How to wash bed linen without staining it

High-quality home textiles are beautiful, fit harmoniously into the interior of the apartment, but not only. It is soft, practical and safe. But there is a problem and it requires a solution. The fabric is dyed. What to do? We answer these and other questions in the article.
  • Why does bed linen shed?
  • Washing rules
  • The fabric is fading. How to fix the paint?
  • How to restore color to bed linen

First of all, let's define the problem. If the textiles stain the water during the first wash and the colors become less bright, there is nothing terrible or critical about it. The fact is that in production, before packaging, the fabric is treated with a special compound. Have you noticed that when selling KPB they are rough, as if starched, but after the first wash the fabric becomes much softer? It's simple: the factory processing layer, which also contained excess paint particles, was washed off. And textiles usually do not fade further. But sometimes this still happens.

How to restore the color of clothes after an unsuccessful wash?

You can return the black color to clothes using an aqueous solution of tobacco or vinegar. After washing, saturate the product with a mixture of 1 liter of water and 20 grams of tobacco solution, paying special attention to the seams. Or soak your dress, jacket or trousers in water with three tablespoons of ordinary household vinegar (for a maximum of 20 minutes).

Why does bed linen fade?

The feeling of comfort in the bedroom depends on the neatness and aesthetics of the bed decoration. Therefore, when purchasing a new set of bed textiles in a favorite color or decorated with a beautiful pattern, every housewife wants to maintain its impeccable external characteristics for as long as possible.

But often, buying bright underwear only brings disappointment instead of pleasant impressions - the fabric quickly loses color, leaves marks on the skin, and fades. Why is this happening? The list of main reasons:

Technical violations during the painting process

Fabric fibers acquire color in two ways - the thread is dyed immediately after production and the fiber is woven from it, or the dye is applied to the finished fabric.

Textiles obtained using the first method retain their color for a long time. The second option allows you to reproduce rich shades, but its effectiveness depends on the quality and level of moisture resistance of the pigments, the type of fabric and its susceptibility to dyeing.

Important requirements for the dyeing process are strict adherence to the technique of applying dyes, high quality fibers, and the correct selection of pigments for the type of fabric. If a manufacturer uses inferior dye mixtures and color fixing chemicals or uses them in the wrong quantities, the finished product will fade.

Synthetics in the fabric

Many types of synthetic fibers do not “grab” pigment molecules well or cannot be dyed at all.

Improper care

Color loss can be caused by choosing the wrong water temperature or washing mode. Also on this list is the improper use of household chemicals or their low quality.

The sets with three-dimensional drawings applied using 3D technology are considered the most “fading” ones. Sometimes bed linen sheds only during the first wash, when unabsorbed microparticles of pigment are washed off from the surface of the fibers.

How to prevent staining

It happens that you come across a sheet or duvet cover of exactly the same color that you have been looking for in vain for a long time. But at the same time, these things are far from the best quality. Instead of abandoning the purchase, here are a few tips to help you keep your kit bright:

  1. Before the first wash, it is recommended to rinse new laundry in warm acidified or salted water. This is especially recommended if the linen is blue or red.
  2. It is advisable to wash unreliable fabric at a temperature of 30-40°C.
  3. If the set is hung out to dry in the bathroom, then it is better to leave the doors to the room open. With increased humidity, shedding occurs more intensely.
  4. If the bedding is of high quality, it is not recommended to wash it together with artificial fabrics. In this case, the coarse fibers of non-natural fabrics cling to the thin fabric, and it becomes rough. Thus, it loses its original integrity and begins to shed.
  5. If possible, it is recommended to buy high-quality underwear from trusted brands. This is the case when the stingy pays twice. If you buy an inexpensive set, after a month you may have to spend money on a new one. To prevent this from happening, it is better to buy expensive underwear once. In terms of color quality, satin linen is famous - according to some reports, it can withstand up to 200 washes without losing the brightness of the colors.

    Only proper washing

How to wash clothes in a washing machine

It is easier to wash sleep sets, naturally, in the washing machine. After all, putting such voluminous items in order with one click of a button is easier than doing it manually.

To make the linen look like new after washing, turn the duvet cover and pillowcases inside out - this action will preserve the color as much as possible. Only items of one color should be loaded into the drum, otherwise they may fade. Sets made from natural materials should be washed separately from all other products.

The key to successful washing is choosing the right program. Each type of fabric requires individual selection of water temperature and spin intensity. Before throwing things into the machine, you need to study the labels sewn onto them, which indicate what kind of material it is and at what temperature it should be washed so as not to spoil it.

General temperature rules for certain types of fabric:

  • cotton and linen can be washed at 60-90 degrees; for silk and synthetics, you need to select a program with water heating of no more than 30 degrees;
  • colored cotton sets are washed at 40 degrees;
  • for flannel linen, the suitable water temperature is 40-60 degrees;
  • Satin and poplin are recommended to be washed in water heated to 40-60 degrees

Do not load the drum to capacity. The laundry should rotate freely in the drum. The weight of the laundry is determined in dry form. The weight of loaded items should be one and a half times less than what the washing machine can hold.

When washing bed linen, it is better to choose a “delicate wash”. This option involves a gentle mode: spinning will be carried out at low speeds (600-800 units). If you set up a more intensive wash, creases will form on the items, the laundry will lose its shape, and the dyes will quickly fade. Heavily soiled items should be pre-soaked by selecting the appropriate program (pre-wash mode). However, capricious natural fabrics (silk or bamboo) and synthetics cannot be soaked.

Tip: To make your bed linen last longer, change it every two weeks.

To wash bed linen, you can use both powder and liquid detergent. Although the latter is preferable, since liquid-based detergents are washed out faster. For colored fabrics, you should choose a special product marked Color. It is not recommended to wash children's bedding with regular powder. Only hypoallergenic products recommended for children's clothes are suitable for this type of washing.

How to restore color to bed linen

It is almost impossible to completely restore the original appearance of washed items. Even professional dry cleaning will not guarantee a complete return of brightness.

However, you can update your bed linen and other things even at home. Here are some tips on how to fix the dye if your fabric is fading.

  • Ammonia works well for pink products.
  • For blue and scarlet - vinegar.
  • Soda will return color to blue and scarlet things.
  • For black and dark brown flowers, strong saline solution, brewed black tea and tobacco are suitable.

The situation is more complicated with white. But do not rush to boil and use chlorine-containing substances. If your bed linen is shedding, try this method first: mix 125 coarse salt with a tablespoon of coarsely grated laundry soap shavings, add starch and lemon juice. Dissolve in 5 liters of warm water and leave things for several hours.

What to do if the dress fades a lot?

If plain colored clothes “shed”, wash them in slightly salted water (2-3 tablespoons of salt). Fading items should not be washed with products containing soda. Dip the item into a solution of hand wash powder and wring it out several times. Wash each item separately without twisting.

Ironing

In most cases, bedding sets do not need to be ironed, since ironed fabric absorbs moisture less well. But for small children or sick people this procedure is mandatory.

Natural fabric smoothes out easier and faster if it is still slightly damp. Therefore, it is recommended to remove the laundry from the line not completely dry. If the pillowcases and duvet covers are completely dry, during ironing they are sprayed with water or ironed with steam. Natural silk sets are ironed only from the inside out.

How can you fix paint on fabric?

Ways to strengthen the dye

Bed linen is fading and staining the body - what to do? The simplest and most effective solution to the problem is to fix the pigments in the fibers. There are several ways:

Soaking in a solution of table salt

Salt should be dissolved in warm water. Proportions – 1 tablespoon of salt per liter of water. Place bed linen in the resulting solution and leave to soak for 3-4 hours. Afterwards, the textiles can be washed by hand or in the delicate cycle of a washing machine using specialized detergents. Rinse thoroughly.

Natural organic matter helps eliminate stains and effectively fix pigment in fabric fibers. But this method is recommended only for plain items.

Soaking in a solution of table vinegar

Table vinegar 9% (important - not a concentrated essence) should be diluted in warm water. The optimal water temperature is 40°C. Proportions – 5 tablespoons of vinegar per 7 liters of water. The laundry is soaked in the resulting solution for half an hour, then washed by hand using household chemicals for washing colored items. Then the laundry should be rinsed thoroughly in warm water or use a special mode in the washing machine.

But sometimes even such manipulations turn out to be ineffective. Then a dry cleaner comes to the rescue, offering the service of strengthening the pigment with potent fixing compounds. Also, specialists can correct the situation with a faded set by restoring the color using specialized household chemicals.

In order not to encounter such unpleasant “surprises” in the future, you should purchase high-quality bedding from reliable, trusted manufacturers. Then the questions from the series “bed linen is shedding - what to do” will simply not be relevant.

Washing rules

Before using a new bedding set for the first time, all manufacturers recommend rinsing the textiles in warm water (up to 30°C). This will help wash off excess paint, impregnation, and industrial dust.

Before washing, you need to check whether the bed linen fabric is dyeable. To do this, simply run a damp cloth or hand over it. If traces of pigment remain, the product will require special care. And when the paint comes off intensely or in too much quantity, it is better to avoid using such a kit altogether - the chemicals can be strong allergens.

There are several simple rules for caring for colored sleep textiles:

  • wash separately from white items;
  • compliance with the care recommendations indicated on the product label;
  • compliance with the temperature regime (recommended not higher than 40°C for combined fabrics, not higher than 60°C for natural ones, up to 30°C for synthetics and silk);
  • use of specialized detergents and napkins for washing colored laundry.

Knowing how to wash bed linen without fading, you can prevent the problem of color loss, fading of the pattern, and fading of the fabric.

Drying

Immediately after the cycle is completed, sheets and duvet covers are removed from the washing machine drum and hung. Otherwise, an unpleasant odor appears on them. The products are not bent, but hung on a rope at full length, attached with clothespins.

Drying clothes

It is better to dry the bed on the balcony or outside, but so that it is not illuminated by direct sunlight.
