, you can also lay tiles on it. And if you add chalk in a ratio of 1:2, you get putty, which can be used to seal cracks.
If the remains of linoleum with a beautiful pattern, ornament, are cut out and tied with beautiful strong threads, it can be used as a stand for hot food.
Natural trimmings will be used for fakes or to make a beautiful mosaic from them:
If the remains are full-length (large), and not narrow strips, then I would recommend covering an outdoor wooden table or bench with them, perhaps small benches. Firstly, it is easy to remove dust or dirt from the linoleum, and it will also serve as some kind of protection against wood residue and wooden products will last longer.
Also, the remains of linoleum can be used as stands for indoor flowers, then the pots will not damage the floors, window sills or furniture on which they stand.
As a child, we made mudguards for a bicycle from the remains of linoleum, and in winter we rode it downhill - oh, how fast it accelerates!
And now in one of the offices I came across linoleum table mats to make writing on paper comfortable; they even cut out mouse pads for computers - a very versatile material, if only you could imagine.
Very often, after repairs, remnants of various materials remain, and linoleum may remain.
The leftovers should not be thrown away; you can create many interesting crafts from them.
If there are a lot of leftover linoleum, then you can lay them in the hallway, or you can lay them in a room at the dacha.
If you have furniture, chairs, a table, you can cover the tabletop, benches, or chairs with linoleum.
If it is a private house and there is a dog, then you can upholster the booth with the remains of linoleum; it will look beautiful and original, but most importantly, it will be warm for your beloved pet.
If there are a lot of leftovers, you can cut them into small different pieces and stick them on the floor in the kitchen. This floor will be beautiful and unusual.
The remains of linoleum can serve as a decorative decoration for walls, you can make paintings, but this requires not only imagination, but also the ability to work with small pieces to create paintings and mosaics.
From linoleum you can sew dolls, slippers, you can come up with a beautiful bag or case for a mobile phone.
You can cover a small fence on your property with linoleum. To do this, you should cut out the required pieces of linoleum and secure them on the outside of the fence with paper clips.
If you have small children, you can upholster a dollhouse with linoleum and make crafts for your summer cottage.
Pieces of linoleum can serve as a computer mouse pad or as a coaster for dishes.
If there are gaps in the window frame, then by cutting out small strips, you can seal these gaps.
The remains of linoleum can be placed as a rug in the interior of a car, or you can upholster a door in the bathroom or kitchen.
It will look very nice if you make a basket out of linoleum.
The use of linoleum is very wide, the main thing is to decide what you want to make from it, and then begin to show your skills.
There are a lot of options.
For example, quite often linings are cut from pieces of linoleum for nails, which are used to fasten the roofing material to the sheathing.
From linoleum (residues) you can make glue for further use for its intended purpose (acetone and finely chopped linoleum = not a bad glue, for gluing wood, ceramics, etc.).
Motorists often fit leftover linoleum into the trunk,
it is convenient, can be easily cut to the shape of the trunk, easy to clean, etc.
These same motorists often use a piece of linoleum in the form of a lining mat during repair work under the car (linoleum easily rolls up and takes up very little space when rolled up.
You can simply lay linoleum in the interior of the car, with mats on top.
From smaller pieces of linoleum, you can make various decorative crafts, including circles-stands for hot dishes.
You can upholster street benches with the remains of linoleum, an outdoor table.
Pieces of linoleum can be a good material for crafts or used on the farm.
If you have utility rooms, storage rooms or a balcony with a concrete floor, then you can cover the floors with pieces. After all, linoleum is easy to clean.
Use linoleum at the dacha in the shower. In addition, pieces of linoleum can be used to cover benches and tables in the country.
Thanks to him, they will last a long time, and wiping off dirt and dust will not be difficult.
For those who have a truly creative nature, using linoleum you can make beautiful and unusual covers for notebooks, slippers, and accessories. Cut out coasters for hot dishes or even an original mouse pad.
A wonderful contraption made from garden mesh and leftover linoleum for an unusual decor
The size of garden mesh needed for the job will depend on what size planter you want. Cut the mesh to your own measurements.
Close the mesh into a ring, connecting the edges together using thread or thin wire.
Paint the mesh using spray paint. Cut strips from linoleum. The height of the strip should correspond to the height of the grid cell.
Decorate the grid with strips of linoleum. Secure the edges of the strips with hot glue.
Cut out 3 circles from thick cardboard, the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the mesh blank. Connect the circles together to create a thick base. Cut a circle of the same size from linoleum and glue it onto a circle of cardboard.
Cover the side of the base with a strip of the same linoleum.
Secure the cardboard base in the mesh blank.
Glue another circle to the bottom of the base.
To make the stand, prepare 4 rounded wooden blocks 26 cm long.
Also for the stand you will need two rectangular bars, the length of which is equal to the diameter of the basket.
Cut out a small section in the center of each block. Use these cutouts to connect the parts together, resulting in a cross-shaped base.
Make 2 holes in the center of each round bar.
Connect the cross-shaped base to the legs. If desired, the top and bottom of the legs can be painted a darker color.
Place the basket on the base. This pot is perfect for decorating both the garden and the home.
Convenient tool organizer
Sew an organizer with pockets for storing tools from linoleum scraps.
Cut out two rectangular pieces: one for the base of the organizer, the second for the pockets. The second rectangle should be narrower, but longer than the first.
Mark the width of the pockets on the base. Decide on their volume. Tools with thick handles will require looser pockets. For screwdrivers and scissors - flat so that the tools do not slip or fall out from below.
Align the left sides of the rectangles and use an awl and strong thread to sew them together. Making allowances for sufficient volume of pockets, sew the top rectangle to the base along all the marked lines.
To keep the pieces from shifting as you sew, bring the bottom edges together and secure with paper clips, removing them as you go. For convenience, use a thick rubber backing when making punctures with an awl.
Attach the organizer to the wall of your workshop or garage and place your tools - now they will always be at hand.
Stylish and easy to make quilted rug
Children playing on rugs in the shape of large leaves resemble cute characters from Andersen's fairy tales and feel very comfortable on them!
Sewing a small leaf-shaped blanket is easy, even with a household sewing machine.
Soles for slippers
Fur house slippers, sewn in the shape of funny little animals, often have soles made of fragile material that wears out quickly. If the soles are worn out, then do not rush to throw away your favorite slippers. Use to replace linoleum trim.
Place the two pieces right sides together, trace the sole and cut out. Glue a felt or fur insole on the inside. Having connected the top of the slippers with the sole, sew around the perimeter with strong threads.
To feel confident on any floor, choose linoleum with a surface that will provide good grip. Smooth, glossy material will not work as it will slip on a wet floor.
