Useful tips
Cyclamens are widely known for their attractive heart-shaped flowers and distinct sweet aroma.
The difference between Cyclamen and other house flowers is that they can bloom in winter, giving their owners a great mood in the middle of a harsh and snowy winter.
The magnificent bloom of Cyclamen usually lasts a long time, about several weeks.
How much time to give cyclamen to rest
Beginners in floriculture often wonder how long cyclamen should remain dormant. The optimal time is until the end of August. If the dormancy period is too short, it will be difficult to get it to flower in winter.
The bulb, which has received enough time to rest, itself “signals” about awakening. Young leaves begin to form on it. As soon as they become noticeable, the pot with the plant should be moved to a well-lit, warm room, and watering should be made more abundant and frequent.
Where to put the green friend?
This flower is recommended to be placed in the bedroom on the right side of the head of the bed at a distance of one meter.
It is noteworthy that the flower has a healing effect at night when a person is sleeping. At this time, his body and soul are deeply cleansed. Frequent stress disrupts mental balance. It's time to have cyclamen in your home - the energy of the flower can improve the mental state of the owner in about 10 days. In order not to reduce the radius of action of the plant, it is better to water from below (through a saucer). It is said that after this the energy field of the flower can reach 10 meters in diameter. And while the owner is in this zone, evil forces cannot influence him.
If there are other plants in the room, it is recommended to place cyclamens at a distance of at least 2.5 meters from them.
How to care?
In order for the plant to bloom and please the eye, you need to know how to properly care for it. First of all, the flower must be protected from drafts . If you decide to place it on the windowsill, then it is advisable that the window there does not open. But surprisingly, it grows remarkably well in a cool room, where it is only 10-12 degrees.
Cyclamen needs light, but direct sunlight is harmful to it.
We talked in detail about the secrets of caring for cyclamen at home in this article.
Growing conditions
In order for cyclamen to bloom regularly, the plant is given a certain microclimate, similar to the natural one. Organizing a comfortable temperature regime is one of the more labor-intensive tasks when cultivating crops in an apartment. Flower growers do not have any difficulties in meeting the other requirements of cyclamen.
Temperature and lighting
Exotic needs an abundance of diffused light. But you can’t place the pot on the windowsill of a south-facing window, as the direct rays of the midday sun will leave burns on the tender shoots. Since cyclamen loves fresh air, the room where it grows is systematically ventilated. The plant does not tolerate heat well. A comfortable temperature for it ranges from 10-12 °C, and in winter it is better to lower it to 6 °C. In houses with central heating, this condition is not easy to fulfill.
Humidity
Cyclamen does not need frequent spraying. It tolerates the level of humidity that exists in apartments well. However, if the air is excessively dry, water procedures are rarely carried out. During the flowering period, large drops on the petals can harm the decorative appearance of the plant, causing the development of rot. At this time, use a stationary humidifier or create a foggy cloud over the flower using a fine spray.
Soil and pot
Loose soil is suitable for the plant, which allows air to pass well to the roots, as well as water. Cyclamen prefers a slightly alkaline pH reaction, although it grows well at neutral or slightly acidic levels, but the immunity is slightly weaker. Optimal soil composition: leaf soil, sand, turf, pine needles. The components are taken in the proportion 4: 1: 2: ½. The pot should not be too spacious: this leads to souring of the substrate. When choosing a container, the material is not important. But there should be drainage holes.
Care during flowering
When caring for blooming cyclamen, you need to ensure:
- Sufficient lighting . During this period, the alpine violet needs the maximum amount of light. South windows are the best place for a flowering plant. In northern rooms it is necessary to use phytolamps.
- Temperature . The optimal temperature during the active period is 15 degrees Celsius.
- Soil moisture .
To water cyclamens, use settled water at room temperature. Water is poured into a tray or strictly along the edge of the pot. Do not allow the top of the corm to get wet. This threatens the occurrence of root rot and the death of the plant. For good flowering in the active growth phase, the soil must be constantly kept moderately moist.
Does a flower need a rest period?
If you follow the rules of care, you can slightly prolong the flowering of alpine violets, but you will not be able to completely get rid of the dormant period.
After all, nn is necessary so that cyclamen can rest well and gain nutrients. Interesting fact! Young cyclamen may not go into hibernation at all and bloom all year round, but over time their regime returns to normal.
The dormant phase of the varieties is as follows:
- In Persian cyclamen, it begins in early spring and lasts until the end of September.
- For Europeans, from summer to late autumn.
Reproduction methods
All types of cyclamens reproduce by seeds. They can be bought or grown at home. Flowering cyclamens are pollinated with a brush and wait for the seed capsule to ripen. The European species can be propagated by dividing the tuber.
Tuber division
The cyclamen tuber is dried before division. When cutting into pieces, make sure that there is a root and a bud with leaves everywhere. There is no need to make many parts. The sections are treated with brilliant green or activated carbon, then allowed time to dry (2-3 days). The parts are planted in moist soil. For germination, place the pot in a bright place and provide regular watering. The survival rate is not 100%, some may rot.
Growing from seeds
Before planting in the ground, I soak the seeds for a day in a solution of water and Zircon (4 drops per 0.5 liters of water). To grow seedlings, light, loose soil is taken, consisting in equal parts of peat, leaf soil, vermiculite and sand. A container with holes in the bottom is taken under the soil. A layer of expanded clay 2-3 cm high is poured into it. Prepared soil (6-7 cm) is poured on top. The soil is generously moistened. The seeds are laid out on the surface two cm from each other and sprinkled with a small layer of soil. The container is covered with polyethylene to create constant temperature and humidity.
The container is placed in a dark, cool place. The wait for germination takes 1-3 months. During this period, the soil must be watered and ventilated. The first to appear on the surface is a pinkish-purple nodule. When two leaves grow, the seedlings are planted and placed in separate pots. After 1-2 weeks, they are fed with complex fertilizer (reducing the concentration by 2 times). You will have to wait more than a year for cyclamens to bloom. But plants grown at home will be hardier and healthier than purchased ones.
Transplanting flowers
Planned replanting of cyclamen at home occurs every 2-3 years. The time depends on the type of plant - European ones are replanted in the spring, and Persian ones in the fall. This is the period before the start of active growing season. The procedure is performed using the transshipment method. The plant is placed in a new pot with a lump of earth entwined with roots. Just add the required amount of soil into a larger container. Don't forget about the drainage layer.
When replanting purchased flowers, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the roots of old soil. An earthen mixture for bulbous plants (“Tulip”, “Florin”) is poured into a new pot. The soil should be slightly acidic. For a young cyclamen, a pot with a diameter of 7-8 cm is enough, for an older one (3-5 years old) - 14-15 cm.
When planting, the tuber of the European cyclamen is completely covered with soil, and the Persian one is only 2/3 covered. In a high-quality substrate, fertilizing will not be required for 1-2 months.
Diseases and cyclamen with photos and their treatment
With proper care, Cyclamen rarely gets sick and is subject to attacks by pests. Modern hybrids have strong immunity, but if watering rules are violated, they can develop gray mold, which affects the rhizome. Then you need to remove the plant from the ground, wash it, remove damaged roots, treat it with fungicides and plant the plant in a fresh substrate. After this, Cyclamen is watered extremely carefully.
Also, with insufficient watering and low humidity in the room, the flower can become infected with spider mites. You can get rid of it with garlic water or insecticides.
The following signs may indicate that the plant is not entirely comfortable:
- The leaves turn yellow - if this happens after the end of flowering, then the plant is simply preparing for a period of hibernation. Then there is no need to take any action, since the process of the dying off of the green part for Cyclamen is a completely normal development cycle. In the fall, with properly organized “rest,” the plant will recover and begin to grow again. If Cyclamen leaves begin to turn yellow during the growing season and flowering period, this may mean the temperature is too high. You should find a cool place for it before the flowers begin to fade.
- Lack of flowering - this behavior is often the result of too high a temperature, low humidity and poor watering. It is worth aligning the parameters and then the plant will begin to actively grow buds. Pet Cyclamen can gradually get used to room temperature, but it takes a lot of time for them to do this.
- Leaf fall – leaves turn yellow, wither and fall off at high indoor temperatures.
- The leaves curl - the flower stands next to the radiator, and the hot dry air burns its foliage. It may also be a symptom of nutrient deficiency or spider mite infestation. It is important to examine the plant and determine the cause, then it will be possible to solve the problem in a short time. The affected parts are simply cut off.
- Peduncles wither - excessive watering, waterlogging of the substrate, rotting roots. In this case, the plant needs to be saved: removed from the ground, inspected, damaged parts removed and treated with a fungicide. After this, the rhizome can again be placed in the substrate, which is pre-spilled with a fungicide or calcined.
- Leaves and flower stalks wither - a sharp change in condition indicates that the cyclamen has frozen. It may suffer from drafts, so when ventilating it is removed away from open windows.
Tuber division
The tuber can be divided only when the plant has flowered. The tuber (see photo) is the most important and vulnerable part of the flower
Its division is an extreme procedure, so it should be carried out with particular caution
This method of reproduction consists of the following steps:
- It is necessary to water the plant just before the procedure. This will make it quick and easy to remove the root from the pot.
- On the day of transplantation, remove the tuber from the pot by digging a little. Next, wash it with warm water, removing any remaining soil. After this, dry the onion.
- Now you need to take a sharp knife and disinfect it. After this, cut the tuber into two parts, and you need to divide the onion so that on each part there remains one bud, as well as several roots.
- Sprinkle the cut tuber with charcoal. If you don’t have such a component at home, then take regular activated carbon, it can also be used. There are gardeners who even use brilliant green, as it disinfects well. This will prevent harmful organisms from entering the damage. After this, put the onion in a dark place and leave for 2-4 hours. During this time, the tuber will dry out, and in the meantime you can prepare the soil.
- Take a medium-sized container with holes in the bottom through which excess water will flow out, and place expanded clay inside as the first layer. The second layer should be laid out with soil, which you can buy ready-made at a flower shop. Typically, soil for cyclamen consists of peat, humus and leaf soil. If possible, you can prepare the substrate yourself.
- Next, place the tuber in the soil and water it. Now it is necessary to maintain humidity, otherwise reproduction will not be successful.
After planting, do not place the flower on the windowsill, as most often it receives direct sunlight. For a newly planted tuber, such light will be destructive. The temperature for reproduction to be successful should be 14-16 degrees.
To enhance and accelerate the growth of the tuber, you can spray it with special preparations for the growth of the root system. These could be: Grandis, Viva or other drugs.
As you can see, this method is not difficult, but it requires certain skills, so be prepared for the fact that it may not work out on the first try. In fact, the main thing is to choose a good tuber and provide it with moist soil after planting; the plant will do the rest itself.
Top dressing
Fertilizers for flowering plants with a complex of all necessary substances are suitable for cyclamen.
Fertilize according to the instructions on the package. During dormancy, you should not fertilize the alpine violet. You cannot increase the frequency of feeding, you can only reduce it. Important! Complex fertilizers already contain all the necessary elements, so they should not be combined with homemade recipes.
Choose fertilizers without nitrogen. It can lead to rotting of the tuber and a decrease in flowering intensity.
Description of the plant
The flower is one of the representatives of the Myrsinaceae family. Although some scientists classify it as a Primrose. Cyclamen is represented by corms with ovoid-shaped basal leaf plates. The color is dark green. Leaves develop on long petioles (about 30 cm). Their decorative effect is enhanced by the pattern of silver weaves. The inflorescences are also original. They are pointed and curved back, the edges of the petals are framed with fringe.
Beneficial features
In addition to decorative qualities, the culture also has medicinal qualities. The juice of cyclamen flower tubers has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. This makes it possible to use it for sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, sinusitis and other diseases of the nasopharynx. In alternative medicine, the juice, which contains alkaloids, has found use in the preparation of rubs. The latter help relieve pain from rheumatism and gout. Cyclamen-based products help fight cardiovascular disorders.
Species diversity
In the natural environment, cyclamen is represented by 20 species. However, only a few are common in culture. Popular:
- European cyclamen, also known as alpine violet, is a typical species with medium-sized leaves and blooms with fragrant pink-lilac inflorescences. Based on it, breeders have developed varieties with a white, carmine color. Of all the species, alpine violet is the most tolerant of indoor conditions.
- Persian has been a cultivated species since 1731. It is valued for the originality of its inflorescences, which, when in bloom, seem to turn inside out and grow with their petals facing downwards.
- Pontine is an evergreen flowering plant. Its peculiarity is the flowers on “bare” arrows rising high above the foliage.
- African - the species blooms very profusely. It has the largest tuber among other representatives - up to 14 cm in diameter.
Cyclamen flowering
The timing of the onset of the phase is influenced by the variety, as well as growing conditions. Flowering often occurs in the second half of autumn. If the required microclimate is created for the flower, flowering continues for 2-3 months. The color range of inflorescences is very wide. There are varieties with snow-white flowers, scarlet, burgundy and even purple, and all sorts of shades of pink.
Please note! Cyclomenia is a poisonous plant. If children live in the apartment, it is better to refuse it.
Reproduction
Cyclamens are propagated in several ways: seeds, tubers, leaves and rosettes.
Seeds
To get seeds at home, you need to transfer pollen from one flower to another using a soft brush. The procedure is repeated for several days. After this, the flower stalks will begin to bend, and a seed pod will begin to form in place of the flower. When the seed box is ripe and dry, it is collected, the seeds are taken out and they are soaked for 24 hours in warm water with growth stimulants.
After this, you need to prepare a wide bowl, on the bottom of which a thick layer of small pebbles, perlite or broken bricks is poured. Then pour 6-7 cm of substrate. For sowing, a soil mixture for succulents or a soil mixture consisting of equal parts of leaf soil and peat, which is moistened with a sprayer, is suitable. The seeds are distributed over the surface of the soil and sprinkled with a layer of soil. The dishes are covered with film on top and placed in a bright, warm place, kept at a temperature of about +18-+20C. The greenhouse needs to be ventilated daily and the surface of the soil should be periodically moistened with a spray bottle. If everything is done correctly, then after 1.5 months the first shoots will begin to appear. The hotter the room, the longer the seeds will take to germinate. When sprouts begin to appear on the surface of the soil, the shelter is gradually removed, and the dishes with seedlings are moved to a cooler place and kept at a temperature of about +15-+17C. When the seedlings grow a couple of true leaves, they are transplanted into separate cups with a suitable soil mixture and the small tubers are lightly sprinkled with soil. This is necessary so that the rhizome develops well and does not suffer from external influences at such a tender age. 7-10 days after the first picking, fertilize with fertilizer for flowering crops in a dosage reduced by 50%. At the end of spring and beginning of summer, grown Cyclamen are transplanted into permanent pots and the upper part of the tuber is slightly exposed.
Tubers
Domestic Cyclamens can also be propagated by dividing adult tubers into 3-4 parts or separating daughter nodules. Tubers are separated only after flowering. Daughter shoots can be carefully separated from the mother rhizome and planted in separate cups. Adult tubers are taken out of the ground, dried and divided into several parts with a sharp, clean knife. In each plot, at least one growing point and part of the roots should remain, and the cut areas should be sprinkled with coal. After this, the tubers are planted in separate containers with a calcined, moist substrate and buried 2/3. Until the plots take root, watering should be minimal, otherwise the tubers will begin to rot.
Leaf
European Cyclamens can be propagated by leaves. Then the leaves must have their own roots; for this they are separated and germinated in a glass of water, after which they are planted in a pot with a substrate. This method is very complicated; most often the leaves do not take root, but simply rot at the base and dry at the top.
Rosette
Adult Cyclamens can be propagated by rosettes, which are broken off at the base and planted in the substrate. You cannot break off more than one rosette from a plant, otherwise the mother bush will die. The surface of the dish is covered with a transparent cap and placed in a warm place. After 2 weeks, the plants will take root and begin to grow. Persian Cyclamen are very difficult to reproduce by rosettes, so this method is most often used for European Cyclamen.
Varieties for home cultivation
There are several suitable varieties for home growing:
Persian is the most popular. It is larger than all other species. Flowering from December to May.
European or purple cyclamen - the care for which is slightly different, since it blooms in the fall. Does not shed leaves during winter dormancy.
Ivy-leaved. In warm countries it can grow in open ground, but for the middle zone it is not frost-resistant enough.
Kossky. It is found wild in Bulgaria, Turkey, and the Middle East.
African. It is characterized by the fact that the flower stalks appear before the leaves.
Within each species there are subspecies. For example, among the European variety there are varieties Green Ice, Silver, Album.
It has small pink flowers, up to 2 cm in diameter. The leaves grow from a tuber and have a silvery pattern.
The flowers are pink with lilac stripes. The leaves are glossy with streaks.
Miniature form with white peduncles and dark green leaves with silver streaks.
Lake Garda
A plant with lighter leaves and a dark outline. The flowers are pink.
European cyclamen is easier to care for, reproduces more easily and does not shed its leaves, which makes the flower attractive throughout the year.
Diseases and pests
Thrips are small insects that feed on the sap of leaves. A sign of infection is the appearance of white dots on the leaf blade. Parasites also harm the roots of the plant, burrowing into the soil at the larval stage. Insecticides will help remove thrips. In hot weather, spider mites can settle on cyclamen. Treatment with Fufanon or Aktara will be required.
One of the most common plant pests is the cyclamen mite. They appear when there is excess moisture. Under the influence of the pest, the leaves curl and dry out. Spraying with the drug "Aktara" helps to destroy the tick. Violations of agricultural practices lead to the appearance of gray rot on the petioles and leaves. Its main symptom is gray plaque. This is a fungal infection that is treated with fungicides. Replanting into new soil will be required.
With proper care, cyclamen delights with its beautiful leaves and flowers for up to 20 years.

Procedures after purchase
After acquiring cyclomenia:
- You need to carefully examine the plant again. If damaged leaves and flowers are identified, remove them.
- The plant is kept in quarantine for some time and treated for preventive purposes.
- All plants purchased in the store require careful care and replanting.
After purchasing a cyclomenia flower, you need to inspect the root system. Replace the substrate, since the transport soil in which the plant arrives at the store is filled with a large amount of fertilizer to maintain it in marketable condition. Often the substrate contains larvae of various pests. When replanting a plant into new soil, you should carefully remove the old one and wash the roots. Often the transplanted plant withers and dies. This occurs after intensive feeding of cyclamen with stimulants, and the plant becomes dependent on them. Therefore, experts give the following advice on care after purchasing and replanting a cyclomenia flower:
- fertilize more often, gradually reducing the dose of fertilizer;
- if rotten areas on a tuber are identified, they must be removed and the cut areas sprinkled with activated carbon;
- The entire tuber should not be buried in the ground; the upper part should stick out of the pot;
- pre-steam or calcinate the purchased soil.
