How to quickly peel boiled jacket potatoes?

Peeling jacket potatoes

It is easy to clean. But for a long time. In addition, there is a risk of burning your hands. Here are the fastest options.

The fastest way

For the entire operation we take:

We wash the root vegetables thoroughly, make a cut in a circle on each one so that it ends in the same place where it began. The cut should be so thin that only the skin is cut through. Place the root vegetables in water. Place on high heat. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cover with a lid. Cook for a third of an hour, but it can be faster or longer: it all depends on the size and type of potatoes.

As soon as it is ready, drain and fill with ice water for half a minute. We lay the tuber horizontally. Now we start cleaning. With a slight movement, pull the root peel from the cut line and grasp it near the line with all your fingers. We remove the peel easily and naturally. We also remove the peel from the other side of the root vegetable. Let's take the next one.

Important! If the water with potatoes gets hot during peeling, replace it with a new one, also ice-cold.

Clean with a fork

Boil the potatoes, prick the root vegetable with a fork, and remove. Place on a cutting board. We don’t take out the fork, we start scraping the vegetable with a spoon or knife right on the board.

Method similar to the first

But a little different. So, take a bowl, fill it with cold water and put ice in cubes. After removing the potatoes from the boiling water, place them in a bowl with ice and water. We take it out after half a minute, cut the skin crosswise with a thin sharp knife. Starting from the cut, remove the peel. You can clean other products in the same way:

What else can a vegetable peeler do?

Seeing my surprise, my friend decided to tell me a few more secrets of vegetable peeling:

  • The “ears” along the edges are designed to remove eyes from potatoes. They will also help make beautiful grooves on vegetables and fruits for a holiday salad.
  • Using a vegetable peeler, you can quickly and accurately cut cheese. The slices turn out very thin and easily roll into beautiful tubes.
  • You can use a vegetable peeler to shred cabbage! To do this, you need to place the blade on the corner of the cabbage cut in half and move it lightly, without pressing, up and down.
  • Want to decorate your dessert with grated chocolate? And a vegetable peeler will cope with this task perfectly. Hold the chocolate bar at an angle. Take the device in your other hand and move it downwards with slight pressure.

And, of course, a vegetable peeler can be used to peel not only potatoes, but also zucchini, eggplant, carrots, beets, and tomatoes. In general, almost any vegetables and fruits.

Peeling raw potatoes

This is already more complicated. The fastest way is to buy a special potato peeler. It can be automatic, it can be electric. By the way, to make the cleaning process faster, buy small potatoes and soak old ones for 20 minutes first. You can also peel carrots, beets and apples with it. Potato peelers are safe, but they also have disadvantages. So, they can cut off too much pulp along with the peel. Besides, they definitely won't clean out your eyes. Such units are more suitable for young potatoes. But there are other options.

Peel raw potatoes in a minute

This method is similar to peeling jacket potatoes. So, we clean the root vegetables from plant debris and dirt and keep them in water at room temperature for a third of an hour.

Cleaning with a drill

Crazy idea, but quite useful. The drill must be perfectly clean. It is better to take a new one, not used before. As a last resort, you can thoroughly clean and wipe the instrument.

Place all the tubers in a bucket. Fill it with cold water and wait five to six minutes. In the meantime, we are waiting, preparing the drill. We attach a brush (clean) to its rotating element. Other similar products are also available. Turn on the drill and lower the attachment into the bucket. We perform circular movements with it, getting to each potato. Once done, drain the water with the separated skin. The downside is that you always need a clean brush. In addition, there will be eyes and skin residues on the potatoes. So, you will have to clean it additionally.

Clean quickly using a potato peeler

Cut off the top and bottom of the top. We put the potato on the cut and begin to cut vertical strips of peel from the bottom up. This option is not suitable for potatoes with a knotty surface or with a large number of eyes.

Advice for the very lazy or why you don’t need to peel young potatoes

For some reason, it’s customary for us to clean and wash thoroughly

many vegetables from cucumbers to potatoes. This is understandable, because vegetables must be washed, especially when they have just been brought from the garden, because dirt is layered on them. Yes, and we have been taught since childhood that fruits, berries and vegetables must be washed thoroughly, because without this action we can expect problems with digestion. And this is actually true.

But for some reason there are no rules regarding peeling vegetables.

It is clear that when potatoes are old, their skins have already lost all their nutrients and, of course, need to be peeled and thrown away. Or take cucumbers that have bitter and hard peels that simply need to be thoroughly peeled.

But when the tubers are fresh and young,

full of vitamins so that we can develop healthy - this is a completely different matter. Here it’s worth thinking about and deciding for yourself whether it’s worth peeling young potatoes if their skin contains a lot of nutrients: vitamins B and C, phosphorus, potassium and iron. Moreover, young potatoes are able to quickly remove fluid from the body, which is very conducive to weight loss. Here it is worth thinking about whether it is really necessary to peel the skins of young potatoes?

How to peel boiled potatoes, step-by-step instructions

Don’t be surprised, you should prepare for the process in advance, so the result will be even more impressive.

Step 1

We select root vegetables of the same size so that they are cooked at the same time. Wash them thoroughly, cleaning them under water with a hard sponge if necessary. Our chef will tell you and show you in more detail about cooking potatoes.

Step 2

Using a sharp knife, make a shallow cut around each potato along its widest part, exactly in the middle. Without damaging the root crop, we cut through only the peel.

Step 3

Now we proceed as usual - put it in a pan of a suitable size and fill it with water so that it covers the tops of the vegetables. Bring to a boil under the lid, move it a little and cook the potatoes until tender, from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size.

We check its softness with a toothpick or skewer, making a puncture in only one place so as not to damage the tubers.

Step 4

This is where the fun begins! Prepare ice water in a deep container. Not cold or cool, but icy. If it is possible to add ice cubes, we do so. If you don’t have any at hand, and it happens in January, just let the tap water drain well. Fill the container.

Step 5

We drain the boiled potatoes and immediately begin to put them in the cold one by one. 5 seconds are enough - we can time it - to get the desired result.

We take out the first potato and immediately, along the cut line of the peel, remove it like a stocking, simply pulling it in different directions!

We also easily and quickly peel all other jacket potatoes. With the necessary skill, each next one will cool while cleaning the previous one.

Terms and storage time

When peeled tubers come into contact with air, they quickly become covered with a dark coating. This occurs as a result of contact of iron, magnesium and potassium contained in the fruits with oxygen. A chemical oxidation reaction begins, the vegetable quickly turns black and spoils.

To extend the shelf life of peeled vegetables for consumption, various methods are used.

Let's consider how long peeled fruits can be stored at different temperatures:

  • at room temperature, the tubers can be kept in cold water for 3–4 hours, after which they lose most of the nutrients, and the taste of the fruit deteriorates;
  • blanched or fresh tubers packed in a bag can be stored in the refrigerator until the next day;
  • peeled fruits, soaked in water and refrigerated, can be stored for about 24 hours;
  • in the freezer at temperatures down to –18°C, the fruits can remain fresh for several days;
  • In a freezer at a temperature of at least –30 °C, peeled vegetables can last for several days or even weeks.

Important! When deep freezing, it is recommended to place the washed, peeled potatoes on a flat surface without wrapping them in a bag or film.

Very fast cleaning method

Using special gloves:

Before peeling, rinse young potato tubers under running water to completely get rid of any remaining soil and rinse thoroughly in the places where the eyes are located. Wear special household gloves made of very coarse material on your hands, or special exfoliating gloves may also be suitable for this purpose.

With this method, the peel will separate almost immediately, and the water will immediately wash it off. Thus, at home you can quietly clean as many young tubers as possible.

Using a regular sponge:

If you don’t have special gloves, it doesn’t matter. They can be replaced with a regular sponge, which we use to wash dishes (use its hard side), as well as a brush or scraper for cleaning kitchen utensils. Even a regular brush for cleaning a carpet can work perfectly here.

To clean the tuber with a sponge

, you need to unfold it with the rough side. In this case, the peel will move away from the vegetable faster and the process will go much faster.

To make the cleaning effect more noticeable

, you should keep the potatoes under running water. This will wash away any remaining dirt from the peel and also help it peel off.

This manipulation can be done with any scraper

, which you have in your kitchen, because its rough surface can get rid of potato skins very quickly.

Soaking in water:

To do this, place the potatoes in any container that can be closed.

You can also use a very strong bag. Pour cold water over the potatoes and leave to stand for a while, making sure to cover the container with a lid.

If you are using a durable bag

, then just tie it tightly so that the water remains inside the bag.

Now you need to shake the bag or dishes

, in which the tubers are located, and drain all the water, estimating how many potatoes have been peeled. If necessary, you need to do this procedure several times until the water becomes clear. Potatoes should be kept in water for just a few minutes.

Using boiling water:

Prepare a bowl or pan, place potatoes in it and rub the potatoes against each other. This method also removes “flaps” of skin from the tubers. In order for the skin to come away from the potato on its own, you should first immerse it briefly in boiling water, and then immediately immerse it in ice water. In this case, all that remains is to rinse the tubers under running water.

Using metal mesh:

You can also remove the skin using a metal egg net. To do this, you just need to rinse the potatoes very thoroughly and the skins will come off on their own.

Extreme cleaning method using a drill at home:

Pour well-washed young potato tubers from the soil into a bucket or any other suitable container and fill it completely with water.

Now you need to put a new brush, cut lengthwise, on the drill in the form of an attachment and secure it well.

After this, lower the drill into our container with potatoes, turn it on and start making circular movements with the brush. Make sure that the drill itself is not immersed in water, otherwise you may get an electric shock. After this procedure, drain the water and the peeled young potatoes are completely ready.

Peeling small, walnut-sized potatoes using salt:

Place the washed young potatoes (they should not be wet) into any container with a lid. A plastic bucket is ideal.

After this, pour a few tablespoons of coarse salt into the bucket, close the container tightly and shake it thoroughly. Now we wash the potatoes and everything is ready.

The skin peels off the tubers due to scrubbing.

This method is considered best for young potatoes, which are the size of a walnut.

Cleaning with a knife:

It should be noted that this method is considered the longest method for peeling potatoes.

You need to choose the right knife for cleaning

, as a rule, this is a small, short tool that is convenient to hold in your hands and also to maneuver on the surface of the vegetable.

Cons of Cleaning

The first potatoes of the season are small and have a delicate taste. Tubers can be left in a thin shell for the following reasons:

  • When stripping, the mass of the resulting harvest suffers, while the most useful part of the tubers is located immediately under the skin.
  • The peel is practically not noticeable in dishes, since in young tubers it is thin. The exception is creamy soups and purees.
  • Organically pure potatoes or tubers grown in garden beds do not contain pesticides, so peeling the skin is not necessary.
  • Appetizing dishes: casseroles, gratin or salads, the taste of which is already familiar, you can try cooking with unpeeled potatoes as an experiment.
  • Root vegetables, after removing the skin, quickly oxidize due to their iron content and darken, so the color of the finished dish may suffer: it may become gray and unattractive.

Peeling boiled potatoes

Potatoes, boiled with their skins, differ in their taste and are used to prepare many dishes.

There are two ways to clean such tubers.

Method 1:

This is one of the most common peeling methods, in which you need to remove the potato from the water, place it on a board or plate, prick it with a fork and remove the skin with a knife.

This is a good way to peel very hot tubers while saving as much edible pulp as possible.

Method 2:

The following method will help you get rid of the skins on tubers in almost a couple of seconds:

Wash the potatoes well, then make circular cuts

, running the knife along the so-called equator. It is very important that the starting and ending points of the cuts coincide. After this, send the tubers to the stove to cook.

Before finishing the cooking process, prepare a pan with very cold water.

You can even throw some ice in it for a better effect. Now, using a slotted spoon, transfer the potatoes to a pan with ice and count to about ten.

Next, remove the tuber from the water and press it with both hands from different ends.

Thanks to this method, the peel peels off quite easily and quickly.

At the same time, the potatoes themselves will remain quite hot. This way, you can peel the potatoes in a minimum amount of time without burning your hands.

Important:

You need to learn how to peel young potatoes correctly.

If you approach this process ineptly, then your hands, and maybe even other parts of your body, will have the color of iodine. When cleaning young tubers, it is recommended to wear rubber gloves.

Following these simple rules, time-tested in practice

, any housewife can easily, safely and quickly peel any number of useful tubers. In order to get the result you want, simply choose the option that is suitable for you. And the variety of different recipes will allow you to add spice and also please your loved ones.
